While in Paris, the Doctor and Romana sense a time distortion. They observe the Countess Scarlioni using an alien device to scan the security systems housing Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa at the Louvre. The pair meet Inspector Duggan, who suspects the Countess to be involved in an ongoing art theft scheme with her husband, Count Scarlioni. Duggan joins the Doctor and Romana in investigating the Scarlioni mansion. There, they find equipment used by Dr. Kerensky to experiment in time, the source of the time distortions, as well as six exact copies of the Mona Lisa. The Doctor instructs Romana and Duggan to continue investigating while he returns to the TARDIS to visit Leonardo, a good friend of his. After the Doctor leaves, the Count returns after successfully stealing the Mona Lisa and captures Romana and Duggan. Learning that Romana is familiar with time, he kills Dr. Kerensky and forces Romana to continue the tests. In the past, the Doctor arrives at Leonardo's home but is captured by Captain Tancredi, who is Count Scarlioni. Tancredi reveals he is really Scaroth, a member of the Jagaroth race. They had arrived on Earth 400 million years ago, but due to an explosion in their craft, all of the others died and his own body was fragmented across time. Collectively, the fragments of Scaroth have manipulated humanity so that by the 20th century, they will have technology that will enable him to go back in time to stop the explosion. Tancredi is currently employing Leonardo to create copies of the Mona Lisa in order to finance Scarlioni's work. After Tancredi leaves, the Doctor knocks out his captor, marks the blank canvases with a felt-tip pen with the phrase, "This is a fake", and leaves a message to Leonardo to paint over his writing before returning to the present. The Doctor learns Scaroth threatens to destroy Paris if Romana does not continue the work. He tries to gain the Countess' help by showing the Count's true form, but he kills her. Romana completes the work and Scaroth uses it to travel to the past. The Doctor ushers Romana and Duggan into the TARDIS, fearing that the ship's explosion was the spark that started the development of life on Earth, and if Scaroth should prevent it, humanity would not exist. They arrive in time for Duggan to knock Scaroth out before he can reach the ship. Scaroth returns to present Earth, where he is discovered in his alien form by his bodyguard Hermann, and they get into a fight which damages the equipment and sets the mansion on fire. Hermann escapes, but Scaroth burns to death. By the time the Doctor, Romana, and Duggan arrive, the original Mona Lisa and 5 of the 6 copies have been burned in the fire, but the last copy remains safe. Duggan argues that they've lost an invaluable piece of art, but the Doctor assures him that the copy, still done by Leonardo's hand, will go unnoticed, and that art is worthless if its monetary value is all that matters. The Doctor and Romana say goodbye to Duggan at the Eiffel Tower.

1979 - The City of Death - The Doctor and Romana are enjoying Paris but strange temporal shifts created by an alien trying to stop his ship from blowing up in prehistoric times are causing some concern. This well written comedic episode was criticized for its large amount of humor at the time but seems to be more like a new Who story than a classic. We discuss. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 23rd 2023 A couple of years ago, back in our forty-eighth edition of VISION ON SOUND in September 2021, I welcomed ANDREW-MARK THOMPSON onto the show for the first time, and we spent a happy hour discussing his artistic life, creating his witty television-themed illustrations and graphic images, and about how his love of archive television inspired many of them. His creation of spoof adverts featuring characters from shows like SAPPHIRE AND STEEL being used to promote products that never actually existed had given ANDY exactly the kind of internet presence that draws attention to people, and, little did I know at the time, but even as we recorded that show he was on the very brink of being commissioned to produce a collection of his artwork in book form. Two years later, and here, in the summer of 2023, that rather beautiful book is in the process of being released at last into the world, courtesy of DAVID J HOWE and his TELOS PUBLISHING Company. The book is called THIS IS A FAKE – after the words infamously scribbled onto the back of several MONA LISAs in felt-tipped pen by TOM BAKER's DOCTOR WHO in the story CITY OF DEATH penned by DOUGLAS ADAMS in 1979 - and is a lovingly crafted volume of delightful and witty works of art which somehow manages to weave an alternative history of the DOCTOR WHO series that we sort-of know and love, and many of the television shows existing alongside it, as seen through the kind of promotional material that could only exist in some other, far stranger, parallel dimension. So the book takes us on a visual journey right back to DR WHO's post-war radio serial roots, which would inspire so much incredible familiarly unrecognizable merchandise, and even a celebratory Garden Fete held in deepest, darkest Sussex, that led to a specifically 1960s form of traffic chaos. Sadly, as this book is indeed a celebratory pastiche, none of the products pictured within has ever been produced or placed on sale, which is, in several cases, rather unfortunate, as there are many that many Archive TV fans would have snapped up in a heartsbeat. Obviously, with a brand-new glossy and shiny fresh great big book to promote, ANDREW-MARK THOMPSON has been busily doing the rounds promoting his Magisterpiece, so I was rather delighted that he – or at least someone who looks and sounds very much like him - has taken the time out of his now frantically busy schedule to join me once again to spend a rather delightful hour talking about how the book came into being, his processes, ideas, and inspirations, some of which I hope that you might actually not have heard before, and I hope you enjoy spending time in his company as much as I did. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

Paris is the city of love - but how does that work when you're unknowingly going out with a Jagaroth? This fan favourite story raises more questions than answers we think...
Michael, Shelby, and Colin are joined by Jeremy after his near-decade-long absence to delve into this brilliant story. Time and space are shredded and woven together into a tapestry of art theft, murder, science, and the whole of human history.
The Doctor and Romana go on their hols for a water and bouillabaisse blowout by the banks of the Seine. Naturally, things do not run smoothly as an ancient alien, a mad scientist and a pugilistic private dick muddy the waters and they're surrounded by fake, if enigmatic, smiles.

Tread Perilously keeps another promise as Justin finally gets a chance to watch the Doctor Who story called "City of Death." When the randomizer lands The Doctor and Romana in Paris, 1979, they soon experience a time slip. It leads them to the Louvre, where a plot to steal the Mona Lisa is more than just a plot to steal a priceless painting. Shortly thereafter, a detective named Duggan joins their band as they learn the truth behind the plot, the fabulous wealth of Count Scarlioni, and the origins of all life on Earth. Drew Siragusa of Fanbase Press joins Erik and Justin for a story he's wanted Justin to watch for many years. The old io9 Doctor Who story rankings re-emerge as "City of Death" rates quite high. Justin discovers on air that Douglas Adams mainly wrote the episode. He also reveals his favorite companions. Tom Baker's revised costume gets reviewed. So does Romana's costume. Drew tries to determine when The Doctor started dropping names of historical figures. Chandler's Law gets invoked. Julian Glover receives nothing but praise as Count Scarlioni. James Bond connections abound. Duggan proves to be a good companion for Romana and Erik mispronounces "Scarlioni" throughout.

Special Tisha Ba'av Episode The 1903 Kishinev Pogrom was a tragic massacre, with reverberations within the wider Jewish world remaining until this very day. Goaded on by anti-Semitic newspapers with cries of 'Death to the Jews', a blood libel was fabricated and a mob was unleashed on Easter Sunday, April 19, 1903. Leaving 49 killed, hundreds maimed and injured in its wake, Jewish property was destroyed and looted as well. Claims of complicity of the police and government were voiced in many quarters. But it was primarily the after effects of this pogrom which had a long term transformative effect on Jewish society in Russia and worldwide. The great immigration to the United States was already long underway, but it significantly intensified in the years following Kishinev and the subsequent 1905 revolution. American Jewry was galvanized to assist the victims, and this cemented the relationship US Jewry was to have with their brethren back in Eastern Europe. Within Russia, many of the Jewish youth became radicalized as a result of the massacre, joining clandestine revolutionary organizations with the goal of overthrowing the Czar. The most profound impact was felt within the nascent Zionist movement. Chaim Nachman Bialik was dispatched by the historian Shimon Dubnow to gather testimonies from survivors. Following his five week stay in Kishinev, Bialik penned 'Be'ir Hahareiga' - In the City of Death, a poem about the pogrom. Powerfully written, it also included strongly worded accusations in regards to the perceived passivity of the victims. The poem and its message was to have an immense impact, as it was published and translated and became immensely popular. Vladimir Jabotinsky's conclusion was to organize Jewish self defense, and Theodore Herzl's conclusion was the Uganda proposal at the Sixth Zionist Congress. The shadow of the Kishinev tragedy was to hover over the many subsequent, and ever greater tragedies of the bloody 20th century. With a bottle of wine, a chicken egg, a clenched fist, and a famous painting of a nonplussed Italian noblewoman, we head to Paris for what is undoubtedly our favorite classic era story. This is an unusual story that is quite short and not that easy to work out exactly why it is there and how it can be helpful to us. But underneath - this story is a picture of what Jesus was going to do many years later when confronted with the real ‘city of death'. Written and recorded by Andrew Devis

It causes them to get a bit hyper and run around the streets of Paris playing chicken with the traffic, which is ironic because they find themselves locked in a cellar surrounded by a rare breed of reversible chickens which appear to have painted several copies of the same famous painting. It's no good asking the Russian chicken breeder who lives in the cellar about it because he'll die of old age before he understands his own work but perhaps the Italian Countess upstairs can shed light on what happened. Unfortunately she's experiencing the after-effects of a bad italian. Fortunately, Leonardo DaVinci's notebook has the perfect remedy for their condition; simply mix the Duggan Punch with a rotten Spaghetti Bolognese to create a Primordial Soup and you're cured. Blimey, who said Paris was a relaxing place? Still, you have to smile. Or maybe you don't….can't quite decide.
To do the long reign of the Fourth Doctor justice, we're sticking with Tom Baker again this month, jumping ahead to 1979, his penultimate season, for one of the greatest Doctor Who stories ever mounted: “City of Death,” credited to the pseudonym ‘David Agnew,' but which was mainly written by then-script editor and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy writer Douglas Adams. One of the great humorists of all time, Adams' voice is apparent throughout this wonderful, zany, insanely compelling story, which features Lalla Ward as companion Romana, famed actor Julian Glover as the lead antagonist, a terrific guest performance from Tom Chadbon as memorable one-off companion Duggan, and even an amazing cameo from John Cleese and Eleanor Bron. And much of it is shot on location in Paris, one of the few times Doctor Who has ever left England. If you've never seen a classic Doctor Who story, “City of Death” will make you a true believer – this is just about as good as TV gets. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel! "Who ordered the soup?" Bridget joins Daniel, Colin, and Steven as they run through the streets and galleries of Paris in 1979, actually (more of a table wine, shall we say?) for CITY OF DEATH! Doctor Who's largest ever watching audience of 16 million people tuned in to watch this at the time, and none of them were wrong to do so. Written by DOUGLAS ADAMS, at a time just before he became famous for his HITCHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY series, this story is widely seen as one the greatest Classic Who stories of all time, consistently rating in the Top 10. Filled with moments of comedic genius, a frisson of fun, and a lot of love in a blend of crime caper and sci-fi genres, this is also the story that saw TOM BAKER and LALLA WARD fall in love and eventually get married (but, sadly, not for long). Cité de l'amour/la mort, indeed! Special thanks to ANDY WALKER for his kind permission for the use of his painting for CITY OF DEATH, the Doctor Who Target novelisation that never was, and that was eventually novelised by JEREMY GOSS. © all original music copyright New To Who 2016 and 2017

#doctorwho @gossjam #tindogpodcast @DWBBCBooks The Doctor takes Romana for a holiday in Paris – a city which, like a fine wine, has a bouquet all its own. Especially if you visit during one of the vintage years. But the TARDIS takes them to 1979, a table-wine year, a year whose vintage is soured by cracks – not in their wine glasses but in the very fabric of time itself. Soon the Time Lords are embroiled in an audacious alien scheme which encompasses home-made time machines, the theft of the Mona Lisa, the resurrection of the much-feared Jagaroth race, and the beginning (and quite possibly the end) of all life on Earth. Aided by British private detective Duggan, whose speciality is thumping people, the Doctor and Romana must thwart the machinations of the suave, mysterious Count Scarlioni – all twelve of him – if the human race has any chance of survival. But then, the Doctor's holidays tend to turn out a bit like this. Featuring the Fourth Doctor as played by Tom Baker, City of Death is a novel by James Goss based on the 1979 Doctor Whostory written by Douglas Adams under the pen-name David Agnew. City of Death is one of the best-loved serials in the show's 50-year history and was watched by over 16 million viewers when first broadcast.
This is almost as much fun as the serial being discussed. Writer "David Agnew" (pseudonym for David Fisher, Douglas Adams and Graham Williams) Director Michael Hayes Script editor Douglas Adams Producer Graham Williams
Ask any classic Whovian what stories they simply must watch, and “City of Death” will likely be one of the first answers given — often without a moment’s hesitation. This iconic Tom Baker story penned by the great Douglas Adams of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fame is a crowning achievement of not only the classic era, but of the program’s entire legacy in general. Combining whipcrack dialogue, a clever amalgam of science fiction, heist capers and comedy, and even a […]

Tonight we discuss the story City of Death. What is a Jagaroth? Will Michael ever remember that the woman in this story is referred to the Countess, and will we make it under 30 minutes of commentary?! These pressing questions are answered and ignored in our next episode of The Whovian Review!
