Trick or treat, D-Lovers! It's an October Season surprise as for the third time our hosts are watching a movie based on one specific Disney theme park ride - HAUNTED MANSION. And despite the shakey track record of the previous stabs at adapting this attraction into a narrative feature, this one ain't all that bad! Mostly it's got a pretty game cast that collectively does their best to navigate yet another movie this company made that is essentially a meditation on grief; and that goes a long way in counteracting some bad wigs, insane costuming, and a truly staggering amount of product placement.

Nearly twenty years after the first movie and seven years after our episode on it, our hosts are returning to Salem with HOCUS POCUS 2! The Sanderson Sisters are back! Billy is back! That's all who is a back! But the good news is the newcomers to the sequal are welcome additions to the lore. And despite the "straight-to-Disney Plus" level budget, this long awaited sequel manages to capture a lot of the essence of the original while still being it's own thing. All-in-all, not a bad October Season surprise. Or maybe our hosts' minds have just been poisoned after years of replacing the Sanderson Sisters with the Halloweentown Cromwell family.

Happy Halloween everyone! To help celebrate this spooky time of year, I'm joined today with author Juno Jakob. We both are devoted fans of Ray Bradbury, and we talk about him and his influence on our lives. Juno has also written a new book for YA called The Halloween Book - it is going to be released on Halloween day, and it's perfect reading for the kids in your life. Perhaps this Halloween you could hand out copies of the book instead of candy... OR BOTH! (Both is probably better...) In all seriousness, I enjoyed this discussion with Juno, and I hope you will too. So as Ray Bradbury would say, Live Forever! We close out our October Season run of programming by closing out a Disney Channel franchise with RETURN TO HALLOWEENTOWN. And while these movies may have always been dull, cheap and dumb to varying degrees, they've never been more incoherent than in this last installment. And we're not just talking about the fact that they replaced the lead actress and literally nobody else in the reoccurring cast. So it's not a fond farewell we're paying to Halloweentown, but after sitting through four of these things, it's certainly a happy one.
It's a spooky October Season surprise as the Summer of Muppets returns from beyond the grave. The scariest combination of words in this Disney+ special may just be "corporate synergy" as MUPPETS HAUNTED MANSION plays more as a cross-promotional advertisement for a theme park ride than a natural fit for these beloved puppet characters, but hey - it's still the Muppets getting to do stuff, so it's all ok in our books.

The gameday BS Predicto is back. Enjoy.
Our collective October Season nightmare of Disney Channel Original Movies continues this week with DON'T LOOK UNDER THE BED. Its fan reputation may have you believe that this is a legit spooky story, and sure there may be a jump scare or two, but overall there's just way too many vests worn by the lead character for this to be truly threatening. And it doesn't matter how mean or prankful a boogeyman (or boogeyperson) is, when contrasted with the world's most charismatic imaginary friend there's just no way to find them truly frightening.
It's October Season which only means one thing - our hosts are going to be subjected to the horrors of a bunch of Halloween-ish Disney made-for-TV movies. And as you can imagine, this one is a doozy. Because Z-O-M-B-I-E-S is in many ways the spiritual successor to a few other high school-set DCOM musicals you may have heard of, and opinions are sharply divided on whether it is a worthy successor to the throne. The stakes have never been lower and the pastels have never been more sickly.
It's the most spookiest time of the year! We're kicking off this October Season with what isn't really a Halloween movie, but hey at least we're not starting with a DCOM. So MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL will have to do. Which more or less encapsulates our hosts' feelings toward this Disney movie, as a follow-up to a film none of us really liked but had a number of things we liked about it. This sequel though? Not so much. But at the end of the day, it's still got Angelina Jolie and her striking features, weird skeleton, and delightful performance.
In Part 2 of this episode, Kamron, D'Andre, Freetown Collective and Jimmy October pick up from where they left off. They continue to talk about the lack of transparency in the local music industry, the lack of succession planning and the dog eat dog nature of the industry, assuming that an industry actually exists. They also talk about the responsibility of an artiste, the value of telling stories in art and the importance of authenticity in the creative process. Listen to the continuation of Episode 1 as they all share moments of adversity within the industry and steps that should be taken in order to push the culture forward. Kamron and D’Andre are joined by artiste duo Freetown Collective and singer/songwriter Jimmy October. Together they touch on the creation of culture through music, Nailah Blackman's tweet concerning soca music and the current state of music in the Caribbean. In addition, they explore the realms of our parent genre, calypso, and its unfortunate decline in both impact and relevance. Why hasn't calypso been able to transcend generations and why has soca music been stifled to accommodate one season and one feeling? Part 1 of this two part episode touches on these issues while allowing you into the minds of these creative geniuses. For all things Recess, check us out over here: https://linktr.ee/recesspodcast Follow Freetown Collective: @wearefreetown Follow Jimmy October: @jimmyoctober
Laurie talks about how we are evolving through this season by changing out filters of how we receive and share information. This is not something happening 'TO' us, but rather we are at this place in our personal journey that is requiring us to be curious and intentful of how we interpret information, process it is, and then choose to share it or not. Rather than 'Parroting' what we experience, we are being shown other ways, techniques and tools in how to process the world and how we are in the world. Laurie adds tips on 10 areas you can quickly elevate your frequency. This is important as we go through the remaining months of 2019 to shed and develop the filters that prepare us for 2020.

MLB.com host Mike Petriello takes a look at two of the more fascinating teams in baseball this season, the Royals and the Pirates. Travis Sawchik, recent author and award winning reporter for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, joins Statcast to breakdown how the Pirates have been so successful and why Clint Hurdle's ability to adapt to the ever-changing baseball landscape has been a key to his team's success. Plus, they'll discuss why pitchers are reviving their careers donning the black and yellow. Rany Jazayerli, longtime Baseball Prospectus writer and frequent Grantland contributor, joins Statcast to pinpoint exactly why Kansas City brought Johnny Cueto to the midwest, how the Royals' past choices has led them to their current and future success and explain why Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon, and Jarrod Dyson are such a dangerous combination in the outfield, covering the most average distance for outfielders, per Statcast.
