On this episode, I spoke to three wonderful creatives from the Mary & George team, including makeup and hair designer Paul Gooch, production designer Helen Scott and costume designer Annie Symons. Gooch is an Oscar nominee for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, a BAFTA Award winner Alice in Wonderland, an Emmy nominee, and a Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award winner. Scott is a BAFTA Television Craft Award winner for Small Axe, a Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award nominee for The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, and a British Independent Film Award winner for Living. Symons is a BAFTA TV Award winner for Worried About the Boy, a British Independent Film Award nominee for Benediction, an Emmy winner for Great Expectations (nominee for Mary & George!), and a 3x winner of the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award. *** MORE ABOUT MARY & GEORGE: Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King's most trusted advisors. And with England's place on the world stage under threat from outside forces and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher. Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own. Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James I. The series was nominated for 1 Primetime Emmy Award.

Movie Synopsis: When a group of friends recklessly violates the sacred rule of Tarot readings, they unknowingly unleash an unspeakable evil trapped within the cursed cards. One by one, they come face to face with fate and end up in a race against death. __________________________________________________ Felix is such a badass and cool individual! This guy played the two creepiest Tarot characters in the movie. It's no wonder why this talented stuntman was chosen; performing stunts in notable movies such as: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), The Batman (2022), Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019), and Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) – just to name a few. We discussed how he was chosen for these particular roles, and it seems that the casting director has chosen the right person for the jobs. I cannot imagine what rehearsing on set must have been like, pretty tough, I imagine. However, I am thoroughly impressed with his story about that Jackie Chan plays an integral part of if his career, and no one on this planet can argue that Jackie Chan is awesome. Role models should always be mentioned in someone's stories! Hands down, I loved the movie! Stunt performers are under-appreciated, and they definitely deserve more respect than the world gives them. In my opinion, stunt performers are the backbone of the movie. So I am hoping that Felix wins an award for this role, he most definitely deserves one!

The emergence of Disney's so-called ‘live-action' remakes provides the focus of Episode 123, with the recent adaptation of Dumbo (Tim Burton, 2019) offering Chris and Alex plenty to get their teeth into thanks to the film's particular brand of digital realism as well as director Tim Burton's reflections on the very nature of spectacle itself. Special guest for this discussion is Chris McKenna, current Head of Creative Operations at the VFX studio Moving Picture Company, and Lead Technical Animator on Dumbo who has also worked on a host of Hollywood blockbusters and franchise films, including Terminator: Genisys (Alan Taylor, 2015), Spectre (Sam Mendes, 2015), Transformers: The Last Knight (Michael Bay, 2017), Ad Astra (James Gray, 2019), Cats (Tom Hooper, 2019), and Disenchanted (Adam Shankman, 2022). Among his many credits, Chris has several of the Disney remakes and spin-offs on his CV too, from The Jungle Book (Jon Favreau, 2016), The Lion King (Jon Favreau, 2019), and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (Joachim Rønning, 2019) to Lady and the Tramp (Charlie Bean, 2019) and the upcoming The Little Mermaid (Rob Marshall, 2023), where he worked as Head of Layout and Animation at MPC. Listen as the trio discuss the industrial workflow of VFX studio production, from the definition of “technical animation” to the question of simulation; how Dumbo reconciles Burton's own “flavour” as a filmmaker with its broader ‘photorealistic caricature' visual style; technological deterministic narratives of cinema and what it means for digital animation to copy lens-based media in these ‘live-action' features; how Dumbo reflexively acknowledges histories of effects and photography in its construction of screen spectacle; and how when it comes to VFX artists creativity functions as an extension of passion. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**
Today on the ninth year anniversary of Art of the Cut, Adam Gerstel and Laura Jennings discuss Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Laura has had a long career as a VFX editor on films like Sherlock Holmes, John Carter, Skyfall, and Pan. She's also edited features including Edge of Tomorrow, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Adam has been a guest on Art of the Cut before with The Lion King and The Mandalorian. He's been a VFX editor on films like The Aviator and Eat, Pray, Love. He's also edited features including The Jungle Book, and Transformers: The Last Knight.
Editors - Laura Jennings and Adam Gerstel Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania editors Laura Jennings and Adam Gerstel jumped in with both feet when director Peyton Reed suggested that he wanted to have a "unified" cutting room unlike any Marvel movie that had come before. The result? A director's cut driven by two editors, one Avid, a pair of dueling Bluetooth keyboards, and no regrets! In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which officially kicks off phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Super-Hero partners Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) return to continue their adventures as Ant-Man and The Wasp. Together, with Hope's parents Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), the family finds themselves exploring the Quantum Realm, interacting with strange new creatures and embarking on an adventure that will push them beyond the limits of what they thought was possible. Jonathan Majors joins the adventure as Kang. LAURA JENNINGS Although she's joining the Marvel family for the first time, Laura is no amateur when it comes to VFX heavy features, having previously edited films such as MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL and EDGE OF TOMORROW (aka LIVE DIE REPEAT). ADAM GERSTEL Although this is also Adam's first tour of duty in the MCU, he's no stranger to the "StageCraft" virtual set technology used in this movie. Adam worked with similar models when cutting THE LION KING and THE MANDALORIAN: SEASON TWO. Editing Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania In our discussion with Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania editors Laura Jennings and Adam Gerstel, we talk about: Tandem cutting with Bluetooth keyboards Teaching "twelve year-olds" about KEM rolls What to do when they knock five months off your schedule When your character has a giant head, every shot is a close-up Location scouting with VR headsets The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs See which Media Composer offering is right for you Hear editor Laura Jennings discuss cutting Maleficent: Mistress of Evil Listen to editor Adam Gerstel talk about his work on The Lion King and The Mandalorian Subscribe to The Rough Cut for more great interviews with the heroes of the editing room Got an idea for the show, leave a message on The Rough Cut website Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube
