Send us a textWhat drives someone to walk away from a stable career to chase their dream? Joanne Harrop did exactly that, leaving behind a decade in office equipment sales to pursue her passion for sports writing. With remarkable determination, she offered to write for free for local publications until finally breaking through as the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's first full-time female sports reporter in 1997.Sitting at Burned by Rocky Patel (which she was the first to feature when it opened), Harrop captivates us with stories from her 28-year journalism career. Instantly recognizable by the stylish hats she wears daily—a tradition started 15 years ago while covering fashion—she's evolved from sports reporting to becoming a celebrated features writer covering everything from food to real estate. Along the way, she's interviewed legends like Michael Jordan and Billie Jean King, while never forgetting Jim Leyland's advice to "act like you've been there before."The conversation takes a profound turn when Harrop shares the experience that led to her book, "A Daughter's Promise." When COVID-19 forced nursing homes to lock down in March 2020, Harrop faced an impossible choice regarding her 93-year-old mother: leave or stay indefinitely. Without hesitation, she moved in, honoring a promise made to her father years earlier. What began as a supposed two-week closure stretched into 84 days, during which her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually passed away. Her journal entries from this period became a National Edward R. Murrow Award-winning article and ultimately her book.Through laughter, tears, and Pittsburgh sports memories, Harrop reminds us of journalism's evolving nature and the profound connection between mother and daughter. Her simple explanation for staying when others couldn't—"She would have done the same for me"—encapsulates a love story that transcends circumstances. Pick up "A Daughter's Promise" to experience the full journey of a woman who found her voice by following her heart.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!www.holdmycutter.com

And so that was the biggest reason.”Now more than ever, especially in this election year of 2024, America needs Newsmax, and you can join with us as an investor,” Ruddy said. After working as a journalist at the New York Post and Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Ruddy started Newsmax in 1998. When his 6-year-old daughter becomes unresponsive, Jacob Weight calls 911. He tells dispatch one of his older children was bathing his 6-year-old when she went limp and suffered some type of seizure. First responders are met by Jacob at the door. He refuses to allow EMS into the house, telling them he must get his daughter dressed. He brings her outside where she can be seen. Police and first responders are taken aback by the conditions at the home. Trash is scattered about. Feces is smeared on the ground, and the smell of urine is very strong. The 6-year-old girl they have been called to treat is covered in open sores and KDKA reports she has extensive bruises and appears malnourished. Once the 6-year-old girl is at the hospital the full extent of her injuries is apparent. According to a medical report, her teeth are broken and rotted, and her feet are swollen. When she arrives at Uniontown Hospital, she is found to be hypothermic, with a body temperature registering at only 88.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Pennsylvania state troopers begin their investigation into the parents of the children in the house, after police note that doctors at the hospital state multiple times, that the little girl could have died as a result of the abuse and neglect. The doctors also say if she returns to her current environment she is likely to die of the abuse and neglect. During the investigation, Weight and Frost's teenage nephew, who lived with them, describes how the young girl's mother would zip-tie her hands and feet, lock her naked in a cage and refuse to wash her. Frost would also starve the little girl, not feeding her for days at a time. The floor under the cage was rotting from feces and urine that was never cleaned. WTAE reports that a 5-year-old child was interviewed and asked if anyone helped the girl clean up her poop and pee. The child responded, "They want her to eat it... my parents." Jacob William Weight, 37, and 33-year-old Mimi Ann Frost are charged with child abuse, involuntary servitude, and strangulation among several other offenses. They are accused of starving their daughter while making sure their other children and dogs, had plenty to eat. A shocking case has emerged in Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old woman, Alesia Owens, has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of her boyfriend's 1-year-old daughter, Iris Alfera. Prosecutors have charged Owens with multiple offenses, including criminal homicide, alleging that she poisoned the young girl with household items. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry made the announcement regarding the arrest. The incident dates back to June 2023 when emergency responders were called to the home of Iris' father in New Castle, located northeast of Pittsburgh. At that time, Iris lived with her father and Alesia Owens. Responders found the 1-year-old child unresponsive. Iris was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention and subsequently airlifted to UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. Tragically, she passed away on June 29, 2023. The cause of Iris' death was determined through an autopsy conducted by medical examiners. The examination revealed that she succumbed to organ failure caused by acetone poisoning, a devastating revelation. Disturbingly, investigators from the New Castle Police Department uncovered evidence suggesting that Alesia Owens had researched household products with fatal potential for children in the months leading up to the tragic incident. According to the attorney general's office, Owens conducted numerous online searches between February and June, specifically related to the circumstances of the toddler's death. These searches allegedly included inquiries about household products that could prove deadly to a child, such as water beads, batteries, and nail polish. Owens' online queries also featured phrases like "beauty products that are poisonous to kids" and "medications leading to accidental poisoning deaths in children." Furthermore, it has come to light that Iris Alfera had been hospitalized several months before her untimely demise. During this previous hospitalization, she had ingested several harmful objects, including approximately 20 water beads, batteries, and a metal screw. Although Lawrence County Children and Youth Services were alerted following this incident, no charges were initially filed, as reported by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Currently, Alesia Owens is being held at the Owens County Jail, having been denied bail. The circumstances surrounding this case are undeniably tragic and heart-wrenching, leaving the community in shock. Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry expressed her sentiments, stating, "The details of this case are heartbreaking. It is hard to fathom someone taking deliberate steps to harm a completely helpless child, then mislead investigators about what happened." As this deeply distressing case unfolds, many are left grappling with the unsettling nature of the allegations against Alesia Owens and the profound loss of young Iris Alfera. Prosecutors will continue their efforts to seek justice for the innocent child, and the community watches closely as the legal proceedings progress. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Oh, hi there, boys and girls. It's Week 11 of the college football season. Carla's voice is just about gone and Crappy is distracted (for the first time this year) by midweek MACtion and his Ohio Bobcats. So, yeah … just your normal week around these parts. Before we get into some interesting stuff coming up this weekend, we look back at some fun results from last week. Clemson had an improbable win. Texas and Ohio State won … but not prettily. Arizona (now CFP ranked) continues to be the team that absolutely no one in the Pac-12 wants to play. LSU really needs a healthy Jayden Daniels. And Bedlam actually was bedlam. Unfortunately, it wasn't a great weekend for our Cornell Big Red Bears, but they have a chance to rebound this Saturday at Dartmouth (1:30 ET, ESPN+). AJ fills us in on all of the goodness that is late-season #GroupOfFiveAfterDark (and yes, there are some really good matchups on that slate this week), and then we get into this weekend's intrigue, including a massive game that even has Crappy seeing blue (and white). No. 18 Utah at No. 5 Washington (3:30 ET, FOX): That Utah defense is spectacular against the run. Unfortunately, Michael Penix Jr. likes to throw the football. A lot. No. 13 Tennessee at No. 14 Missouri (3:30 ET, CBS): Too close to call? Kinda. Mizzou's been oh-so-close a couple of times this year. Is this the game they get over the hump? No. 9 Ole Miss at No. 2 Georgia (7 ET, ESPN): This might be Georgia's biggest test of the season … before facing Bama in the conference title game, that is. No. 3 Michigan at No. 10 Penn State (Huge Nude, FOX): Yep. Doing this game out of sequential order because it's that important. Carla's hyper-focused on the Penn State secondary, while Crappy is hoping he doesn't have to figure out the math on a three-way tiebreaker atop the B1G East. Carla gives an honorable mention to West Virginia at No. 17 Oklahoma (7 ET, FOX) because the Sooners are reeling, while USC at No. 6 Oregon (10:30 ET, FOX) should be silly fun if you can stay awake. Also, FIU at MTSU (3:30 ET, ESPN+) is worth noting because our beloved Blue Raiders need a win. Crappy is obviously paying attention to Michigan State at No. 1 Ohio State (7:30 ET, NBC), but mostly because of the Bucks' sweet gray unis. We close the show with an ode to the Biggest Little Game in America, the DIII rivalry between the Amherst Mammoths and the Williams Ephs that's been played since 1884. Former Draft Day Suit (the original home for this show) editor Kim Daboo is an alum of Williams, and our former colleague Chuck Curti, now of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, had a great article this week about two Pittsburgh-area brothers playing in the game. It's just one of the many reasons we love college football. (Also, go Ephs!) And with that … Carla's going to rest her voice and Crappy's going to root his Bobcats to (spoiler alert!) a win. We'll be back here next week for more as we start nearing the end of the 2023 season. (Can you believe it?) Cheers, yinz.

Andrew Conte serves as the founding director of the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University. He writes the Pittsburgh Public Editor column at NEXTpittsburgh. And he was an investigative reporter at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where he won numerous national, state and local awards. Andrew has published several books, including Death of the Daily News, released in September, 2022, Breakaway, and The Color of Sundays, which explores the role of race in the National Football League mainly through how Bill Nunn, Jr. and the Pittsburgh Steelers identified undervalued players at historically black colleges. Netflix has optioned the book for a potential movie, and the Independent Book Publishers Association recognized The Color of Sundays with a Silver Benjamin Franklin Award. I've read The Color of Sundays and can tell you it's a thoroughly researched, fascinating deep dive into how African Americans have become indispensable, elite players in high-profile sports. For the record, Steve and Andy have known one another for many years as colleagues at Point Park University. If Andy hadn't put out a call in 2016 for professors who might like to use the Center for Media Innovation to launch a podcast, StoryBeat would not exist.

Clara Ritger grew up in the small town of Huntington Beach, California, where she learned what real Mexican food tastes like and how to cut the line at Disneyland. At the ripe old age of two she ran as far ahead of her parents as her child leash would take her on the Yosemite trails to ask random strangers questions about why they were hiking and if they would be her friend. Since then, she has continued to ask why but usually refrains from asking subjects during interviews if they want to be her friend. She attended the University of Notre Dame, where she graduated cum laude with a B.A. in Political Science and Film, Television and Theatre in May 2013. She also has a minor in Journalism, Ethics, and Democracy, because why do college if you can't do it all?Clara is a freelance video director and producer based in New York, NY. She works across mediums in digital, TV and film, and has recently worked with NBC News, the Wall Street Journal and PBS. Her curiosity about the world has led her to tell stories across industries, including finance, health, food, travel, fashion, and the environment. She partners with media companies, brands, and nonprofits to create emotional, shareable stories.Prior to moving to NYC, Clara was based in the Washington, D.C. area as a Producer at Green Buzz Agency, where she created documentary style videos for major brands and nonprofits, including Upworthy and Make-A-Wish. She has also written and/or done multimedia work for National Journal, The Indianapolis Star, USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Patriot-News, Morning Call, Capitolwire, Northern Virginia Magazine, 88.1 WVPE NPR, the Reno Gazette-Journal, NDtv News and the oldest collegiate publication in the United States, Scholastic magazine.Clara really likes coffee, and once bought everything on the menu at Starbucks because she had extra monopoly money at school and wanted to find out what her favorite drink actually was. It cost her $134.80. She also enjoys cooking and a good book. She is not one of those freak people who enjoys running, but she does it anyway, because it is good for you, or something like that. Her middle name is Lucille, which invariably comes up in conversation, so now you know.Clara does not feel that autobiographies – especially at her age – should be taken seriously.

Seth Rorabough, of the Pittsburgh Tribune Review joined Matt and Blake joined to talk about Jim Rutherford. He is very talkative. He will talk to everyone, just not on game days as he still has that old goaltender in him. He came into PIT with a win now mentality. He identified the centre of the franchise and built around them. He struck while the iron was hot. Things fizzled out at the end as they depleted their minor league organization to win 2 cups, back to back. Doesn’t think he will be here for the long run at his age. Once Jim gets people installed at GM and AGM, we will see things get going pretty quickly. He had something like 50 trades in his time in PIT. Equates to one every month and a half. Not all of them were great but he wasn’t afraid to move on some players when they weren’t a fit. Talked about how he did signing contracts. Didn’t really strike any big FA’s. His mark was on the trade market. He made some hard decisions on guys to retain. Talked about Brandon Sutter. Says they were pretty close and JR saw an opportunity to improve the team. Talked about how Jim doesn’t let sentimentality get in the way of making a move. Scott Rintoul, Vancouver Sportscaster and our Thursday regular joined Matt and Blake. Started off with his first thoughts on Jim Rutherford. Says that this is ownership admitting a few different things. They went out and got someone who won’t be a yes-man. We are talking about a hall-of-famer here. You can’t poke holes in the credibility. People will call back on him trading for Gudbranson after this franchise got rid of him. JR doesn’t need this job, he wants to be in this. Talked about Bruce Boudreau. You don’t hire them for PR reasons, but they come with a bump. Boudreau got the bump. Talked about the game vs the Bruins. Could say that they played better when they lost in BOS compared to winning in Vancouver. The bounces would have gone the other way a couple weeks ago. Thinks that JR is the kind of President that would go down to the dressing room and talk to the players. Change is afoot in this organization. The players know that more is coming. Talked about how long the plan could last for the team. Talked about the role Henrik and Daniel have now and will have down the road. Scotty referenced the Islanders when they brought in Lou and Trotz and how quickly that turned around. Our Canucks reporter, Jeff Paterson joined in his regular spot. Started off with a quick synopsis of the Bruins games. Wasn’t as fun as the LAK game but Quinn Hughes was doing it at both ends of the ice. Talked about Tyler Myers and his 28 minutes. Talked about Demko, who has been great. One goal in the last 2 games and that was a five on three. Talked about the game-day entertainment presentation and how it’s taken a bit of a dive. JPat talked about Rutherford and if it was the right choice. Liked the hire on a lot of different levels. Talked about all the trades he pulls off. Noted that JR has traded Pearson before. Talked about the size of the new front office. Talked about potential trade chips. Says that JT Miller would be the most likely candidate. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Travis Sawchik is a senior MLB writer for theScore. A proud Ohio State grad (to the chagrin of the host), Sawchik joined the Press Pass Podcast to discuss his career at length. Sawchik started off at a small newspaper in North Carolina covering local beats before working his way up the ranks, as a prospect works his way from Single-A to the Majors. He ended up at the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, where Sawchik began to work sabermetrics and advanced stats into his writing. Sawchik entered the online-only media game about five years ago and has bopped around, finally ending up at theScore as a senior writer with the ability to tell stories while dive into the obscure stats that a segment of the baseball fandom know and love. A lone Pittsburgh Tribune-Review vending machine, on the corner of Broad Street and Highland Avenue in East Liberty, is one of the few remnants of Pittsburgh's once-thriving print newspaper industry. “We're trying to get them all picked up but there may be a few out there we'll have to get later,” said Alan Bowlby, distribution manager for Trib Total Media. Last November, the newspaper ceased production of its Pittsburgh print edition . And now the vending machines that once dotted the city Are you the producer of this podcast? Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
There was finally some news around the league today after a bunch of slow days and Hunter starts breaking it down with the loss of Dominik Simon to the Calgary Flames. Was it surprising to see Simon go to Calgary for league minimum? Should the Penguins have signed him instead of someone like Evan Rodrigues to fill a depth role? Hunter ponders that, even though Simon is great analytically with a poor shooting percentage. Besides that, Hunter breaks down the other signings that happened today with Denis Gurianov to Connor Brown, and even Dmitry Kulikov. After that, Hunter looks at some quotes from Jim Rutherford to Seth Rorabaugh from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and questions what he and his hockey operations look at when they see a player like Cody Ceci.
