On deck: (6:48) This is the 500th Episode of the podcast! I'd be remiss if I didn't thank you, the listeners/followers/subscribers and fans for your unwavering support, as well as the sponsors and guests who have been a part of this journey. (11:39) Baseball's season is coming down to this. Especially in the wild card races in the NL & AL. My beloved Mets won an ENORMOUS, MUST WIN (in my eyes) last night vs. the Phillies as the stage is set to clinch a wild card berth in Atlanta for three games starting tomorrow. Can they slay the demons of seasons past vs. their archrival? How about the Detroit Tigers? They now have the final spot in the AL wild card at the moment, overtaking the Twins who've collapsed, although just a game behind the Tigers as of today. Who will come out on top when it's all said and done? I'll break all of the latest playoff possibilities heading into the last week of the season. I'll also get into Shohei Ohtani's accomplishment of being the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 stolen bases in the same year. Is this the best season by an MLB player ever? How about the historic game vs. Miami? Was that the best game played in the history of the sports? On the flip side, the Chicago White Sox have equaled the worst losing season of all time. Will they stand above the 1962 Mets sooner than later? And what happened to Nationals young star, CJ Abrams pulling an all night bender in Chicago? (36:50) Week 3 in the NFL had some surprises (Carolina's blowout win in Las Vegas. A 49ers collapse in LA. A no-show in Dallas by the Cowboys. Same for a Tampa Bay team where Denver ran roughshod over them.) but overall, there wasn't a lot of excitement or riveting action throughout The Shield on Thursday night/all day Sunday. Would I trade Bryce Young as rumors have come out about teams inquiring about his services? (55:30) The same could be said for college football Week 4. There were a couple of developments (i.e. Tennessee wins for coach Josh Heupel in Oklahoma. Michigan's QB throws for 32 yards in a WIN. Utah hangs on to win at Oklahoma State. Arch Manning's grade against UL-Monroe) but nothing much to write home about as we're a third of the way into the schedule. (1:00:32) Sixers center Joel Embiid signs a three year extension with championship expectations abound. Can he deliver considering his body hasn't held up over the past couple of years? The WNBA playoffs are here. It's been a hotly contested, compelling, entertaining and deserving of attention season, but unfortunately, I won't share my thoughts on this. Don't worry. It's not the league. It's yours truly. I'll explain. (1:07:24) A heavyweight fight took place in Wembley Stadium where Daniel DuBois disposed of Anthony Joshua in five rounds by KO. Is the heavyweight title fight a shell of its old self? Not many 90s rock bands called Arkansas home, and even fewer looked to the straightforward radio pop of 1970s and 80s as a launching point for their sound. Yet on Ho Hum's 1996 debut Local, the band from Bradley, Arkansas tuned the radio dial to sounds of Big Star, The Plimsouls, The Knack, Dramarama, and early Tom Petty, to name a few, for their catchy, unpretentious sound. Though released in the middle of alternative decade, there isn't a note of angst or grunge to be found, instead forging a sound closer to likes of Velvet Crush, Sloan, Superdrag and Matthew Sweet at their most straightforward. From uptempo gems like opener "Around the World" to the infectious "Don't Go Out with Your Friends Tonite," to soulful ballads "Disappear" and "Superhuman," both featuring horn sections, the band clearly has an ear for an earworm melody. If it's early July, you know it's warm weather, cookouts and celebrating another holiday as I flex my independence as a producer and host of your favorite little podcast with all of the latest in the world of sports. On deck: (3:03) As of this moment, there is no question that the best team in baseball from top to bottom are the Atlanta Braves. I'll explain in great detail as to why, even over organizations like the Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros. I'll get into some of the key series that played out over the weekend (Marlins-Braves, Red Sox-Blue Jays, & Astros-Rangers, to name a few.) and peek at the series over the course of the Independence Day holiday. (28:14) Free agency has begun in the both the NBA & NHL. First up, the Association. Not a lot of drama or intrigue with players changing addresses. In fact, quite a few players have stood pat with the teams they finished with last season (i.e. Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, Brook Lopez, Kyle Kuzma, Austin Reaves) among many others. The two big questions are where does James Harden end up as his departure from Philadelphia is forthcoming? And is there a destination for a one Damian Lillard (i.e. Miami, maybe?)considering his enormous contract and getting their worth for the perennial All-Star from Portland? (42:22) As for what's transpired off the ice, there has been plenty of wheeling and dealing in the NHL, but to me, nothing to write home about. I'll get into what has taken place as of this point. How much I love the few tough guys in the sport (i.e. Milan Lucic, Ryan Reaves & Pat Maroon) getting free agent deals or in Maroon's case a trade? Plus, the Islanders re-up on goaltenders Ilya Sorokin, Semyon Varlamov & Scott Mayfield. Did these signings make them a lot better? (47:53) Wimbledon has begun at the All England Club as the third major tennis tournament of the year has arrived. What will transpire on the women's side? Will Iga Swiatek continue her dominance? Will we have a better rematch between Carlos Alcarez-Novak Djokovic, but this time in a Final? (54:47) The NFL has cracked down on a few players violating the leagues gambling policy. I'll share my thoughts on that. Plus, NFL fans rejoice. Training camps open up throughout the sport in a little over three weeks as I can certainly wait for another NFL season to commence. Why are some ordinary houses getting an extraordinary number of offers? Crain's residential real estate reporter Dennis Rodkin and host Amy Guth discuss the latest local housing news. Plus: Marina City's retail space and the Hotel Chicago both hit the market; higher fares and bigger crowds await Americans vacationing abroad this summer; Walgreens settles claims with consumers over Theranos blood tests; and a big production studio campus is set to open on the Northwest Side early next year.
Offseason screw around time! We just chatter and chatter. The boys talk about the NBA & NHL playoffs, the NFL draft and then Bear rounds it out with just some random questions. The guys come up with a fabulous new invention and we're calling it "The TitBit", use your imagination if you want or listen for the explanation of that one. The ending gets pretty giggly with the questions, hope everyone enjoys!
Playoff fever in the NBA & NHL continues to rise as baseball, the NFL schedule and the Preakness will follow as another jam packed podcast has arrived. On deck: (3:04) We're down to a familiar final four in the NBA as the conference finals are set. Jayson Tatum & the Celtics were able to overcome a 3-2 series deficit as they defeated the Sixers to move on and play the Miami Heat for the third time in four years for an Eastern Conference Championship. The Nuggets and Lakers advance to the Western Conference Finals which sets the stage as these four teams were also the last ones standing the year of the bubble in 2020. I'll recap the recent events for these said teams, as well as, the aftermath for the Sixers (including another James Harden meltdown), Knicks, Suns (Coach Monty Williams got a raw deal as he was fired) and Warriors (the end of a dynasty? Was this really a dynasty?) I'll preview both series with predictions. I'll talk about Ja Morant's indefensible behavior as another video surfaces of him holding a gun on a social media feed which drew a team suspension. And the NBA Draft Lottery which'll take place tomorrow night to see who will have the #1 overall pick with potential generational player, Victor Wembanyama on the horizon. (44:19) As for the NHL, the conference finals won't have the same sex appeal that the NBA has. We're still awaiting the winner of an upstart Seattle Kraken team vs. Dallas Stars as they have a Game 7 to play tonight. Whomever comes out victorious there will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the West. In the East, you have division rivals squaring off, but it's Carolina vs. Florida. Not the sexiest matchup, to say the least. Will this generate any interest to the casual sports fan? (51:43) MLB had a very interesting weekend as you had comebacks (Yankees rally from 6-0 deficit to beat the Rays on Saturday) a near miss comeback (Aaron Judge missed a game tying HR by thismuch) a couple of surprising sweeps (Blue Jays over Braves, Cardinals over Red Sox) and benches emptying in Colorado between the Phillies-Rockies. (58:10) I share my displeasure on a few dates of the upcoming 2023 NFL schedule. THREE Monday night doubleheaders? You know I'll go off on this, the Thanksgiving & Christmas Day slates, opening night in KC and why the Packers are on primetime aplenty? (1:06:40) In a bit of a surprise, Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run in the Preakness this coming Saturday. Is it possible that this horse is primed for a Triple Crown run? It's international fight week and UFC 276 looks pretty stacked. Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway are gonna go out there and try to make their series one for the ages. Robbie Lawler's gonna be there. Cowboy Cerrone's gonna be there. Sean O'Malley. Uriah Hall. If you recognize any of these names it should be because they're some of the usual suspects the UFC generally calls when it wants to pull off a blockbuster pay per view. This main event pitting Israel Adesanya against Jared Cannonier, though? It doesn't feel overly critical to say hopes don't seem particularly high for that one, right?
