The Slamfest Podcast brings the premier rock concert pregaming experience from the parking lot to the podcasting airwaves.  Episode 320 - Another Slamfest gathering...this time in the "Sooner" state.  Not only did Brad see the 2nd show of this band's world tour, he saw one of only 10 U.S. shows by this band in 2016.  The Slamfest crew saw Iron Maiden at the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK on 2/26/16.  Brad welcomes Slamfest crew members, Andy, Craig and Mike back to the podcast to recap this show, the entire weekend and discuss Maiden.   For the Band on the Bill Spotlight, they participate in a Maiden song draft - live songs from the 80's off of Maiden Japan, Live After Death and Maiden England.  After a Slamfest Tip of the Week where they paid tribute to Jimmy Bain, David Bowie and Lemmy, they are faced with a "Which Side are you On?" UP THE IRONS!! For the 2nd time in Season 3 of First Concert Memories we go back to an Iron Maiden show that your hosts never witnessed themselves. Why do we need another after hearing Brian Slagel, CEO/Founder Metal Blade Records, tell his story of interviewing Steve Harris afterwards on ⁠FCM 32 ⁠you might ask? How about a story from the other side of the curtain with our man Steven Michael from the Growin' Up Rock Podcast from 1985 - A young stagehand and Iron Maiden fan knew his way around the backstages of concert halls having worked shows since he got out of high school. With his coveralls, his knowledge of the lingo, and the confidence that comes with experience, Steven Michael walked backstage and became a member of the crew. SM sounds likes the young man he was more than 40 years ago when he talks about looking out at the arena from the Powerslave stage will bring a smile to any metalhead's face. He also imparts the importance of not geeking out so when the guys from WASP were in his midst, he made sure not to stare or run and say hi - a dead giveaway for someone who's not supposed to be there. He played it cool, he followed instructions and before he knew it he was on stage helping assemble Nicko McBrain's drum kit under the Eddie sarcophagus at the back of the stage. So he worked for free but got to be backstage for one of his very favorite bands and then walked right down to the front of the barrier to meet up with his buddies to see Powerslave live. MTV wasn't there covering it, there was no social media - if you wanted to see it, you had to see it live (or maybe stills from magazines). Suddenly he's a fan again and we walk through the setlist which would spawn the Live After Death album and video (where the rest of us saw the show). What a night!! And Steven Michael has decades in the industry so we might be seeing him on First Concert Memories again down the road... Thanks to having the same lineup as the last album for the first time and a work ethic driven by Iron Maiden's eternal leader Steve Harris, the boys produced an album with the imagery and songs that would propel them to global superstardom. Derek Riggs artwork was at its finest for the Egyptian themed cover and would also be the backdrop of the incredible stage setup of one of the most epic tours ever. On almost 200 dates in 11 months covering 28 countries including going behind the Iron Curtain, the tour nearly broke every member of the band at some point. But it was their proggy epics like the title track and Rime Of The Ancient Mariner that solidified IM as a unique act in the heavy metal world. The Wolfe Brothers are an Australian country rock band from Hobart, Tasmania, formed of brothers Tom and Nick Wolfe and childhood friends Brodie Rainbird and Casey Kostiuk. September 29, 1986:   By this point in time, nearly 2 years had passed since the release of Powerslave and nearly a year had passed since Live After Death was released, commemorating the World Slavery Tour of 1984-1985 that cemented IRON MAIDEN as one of the most legendary bands in all of metal. Blake, Eric and Melissa discuss the 5th studio album from Metal legends Iron Maiden and their egyptian Eddie album POWERSLAVE. The dig deep into the tracks and talk a little Live After Death and all give their top 10 Maiden albums of all time.

IRON MAIDEN's 3rd release with Bruce Dickinson (and 5th release overall), POWERSLAVE, might very well have been the most progressive heavy metal album of 1984.  In fact, it is easily the most progressive metal album of the early Dickinson era, with ½ the songs from this album being included on their 1985 “World Slavery Tour” concert souvenir, Live After Death.   It's time to find “the emergency lane before the off ramp” and discover which “really weird question” might be “good for you!” and prompt you to stop yelling at “mumble rapping 10-year-olds” while playing Call of Duty. But in 1983, Maiden were still forging their way, trying to solidify their lineup and making their name through relentless touring. After the success of Number of the Beast, the band wanted to take things to the next level and with the addition of Nicko McBrain on drums they finally had their classic lineup set which is still intact today. Thanks to Nicko on the skins, the confidence and power of vocalist Bruce Dickinson, the sci-fi lyrics and extraordinary bass of leader Steve Harris and the frantic guitar licks of Dave Murray & Adrian Smith, Iron Maiden had the lineup that would set them on a course for global superstardom. Piece of Mind would be the first of 5 legendary albums from this lineup in the 1980s and the 5 of them would reunite in 2000 (along with 3rd guitarist Janick Gers) to reclaim their thrones as the ultimate heavy metal band. They're still going today and The Wolf & Action Jackson will be catching their Future Past Tour in Europe this summer.
