On this episode, attorney and business consultant Daniel Satinsky shares about his new book, which tells the story of American participation in the dismantling of the Soviet economy and the creation of the Russian market economy in the 1990s. Creating the Post-Soviet Russian Market Economy: Through American Eyes is based on more than 100 interviews with citizen diplomats, entrepreneurs, bankers, consultants, and aid program administrators active in Russia in those years. The book chronicles the real-life experiences of these Americans as they participated in building new sectors of the post-Soviet Russian economy in finance, investment, stock trading, real estate, restaurants, public relations, law, and media (television, radio, newspapers, and movies) at a time of historically unprecedented collaboration and interaction between Russians and Americans. ABOUT THE GUEST Daniel Satinsky is an attorney, business consultant, and independent scholar. He first visited the USSR in 1984 and was active in business there and in Russia from 1990 to 2014. He is the co-author of "Hammer and Silicon: The Soviet Diaspora in the U.S. Innovation Economy" (2018). He is also former president of the board of the U.S.-Russia Chamber of Commerce of New England (1998-2014) and a Davis Center associate. He holds a master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy and a JD from Northeastern University Law School. PRODUCER'S NOTE: This episode was recorded on February 16, 2024 via Zoom. Sam is a veteran political campaign reporter and former White House correspondent. Youngman covered the presidential campaigns of 2004, 2008 and 2012, countless U.S. House and Senate races, and the administrations of George W. Today's Big Stuff (TBS) was founded in early 2019 by “Ready for Hillary” creator and Democratic strategist Adam Parkhomenko and former White House correspondent and veteran campaign reporter Sam Youngman. What started as a small clip service for six people, quickly expanded as thousands of stressed out Americans searched for a news source that tells it how it is — with lots of sick jokes and cuss words. In 2020, the more than 75,000 members of the Big Stuff community — also known as Sexy Patriots and Big Stufferinoes — mobilized along with 81 million other Americans to send Donald Trump crying back to Mar-a-Lago leaving a trail of urine along the way. And we're just getting started. Immigration and Russian foreign policy are focal points of contemporary US politics, yet little in-depth information about either is on offer. This panel discussion will address both through the lens of the unrecognized impact of the waves of Russian-speaking immigrants to the US described in Hammer and Silicon, (Cambridge University Press, 2018). The presentation of the book and the panel discussion will provide important background for current policy discussions through delving into the unintended consequences of past Soviet and Russian foreign policy that allowed for the immigration of many highly educated, talented Russian-speaking scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs to the US. Hammer and Silicon presents the untold story of the significant contributions of these technical professionals to the US innovation economy, particularly in the sectors of software, social media, biotechnology and medicine. Drawing upon more than 150 in-depth interviews split between Boston/Cambridge and Silicon Valley, the book chronicles the hardships they endured in transit and in cultural adaptation; while also exploring how they took advantage of new opportunities in their adopted homeland. Their stories and experience are part of a broader picture of immigrant contributions to the US tech sector that is extremely relevant to today’s debates over the future of immigration policy. This has been a crazy semester. Thus, I am delinquent in posting shows from this quarter. I am about to update the record. Let's start with Show # 244, October 2, my interview with Prof. Andrea Matwyshyn of Northeastern University Law School, on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and the Volkwagen fraud scandal. Andrea has been doing outstanding work focusing on how copyright law can impede the ability of computer security researchers to conduct their research. On behalf of several academic security researchers, she submitted a request for an exemption under the DMCA for such research, and found success in late October. In our interview, we discussed the nature of computer security research, the law around it, and its implications for issues like research around the still-unfolding Volkswagen scandal. I am a big fan of Andrea's work, and was delighted to have her on the show. I hope that you enjoy the interview. {Hearsay Culture is a talk show on KZSU-FM, Stanford, 90.1 FM, hosted by Center for Internet & Society Resident Fellow David S. Levine. The show includes guests and focuses on the intersection of technology and society. How is our world impacted by the great technological changes taking place? Each week, a different sphere is explored. For more information, please go to http://hearsayculture.com.}
