The great game is on! And by the great game, we mean the invention of modern fandom as we know it. (Although we also discuss The Great Game, which: nerds.) This week, Emily and V go further back in the fandom time machine than we've ever gone or likely ever will. The Victorian gaslamp fandom of Sherlock Holmes lost their main man this week in 1893, and in the first documented act of modern fandom, promptly lost its shit. We take a look at what it meant to be a Sherlock Holmes fan back then and what it still means today. Are you a Sherlockian? Which adaptation is your favorite?
Dr. Amy Matthewson's Cartooning China: Punch, Power, & Politics in the Victorian Era (Routledge, 2022) explores the series of cartoons of China and the Chinese that were published in the popular British satirical magazine Punch over a sixty-year period from 1841 to 1901. Filled with political metaphors and racial stereotypes, these illustrations served as a powerful tool in both reflecting and shaping notions and attitudes towards China at a tumultuous time in Sino-British history. A close reading of both the visual and textual satires in Punch reveals how a section of British society visualised and negotiated with China as well as Britain's position in the global community. By contextualising Punch's cartoons within the broader frameworks of British socio-cultural and political discourse, the Dr. Matthewson engages in a critical enquiry of popular culture and its engagements with race, geopolitical propaganda, and public consciousness. This book will interest scholars and researchers of cultural studies, political history and Empire, Chinese studies, popular culture, Victoriana, as well as media studies comics-based research. Dr. Amy Matthewson has a PhD degree in history from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), at the University of London, in the UK. Dr. Matthewson is a historian interested in representation through visual and material culture, in particular the ways in which China and Chinese communities were understood by Western nations in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with specific interest in Britain's relationship with China. London, 1870. Lucy Braithwhite lives a privileged existence as heir to the fortune of Braithwhite & Company - the most successful purveyor of English luxury wallpapers the world over. The company's formulas have been respected for nearly a century, but have always remained cloaked in mystery. No one has been able to explain the originality of design, or the brilliance of their colours, leaving many to wonder if the mysterious spell-like effect of their wallpapers is due simply to artistry, or something more sinister. When Mr Luckhurst, the company's manager, and the man who has acted as surrogate father to Lucy and her invalid brother John since they were children, suddenly dies, Lucy is shocked to discover that there is no succession plan in place. Who will ensure that the company and her family continue to thrive? The answer soon arrives in the form of the young and alluring Julian Rivers, who, unbeknownst to Lucy and John, has been essential to the company's operations for some time. At first, he seems like the answer to their prayers, but as Lucy begins piecing together Julian's true intentions, and John begins seeing spectral visions in the house's wallpaper, it becomes clear to Lucy that she must do everything within her power to oppose the diabolic forces that have risen up to destroy her family. Set against the backdrop of the real-life arsenic wallpaper controversy of the late 19th century, The Company is a dark and haunting slice of gothic Victoriana, following one woman's fight to preserve all that she holds dear.

Recipe for a riotous sixties romp? Take two aging thespians, mix in a dozen dependable character actors, add three or four comic geniuses to bind it all together and season with a generous pinch of psychedelic Victoriana. Top it off with a rising young star and the director's wife and the result is a complex confection full of surprises which the whole family can enjoy! Joining Tyler this week is writer, podcaster and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington to talk about a film which he (rightly) argues is unfairly underappreciated: Bryan Forbes' 1966 ensemble comedy The Wrong Box. It qualifies for this podcast owing to a film-stealing turn by Peter Sellers as Doctor Pratt, but he is only one of many delights - it also features Peter Cook & Dudley Moore as a pair of hissable villains, Wilfrid Lawson as a butler on the verge of collapse, Michael Caine as the dashing, if naive, romantic lead, Tony Hancock as a rheumy-eyed troubled 'tec and Ralph Richardson as an increasingly erratic epistemophilic uncle! Also in 'blink-and-you'll-miss-'em' terms, Valentine Dyall, John Junkin, Leonard Rossiter and Graham Stark! (Graham Stark appears by kind permission of Mr Sellers). And, of course, the Lovely Nanette Newman as Miss Julia Finsbury. It's a fun, rambling conversation which, like the film itself, takes a lot of surprising turns! Comedian, actor, writer and presenter Tom Allen is Kiri's guest. Tom chats to Kiri about growing up gay, getting into formalwear and Victoriana as a teen, and finding confidence as a self-declared outsider, with style icons such as Mr Banks, Fred Astaire, and his eccentric Aunty Gilly. Join Kiri and Tom as they reminisce on the limitations of 90s menswear, recoil at the horror of having the same shoes as your maths teacher, and rejoice the flamboyance of a beautiful tie or pocket square.Who Are You Wearing is a Little Wander production. If you loved our Halloween special with Hayden Peters from Art of Mourning, you cannot miss this episode. Kate Kierstead is Hayden's American counterpart. She's captain of the good ship Roses and Rue, an online shop specializing in mourning and sentiment, hair art, keepsakes, and all things Victoriana. Kate is a real wunderkind, and we're not just talking about 19th-century ephemera. Grab yourself a dictionary before you listen because, throughout the interview, Kate flexes her giant vocabulary muscles. While she fangirls over Oscar Wilde and David Bowie, the Mavens gorge on Kate's extensive knowledge of her shop's contents. A good portion of the interview is Sam and Kate forgetting about the podcast entirely and geeking out about The Dark Crystal and related movies. By the end of this one, you'll be asking yourself, "Is this a goth thing?"
