Welcome back to another episode of the Christian Career Coach! I'm Susan Edwards, your host and today we're tackling that age-old question: do you need a coach for your career? Now, obviously as a career coach myself I'm a firm believer that everyone can benefit from the guidance of a career coach but I also recognize that not everyone needs a coach right away. It's important to understand when it's appropriate to utilize your own DIY resources versus investing in coaching, of course while incorporating Christian principles. You see, career development can be divided into various phases: career exploration where you're really just kind of exploring what's out there job search - actually doing a job search and searching for a position interview and negotiation so getting through that job interview knowing what to say, knowing what not to say, how to act, how to dress, and then negotiating when you get that offer - how do you negotiate for a higher salary? identity and offerings - what is the company offering to you, what's the the company culture, do you do you personally identify with the culture of the company career management - managing your career once you actually get into a role Each of these phases presents unique challenges and opportunities but they all have one thing in common: they CAN be approached through a Christian lens :) Welcome to the Christian Career Coach podcast! Visit www.ForwardsCareerServices.com today and take the leap towards a fulfilling and prosperous professional life. Welcome back, part four. We're improving our resume each day. While we're making all of these changes, by the time we're done with all six parts of this series, our resume is gonna make it through any ATS system. Any of those applicant tracking systems are not gonna hold us back from getting those interviews once we get all of these ideas and everything implemented in our resume. So today, we are talking all about the different sections of the resume and how to organize them. So it's titled Section Organization, but today, I've got five different points that I want to bring up and kind of talk you through in terms of the different sections. So the first point that we're gonna dive into is about that professional summary. So you definitely wanna have a professional summary at the beginning. So what used to be the objective statement, objective statements now in 2023 are obsolete. So if you have an objective statement on your resume, it is time to update your resume and replace it with a professional summary. So basically, a professional summary should be no more than four or five sentences and it should basically highlight your achievements and what you're looking for in your next position. So that's what your professional summary is. That's that introductory piece at the very beginning that when the reader reviews everything, they have a good understanding of your background and what it is that you're looking for. So they can easily take a look at the rest of your resume and it should match your professional summary. So whatever you do, don't copy and paste this from Google because you need it and it needs to be in your words too. My second point is to highlight your key skills and qualifications. So that particular section is gonna be, I honestly like the column style resumes. So as long as you've got your key skills, your key qualifications in their own section, then you'll be fine. Just be sure that you can highlight what those key skills are. Again, don't just go Google searching for the best key skills and qualifications that you can find for that job title. It needs to actually match with your background and your experience. And don't use the generic ones, the detail-oriented or communication skills or anything generic like that, okay? Try to be original with your key skills. If you wanna use your Google search or your DuckDuckGo search and try to find some of these top, what the top skills and qualifications are, go through the list and be original. Find the ones that actually are you and that you have a story that you can share about that specific skill or qualification. If you don't have something that immediately comes to your mind that you can actually share a real-life example of what makes you, let's say it is, let me think of a good key skill. Let's do our own little Google search real fast. Skills and qualifications is what we'll do for human resources manager. Let's try that. Skills and qualifications. You can see things like communication, which I just said, generic, not using that one. Leadership, also pretty generic. Management. Now, time management is a great one. Writing. Writing is a great one. Creativity. That's another really good one. Decision-making. That's awesome. Critical thinking. Analytical skills. These are all great ones that you can use. Empathy, of course, empathy. Those are all really great skills that could be listed if you were going for a human resources manager role and you actually had a story to tell, something that would back that up for you that shows that that really is you, that really is who you are. Okay, we're gonna move on now to the third point that I wanna make about your section organization, and that is to make sure that you provide a detailed work experience section and, again, emphasize the relevant accomplishments. This is another key to tailoring your resume for that position. So if you keep the same company and job title in all of your resumes that you're submitting, take a look at what you have listed underneath that experience section. Are you emphasizing accomplishments that are relevant to the position you are applying to? This one is really important because this is the meat of your resume. This is what really highlights what you did, what you accomplished in your previous roles that speaks to your new potential employer that tells them what you are capable of. And not only can they see that you've got it listed, you have it listed for a reason. The reason is because you've actually done it, and if you've done it before, you can do it again. So certainly if it's something that really speaks to the position that you're applying for, you definitely wanna make sure you include that. So, again, just provide a detailed work experience section and make sure that you're emphasizing those relevant accomplishments. Point number four, you want to include an education section, and within the education section, you need to make sure that you have your degrees listed, your certifications listed, and any relevant coursework. Now, here's a caveat to this. If you don't have a degree, that's when you would list out relevant coursework. If you have your bachelor's degree or an associate's degree or beyond, associate's, bachelor's, master's, or anything beyond, you do not need to list any relevant coursework. Certifications are great if they are relevant to the position. So if you're applying for an administrative role but you have your CPR certification, yeah, I don't really know how that's gonna benefit you in this role. So while you could leave that on there, my recommendation would be to not include it because it's not relevant for the role that you're applying for. So just have an education section and then make sure that you've got your degrees, certifications, and if needed, relevant coursework listed. When it comes to a high school diploma, if you don't have a degree, such as an associate's, a bachelor's, or beyond, and you are within 10 years of graduating high school, then sure, leave your high school diploma on there. If you've been out of high school for more than 10 years, you do not need to list your high school diploma on your resume. You should have something beyond a high school diploma after 10 years of experience, whether that's college experience or actual work experience. You should have gained something, whether it's a certification or something that you can highlight there that's relevant in terms of your education, again, relevant for the role that you're applying. All right, and the fifth and final point that I have about the sections within your resume is you want to consider adding additional sections, such as volunteer experience, maybe projects, or your professional affiliations. I love that professional affiliations one. I think that it speaks to not only volunteering but volunteering within your expertise, and it shows a passion for what it is that you do. I mentioned SHRM before, which is the Society for Human Resource Management. It's a national organization. There are paid positions, but there are chapters all over the United States that we're all just volunteer positions. Everything that we're doing, it's a volunteer role, but it definitely keeps us up to speed with anything relating to our industry. So I love the professional affiliations. Consider adding a section for your professional affiliations. I really do like that one. If you're not affiliated with any professional organizations, that's okay. Maybe you will be in the future. Maybe you've done it in the past, but you're not anymore. That is perfectly okay. You could actually list your professional affiliations that you were a part of previously and just put the years beside it that you were associated with them. If you like to volunteer at certain organizations, let's say Habitat for Humanity or your local animal shelter or something like that, then absolutely put that on there. That is all of these things, even projects that you've worked on, maybe a team project or even an individual project that had held some useful value either for yourself or an organization previously or currently. I would actually highly recommend have this additional section and label it as volunteer experience, label it as professional affiliations, label it as projects, whatever makes the most sense for you. But definitely, if you have something that you can list out, then definitely put it on there. I definitely recommend that. All right, so this is wrapping up part four. Again, I just want to summarize again the five points that I discussed today that are all about organizing the various sections of your resume. The first one being include a professional summary at the beginning of your resume. The second point that we discussed today is to highlight your key skills and qualifications. The third point that we discussed was to provide a detailed work experience section and make sure you're emphasizing the relevant accomplishments within that section. The fourth point that we discussed was to include an education section with your degrees, certifications, and any relevant coursework if you don't have those degrees. And then the fifth and final point from today is to consider adding additional sections such as volunteer experience, projects, or professional affiliations. So we are getting one step closer to really having a solid resume that is going to be able to clear any ATS system. Four parts down and two parts to go. Hey there, Ambitious Mama. Visit www.ForwardsCareerServices.com today and take the leap towards a fulfilling and prosperous professional life. Okay, y'all. It's day three of our six-day series, How to ATS Proof Your Resume. And today is all about clear and concise content. So, again, I have four points that I want to make. And while this may seem kind of obvious, I want to break this down to really help listeners understand what it means to have a resume that has clear and concise content. So, my first point for today is to use concise and impactful sentences so that way you can describe your experience and your achievements. Don't let your sentences run on for more than one line for your bullet points in your experience section is what I'm speaking to specifically. Obviously, your summary section up top, and if you've summarized your skills in paragraph form, then obviously that's going to be a little bit longer. However, when you're listing out that experience, the content underneath the experience section, use concise and impactful sentences. You want to make sure that you're not using too many filler words, you're not dragging on your thought, you're getting to the point. And there's a solid impact with that specific sentence that describes either your experience or an achievement that you made in that particular role, which leads to the second point, which is to focus on quantifiable accomplishments and specific results. ATS systems are very particular when it comes to showing quantifiable data. What that means is, and I've mentioned this on previous episodes also, but I want to remind you that you have to actually use numbers or percent or a dollar amount, something specific. That is what the ATS system is looking for. If your sentence is too vague, the ATS system is just going to kick you out and reject you. So if you can focus on an accomplishment that is quantifiable, so even if you're making a statement like led a team of engineers or led a team of HR professionals or led a team of front of the house employees versus back of the house employees, whatever, whatever, you're leading a team, we get it. But the way you lead a team of five is way different than you lead a team of 25 or 50 or even more. So when you put that information in, the recruiter or the hiring manager can compare what their expectations are in their role that they have open. So let's say they know their team consists of 15 to 20 people and you've only led a team of three people. It's going to be quite different and they're going to have questions on whether or not you're able to actually lead a team that big since you've never done it before. So that's why some of these things are important. They either help include you or rule you out. So keep that in mind. But they're very specific to ATS systems, also specific results. If you said that you increased sales, they want to know by how much, what percent or what dollar amount, what kind of specific quantifiable number can you put there to give a little bit more information about what you actually accomplished. Okay, so that's the second point. The third point is remove the irrelevant or any outdated information that really doesn't contribute to the current job search. So while you may be able to provide quantifiable data for maybe a lot of quantifiable data for one of your previous roles, if that role has nothing to do with the type of role that you're applying for or even in the industry that you're applying for, it's probably not worth including on your resume. So it's important that if it's irrelevant or if it's outdated, certainly if it's more than, you know, 20 years, 15 years, you know, depending on the level of position that you're applying for and how many jobs you've had and, you know, what the recruiter and job posting is requesting of you, that's really going to determine how long your resume should be. Now, a good rule of thumb is, of course, if you've got less than 10 years of experience, keep it to one page. If you've got, you know, between 10 to 20 years of experience, you move it up to two pages. And if it's 20 or more years of experience, it's okay to run into three pages. Ideally, you don't want to be more than three pages, and that's a lot to read, even for the most senior level positions, and that's because you're going to have a lot more to go along with that resume once you get to that specific level in your career. And the fourth point that I want to make today regarding clear and concise content is to prioritize the most relevant information, and just piggyback from what I was just saying, the resume length really needs to be one or two pages. So, use the rule of thumb that I just mentioned, 10 years or less, keep it to one page, 10 to 20 years of experience, two pages for your resume. Again, the most relevant information, it might not always be the most recent information, but anything that's relevant to the job that you're applying for is what you want to include in your resume. So, summarizing the four key points from today, all about clear and concise content. First, be sure to use concise and impactful sentences to describe your experience and achievements. The second point was to focus on quantifiable accomplishments and specific results. The third point is to remove irrelevant or outdated information that doesn't contribute to your current job search. And then the fourth and final point that I made today is to prioritize the most relevant information and keep the resume length to one or two pages. So, hope you had some good takeaways from today's session on continuing to ATS proof that resume, and this of course was part three. Hey there, Ambitious Mama, I hope you enjoyed today's episode of the Christian Career Coach Podcast. Visit www.ForwardsCareerServices.com today and take the leap towards a fulfilling and prosperous professional life. Part two of how to ATS proof your resume. So today's topic is all about keyword optimization. So I know you've heard this term a lot of times, and I wanted to really dive into this subject and help you understand what it means, how to actually do this in your resume to help you get through those ATS systems. So keywords, when you break that down, you want to be able to identify the keywords by carefully reading the job posting, and you want to use those terms that are industry specific. So that's the first point that I want to make here. Again, I've got four points relating to keyword optimization to help ATS proof your resume. So if you can identify keywords, reading through the job posting, whether it's online or wherever you see it, and you notice some things that are specific to the industry, whether it's the tech industry, the medical industry, the HR industry, the hospitality industry, all of those, you want to be able to identify those words that are repetitive, those words that are specific to that industry. So first and foremost, you've got to identify them. The second point that I want to make about optimizing your keywords is the resume. You need to tailor your resume to each job description. So each job posting that you see is going to be a different resume, and so you're submitting a different resume every time you submit a resume. Every time you apply, you're using a different resume, and you have to be able to incorporate those relevant keywords into your resume. And that's what we mean when we say tailor your resume. So I know that you've heard me say so many times you have to tailor your resume to the job posting. So if you combine this first and second bullet point, you're going to pull out those specific keywords from that industry, from that job posting, and you're going to embed them in your resume. So that's how you tailor it. You take the words from the posting and actually put those words into your resume, in different areas of your resume. So tailoring your resume for each job posting by incorporating those relevant keywords is my second point today about keyword optimization. The third point that I want to make is to include keywords naturally, especially when it comes to the skills section and the experience section. It should flow nicely. It shouldn't seem out of place. It should really be, it should sound natural. So as the hiring manager or recruiter is reading your resume, it shouldn't look like you've copied and pasted. If you go back to the points that I talked about yesterday with formatting, you'll see that I mentioned the consistent formatting throughout, so that has to do with the size of your fonts and the size of your headings and using standard fonts. Make sure that if you copy and paste something from a job posting, you don't just leave it as is. Try to rephrase it, reword it, so that it sounds like you and that it flows naturally with the rest of your, the rest of the points that you're making in that section. So whether it's just a list of your skills or whether it is in your experience section and you're actually spelling out what you did in your previous roles, make sure that it sounds natural and it flows easily and it looks the same as the rest of the words on the page. And then the last point that I want to make about keyword optimization is to avoid keyword stuffing. So what this means, basically you want to maintain a balance between the readability and the inclusion of those keywords. So to piggyback on the last point, there has to be a balance, so you don't want to over stuff it with keywords everywhere. You want to have a good balance. So when you read through your resume or if you have a friend or a confidant read through your resume for you, they'll be able to tell you if it doesn't sound right, if it doesn't flow, if it seems like, okay, you're really either inflating yourself or my God, this is like the job description exactly. So you don't want to overdo it. You really just want it to be really natural and make sure that it reads well and it's not overly done. So that's the four key points that I wanted to make today all about keyword optimization. So to summarize again, the first point was to tailor your resume. I'm going a little bit backwards here, but tailor your resume to each job posting by incorporating those relevant keywords. The second point being identify the keywords by carefully reading through that job posting and utilizing any of those industry specific terms. The third point is to include the keywords naturally throughout your resume, especially in the experience section and in your skills section. And then the fourth point from today's episode is to avoid stuffing the keywords, maintain a healthy balance between how your resume reads and the inclusion of those keywords. So we've got formatting done and we've got keyword optimization done. So hope you enjoyed this short episode and we'll see you tomorrow. Hey there, Ambitious Mama. I hope you enjoyed today's episode of the Christian Career Coach Podcast. If it resonated with you and provided valuable insights, I'd love for you to take just 30 seconds and share this episode with a fellow Christian professional who may benefit from the career advice and inspiration. In today's complex and fast-moving business environment, it's important to leverage technology and automation in all your business systems. Through strategic alliance with Blackline, which supports activities not managed by ERPs, but that are critical to business stakeholders and their performance analytics, planning and decision process, our professionals will cover issues facing the modern accounting and finance department, and how your business can use technology to help automate substantiation of reconciliations and mitigate risks to ensure integrity during the record-to-report process. This allows financing staff and management to make sound and timely business decisions from valid results. To unpack these topics, we look to Susan Edwards from our Accounting Advisory practice, who not only helps our clients implement BlackLine, but has also been on the industry slide utilizing BlackLine and has experienced both transformative perspectives. Joining the Cherry Bekaert team on the podcast is Michele Quartel, a trusted advisor to the BlackLine Partner ecosystem. Moderating the topic is Garrett Buckless, a Senior Manager in the Accounting Advisory practice at Cherry Bekaert. Cherry Bekaert's Accounting Transformation Advisory practice is focused on technology-driven solutions for building foundational accounting needs, optimizing processes, and designing advanced digital controllership functions, which increases productivity, reduces costs, and improves reporting. In this week's episode, Susan Edwards returns for the conversation with Jason. Susan is a member of United Blood Trackers, an organization dedicated to helping hunters find their lost game with the use of dogs and originally appear on Ep 59: The Benefits of Blood Tracking Dogs. In that episode, they talked about Susan's 2 accomplished beagles that she uses to help hunters in Pennsylvania find deer and bear after they have been shot. They talked about how the dogs work, why this is an important tool for hunters, and the do's and don'ts of tracking game before calling in the dogs. This week, the focus is on training dogs. Susan gives us the general step by step process she uses to train her dogs to track. Some of the steps make perfect sense, others make sense once she explains her reasoning. If you have ever trained a dog, you'll understand that aspect! If you have thought about training your dog to track deer and bear when there is not a blood trail present, you'll want to listen to this one. Justice is an omnipresent theme in any true crime story. It's part of what helps to move any case towards a satisfactory conclusion: once we understand what crimes have been committed, we instinctively want the bad people to be punished for them. The legal process that brings this about is a big part of a story like this. As the drama reaches its conclusion it is worth unpicking exactly why it happened like it did, and how you go about turning that often technical detail into compelling television. At the same time, we need to be aware that there is more than one kind of justice. Beyond the details revealed by solicitors and detectives, as they absorb the case the viewer develops a larger sense of what is right and just, separate to a verdict that is handed down in court. Is it ever justified for an abuse victim to take justice into her own hands, as Susan Edwards claims to have done after decades of provocation? In this episode we look at the different ways that justice is served, or not, in this story. Plus, we take a deeper look at how the writers and creatives decided to end their story in such a surprising style that asks questions of the case and of the whole nature of the true crime genre itself. Caroline Crampton is joined by Landscapers creator Ed Sinclair, local journalist Andy Done-Johnson and cinematographer Erik WilsonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The crucial next ingredient to any great true crime story is the emotional wallop. Right when you think it’s all about the oddity of the case – the safe waters of “weird” – you get hit with that emotional wave. With the Mansfield Murders, the strange facts of the case are what catch the eye, but it's the deep emotional current that holds your attention. In this episode we get to know Susan Edwards as a person. Her backstory makes us question our initial assumptions about her motivations and experience. As we hear from people who know the real life Susan and Chris, we come to see a more nuanced picture where trauma and perspective suggest there is more to this unusual couple’s story than meets the eye. Caroline Crampton is joined by Ed Sinclair, creator of Landscapers, as well as Susan and Chris’s solicitor Darrell Ennis-Gayle and actor Dipo Ola.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

#Nashville is hot. Much larger than Atlanta, its metro population is surging, and this vitality is reflected in multiple ways. In this episode we hear from Susan Edwards, the director of its Frist Art Museum since 2004, and learn about the institution's origins in an Art Deco post office and its trajectory to become of the South's most vital museums, along with the city's philanthropic culture, its stubborn identity as a democratic stronghold in a reliably Republican state, the challenges it met and addressed throughout 2020 to today, and the arc of her career—up to and including recent certification in art crime training. Equipped with a doctorate in art history and a knighthood conferred by the French Republic, she has flourished in a cultural milieu best known for a sister organization called the Grand Old Opry—and brought diversity and distinction to Tennessee without a hint of pretension.

The so called 'rough sex gone wrong' defence came under intense criticism during the trial of the killer of British backpacker, Grace Millane. Her killer said she died accidentally after asking to be strangled during sex, but his defence was rejected and he was convicted of her murder. Subsequent UK research has revealed a tenfold rise in the past 20 years in the number of times 'rough sex gone wrong' type claims were made in UK courts. Women's rights campaigners say killers in the UK, New Zealand and elsewhere are becoming increasingly aware of this defence and its potential success. Now, the UK Justice Minister is to ban the defence. Susan Edwards is a barrister and professor of law at the University of Buckingham who has looked at cases in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia.
Global pandemic. It still seems surreal to say those two words and yet, the reality of the worldwide COVID-19 crisis is a constant part of our lives. In this week’s CLT Alliance Talks, Rod Garvin, SVP of Talent Insights, speaks with Susan Edwards, Global VP and Chief Human Resources Officer at Sealed Air.
The Unnoticed Murders of the Wycherley's and The Black Prince of Lygon Street...In October 2012, a woman called the Nottinghamshire police in England, to report that William and Patricia Wycherley had been killed 14 years earlier and she knew where their bodies were buried. If she was telling the truth, why had nobody reported the couple missing? And what did their daughter Susan Edwards and her husband Christoper have to do with it?Alphonse “The Black Prince of Lygon Street” Gangitano has been described as a loving husband and father and as a vile gangster and murderer. From the 1970's right through to the late 90's, the Black Prince ruled over Carlton, brutalising it's residents with extortion, drug dealing and murder. Mate of Christopher “Mr Rent-to-Kill” Flannery, enemy of Mark “Chopper” Read, he was leader of the feared Carlton Crew which included members Graham “The Munster” Kinniburgh, Mario Condello, Mick Gatto and Jason and Mark Moran. Seemingly unstoppable, the prince went too far and couldn't predict his best friend would turn on him.Become a Bloody Murder Patron (for as little as $1 per month, which you can cancel at anytime) and have access to dozens of Patron only episodes (including our whole first season!) with new patron only content added every month!Go to https://www.patreon.com/bloodymurderLevels $5 and over go into our monthly merchandise draws and get FREE stickers and hand-made Barney Badges!See our website! bloodymurderpodcast.com for all our social media links, contact details, a gallery, fabulous merchandise (check out our new Bloody Murder SHOES! and now STICKERS and BACKPACKS and DUFFEL BAGS!!) and much much more.Wanna buy us a drink? Music, food, games and a puppy-kissing booth were just some of the activities at this year’s Relay For Life at Wright State University. Relay For Life is a grassroots, community-based team event where participants raise money to fight cancer while walking several miles with their teams. This year’s event was kicked off with a personal speech from Wright State’s provost Susan Edwards, who has breast cancer. “The money that you raise tonight goes towards understanding a better cure,” said Edwards. The event was Disney-themed and included a survivor and caregiver walk, a luminaria ceremony and closing ceremony to unify participates and commit to fight for a cancer-free world. The relay took place in the Student Union Apollo Room on Feb. 8. Organizers hope to donate $16,000 to the American Cancer Society.
