The Villainous Origin Story of Calvinism

In today's show, I explain why Calvinism has earned such a controversial reputation and why I strongly oppose it. We dive deep into the dark origin story of Calvinism, exploring how much of its foundation comes from the philosophies of men like Augustine and Plato rather than the Bible. From John Calvin's troubling actions in Geneva to the disturbing theological implications of immutability, you'll see why Calvinism, in my view, not only distorts the nature of God but also leads to a dangerous misrepresentation of Christianity. Watch to learn why Calvin's harsh treatment of heretics and his unbiblical reliance on pagan philosophy still affects the Calvinist worldview today. đź“–Want access to Over 2,000 hours of Bob Enyart Bible Studies from an Anti-Calvinist, Open Theist perspective? Chapter 3 Para. 5 Unconditional Election

One of the Solas of the Reformation is Sola Gratia, by grace alone. As we come to chapter 5 of the chapter on God's Decree, we come to consider the positive position on how God decrees to save His elect. We have considered the general characteristics of God's plan, that it is eternal, unconditional, immutable, universal and impeccable. We shut the door on any notion of middle knowledge where God looks down the corridors of time and orders His will around some hypothetical willing on our part. We noted the difficult doctrine of double predestination in angels and men and looked at the asymmetry in salvation and passing over. Then last week we had to shut another door on the Socinian and Open Theist view of God. Finally now in paragraph 5 we come to a positive explanation of how God decrees salvation for His elect. As already stated the thread that we will see woven throughout this paragraph is that we are saved by grace alone. Not only in the way God comes to us in time and works by His power to draw and keep us; but also in how He originally chose us as His elect. Works are denied a determining place in our salvation either in time or in eternity; in the application of redemption or in the planning of salvation. We are saved by grace alone. As we go through this paragraph we will look at it in two parts, the first part of the paragraph considers the positive part of how God elects to save us; the last part of the paragraph looks at how God did not elect us to salvation. In this episode, we welcome a Latter-day Saint guest to Outer Brightness. Tarik D. LaCour is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at Texas A&M University. The topic of free-will (or moral agency) is deeply intertwined with LDS theology. Philosophically, Tarik holds to the position of soft determinism. That position is often called Compatibilism, and is the view that human free-will is compatible with God's omniscience. Compatibilism is the position often taken by Calvinists. Latter-day Saints are typically Libertarian when it comes to the concept of free-will, and some even adopt the Open Theist view, which holds that God does not have exhaustive foreknowledge of future events. In this first installment, we get to know a bit about Tarik's background and philosophical interests, and we dig into the theological point (uncreated intelligence/intelligences) that divide LDS cosmology from Christian cosmologies, and touch on why LDS think their view is superior (i.e. that it better accounts for the problem of evil). If these topics interest you, then join us for a fun discussion. You can connect with Tarik on Facebook and request access to his blog: http://humefootnotes.blogspot.com/

Turretinfan and I disconcurred on God's creating the wicked for the day of trouble is God's reprobation of individuals to hell or God's arranging disasters like Job's or like wicked nations attacking Israel. We discussed the KJV on Proverbs 16:1, which seems to indicate God forms plans within man's heart by saying “the preparation of the heart in man…is from the Lord” compared to the ESV which seems to indicate men make their own plans by saying “the plans of the heart belong to man”. We concurred that Proverbs 16:4 seems to imply God has a pre-creation plan for wicked people although we noted an Open Theist reading might be like “if someone becomes wicked, I will punish them”. We also briefly discussed the radical translation difference for Proverbs 26:10 “The great God who formed all things both rewardeth the fool and rewardeth transgressors.” (KJV) compared to “Like an archer who wounds everyone is one who hires a passing fool or drunkard.” (ESV)

My guest this week is Erin. Erin is working toward her chaplaincy and her Master's degree in Practical Theology. She describes herself as “religious, but not spiritual.” Erin grew up in Northern Ireland. She was raised to respect all people. But when she was accepted by an Evangelical Presbyterian church she became in her words “the worst kind of fundamentalist.” This included deriding Catholics. At University she excelled and found herself attracted to more liberal theologies. She says she went from Evangelical to an Open Theist to a functional atheist (agnostic). Erin also happens to be on the Autism spectrum. This had an impact on her inability to accept things on faith. She needed logical consistency. But Erin still finds value in the Christian tradition. She plans to do good in the world as a chaplain. Finally, we're at the last episode on Molinism (although we certainly will be dealing with it in many future episodes). In this episode, Tim and I interact with one of the most common objections to Molinism: the grounding objection. Many opponents of Molinism feel as though this quite a strong argument against Molinism, but Tim and I don't really feel its force. In fact, as Tim shows in this episode, if the grounding objection were to be a good objection, then it follows logically that Open Theism is true! Now, this is hardly a problem for the Open Theist, but, for the Calvinist (who commonly presses this objection), this is a huge issue! Thanks again for continuing to share the show. We're growing by each episode, and that is only possible because of you guys. If you connect with the mission of Freethinking Ministries, the best thing you can do is to share this show with a friend. And if you do that, we'll keep making episodes of the Freethinking Podcast!

In this episode we continue to explore the question of whether or not Open Theism can properly be categorized as "Arminian" theology. We also want to clarify that these two episodes (15 & 16) were never intended to be a full blown attack on Open Theism, rather they were simply made to inform our listeners what Open Theism is and then determine whether or not Open Theism could be properly considered Arminian or not based on the writings of Arminian scholars. In this episode we read through some quotes by Clark H. Pinnock and ask whether or not he truly took a theological pilgrimage from Augustine to Arminius, or if he went further than Arminius in his pilgrimage. Then we weigh in on some opinions by Thomas C. Oden and John Mark Hicks regarding whether or not Open Theism can properly be considered Arminian or not. Don't miss the next two episodes of Remonstrance that will be released in June where we will revisit Open Theism again doing a source by source comparison of the writings of Arminius, Wesley, and prominent Open Theist authors. Once again it is clear that Arminius was no Open Theist in his understanding of the knowledge of God.  Links: http://wesley.nnu.edu/arminianism/the-works-of-james-arminius/volume-1/public-disputations/disputation-4-on-the-nature-of-god/ (Note: you need to scroll down to the section titled ON THE UNDERSTANDING OF GOD)

Guest: Joseph Sabo In this episode we discuss the role of prophecy in Open Theism. Does Biblical prophecy resemble an Open Theist model or that of exhaustive divine foreknowledge? There are some who believe that God is continually creating. Consider that Open Theism is an incoherent system because it tries to keep God and give up God at the same time. In Process Theology, God is identified with all the possibilities. Process Theology teaches that what is creating the future is the present. Both Open Theism and Process Theology end with God waiting to see what we will do. The Consider the example of a director and a play. If Predestination is a human term for an eternal reality which is that God has determined to create the world from beginning to end that He wants and the best language to use is Predestination, then it works. If we try to bring God's causality into the world, both the Reformed and Open Theist answers fail. The hugely important point is to recognize the Creator-creature distinction. Most are inconsistent on the sovereignty and free will topic. Explore the issue of Prayer and Causation. If causation is in the world, what is prayer? If prayer is an event in this world, what is prayer going to cause? When does God's causation, in response to that prayer, have to have started? Consider that really all that prayer can do is change you. For science, prayer only changes the mental state of the person praying. In the Open Theism issue, when all causation is internal and God does not really know if we are going to pray, there is not much left for prayer. Explore the role of prayer in Pastoral Counseling. Prayer changes our attitudes about something. We can't know the future. God can only guarantee the future within this world by force - by constraining the actors and making them do it. Whether or not prayer has occurred is part of the unknowable future. In Fatalism, the question is asked, “Why should we pray because God will do what He will do anyway”. When we yank sovereignty down into this world and make it a force amongst other forces we end up with Deism. If we keep sovereignty transcendent and God's, then it is not fatalism.

Brandon is an Open Theist and he shares his worldview on the podcast. I ask him his arguments as to why he believes this particular concept of God. He juxtaposes Open Theism against Molinism and the Calvinist Concept of God. And we respond to the comments on my Facebook Post about open theism.
