In this week's Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode our heroine reunites with Fritz Lang and Glenn Ford in Human Desire (1954), based on the Zola novel La bête humaine, which was more faithfully filmed by Renoir in 1938. We debate the relative merits of the two adaptations as well as the potential weakness that links them. Then we turn to the quirky little noir Naked Alibi (also 1954, co-starring Sterling Hayden), in which Gloria gets to be the hero against a thoroughly incoherent backdrop to which we apply some scattershot social analysis. En 2019, à la foire d'art contemporain Art Basel Miami, un objet pour le moins surprenant attire les foules : une banane, fixée au mur avec un simple morceau de ruban adhésif gris. L'œuvre, baptisée Comedian, est signée par l'artiste italien Maurizio Cattelan, déjà connu pour son humour grinçant et ses provocations. Son prix ? Entre 120 000 et 150 000 dollars l'exemplaire. Trois versions de cette banane ont été vendues en quelques jours. Mais comment un fruit périssable, scotché à la va-vite, peut-il être considéré comme de l'art – et surtout, valoir une telle somme ?La clé réside dans la nature même de l'art contemporain. Depuis Marcel Duchamp et son urinoir (Fontaine, 1917), l'art ne se limite plus à la virtuosité technique ou à la beauté esthétique. Il peut être une idée, une provocation, un geste qui bouscule nos certitudes. Cattelan s'inscrit dans cette lignée : en choisissant un objet banal, universel, il met en lumière l'absurdité et parfois l'excentricité du marché de l'art. Ce n'est pas la banane qui a de la valeur en soi, mais le concept qu'elle incarne et la signature de l'artiste.La banane devient ainsi un symbole. Elle parle de consommation, d'éphémère (puisqu'elle pourrit), mais aussi du rôle de l'artiste dans une société où tout peut devenir œuvre d'art si le contexte l'y autorise. Acheter Comedian, ce n'est pas acheter un fruit et du scotch, c'est acheter l'idée, accompagnée d'un certificat d'authenticité. Si la banane noircit, il suffit d'en remplacer une autre : ce qui compte, c'est le geste de la scotcher, selon les instructions de Cattelan.L'événement a aussi généré un énorme buzz médiatique. La banane a été prise en photo par des milliers de visiteurs, reprise dans la presse mondiale, et même… mangée par un performeur, David Datuna, qui a baptisé son acte “Hungry Artist”. Cet épisode n'a fait qu'accroître la notoriété et la valeur symbolique de l'œuvre.En somme, Comedian illustre parfaitement la logique de l'art contemporain : provoquer, questionner, jouer avec les codes. Son prix astronomique n'est pas lié au coût des matériaux, mais à la puissance de l'idée, au nom de l'artiste, et à la frénésie spéculative du marché. In this week's episode of the Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view series, our heroine battles an organized crime ring in Fritz Lang's classic noir The Big Heat and the Soviets, or in any case her beleaguered circus capitalist husband, Fredric March, in Elia Kazan's Man on a Tightrope (both 1953). Nous sommes en janvier 1955, à Antibes, entre Cannes et Nice, sur la Côte d'Azur, en France. Un peu plus de deux mois avant de se donner la mort, Nicolas de Staël écrit à l'excentrique collectionneur britannique Douglas Cooper : « On fonctionne comme on peut. Et moi j'ai besoin pour me renouveler, pour me développer, de fonctionner toujours différemment d'une chose à l'autre, sans esthétique a priori … Ce qui importe c'est que ce soit juste ». En a peine cinq années, l'artiste d'origine russe, vient de peindre presque mille œuvres. Un travail acharné répondant, peut-être, autant à un besoin de survie qu'à un appel de l'abîme. Nicolas de Staël fait partie d'une génération d'artistes prêts à sacrifier leur vie pour leur oeuvre. « Il poussait la vie jusqu'à l'impossibilité de survivre », résumera, plus tard, sa fille Anne. A vingt-trois ans le peintre avait confié : « Je travaille sans cesse et je crois plutôt que la flamme augmente chaque jour et j'espère bien mourir avant qu'elle ne baisse. » Son physique ténébreux, son allure aristocratique, sa personnalité puissante et charismatique, sa trajectoire tragique ont nourri sa légende. Our Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvreview recovers from last week's rough spot with two excellent roles in two excellent films that display her range as a character actress. In Vicente Minnelli's The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), for which Gloria won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, she's a sweet but silly Southern belle curiously sacrificed by Kirk Douglas' relentlessly driven movie producer; and in Maxwell Shane's The Glass Wall (1953), she's a fed-up proletarian who rediscovers her humanity by helping Vittorio Gassman's Hungarian refugee. Our conversation moves from the opaque depths of Minnelli's Hollywood melodrama to the cruel but redeemable America of Shane's leftist docu-noir, which somehow slipped under the radar of the blacklist. In this episode of our Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view episode, our protagonist is rudely shoved into the background of the movies, barely appearing in Josef von Sternberg's Macao (1950) (she would have liked to have appeared in it even less) and playing a rote schemer in David Miller's Sudden Fear (1952). The movies themselves don't make up for her under-use, despite the amiable pairing of Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell in the former and the great Joan Crawford sobbing her way to an Oscar nomination in the latter. We do our best to articulate what went wrong for us, before turning our attention to James Gunn's Superman (2025) in our Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto segment. This week in our Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view we watched one of her best-known films, In a Lonely Place (1950), directed by Nicholas Ray and co-starring Humphrey Bogart, alongside the unpromising Cecil B. DeMille circus drama The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). This may be the only time you find these two movies discussed together with roughly equal enthusiasm. Ray's portrait of a romance doomed by male violence may have psychological perception and stylish writing, but DeMille's Technicolor spectacle has a clown with a dark secret (played by Jimmy Stewart no less), Cornel Wilde shirtless in tight pants, a train wreck, the blood transfusion bonding trope, and of course, a love-crazed Nazi dangling an elephant's foot over Gloria Grahame's face. Our Gloria Grahame Acteurist Oeuvre-view continues with A Woman's Secret (1949), an oddball psychological drama with a screenplay by Citizen Kane writer Herman J. Mankiewicz and directed by Grahame's new husband Nicholas Ray; and Roughshod (1949), a consciously feminist Western written by a bunch of leftists. Proving her versatility-within-typecasting yet again, Grahame moves easily from the unlikely comic centre of a noirish vortex to a sympathetic sex worker in a fallen woman melodrama that uses the Western genre to deconstruct masculinity. (And if that makes it sound dull, it's also incredibly dark at moments, with John Ireland raising the tension as a nasty villain.)
