This episode challenges the broken narrative around the American Dream and reframes it as a mindset, not a marketing slogan. He dives into the importance of creation over consumption, the undervalued wisdom of older generations, and the truth that you're never too old (or too young) to build something of real value.Nick shares stories of his friend and aerospace legend Burt Rutan: the man who invented private space travel and is still designing planes at age 83. The episode also features a tribute to Max Faget, a high-impact inventor with no college degree who helped shape modern space capsules and inspired Rutan deep into his 90s.This episode is both a wake-up call and a love letter to dreamers, doers, and underdogs of all ages.

Terry Fulwider was born in Calamus, Iowa and grew up in Waco, Texas. Terry has two grown children with his wife Lynn, and they now care for two cats and two dogs. They married at the 8A1 Guntersville airport aviation museum in 2013. After developing his musical career in Nashville over 20 years, he now makes his home Albertville, Alabama since 2014 where he works supporting the IT infrastructure at a poultry processing company. Terry's Music career is grounded in his talent as a guitar player and his experiences playing the on the Honky-Tonk Highway in Nashville. Terry's also gone on tour with well known American country music singer and songwriter Joe Diffie with whom Terry recorded a live album at Billy Bob's in Dallas Texas. Terry also toured with country soul singer Billy Joe Royal whose song Down in the Boondocks became a hit in the 1960's. Terry now has his own band and operates a recording studio in his home. He continues his service through music as a worship leader for his church.Terry's hobbyist interest in mechanics took flight in his late teens though the restoration of his 1966 Chevelle with the help of his father and continues today with a project to refresh an earlier restoration of a custom 1968 Mercury Cougar. In 2008 Terry's aviation engagement reached a significant milestone when he earned his PPL at Smyrna/Rutherford County Airport (KMQY). Terry is beginning the ambitious effort of building a Rutan LongEZ and is using OpenEZ LongEZ Plans to build Serial Number 0001 of the Fulwider LongEZ.In preparation for this episode, Terry shared with me a story about a time when he was listening to podcasts on a long drive and discovered the CanardCast episodes. He recalled the rewarding feeling of getting a chance to hear the voices of the people he'd been reading about online and through his research in the process of reviewing the plans and preparing his LongEZ build. I found this exciting to hear as it reinforced one of the goals for the CanardCast project. Terry's interests and experiences all come together now: Media production and Sound Editing, mechanical vehicle restoration, Rutan canard builder, Pilot and IT Services support to perfectly cradle his new role at COBA. Let's get to know our new producer, Terry a little more in the first episode of Season 4 of CanardCast!

In his recent book, High-Bounty Men in the Army of the Potomac: Reclaiming Their Honor (The Kent State University Press, 2024), Edwin P. Rutan II rehabilitates the motivations and contributions of late-war Union soldiers and reframes our understanding of how the Union won the Civil War. For more than a century, historians have disparaged the men who joined the Union army in the later days of the Civil War –– when higher bounty payments and the conditional draft were in effect –– as unpatriotic mercenaries who made poor soldiers and contributed little to the Union victory. However, as Rutan explains, historians have relied on the accounts of 1861 and 1862 veterans who resented these new recruits who had not yet suffered the hardships of war, and they were jealous of the higher bounties those recruits received. The result, he argues, is a long-standing mischaracterization of the service of 750,000 Union soldiers. High-Bounty Men in the Army of the Potomac offers a much-needed correction to the historical record, providing a more balanced assessment of the “high-bounty” replacements in the Army of the Potomac. Rutan argues, using combat-effectiveness methodology, that they were generally competent soldiers and indispensable in defeating the Army of Northern Virginia. He also examines the issue of financial motivation, concluding that the volunteers of 1862 may have been more driven by economic incentives than once thought, and 1864 recruits were less driven by this than typically described. Thus, Rutan concludes that the Union “high-bounty” men do not deserve the scorn heaped on them by early volunteers and subsequent generations of historians. Andrew O. Back on May 2nd, I made an emergency flight to Coeur d' Alene, Idaho to say goodbye to my friend Dick Rutan, a highly decorated fighter pilot and the first man to fly around the world non-stop and un-refueled. With the occasional 15-minute catnap he flew for nine days straight. I spent an hour with him on the 3rd, just before he disconnected his own oxygen supply and flew west for the last time. He knew the route. This is my tribute to this amazing man. It took me almost all of June but I am very, very proud of it and I hope it will give you some idea of what an incredible man Dick Rutan was.

Elizabeth and Gabe Rutan-Ram had fostered numerous children before they decided to adopt one, a child from Florida identified with a disability. If they were a monied couple, they could have gone through a private adoption agency spending $30,000 or more. Instead, and more in keeping with their means, they opted to take their state's mandatory foster-parent training program and home-study certification through the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, a child-placement agency that receives taxpayer funding from the Tennessee Department of Children's Services.Just as they were about to begin their training, however, Liz had a nagging feeling that maybe, before they go too far down this road, they should let Holston know that she and Gabe are Jewish. Immediately they were told they were no longer eligible for Holston's services, as they do not share the same religious beliefs. In this episode of the Who's He? Podcast.... Horror of Fang Rock - Review This episode Phil and Scott settled down to watch the new and shiny version of Horror of Fang Rock from the recent Season 15 blu-ray collection. New effects, screaming ladies and plenty of fog is the order of the day with Tom Baker and Louise Jameson on fine form. They also go through the number of changes made to the special effects (spoilers ahoy!) and Phil takes Scott through a quick potted history of producer Graham Williams and touches upon how awkward Tom Baker was towards him. But what's this? The BBC also release a new trailer for the upcoming series of Doctor Who, along with all 8 episode titles. Of course, the lads talk about that as well. We kick off a brave new era as Graham Williams takes the reins of the show with the Season 15 opener, Horror of Fang Rock. This story features our only ever sighting of a Rutan – the mortal enemy of the Sontarans. It also features… rich people? Ugh. Ok, whatever, guys.   Join us as we discuss Leela's bloodlust, Terrance Dicks' love of the green, whether this story suffered from overspending at the end of the previous season, the absolutely terrible rich people that find their way into this story (and if they're really necessary), and the disappointing lack of a “Best of Fang Rock” story from Big Finish! This case is a property-rights challenge by a California landowner to nearly $24,000 in development fees levied by the county as a condition for receiving a permit to build a manufactured home. The court will determine whether a monetary exaction imposed by a local government as a condition for a building permit is exempt from the “essential nexus” and “rough proportionality” requirements established in Nollan v. Cal. Coastal Comm'n and Dolan v. City of Tigard, simply because the exaction is authorized by local legislation. Please join us as we break down and analyze how oral argument went before the Court. Following the war, he became a test pilot and ejected a second time when his aircraft suffered an engine failure. CANNIBAL CORPSE bassist Alex Webster joins us on this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast CANNIBAL CORPSE, the enduring titans of death metal, are set to release their sixteenth studio album, titled "Chaos Horrific," via Metal Blade Records on September 22. For over three decades, since their inception in 1988, CANNIBAL CORPSE has spearheaded the world of death metal, leaving an indelible mark on the genre and continuously pushing its boundaries. Their 2021 release, "Violence Unimagined," further heightened their already formidable reputation. Now, in 2023, celebrating their thirty-fifth anniversary, the band unleashes "Chaos Horrific" as the follow-up to this monumental album, heralding a new era in their illustrious career. This latest offering was crafted shortly after the culmination of the "Violence Unimagined" sessions, and listeners can detect the lingering echoes of its predecessor within the powerful soundscapes of "Chaos Horrific." Band guitarist Erik Rutan has an impressive track record of producing six albums for CANNIBAL CORPSE, dating back to 2006's "Kill." Additionally, this marks Rutan's second release as a full-fledged member, following his official inclusion in 2020. The album was meticulously recorded at Rutan's Mana Studio in Florida, the band's home state, providing a comfortable and productive environment for all involved. Every member was operating at their peak, fully prepared to pour their energy into the project. Notably, the guitar work on the album went exceptionally smoothly, thanks to Barrett and Rutan's custom guitars, specially designed with longer scale necks to maintain the precise intonation required for lower tunings. The album's title, "Chaos Horrific," was coined by drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz, a choice that resonated with the entire band as a fitting representation of their music. The lyrical themes explored in this release are as dark and intense as ever, including subjects like battling hordes of zombies in "Chaos Horrific," the grim selection of a random individual for dismemberment and sacrifice in "Summoned For Sacrifice," and the brutal retaliation of victims of human trafficking in "Vengeful Invasion." The album's artwork, crafted by the long-time collaborator Vince Locke, encapsulates the essence of CANNIBAL CORPSE, featuring a chaotic tableau of the living and the undead, mirroring the vivid imagery within the title track's lyrics. During the podcast, Alex discusses everything from the creation of the album to past band members to his personal writing process to his top 3 essential death metal albums.

Captain Charlie Plumb has lived what he believes to be the American Dream. As a farm kid from Kansas, he fantasized about airplanes, although he felt certain he would never have the opportunity to pilot one. It would be the United States Navy who afforded Plumb the opportunity to live out that dream. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Plumb completed Navy Flight Training and reported to Miramar Naval Air Station in San Diego where he flew the first adversarial flights in the development of what would be called The Navy Fighter Weapons School, currently known as “TOP GUN.” The next year, Plumb's squadron the Aardvarks launched on the Aircraft Carrier USS Kitty Hawk with Fighter Squadron 114 to fly the Navy's hottest airplane, the F-4 Phantom Jet. Code named “Plumber,” Charlie Plumb flew 74 successful combat missions over North Vietnam and made over 100 carrier landings. On his 75th mission, just five days before the end of his tour, Plumb was shot down over Hanoi, taken prisoner and spent the next 2,103 days in North Vietnamese Prisoner of War camps. His first prison cell was 8 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. During his nearly six years of captivity, Plumb distinguished himself as a pro in underground communications. He was a great inspiration to all the other POWs and served as chaplain for two years.Following his repatriation, Plumb continued his Navy flying career in Reserve Squadrons where he flew A-4 Sky Hawks, A-7 Corsairs and FA-18 Hornets. His last two commands as a Naval Reservist were on the Aircraft Carrier Corral Sea and at a Fighter Air Wing in California. He retired from the United States Navy with the rank of Captain after 31 years of service.Since his return home, Plumb has captivated more than 5,000 audiences in almost every industry around the world with stories that parallel his POW experience with the challenges of everyday life.To this day, Captain Plumb continues to fly left seat at every opportunity. The most treasured plane he owns and flies is a WWII PT-19 Open-Cockpit antique which is currently on loan to the Palm Springs, CA Air Museum. He also owns a Rutan-designed experimental single-engine Long-Eze. https://charlieplumb.com Follow the podcastOnemomentpleasepodcast.comIG:@onemomentpleasepodcastFB: OneMomentPlease

By the mid 1980s, all of the aviation records that had so challenged the imaginations of pilots and the public alike had been achieved… except for one. Lindbergh had crossed the Atlantic. Aircraft had flown to both poles. Even the vast Pacific had been conquered. American jet bombers had flown around the world, but only after multiple refueling events. The only thing left to do that had not been done was to fly around the world, non-stop, on a single tank of gas. Dick Rutan had been a fighter pilot over Vietnam. He and his friend Mike Melville, who would go on to become the first private citizen in space, had flown around the world in the starkly original, otherworldly aircraft designed by his younger brother, Burt Rutan. Together with a relatively inexperienced pilot named Jenna Yeager, Dick Rutan started to plan for this impossible flight, assuming that his legendary younger brother could design a plane that could do it. The result was a bizarre, insect-like creation named Voyager; a flying fuel tank with about as much interior space as a telephone booth. At 8:01 am Pacific on the morning of December 14th, 1986, Dick Rutan and Jenna Yeager sealed themselves into Voyager and took off from Edwards Air Force base in California's Mojave Desert and headed west. The plan was for each pilot to fly three hour legs, but it immediately became clear that Voyager was so fragile and unstable that Dick would do virtually all of the flying. The world had marveled at Charles Lindbergh for remaining awake for his 33 hour flight, but when Voyager, which had taken off into the west, arrived over Mojave coming in from the east, Dick Rutan had been flying for 216 hours pretty much non-stop. The last of the great aviation records had fallen due to the courage, endurance and persistence of Dick Rutan and the design genius of his brilliant younger brother, Burt.
