London is deserted, a plague has stricken Great Britain, and the streets are filled with chaos and danger. Is it 1963's classic Doctor Who story 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth'? Probably not, but it is time to take a look at a movie that might have been improved with a Dalek or two with 2002's '28 Days Later'!
Straight Outta Gallifrey revisits Susan Foreman... I mean Susan Campbell 30 years after the Dalek Invasion of Earth. Susan is not passive at all in this post alien invasion/present xenophobic paranoia. She is doing what she can to unite the earth in the fight for peace and progression whereas her son Alex, is setting his political sights in a different direction. Will Alex end up learning the truth about his heritage, even though has sought so hard to strike down that very thing that might be what he actually is? Sorry, that previous sentence got away from me. Oh, and did we mention Paul McGann's doctor is in this one? Yeah! THEY'RE BACK! We'd waited years for a new Dalek story, and then two came along in the space of six months in the EDAs! Today, we put Legacy of the Daleks under the microscope, as editor Steve Cole tells us how he picked it up from his predecessor Nuala Buffini, and author John Peel (not that one) tells us about writing for the Eighth Doctor, Susan, David Campbell, the aftermath of the Dalek Invasion of Earth... and the Master! It's an interesting insight...

Intermediate Studies of Podcast Unoriginality (A Community Podcast)
Welcome to our first festive edition of the show. Companion Mike joins Rhys as they alter the very fabric of time and reality to turn Classic Doctor Who episodes into Christmas specials. There has always been something Christmassy about Who, with its wise-old protagonist flying around in a magical vehicle, to the costumes, monsters and toys that go with it. And despite The Daleks, Dalek Invasion of Earth, and Dalek Master Plan all airing around consecutive festive periods, it wasn't until 2005 when the 9th Doctor fought ghosts with Charles Dickens that the show even acknowledged Christmas. So, we've chosen 4 Classic Who episodes that we think could be adapted into Christmas editions.
Many fans of the series admire the various Doctor Who speeches. From the original Doctor bidding farewell to Susan in The Dalek Invasion of Earth to Jodie Whittaker's memorable statement of intent in The Woman Who Fell to Earth, speeches are a vital component of the main character. But it isn't only the Doctor Who throws memorable speeches out - his companions are prone to monologues, too. In this podcast, we recall some of the best Doctor Who speeches, some of our least favourite, and wonder just what we might hear the thirteenth Doctor say as she packs away her sonic screwdriver for the final time... This week, Dougray Scott, Jessica Raine and two scary skeleton creatures are all so unspeakably horny that all Nathan, Corey, Si and Pete can do is Hide. Notes and links Jessica Raine, who plays Emma in Hide will go on to play Doctor Who's first producer Verity Lambert in An Adventure in Space and Time, a drama about the origins of Doctor Who which is released a few months after this episode. But more about that later, perhaps. (Spoilers!) Sound Effects No. 13: Death & Horror was an album produced by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in 1977 and used continuously in TV and stage productions ever since. Mary Whitehouse complained vociferously about its release, because of course she did. Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) also features time-travelling astronauts with a ghostly influence on the past. It's hard to imagine that it makes that much more sense than Hide though, isn't it? I considered writing about the racist lyrics of Cole Porter's Let's Do It, but after a second's reflection, I've decided to just let you Google them for yourself. But really, don't. The Stone Tape (1972) was a made-for-TV movie written by Quatermass's Nigel Kneale and featuring Jane Asher and Doctor Who's very own Ian Cuthbertson. Like Hide, it features researchers spending the night in a house haunted by a spectral woman, but Neil Cross would like to make it very clear that for copyright purposes, it is in every way a legally distinct entity from Hide. El Sandifer is particularly scathing in her assessment of Nigel Kneale in her essay on (among other things) ITV's 1978 TV movie version of Quatermass. And finally, Whatever Happened to Susan Foreman? was an episode of a comedy radio programme called Whatever Happened To…?, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in June 1994 — featuring Jane Asher (again) as Susan Foreman. It was released as a special feature on the DVD of The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Actually, there is one more thing. The story from The Sarah Jane Adventures that we talk about in the tag is called Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?. It's amazing. Go and watch it immediately. The March 1977 Target release was the novelization of "The Dalek Invasion of Earth", by Terrance Dicks. This contains perhaps the greatest opening sentence of the entire Target run and shows what Terrance Dicks can do with one of Doctor Who's most iconic hours. Jason breaks down the text in the first half of the program and uncovers some surprising changes that Terrance made to the original story. Jason is then joined by John Peel, who's written several Dalek novels himself, and we have a wide-ranging conversation through the entirety of Doctor Who history, from "The Daleks" in late 1963, to "Eve of the Daleks" on New Year's Day 2022... and beyond. That starts at about 30:00. This is the last novelization of a Willian Hartnell episode to be published in the 1970s. It'll be a long wait for the next one, so get your fill now!

Let's Celebrate the complicated legacy of Susan Foreman, the Doctor's Granddaughter and First Companion!I'll discuss Susan's (perhaps unfair) reputation as "The Screamer," what makes Susan special as a companion, her unique relationship to the Doctor, Mentor/Mentee relationships generally between the Doctor and Companion, the problematic aspects of Susan's development and departure, the deliberate parallels between her departure and Rose Tyler's, and her overall legacy within the history of the show. One day, she shall come back. Yes, she shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties."Look, if they don't understand, they can't, they can't hurt us at all. I understand these people better than you. Their minds reject things they don't understand." (to the Doctor)"I love your school. I loved England in the twentieth century. The last five months have been the happiest of my life." (to Ian and Barbara)-An Unearthly Child "Oh, look, Grandfather. I understand the Sensorites. They're timid little people. Because their minds and mine can communicate sometimes, they trust me." "Grandfather and I don't come from Earth. It's been ages since we've seen our planet. It's quite like Earth. But at night, the sky is a burnt orange, and leaves on the trees are bright silver."The Sensorites"I never felt there was any time or place that I belonged to. I've never had any real identity.""One day you will. There will come a time when you're forced to stop travelling, and you'll arrive somewhere."-The Dalek Invasion of EarthNEXT TIME: Serial #11 The Rescue (Episodes: "The Powerful Enemy" & "Desperate Measures")Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Apocalyptic London. Daleks. Resistance Fighters. Robo-men. Companion-worthy side characters. Some of the most iconic shots of Classic Who....and an ending the changed the show forever. Welcome to commentary and analysis on Doctor Who's "The Dalek Invasion of Earth!"Arriving in a London seemingly devoid of people, Team TARDIS quickly realizes that the Daleks have invaded the planet and decimated the human race. Split apart from each other, the Doctor, Susan, Barbara, and Ian end up embroiled with the human resistance as they race to stop the Daleks before the implement their "final solution." SUSAN: I can't stay, David. I don't belong to this time.DAVID: But I love you, Susan, and I want you to marry me.SUSAN: You see, David. Grandfather's old now. He needs me. Oh, don't make me choose between you and him, please!DAVID: But you told me! You said that you'd never known the security of living in one place and one time. Look, you said it was something that you always longed for. Well, I'm giving you that, Susan. I'm giving you a place, a time, an identity.SUSAN: Oh David, I do love you! I do, I do, I do!____DOCTOR: Believe me, my dear, your future lies with David, and not with a silly old buffer like me. One day, I shall come back. Yes, I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine. Goodbye, Susan, goodbye, my dear.____There are A LOT of references to this serial in New Who and A LOT of firsts, so the commentary runs a little long on this one as we work through all the threads. I also briefly discuss the portrayal of the Daleks in this serial, the way in which humans react to stress/horrific situations, Terry Nation's desire to position the possibility of rebirth after horror, and, of course, Susan's departure. NEXT TIME: We are going to pause and do a special episode Celebrating Susan Foreman. Because we should! We'll move on the following week to Serial #11 The Rescue!Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast. Honey, I Shrunk Team TARDIS. What a weird start to Season #2....Commentary and analysis on Doctor Who's "Planet of Giants."After the doors to the TARDIS open during materialization, Team TARDIS is shrunk to roughly the size of an inch. They must traverse a typical English backyard and house to safely return to the TARDIS. Meanwhile, the regular-sized humans who own the house are experimenting with a deadly insecticide.....and MURDER!SUSAN: These things haven't been made bigger. We've been made smaller.BARBARA: Smaller?DOCTOR: We have been reduced roughly to the size of an inch.I discuss the ways in which this serial interacts with the early environmentalist movement--particularly the work of Rachel Carson in Silent Spring.NEXT TIME: Serial #10 The Dalek Invasion of Earth (Episodes: "World's End," "The Daleks," "The Day of Reckoning," "The End of Tomorrow," "The Waking Ally," "Flashpoint")Special thanks to Cathlyn "Happigal" Driscoll for providing the beautiful artwork for this podcast.
