On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Is the Giants' platoon system just a short-term solution to a rebuild or do you think it is the long-run goal? We saw how cheap and affordable it can be to find platoon players, but I've got to think SF is hoping for mostly everyday contributors in a couple years. Thoughts? With the Giants having so many platoon positions currently, do you see more teams implementing methods to take away the platoon advantage? What might be the best way for the Giants to combat this in the future? Which minor leaguers do you see being on the big league roster on opening day and/or at some point during the year. Both players making their debut and also guys who have been up but for just short periods of time. Do you think the Giants could pull off four starters and have relievers interspersed to cover the fifth day a la Sean Hjelle, Sammy Long, Tyler Beede, etc.? Do you think the Giants would consider a six-man rotation to protect some of the fragile arms that are presently in the starting rotation? Why not bring Johnny Cueto back as fifth starter? On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses Major League Baseball's owners initiating the sport's first work stoppage since 1994. He discusses the statements from MLB and the MLBPA, how we got here, and what's likely to happen next. Ben is not optimistic about anything positive getting done for quite some time, and he worries about the very real possibility of games being lost in 2022. Next he discusses the frenzied activity that preceded the lockout. He explores free-agent spending by team, and looks at the San Francisco Giants' spending. Many fans seem to be upset that the team hasn't shopped at the top of the market so far this winter, but they can't be accused of not spending money. They're in the top 25% of teams in terms of spending this winter, and they're top 10 in spending the last two offseasons combined. No, they're not the top spending team or even top five, but they're distinctly in the upper tier and well above the league mean and median. Lastly, Ben takes a look at some of the free-agent starting pitcher classes of years past. From five years ago, it's shocking who were considered the best starters. Ben reminds fans that Johnny Cueto and Jeff Samardzija were big name acquisitions at the time, but neither contract worked out remotely as hoped. He looks at more recent signings like Dallas Keuchel, whom Ben compares to Marcus Stroman. There's a clear trend that starters break down quickly, either with injuries, poor performance, or both. Therefore, it's not shocking that the Giants haven't appeared eager to spend big/commit many years to top-of-the-market free-agent starters. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details a busy weekend that was for the San Francisco Giants. Sunday was a day of forced action, as qualifying offer and option decisions had to be made. The Giants exercised their options for Wilmer Flores ($3.5M) and José Álvarez ($1.5M), and officially declined their $22M option for Johnny Cueto, in favor of a $5M buyout. Flores and Álvarez were strong contributors for the Giants in 2021, and it's good news for the team that they'll be back next year, both in the final year of their deals with San Francisco. Cueto is officially a free agent after six mostly underwhelming years with the Giants. His first season in orange and black was spectacular, but he wasn't able to come anywhere close to it again over the final five. The Giants extended a one-year, $18.4M qualifying offer to Brandon Belt. There was some possibility that they might extend qualifying offers to Anthony DeSclafani and/or Alex Wood, but both were unlikely and the team ultimately elected to pass. This doesn't mean that they won't be back; just that they didn't extend them qualifying offers. Belt will have 10 days to accept or reject the Giants' offer. If he signs with another team this offseason, the Giants will receive Draft Pick compensation. Belt is a candidate to accept the offer, but he could also work out an extension to stay in San Francisco. Finally, Ben discusses Brandon Crawford winning his fourth career Gold Glove Award. He was spectacular defensively in 2021, which is a testament to his own hard work and the influence of Kai Correa and Ron Wotus. The Giants' new coaching staff has done a tremendous job getting the most out of players since taking over in 2020, and that includes Correa and his influence over the defense. Crawford, Belt, and Buster Posey were all at or near their best in 2021 despite being in their mid-30s. Ben reminds listeners of how significant of a loss it was when hitting coach Donnie Ecker accepted a position as bench coach and offensive coordinator with the Texas Rangers last week. Mike Yastrzemski was a Gold Glove finalist in right field, but he did not win the award. Still, it's an honor just for Yaz to have been named a finalist. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the key dates and deadlines for the San Francisco Giants' 2021-22 offseason. Things kick off with a five-day window during which time teams and players must make decisions on options and opt-outs, and teams must decide who among their eligible players to tag with the qualifying offer. The Giants hold club options over Buster Posey, Johnny Cueto, Wilmer Flores, and José Álvarez, and Ben expects the Giants to pick up the options for all but Cueto. Posey is a possible extension candidate, and there is a possibility he could choose to retire. The club also must decide whether to tag Brandon Belt, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood (the only three realistic candidates) with the one-year, $18.4M qualifying offer. Once the deadline for all of that activity passes on Sunday, free agency officially kicks off on Monday, Nov. 8. Ten days from Nov. 7, players must decide whether to accept or reject teams' qualifying offers. Two days later, on Nov. 19, teams must add eligible players to their 40-man roster if they want to protect them from selection in the Rule 5 Draft, which is scheduled to take place in early December. The Giants have several of their better prospects eligible for selection, including Heliot Ramos, Sean Hjelle, and Seth Corry. The biggest deadline of all comes on Dec. 1 at 11:59 PM Eastern, when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire. If MLB and the MLBPA don't reach an agreement on a new CBA by that time, the league may institute a lockout and a transactions freeze. All major-league dates and deadlines thereafter could be put on hold until a new CBA agreement is reached. That would affect the tender deadline, free agency, trades, and the Winter Meetings. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick names five San Francisco Giants he doesn't expect to be back in 2022. The first is Kris Bryant, which is sure to be a controversial take among Giants fans. While Ben acknowledges that Bryant is a very good player, there are several reasons to think he won't be wearing orange and black in 2022 and beyond. He's likely to have a robust market, and Scott Boras clients often don't sign until late in the offseason. The Giants aren't likely to wait around for Bryant, whose performance with the club was good but not great after he was acquired in a midseason trade. Ben also names Johnny Cueto, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Dickerson, and Donovan Solano as key players he doesn't expect to be back in 2022 for various reasons. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming offseason. He talks about the key players set to reach free agency, and the critical decisions the Giants will have to make. The first order of business is Buster Posey, who has a $22M club option for 2022 (with a $3M buyout). Posey has said that he wants to take some time with his wife to discuss his future, so it remains to be seen if he's 100 percent committed to playing next year and beyond. Brandon Belt is set to reach free agency, as is the Giants' entire starting rotation besides Logan Webb. Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood are all impending free agents, and Johnny Cueto has a way-too-expensive $22M club option that will be declined with a $5M buyout. Brandon Belt will likely be offered the $18.4M qualifying offer. Kris Bryant is set to reach free agency. Players who will be back because they're still under club control include Webb, LaMonte Wade Jr., Evan Longoria, Brandon Crawford, Tommy La Stella, Jake McGee, Darin Ruf, and Mike Yastrzemski, among others. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' upcoming NLDS matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Giants announced their playoff roster this morning, and there were a few surprises. Most notably, Johnny Cueto was left off. It's a move that makes sense, but is bound to make Cueto unhappy. Leaving Cueto off the roster gives the Giants another position player to work with, however. Steven Duggar and Alex Dickerson both made it, which will allow Gabe Kapler maximum maneuverability with platoons and pinch-hitting. That's clearly a bigger need and advantage than having an extra long reliever, a role Cueto would have filled. After discussing the Giants' official roster, Ben goes position by position, breaking down whether the Giants or Dodgers have the edge. Finally, he gives his prediction for how this series is going to end up. Watch Daily on YouTube http://bit.ly/LOGYouTube Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers listeners' questions about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are: Do you think Kris Bryant will ultimately re-sign with the Giants? Is he worth a $200M+ contract? With lots of one-year deals, some with options and others without them, how much roster turnover do you think we'll have next season? Specifically which players do you think will come back? Which players do you think may choose to sign elsewhere? Do you see Johnny Cueto making the fourth starter spot and Alex Wood taking the long relief spot for the playoffs? Seems like there is one spot available for Jay Jackson, Jose Quintana, Sammy Long and Cueto with Logan Webb, Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Jake McGee, Tyler Rogers Jarlin García, Dominic Leone, Tony Watson Zack Littell, José Álvarez, Camilo Doval seeming like locks. Rank the following from most likely to least likely as to the way Joey Bart ultimately departs from the San Francisco Giants organization: a. Release/DFA'd b. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about three things we learned this weekend with the San Francisco Giants. Kevin Gausman and Donovan Solano provided what may have been the Giants' most magical moments of the season to date. Solano tied the game with a pinch-hit homer with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the 9th. Gausman was forced to pinch hit with the bases loaded and one out in the 11th, and he delivered a walk-off sacrifice fly. The Giants won two of three against the Braves, keeping pace with the Dodgers, who won two of three in Cincinnati. Alex Wood came off the COVID-19 IL to make a start on Saturday, and he was brilliant in three innings of work. Johnny Cueto is progressing well and may make a rehab start this week. The Giants have had multiple bullpen games each week for a while, so Wood and Cueto's returns should help a tired 'pen. The Giants have a one-game lead in the NL West with 12 games to play. Ben discusses the Giants' and Dodgers' remaining schedule, and why a wild card game against the Cardinals should not be what the Giants want to see. Johnny Cueto struggled in his return from the IL, the defense was sloppy, and some key offensive contributors continued to scuffle, but the Giants are in an enviable position entering the season's stretch run. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the latest with the San Francisco Giants. Prior to Monday's series opener with the Milwaukee Brewers, Alex Wood was placed on the COVID-19 IL, and Johnny Cueto was placed on the COVID-19 protocol list. Cueto is ill but has tested negative for COVID-19. The Giants cannot afford to lose both starters for an extended period. Their rotation has been wobbly lately anyway, and losing 40% of their starting staff as September rolls in does not bode well. However, the team claimed Jose Quintana off waivers yesterday, and he could spot start. The Giants lost the game against Corbin Burnes and the Brewers, a team that nobody would want to face in October. Burnes completely shut the Giants down, and he's one of three aces on their staff. The Giants had some chances, but they hit into some very bad luck throughout the course of the game, including at some critical moments. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Johnny Cueto didn't have his best start, and the Giants offense could not battle all the way back despite numerous chances. Ben also talks about two questionable decisions by Gabe Kapler on today's show. John Brebbia was left in for a second inning after giving up a run in his first, and Steven Duggar tried to bunt with two on and nobody out in the 9th inning with the Giants trailing by just a run. A flurry of roster moves are also discussed. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down the San Francisco Giants' disappointing loss to the Cardinals, and takes a look at what to make of the upcoming schedule. Kevin Gausman took a no-hitter into the 7th, but Kwang Hyun Kim ultimately outdueled him as the Giants offense couldn't get anything going against the Cardinals' left-handed starter. Alex Dickerson homered in the 8th, which bodes well for the next two games against right-handed starters. Johnny Cueto starts against Adam Wainwright tonight in a battle of veterans, and Alex Wood takes on a young righty on Wednesday night. The Giants play the Cardinals, Nationals, and Cardinals again in their next three series, and they really ought to take advantage considering they then play the Dodgers and Astros 10 times in 13 games. The second thing we learned is that Sammy Long has earned a continued look in the Giants' rotation, which is a great development with Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, Aaron Sanchez, and Johnny Cueto set to reach free agency after the season. The final thing we learned is that John Brebbia joined the Giants' re-made bullpen, which has seen Dominic Leone, Zack Littell, and Jimmie Sherfy added in recent weeks. Quietly, the Giants' bullpen, with Tyler Rogers and Jake McGee still anchoring the back end, has been very effective over the last couple of months. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!
