We bid Margaret Sullavan a sad farewell with her two final films, Cry 'Havoc' (1943), a very dark WWII propaganda film with an all-female main cast in which the Battle of Bataan meets Stage Door, and No Sad Songs for Me (1950), a peak-crazy woman's picture in the mode of The Shining Hour with a slyly progressive screenplay by Howard Koch. Sullavan manages to make having your man stolen from under your nose while dying and fighting fascists/propping up the empty shell-men of post-war America into a triumphant art form. Then: we give our Top 5 Sullavan performances. Inside Out is a not-for-profit registered charity that exists to challenge attitudes and change lives through the promotion, production and exhibition of film made by and about lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people of all ages, races and abilities. For more than two decades, Inside Out has brought Toronto's LGBT community together in celebration of the best queer film from Canada and around the world. In 1985, I saw my first “gay” film at TIFF (The Toronto International Film Festival), “No Sad Songs”, a Canada documentary film directed by Nik Sheehan. I had come out the year before, in the summer of 1984, not yet 18 years old, and months before AIDS got its name. The film was billed as the first documentary film about the HIV/AIDS crisis, the film explored the LGBT community's early response to the issue through the personal testimony of Jim Black, a man with AIDS who died several months after the film's release, and Catherine Hunt, the sister of another person with AIDS (source). This was the start of my interest in LGBTQ representation in film, and LGBT film festivals. In today's Living OUT episode, I speak with the Executive Director of Inside OUT, Andria Wilson. We discuss why the Inside Out LGBT film festival is relevant and still necessary, almost 35 years later in 2019. Inside Out is committed to helping queer creators use their difference to make a difference. Inside Out supports various community initiatives like New Visions, Pitch, Please!, the RE:Focus Fund, and in November 2018, Inside OUT launched an Online Resources Catalogue aimed at providing support for LGBTQ youth. Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival The Festival runs from May 23 to June 2nd. The Lilac Time special with Stephen Duffy in conversation The Lilac Time is a British alternative folk-rock band that was originally formed in Herefordshire, England by Stephen Duffy, his brother Nick Duffy and their friend Michael Weston in 1986. The band's name was taken from a line in the Nick Drake song "River Man". Since its formation, The Lilac Time has gone through various line-up changes, with the Duffy brothers as mainstays. The band's activity has intertwined with Stephen Duffy's solo and songwriting career. The Duffy brothers and Michael Weston had recorded music that would become the band's self-titled debut, which was first released on Swordfish Records in 1987. Michael Giri and Fraser Kent joined when the band went on tour. The group signed to Fontana, which reissued the band's first album in remixed form in 1988. The group went on to release the albums Paradise Circus in 1989, and & Love For All in 1990, the latter of which was produced by Andy Partridge and John Leckie. The Lilac Time was dropped by Fontana then briefly signed to Creation Records, where the band was subsequently managed by label head Alan McGee. The band's sole release on Creation was Astronauts, in 1990. The Duffy brothers' cousin, noted-session musician Cara Tivey, contributed organ and piano to the album. The band later regrouped with Claire Worrall and Melvin Duffy (no relation to the brothers) and recorded Looking For A Day In The Night with producer Stephen Street for spinART Records in 1999. They then released Lilac 6 on Cooking Vinyl in 2001, followed by Keep Going, which was released in 2003 under the name "Stephen Duffy and the Lilac Time" on Folk Modern. Runout Groove was released on 22 October 2007 on Bogus Frontage. The band played the 2007 Green Man Festival and the Queen Elizabeth Hall as a six-piece. The band's gig at the Green Man Festival serves as the backdrop to the film "Memory & Desire — 30 Years in the Wilderness With Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time." The documentary was filmed over six years by Douglas Arrowsmith, who included new and vintage Lilac footage. The film is accompanied by a Universal Records album of the same name, which compiles songs from Duffy's thirty years of music making. The Queen Elizabeth Hall concert is to be released as a live recording. No Sad Songs was released on Tapete Records in April 2015. A new Lilac Time album, Return to Us is planned for release in late 2017.
The second episode of the Various Artists Podcast is here. This week, it’s author meets author – Frank Morelli talks to Wayne Barton about his debut novel ‘No Sad Songs’ which came out in February 2018. Frank and Wayne talk about the writing process as well as writing something with a message – Frank’s novel...
In his new Young Adult (YA) novel, “No Sad Songs,” author Frank Morelli explores youth caregiving through the character Gabe LoScuda, an eighteen-year-old thrust into the role of caregiver for his grandfather when tragedy strikes the family. Gabe's grandfather is a World War II veteran who has Pick's disease, a form of dementia similar to Alzheimer's. On the show, Frank tells us how watching his parents care for his own grandfather influenced the novel and about the deep impression left on him as a teenager witnessing the effects of his grandfather's dementia. He talks about the humor, poetry and baseball woven into the novel, and about its big theme of repaying a debt. When he's not writing Frank teaches eighth graders in Greensboro, North Carolina; although his goal with “No Sad Songs” was to connect with students everywhere on the issue of caregiving, he was especially pleased when one of his students arrived in class not with Frank's book but with a book of Robert Frost poems. Charlie Lovett talks with former Summit School colleague Frank Morelli about his debut Young Adult novel No Sad Songs, a moving story about a high school senior who has to care for his ailing grandfather suffering from dementia. From family dynamics to care for the elderly to music to Philadelphia sports teams—our conversation was wide ranging and enjoyable, just like Frank's book.
