Donald Trump has taken aim at the administrative state in his first term, but does government bureaucracy have to be a bad thing? Complex societies require complex organizations to manage their functions. Can right-wingers make the administrative state work for them or is there something inherently dangerous about its existence? Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, host of the "PolicySphere" podcast, joins me to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

A few days ago, a Pascal Emmanuel-Gobry tweeted a chart showing the plummeting birth rate of Oman. Oman is a hereditary monarchy under sharia law—the last place you would expect the longhouse and the resulting TFR decline to touch. Pascal tweeted: “Something incredibly bizarre is happening, all over the world, and it is completely unstudied.”And it's true. We can blame American wokeness all we want, but in fact we're facing a worldwide problem that seems to permeate everywhere. It's such a huge change occurring right in front of our eyes that we can barely see it.One explanation is technology—“the Borg” as thinkers like James Poulos call it. The idea here is that wokeness is actually just the special sauce on top of a all-powerful machine that wants to reduce human beings to easily interchangeable cogs. Immutable characteristics like race and gender get in the way of human fungibility, so there's a ever-present inertia to get rid of them. However, the explanation that I keep coming back to over and over again is Astral's metaphysical one. Put simply, we were in the Age of Pisces for 2000 years, and we just shifted to the Age of Aquarius. Pisces is the last sign in the zodiac, Aquarius is the first. The meaning? Everything is new. The whole world is upside down/underwater. All the old monsters—famine, flooding, raiding, etc—are dead. They'e been replaced by new ones like, perhaps, sterility. And with new kinds of monsters come new kinds of heroes to slay them.Astral's pod where he breaks this down: Astral's SubstackVideo of this episode: Get full access to The Carousel at www.carousel.blog/subscribe

Pascal joins me from his lead-lined wine cellar via Ham Radio (Radio Jambon in French), so excuse the wild audió. It's partly his incessant smoking and partly my incompetent amplification. We talk about the consulting farms masquerading as College that we both attended, Catholicism, Neoliberalism (as always), weak men, and our love of, and pretty much existence as, Internet Weirdos. Pascal is a fellow at the Ethics & Public Policy Center and writes for all the big name brands in journalism and is NOT the France whisperer, so get that out of your head. You can find him at @pegobry on Twitter. Audio isn't ideal but workable. In this episode, we sit down with a Paris-based journalist, Pascal Emmanuel-Gobry, who provides insights on the changing role of religion in Europe. Amidst the rise in immigration and growing populism across the continent, is there a pluralist vision large enough to introduce healthy constraints and advance human flourishing between discrete communities? In advance of a November Faith Angle Forum, Pascal offers his best thinking.
Is the conservative backlash against French secularism warranted? Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry of the Washington DC Based Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) this week wrote that "Secular" is French for "anti-Muslim" and yet he ignored the entire threat of domestic and global Islamism. Dr. Jasser exposes some of the intellectual malpractice of conservative anti-secularism and how their misplaced obsession with secularism when combined with a malignant blindness for the threat of Islamism is suicidal, ignorant, and just what the Islamists want. Also, where's the media coverage of Turkish President Recip Erdogan's open encouragement of child martyrdom and an AKP Islamist Party gathering this week? Yet we still wonder how Muslims are radicalized? Last why the future of western and global security rests in free markets and the private companies of the free world.
