Jupiter begins its year-long transit through Gemini on May 25, 2024, so we turned it into a Serendipity Session! We riff on a specific yet understated theme that Jupiter in Gemini is likely to expose: the need to transcend opposing forces. The world is seen through a binary lens in many ways. Gemini will highlight the contradictions, juxtapositions, dichotomies, contrast, and duality that's present in so many aspects of our lives. But Jupiter has an ability to create a mystical union when faced with opposites. Unlike our subject-specific deep dives and guest interview episodes, The Serendipity Sessions is a raw reflection of the genuine bond we share. We have no rules and no episode notes in advance, just a free-flowing exchange of thoughts and emotions. It's an exploration of the outer banks of consciousness where untamed treasures are hidden away. We believe one sudden insight can hold immense value, far beyond most meticulously planned discussions. Each session is a unique encounter with chance as we defy routine and enjoy a spontaneous dance with spirituality. We aim to keep these episodes as evergreen as possible, so you can find your way here whenever you need to. And hopefully, you'll encounter pieces of yourself every time you join us.*******************************P.S. Rate us 5 stars please and leave us a review! Soteriology 101: Former Calvinistic Professor discusses Doctrines of Salvation
Dr. Leighton Flowers plays a clips from a recent broadcast from Doxalogic Podcast, where a group defended Calvinism's view of Compatibilism without really saying anything that distinguishes Calvinism from the rest of Christianity, and while seeming to dismiss logical coherence as important when coming to one's interpretation of scripture. From the tug-of-war between determinism and libertarianism to the harmonious dance of compatibilism, this episode explores the diverse philosophies shaping our understanding. Touching on quantum indeterminacy and the captivating insights from neuroscience. Discover the illusion of choice influenced by culture and deep philosophical ponderings. This isn't just a discussion; it's an exploration of the very essence of what makes us human.
This is our first episode in a series about Free Will, Compatibilism, and Determinism. Stan, JP, and Jordan start by clearing up some of the major confusions that plague this conversation. They share how to have this discussion with clarity and keep the focus on the claims and avoid confusion. They also spot some ideas about Free Will, Compatibilism, and Determinism “in the wild.” In this podcast, we discuss:What does it mean to be “free”?What are the major ideological camps in this conversation?Does the Compatibilist view of antinomy solve this logical problem? What are the most important distinctions in the Free Will and Determinism conversation?Where are the major pitfalls in this discussion? Where should we start the conversation if we want to gain understanding? What would evidence for Libertarian Free Will look like?A quiz and clues for JP and Stan on how to decipher what ideology an author or other content creator is communicating. Are we the architects of our destiny, or merely puppets dancing on the strings of unseen forces? This tantalizing question lies at the heart of the free will debate, a realm where philosophy and science intertwine in a complex dance of possibilities and perspectives. Imagine a world where every decision you believe you make freely is actually the end product of a prewritten script, directed by the subconscious mechanisms of your brain. The notion that freewill might be an illusion, a narrative crafted by our neural circuits, shakes the very foundations of our belief in personal autonomy. Yet, this deterministic view is being increasingly challenged by a convergence of emerging scientific pursuits. Compatibilism offers a middle ground, suggesting that free will coexists within deterministic processes, reframing our agency while acknowledging the influence of various factors. Evolutionary perspectives shed light on how decision-making abilities may have developed as adaptive functions, hinting at a complexity in human cognition that transcends mere deterministic reactions. Additionally, quantum mechanics introduces elements of unpredictability and indeterminism at a fundamental level, opening new avenues for the existence of free will in a not entirely predetermined universe. As we ponder these evolving theories, they invite us to reconsider our views on ethics, responsibility, and personal growth, challenging our understanding of human agency and decision-making. This intellectual journey into the landscape where science and philosophy converge not only unravels mysteries of the human will but also prompts us to rediscover our role in shaping our destinies.
In this episode, I engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Professor Christopher Gill of the University of Exeter. As a renowned scholar in Ancient Thought and author of several influential books, including the recent "Learning to Live Naturally," Professor Gill shares his deep insights into Stoicism. Our discussion centers on Stoic Compatibilism, Nature, Free Will, and Autonomy, offering a unique perspective on these classical concepts. Professor Gill elaborates on the Stoic view of universal causal determinism and how it coexists with human autonomy and rationality. He emphasizes that adult humans, unlike other beings, possess the ability to make rational choices, setting them apart in the deterministic framework of the universe. The conversation also addresses common misconceptions about Stoicism, particularly the notion of fatalism. A highlight of our discussion is Professor Gill's explanation of the Stoic interpretation of free will and autonomy, which differs significantly from modern concepts. He clarifies the Stoic stance on determinism and responsibility, illustrating how past experiences and actions shape our decisions, yet we remain the architects of our destiny through the character we develop. Additionally, Professor Gill discusses his latest book, shedding light on core Stoic ethics, the process of learning to live in accordance with nature, and Stoicism's relevance to contemporary ethical challenges, including environmentalism. This episode not only deepens the understanding of Stoicism but also connects ancient philosophy to modern-day contexts, making it a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of ancient wisdom and contemporary thought. -- Support my work directly on Patreon : https://stoicismpod.com/members Subscribe to my Everyday Stoicism blog : https://everydaystoicism.com Join the Actual Stoicism discord community : https://stoicismpod.com/discord -- Online copy of Meditations (A.S.L Farquharson) : https://link.stoicismpod.com/farquharson Online copy of Enchiridion (Elizabeth Carter) : https://classics.mit.edu/Epictetus/epicench.html Learn more about your ad choices. If God is sovereign, then how can we have free will? This is a question that has puzzled Christians and kept theologians debating for centuries now. On the surface, it seems like a conundrum. Some argue that we must be totally free otherwise we would be like robots. Others have argued for a type of hard determinism that resembles pagan fatalism and fate. Many just throw up their hands in frustration. Is there any way we can know for sure? In this episode, we start a series where we'll be taking a deep dive into the mysteries of God's sovereignty and human responsibility. In this first episode, we'll start by clearly defining our terms and looking at what is meant by Libertarian Free Will and Biblical Compatibilism - two important phrases in this discussion. From there, we'll continue by looking at some important Biblical texts and what they clearly teach. We'll end off this series by contemplating what this means about the fact that evil exists, some pastoral implications and answer some objections. Jordan and Brandon are joined by London Lyceum fellow Taylor Cyr to chat about free will, compatibilism, and manipulation. They consider what all these terms mean, what the biggest objections to compatibilism are, what it means to be manipulated and if it undermines free will.Find more info about the London Lyceum or contact us at our website.Resources:1) Find all of Taylor's work at his website2) Find Taylor's top five recommended books on free will here3) Frankfurt, Harry (1969). “Alternate Possibilities and Moral Responsibility,” Journal of Philosophy 66: 829–8394) Responsibility and Control, John Martin Fischer and Mark RavizzaSupport the show
Free will is the underlying principle of our criminal "justice" system. Without the ability to blame people for their "crimes," we would be forced to focus on prevention instead of revenge, restoration instead of retribution. But free will is not a thing. The illusion of free will isn't even a thing. In this episode, I will take a stab at explaining why so many people still claim to believe that free will aligns with their experience of the world, even though it clearly does not.
In this episode, we talk with Michael McKenna about semicompatibilism (or, perhaps better, source compatibilism). We discuss two versions of the view: “mesh” theories (including Harry Frankfurt's hierarchical model) and reasons-responsiveness theories.Michael's website: https://msmckenna.com/Michael's book, Conversation and Responsibility: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/conversation-and-responsibility-9780199740031?cc=us&lang=en&Harry Frankfurt's paper, “Freedom of the Will and the Concept of a Person”: https://www.jstor.org/stable/2024717?seq=1If you have a question you'd like us to answer in our Q&A episode, get in touch with us at thefreewillshow@gmail.com, via the show's website: thefreewillshow.com, or through social media:Twitter: https://twitter.com/thefreewillshowInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefreewillshow/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/The-Free-Will-Show-105535031200408/
