A Ghost Story for Christmas is a series of annual British short films first broadcast on BBC One from 1971 to 1978, and sporadically revived by the BBC since 2005. With one exception, the original films were directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark and shot on 16 mm color film. The series aimed to adapt classic ghost stories for television, echoing the tradition of telling supernatural tales at Christmas. So far, we've covered A Warning to the Curious and The Signalman in Episode 21, Whistle and I'll Come to You and Stigma in Episode 32, and The Stalls of Barchester along with The Treasure of Abbot Thomas in Episodes 41a and 41b.This year, we're bringing you Lost Hearts on New Year's Eve. But tonight, Christmas Eve—the traditional night for ghost stories—we'll be discussing The Ash Tree. Written for the screen by David Rudkin and based on M.R. James's short story, The Ash Tree was directed by Lawrence Gordon Clark. Looking back at Clark's credits, it's surprising we haven't mentioned that he also directed one of our favorite monkey-man TV drama events from the 1990s—Chimera. That's definitely something we should cover, assuming we can find a way to watch it. The Ash Tree aired on December 23, 1975, and featured Edward Petherbridge in the dual roles of Sir Richard and Sir Matthew. According to IMDb, Petherbridge began his career in 1961 and appeared in a wide range of film and TV roles. He's apparently best known as the sharp and snooty sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey in The Dorothy L. Sayers Mysteries. Impressively, he kept working until 2017, with one of his final roles being the voice of a gentleman fish in one of Tim Burton's Alice films. The cast also included Preston Lockwood as Dr. Croome, Barbara Ewing as Anne Mothersole, and, happily for our status as a secret Doctor Who podcast (though perhaps less happily for James), Lalla Ward as Lady Augusta. Barbara Ewing had an impressive career on the small screen, appearing in shows like Peak Practice, Casualty, The Bill, an episode of Hammer House of Horror, and even the Pertwee-fronted game show Whodunnit?. She also appeared in Chiller, a British horror/fantasy anthology series from 1995 that Ross has somehow never seen but seems to pop up constantly on people's CVs. are you two aware of this and should we be covering it?) Beyond acting, Ewing is also an accomplished novelist, with nine books to her name. Her novel A Dangerous Vine even made the long list for the Orange Prize. Lalla Ward had a fascinating career trajectory. Her first film after leaving the Central School of Speech and Drama was Hammer's Vampire Circus. She was close friends with Douglas Adams, who famously took her as his date to a screening of The Empire Strikes Back in the early 1980s. Adams also introduced her to her second husband, Richard Dawkins (for whom she would later provide illustrations for his controversial books), at his 40th birthday party—they were the only two who showed up on time! Of course, her first husband was Tom Baker, with whom she starred in Doctor Who as the second incarnation of the Time Lady Romana from 1979 to 1981. There really should be a General Witchfinders drinking game where you take a sip every time we mention someone in this next bit: In 2019, a modern-day audio adaptation of The Ash Tree was released by Bafflegab Productions. Written by Matthew Holness, it starred Amanda Abbington, Reece Shearsmith, and John Sessions. Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/general-witchfinders. [Spoiler alert! This series is almost 50 years old but we will be revealing - around 90 minutes - in who spectacularly dies in the literal cliffhanger to episode 7. You have been warned!] Hey sis, it's Christmas, but this month Andy and Martin are visiting sunny Elounda on Crete for Michael J. Bird's classic revenge drama Who Pays the Ferryman? Featuring Jack Hedley, Betty Arvaniti, Neil McCarty and Patience Collier the series gripped the British public in 1977 and after its BBC2 transmission was immediately repeated on BBC1. The following year it became an even huger hit in the Netherlands. The series also features prominent guest star roles for Lalla Ward, Gareth Thomas and Sally Knyvette, just before the roles that would make all three sci-fi icons. As they review this 8-part series the pair consider the birth of the package holiday, influence on Howards Way, and the inherent dangers of tiny tartan swim shorts. There are also lots of behind-the-scenes facts, many of which are admittedly lifted from the research of Dave Rice - do visit his website and buy his book. Patience Collier's biography by Vanessa Morton is also worthy of your attention. Oh you daughters of Themis! Next Time: 'X' (and yes we're going to be cheating)

Destiny of the Daleks is the first serial of the 17th season of the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts on BBC1 from 1 September to 22 September 1979. The story introduces Lalla Ward as the newly regenerated Romana. It is set on the planet Skaro centuries after events of the 1975 serial Genesis of the Daleks. The Daleks arrive on Skaro to find their creator Davros (David Gooderson) in suspended animation. They seek his guidance to help them beat the Movellan race with whom the Daleks are in a stalemated war.

Andy & Martin almost meet their match in the 1975 series Quiller. But once they get past the first 10 dreadful minutes of its opening episode they find much to enjoy in this Bond-on-a-budget BBC spy series starring Michael Jayston in the title role. However, it would be lazy to say Quiller simply knocks off Bond, because Elleston Trevor's Quiller is quite different to 007. He doesn't like guns or gadgets and doesn't let women distract him from the job in hand. It's not a cheap series either. As well as some inevitable stock footage there's heaps of exotic location filming in Germany, Malta and beyond. Jayston plays Quiller with a cool and appealing detachment. He is joined by Angus Kinloch (Moray Watson) as the Controller of the mysterious Bureau, and Rosalind (Sinead Cusack) who has more agency than most women on TV in 1975. At one point she even threatens to pinch Quiller's bottom! The series boasts many familiar writers and directors of the time such as Brian Clemens, Peter Graham Scott, Anthony Read, and Viktors Ritelis. Guest stars are aplenty: Patrica Hodge, Shane Rimmer, Celia Gregory, Ed Bishop, and Lalla Ward to name just a few. Andy & Martin select 5 of the 13 episodes to review in depth and find much to enjoy in this largely forgotten series that they believe deserves to be much better known. Next Time: Rockliffe's Babies

In a far-off galaxy in a distant future, a band of misfit soldiers in a comical castle await the arrival of an enemy long thought dead — thousands upon thousands of killer Cybermen. Angie and Archie don't seem particularly impressed, though, and neither do Nathan, Richard, James and Peter. It's Nightmare in Silver. Notes and links Richard is reminded of the Hammer film Vampire Circus (1972), which features Lalla Ward, Adrienne Corri and Laurence Payne, which means that we can now regard The Leisure Hive as its canonical sequel. He also mentions the 1988 film Waxwork, which features genre stalwarts David Warner and John Rhys-Davies. Neil Gaiman handles childhood fears so beautifully in The Graveyard Book (2008) that Nathan and Richard recommend that you go and read it at once. It's the story of Nobody Owens, who lives in a graveyard and is raised by ghosts after his family is murdered. Beautiful, funny and haunting. And some film trivia that you can use to surprise and delight your remaining friends: as Richard says, Mel Brooks was one of the producers (uncredited) of Star Trek's David Cronenberg's 1986 film, The Fly. Tread Perilously's Doctor Who month continues with the Fourth Doctor adventure known as "Nightmare of Eden." The randomiser forces the TARDIS to land on a starliner already in the midst of trouble. It's collided with a small freighter, leaving the two ships in a trans-dimensional tangle. The Doctor quickly volunteers to separate the ships, but his efforts keep getting thwarted by other problems like a squirrely zoologist who is using a dimension compression device for his research, a smuggler trading in the most addictive and deadly drug in the cosmos, and a pair of bumbling excise officers who would love to get promoted by pinning all of the problems on The Doctor. Erik's disappointment in Chris Chibnall gets yet another airing. Lalla Ward once again proves to be the MVP. Romana's extensive wardrobe leads to an interesting discussion about her lack of an iconic look. The old io9 episode rankings get referenced. Strange performances get celebrated, as does the two-person act of The Doctor and Romana. Erik tries to find all the Douglas Adams additions to the story (as he was script editor at the time) while still trying to give writer Bob Baker his due. The Child Compressor returns and Tread Perilously discovers Waahl's Herring Candy.
Tony Whitt, Alyson Fitch-Safreed, and Dalton Hughes start a new season of the podcast by talking about how awesome Lalla Ward is, how much the post-Davros Daleks suck, and whether there's anything that screams 1979 more than Movellans do. Episode 91 City Of Death All change at the Target Files with new co host Lee joining Mike, as we discuss City Of Death. Ben and Mark talk a load of bull in their fruity Scottish accents as they reach The God Complex and pair it up with 1979's The Horns of Nimon. Expect Brexit metaphors, an impassioned defence of a much maligned classic, an embarrassing defeat in Degsey's Where Did it Come Game, the differing approaches to the comedy of Douglas Adams and appreciation for an animatronic minotaur, Amara Khan, Rory Williams and Lalla Ward. Praise them. Also this week: Ben and Mark discuss The Ghost Monument, the new TARDIS, and ponder where the new merchandise for the kiddies has disappeared to.
This week Phil and Paul tackle Nekromanteia from Big Finish. And oh dear, what a mistake they made by selecting this one! With a story that has some very suspect portrayals of women that that basically concludes with 'don't trust a woman', neither Paul nor Phil hold back with their views on this very disappointing story that contains far too many characters and double crosses and annoying cackling witches! And in the news this week, we say goodbye to Alan Bennion, filming has wrapped on series 11 of Doctor Who, news that a Doctor Who Children in Need special is being filmed, Big Finish are reuniting Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, John Leeson and Matthew Waterhouse in a new series of 4th Doctor adventures and the DWAS are funding a blue heritage plaque for William Hartnell.
Before we start our next Year of Women mini-arc, we thought we'd cap off our Competent Women arc by sharing an interview with Lalla Ward. "Shada" Animated Restoration ReviewThere's new "Doctor Who" to talk about! Well ... sorta. The recently released "Shada," the abandoned 1979 Douglas Adams'-penned Fourth Doctor story, has hit the UK. Original footage of the Doctor (Tom Baker), Romana II (Lalla Ward), K-9, and others combined with recent animation (and original cast voices) has brought this "lost story" back to life. Jessica and Phillip review this restored classic Who story which includes "punting on the Cam," killer memory spheres, more Time Lords than you can count, TARDISes within TARDISes, and more. They see how well the "restored" story stands up and how well the live vs. animated footage mix together. In their look into the TARDIS library, the couple discuses another couple -- the only time the Doctor has married his companion! That's right, they examine the 1980 marrage of Tom Baker and Lalla Ward. What did you think of the restored "Shada"? Do you think there are other "lost" Doctor Who stories that should be animated?
Nick and Benji with all the latest Big Finish news, listeners' emails and the Randomoid Selectortron... Guest star: Lalla Ward . Drama tease: Kingdom of Lies .
To do the long reign of the Fourth Doctor justice, we're sticking with Tom Baker again this month, jumping ahead to 1979, his penultimate season, for one of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever mounted: “City of Death,” credited to the pseudonym ‘David Agnew,' but which was mainly written by then-script editor and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy writer Douglas Adams. One of the great humorists of all time, Adams' voice is apparent throughout this wonderful, zany, insanely compelling story, which features Lalla Ward as companion Romana, famed actor Julian Glover as the lead antagonist, a terrific guest performance from Tom Chadbon as memorable one-off companion Duggan, and even an amazing cameo from John Cleese and Eleanor Bron. And much of it is shot on location in Paris, one of the few times Doctor Who has ever left England. If you've never seen a classic Doctor Who story, “City of Death” will make you a true believer – this is just about as good as TV gets. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel! Toby Hadoke - comedian, actor and TV expert - enters the fifth year of his epic undertaking to talk to someone involved with each and every TV Doctor Who story... Here's the latest resulting free download and podcast:
"Who ordered the soup?" Bridget joins Daniel, Colin, and Steven as they run through the streets and galleries of Paris in 1979, actually (more of a table wine, shall we say?) for CITY OF DEATH! Doctor Who's largest ever watching audience of 16 million people tuned in to watch this at the time, and none of them were wrong to do so. Written by DOUGLAS ADAMS, at a time just before he became famous for his HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY series, this story is widely seen as one the greatest Classic Who stories of all time, consistently rating in the Top 10. Filled with moments of comedic genius, a frisson of fun, and a lot of love in a blend of crime caper and sci-fi genres, this is also the story that saw TOM BAKER and LALLA WARD fall in love and eventually get married (but, sadly, not for long). Cité de l'amour/la mort, indeed! Special thanks to ANDY WALKER for his kind permission for the use of his painting for CITY OF DEATH, the Doctor Who Target novelisation that never was, and that was eventually novelised by JEREMY GOSS. © all original music copyright New To Who 2016 and 2017

Yes, dear listener, we finally did it. After literally months of planning and promises, as well as a few hints, we've produced a kommentary (with a k) for the Graham Williams-era classic/rightly maligned nonsense The Horns of Nimon, starring Tom Baker and Lalla Ward as the Doctor and Romana, with Graham Crowden as Soldeed. James McLean, Brian A Terranova and guest podKaster Gareth Kavanagh gathered on Sunday to produce a fan commentary for the first two parts of the serial (well, all of it, but Audioboom upload restrictions mean we divide the kommentary into two parts) and it really does turn out to be a fascinating discussion. And although he couldn't make the recording, Christian Cawley is nevertheless present, introducing proceedings...
In episode 33, we begin briefly with the Steven Moffat Doctor Who News, with the news of Matthew Waterhouse reprising his role in the Doctor Who Short Trips later in 2016 and 2017. Then the podcast begins with your discussion of the Doctor Who releases, starting with Main Range release #208 Waters of Amsterdam by Jonathan Morris. In this release, we discuss the time period where this episode fits, regarding the Classic Doctor Who universe with the Big Finish audios. Then discuss how Tegan's character is drawn out more than most of the previous audios. Next, we look at the Fourth Doctor Adventures #5.01 Waves of Destruction by Justin Richards. In this adventure, Big Finish reunites Tom Baker and Lalla Ward in the TARDIS, something we have only had in three of Big Finishes Novel Adaptations. Then we look at the Early Adventures, #2.04 The Isos Network by Nicholas Briggs, a great episode that slips perfectly between Invasion and The Krotons. We then review the non-Doctor Who releases. First the ITV audio adaptations of The Prisoner written and directed by Nicholas Briggs, featuring Mark Elstob as Number Six. Nicholas Briggs wrote three adaptions of the classic series, with one amazing original story, Your Beautiful Village. Finally, we finish the podcast with a review of The Avengers - Lost Episodes Volume 5, featuring Anthony Howell (Dr Keel), Julian Wadham (John Steed). Because of storage space, part 2 of the 2015 Review podcast will not be released until February, as well as our Audio Only podcasts, where we review Spearhead From Space and The Web Planet, so please stay tuned for those. In this episode, Daniel and Shana finish up the E-Space Trilogy with a discussion of Warrior's Gate. And of course a story with the enslavement of an alien race has no particular political significance, right? Also: a discussion of non-determinism and Eastern philosophies, and a bit about the BDSM implications of Romana's torture scene. Main Topic: Warrior's Gate. Anthropomorphic lions. Correction. Nothing political. Understanding E-space. Shana likes Daniel's notes. Revisiting Tom Baker. Great Romana moments. Shana doesn't like Lalla Ward. Tamm's eyebrows. How Romana leaves. Fucking the Tharil or Andred. Moving on to Adric. The representation of the teenager. K-9 the slave. "You have to talk louder than that." Daniel mentions Jurassic Bark. TV Logic. Farnham's Freehold. In this episode, Shana and Daniel are joined by James Murphy of the Pex Lives podcast to discuss the introduction of Adric (and, for this show, 80s Who) in Full Circle. Since James is a bit of a Moffat defender, they also put him on the spot and force him to defend the horrible sexism, racism, and general horribleness of the last few years of Doctor Who. (He survives, barely). It's an overall very fun and discursive conversation that barely even mentions oligarchy at all. Main Topic: Full Circle. Introducing guest host James from the Pex Lives podcast. James likes Steven Moffat, with massive reservations. Racism? What are we missing in the Matt Smith era? Agreeable James. Perspective shift. Writing for Tumblr. Looking forward to Series 9. Capaldi as the final author of the scripts. How do we keep watching a show we don't like? Moffat's next project. Moving on into Full Circle. Adric has a little brother complex. Adric is petulant and worried. Adric and Zoe. Behind the scenes with Lalla Ward. The focus on Tom Baker. Haggard Baker. 80s aesthetics and JN-T. A band of Viet Cong substitutes. Marshmen is fun to say. Marshmen costumes. Unquestioned belief in evolution. Full Circle as straight science fiction. Science as counterculture. Self-centered religion. After the end. James is not a sophisticated political thinker. Systemic political oppression. Solid entertainment. June Hudson and Tom Baker's new costume. A bathrobed musketeer. Daniel interrupts James. Adric the elite who can't steal riverfruit. James will have a legal pad. Next week: The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar. Find Our Stuff! In this episode Daniel and Shana are finishing up the Key to Time with The Armageddon Factor. It's the end of Mary Tamm, the beginning of Lalla Ward, and K-9 gets taken over by an alien menace. Also there's some fairly obvious Cold War stuff going on, a supercomputer that can't be stopped, and some discussion of distant godlike beings. Main Topic: The Armageddon Factor. Finishing up the Key to Time. The Bristol Boys. The very last six-parter. Not The Odyssey. (Not) ranking the episodes. Baker/Martin and Holmes switching. Predictable plot. Astra the damsel. Black Guardian is the White Guardian. Good and evil. Fake Buddhism. Drax. Comic relief. Drax the plot device. Is the Marshall mind-controlled? Metatextuality. The Mentalis. It's April Fools' Day, so we thought we'd bring you something a bit lighter than usual. Join Deb, Erika, Lynne, and Tansy as we discuss the totally-canonical (according to some) PR1ME computer ads Tom Baker and Lalla Ward did in the early 80s. Wait. I should be clearer--Tom and Lalla did these Australian commercials AS the Doctor and Romana. And they are a glorious thing to behold. If you haven't already seen them, do yourself a favor! The latest Big Finish podcast dropped in on recording yesterday to speak to Romana II - Doctor Who actress Lalla Ward
You're in for a treat this week as #DoctorWho scriptwriter Andrew Smith recalls 1980's Full Circle in a special interview recorded at The Lass O'Gowrie in March 2013. Also featuring Tylos actor Bernard Padden in his first convention appearance, the interview was recorded as part of a Writercon event at the now-defunct public house and cultural epicentre. Let this week's podKast stand as both testament and tribute to The Lass, and all who sailed in her. While you're at it, listen out for stories about production on Full Circle, including a never-before told story about Lalla Ward...
Last weekend, three bastions of Big Finish headed to the Chicago TARDIS convention. This is what happened when they took questions from the fans. Plus: a look ahead with Nick Briggs!
