It's Friday, May 2nd, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistan's record 344 blasphemy cases against Islam A human rights watchdog group chronicled a record 344 new so-called “blasphemy” cases in the 96 percent-Muslim country of Pakistan in 2024, highlighting increased abuse of the country's condemned blasphemy laws, reports Morning Star News. The top three categories include “hurting of religious sentiments,” “desecration of the Quran,” and “disrespecting [their false prophet] Muhammad.” Of the 344 new blasphemy cases, 70 percent of the accused were Muslims, 6 percent were Christians, 9 percent Hindus, and 14 percent Ahmadis, according to the Annual Human Rights Observer report issued by the Center for Social Justice. Between 1994 and 2024, the report stated that at least 104 persons in Pakistan accused of so-called “blasphemy” were executed extra-judicially. Mike Waltz out as National Security Adviser Mike Waltz is out as President Donald Trump's national security adviser and is instead his new nominee for ambassador to the United Nations in a major shake-up of Trump's national security team, reports USA Today. On May 1, Trump said that Waltz was leaving his White House post, confirming a departure that was reported hours earlier amid the continued fallout after Waltz accidentally invited a journalist into a messaging chat in which top national security officials discussed plans for Yemen airstrikes. United States and Ukraine sign rare earth metals agreement On April 30th, the United States and Ukraine finally signed the minerals deal that was delayed by the now-infamous Oval Office exchange between the U.S. and Ukrainian presidents two months ago, reports The Epoch Times. With China continuing to tighten its grip on critical minerals after the imposition of U.S. tariffs, control of so-called “rare earth metals”—essential for the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines, and smartphones—is becoming ever more important. One challenge is that 20 percent of Ukraine's mineral resources, including about half its rare earth elements deposits, are in areas under Russian occupation. The agreement stipulates that future American military assistance to Ukraine will count as part of the U.S. investment into the fund, rather than calling for reimbursement for past assistance. Jewish author David Horowitz, defender of Christians, has died On April 29th, conservative Jewish author David Horowitz died at the age of 86, reports NewsMax.com. His story is one of a self-proclaimed former Marxist who had "second thoughts" on Leftist ideology and became a conservative stalwart and a fierce defender of religion and President Donald Trump. In fact, Trump used the title of Horowitz's book Final Battle: The Next Election Could Be the Last to make it a prevailing theme in hundreds of Trump campaign rallies leading up to his 2024 re-election. In Final Battle, Horowitz had predicted the leftists, so fearful of Trump's return to the White House, would stop at nothing, including indictments against the former president. The effort backfired, as Trump's campaign raised millions off the indictments and would ultimately knock out the Biden family dynasty and defeat replacement candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Horowitz's books often dealt with his conversion to become a Republican during Reagan's administration, the fight from the Left against religion, and the Left's seeking to destroy America. A practicing Jew, Horowitz said one of the most important books he wrote was entitled Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America—which detailed the Left's war on Christianity, which, he warned, would lead to making the religion illegal and open for persecution. Psalm 27:1 should be the guiding verse of all Christians who are persecuted worldwide. “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” Companies bolt from Homosexual Pride Month And finally, two years after transgender Dylan Mulvaney's catastrophic undoing of Bud Light, June's over-the-top sexual perversion celebration—at least as a wholesale business concept—is dead, reports The Washington Stand. For most CEOs, it's been a year of unprecedented realignment. Dozens of major brands are following up on their commitments to drop Diversity Equity Inclusion, and leftist political causes, prompting them to drop sponsorships of June's marquee events. The first warning shots were fired in March, when organizers of the San Francisco Homosexual Pride Parade confessed that they were having trouble hanging on to corporate sponsors. The signature event in America's Homosexual-Transgender Paradise has already lost $300,000! Among those who pulled back were big-time names like Comcast, Anheuser-Busch, and Guinness/Smirnof. Plus, at major Homosexual-Transgender Pride events across New York City, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C., gun-shy businesses are running for the exits. According to the Wall Street Journal, Mastercard, PepsiCo, Nissan, Citibank, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Darcars Automotive Group are opting out of major sponsorships altogether. Most businesses are even asking to have their names and logos removed “from official displays and apparel.” More executives have decided it's financial suicide to team up in any meaningful way with June's in-your-face celebration. In fact, 39 percent of corporate leaders plan to decrease their observance of Homosexual-Transgender Pride this year, according to Gravity Research. The result? A massive shortfall in funds for Homosexual Pride-fests on both coasts. Bloomberg noted six in ten “point to President Donald Trump's policies regarding transgenderism and diversity, equity and inclusion as a driver. Almost 40% of all firms raised concerns over criticism from conservatives and customers.” Appearing on Washington Watch, Will Hild, executive director of Consumers' Research, is delighted. HILD: “I couldn't have asked for more. It's been such an incredible whirlwind of pushback and Executive Orders on the entire DEI-grift complex. So, I think it's been fantastic. We've seen what this is doing to the federal government, but I'm hopeful over the next 100 days, we're going to start to see this trickle through to the for-profit sector, the corporate sector.” Hild had a word for Christians and conservatives as well. HILD: “I think conservatives tend to only think of their power being in terms of their wallet. In other words, if they don't like a company, what they're doing, they just won't shop there. “They spend millions upon millions of dollars trying to figure out why people shop at Target or Walmart or go to a different place. It's a lot easier when you send an email or call somebody and say, ‘I don't appreciate this thing.' We saw this with Target. We saw this with Budweiser. It went viral on social media. “Say something both to the company and say something on social media because they track that kind of thing. So, I would say, use both your wallet and use your voice.” Sign up to receive a weekly text message from Consumers' Research that will alert you to a different woke company which you can email or call. Ephesians 5:11 says, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, May 2nd, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's Thursday, May 1st, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Police attacked Christians in India The All India Christian Council called out officials in Odisha State, India last week for violence against Christians. The council found that police assaulted tribal Christians, attacking women, children, and priests back in March.  International Christian Concern reported a particularly disturbing event. “A 62-year-old woman who had buried her husband just hours earlier was also allegedly beaten up, along with her 17-year-old daughter, while they were in mourning.” The council noted that officials did not take any formal action against the violent police personnel. Proverbs 11:20-21 says, “Those of crooked heart are an abomination to the LORD, but those of blameless ways are His delight. Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.” 47 percent of Germans are religiously unaffiliated A new study found that people who identify with no religion outnumbered Protestants and Catholics in Germany for the first time last year. These religiously unaffiliated make up a shocking 47 percent of the country's population. Catholics represent 24 percent of the population, and Protestants represent 21 percent. Together, Catholics and Protestants lost over one million members last year in Germany. Meanwhile, the number of Muslims in the country increased by 80,000 last year. Supreme Court could allow publicly-funded religious charter school In the United States, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday in a case that could lead to the nation's first publicly-funded religious charter school. Oklahoma's charter school board approved funding for St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School. However, the state's attorney general is challenging the decision. Conservative justices on the high court appeared supportive of the religious charter school. Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters told CBN News what the case is all about. WALTERS: “It's about the freedom to express your religious beliefs without being penalized by the government. And it's about school choice and making sure that parents actually have that power over their kids' education. Avinger, Texas is 74th Sanctuary City for the Unborn Avinger, Texas is the 74th city in the country to become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn. The city council passed the measure in a 3-1 vote on Monday. Avinger resident and former State Representative David Simpson said, “Avinger is blessed to join cities and counties across Texas who are going as far as they can to address the tragedy of abortion, specifically abortion trafficking and the mailing of abortion-inducing drugs.” U.S. economy shrank in first quarter The U.S. economy shrank during the first quarter of this year. The Gross Domestic Product fell 0.3 percent compared to last year. This was the biggest decline since 2022. Economic growth slowed as businesses tried to stock up on imports ahead of President Donald Trump's tariffs. And federal government spending was down 5.1 percent this year. Membership drops again among Southern Baptists Membership declined in the Southern Baptist Convention for the 18th consecutive year in 2024. The U.S. denomination grew from about seven million members in the 1950s to a peak of over 16 million in the mid-2000s. Since then, it has declined to 12.7 million members last year. However, the Southern Baptist Convention baptized 250,000 people last year, a 10 percent jump from 2023.  Kevin Ezell, the president of the North American Mission Board said, “We celebrate every baptism and every new life in Christ. It's encouraging to see these numbers continue to move upward.” Capitol Hill's Bible Reading Marathon And finally, Christians gathered on Capitol Hill to read the entire Bible aloud. The Bible Reading Marathon started Saturday and finished yesterday.  For 90 continuous hours, Christians read from Genesis to Revelation in Washington, D.C. Keith Davidson led the event. He told The Christian Post, “Our goal is to bring attention back to our legislators, of course, and to get the attention back on the word of God. And then for [legislators] to remember that's where our nation's foundation is at, and also, for people who are reading, to let them publicly express their faith.” In an interview on Washington Watch with Tony Perkins, Mike Herbster, Director of Southland Christian Ministries, talked about the power of reading the Bible aloud in the capital of Louisiana, like they did on Capitol Hill. HERBSTER: “We know that the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. [Hebrews 4:12] We know that obviously, as the word of God goes forth, the Bible says it will not return void. [Isaiah 55:11] So, even in the public declaration of it out loud to our state, even though not everybody will hear all of it, we know that some will hear some of it.” Deuteronomy 31:10-11 says, “And Moses commanded them, saying: ‘At the end of every seven years … when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God … you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, May 1st, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's Tuesday, February 6th, AD 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus.  (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Vietnamese Christian given 4.5-year prison sentence The People's Court of Phu Yen in Vietnam has sentenced religious freedom activist Nay Y. Blang to four years and six months in prison for the crime of "abusing democratic freedoms" during the trial on January 26, 2024, reports Radio Free Asia.   Pastor Blang used his private home in the eastern coastal province of Phu Yen to gather for meetings, pray, and have online fellowship with some key figures of the  Central Highlands Evangelical Church of Christ, a church which is not recognized nor approved by the Communist Vietnamese government. He was falsely accused of “gathering forces, dividing the national unity bloc, inciting secession, self-rule, and establishing a separate state for ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands.” Nicaragua unfairly jailed 11 pastors The Nicaraguan government has jailed 11 pastors, and fined an American missionary for eight evangelistic campaigns conducted last year, accusing them of “organized crime.”   The government has indicted dozens of Catholic Churches as well, and removed hundreds of Evangelical groups thus far.   Mountain Gateway, a Protestant Christian group led by Britt Hancock, an American missionary, inspired 200,000 people to attend a crusade in the capital city of Managua last year. Hancock talked to Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, on Washington Watch, about the amazing openness of the Nicaraguan people to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. HANCOCK: “Every space that we got for a campaign, God filled it up with extremely desperate people. We did eight evangelism campaigns starting in February. We did the last one in November. We ended up getting the national plaza called the Plaza de Fe in Managua. We had 200,000 people the second night there. It was just a massive response.” Sadly, the Nicaraguan government has put a stop to it, falsely claiming that Mountain Gateway is guilty of money laundering and organized crime.  Mountain Gateway denied these false allegations. Indeed, the Evangelical group has diligently followed all legal requirements in the U.S. and Nicaragua that apply to non-profit and faith-based groups.  Britt Hancock himself has been indicted. In addition, six Latin American countries, including Mexico, have agreed to arrest him if he enters these countries, and will extradite him to the Nicaraguan government.  MacArthur removes Alistair Begg from conference over controversial remarks The Christian Post reports that Pastor Alistair Begg, the host of “Truth for Life” heard on 1,800 Christian radio stations, has been removed from John MacArthur's Shepherd's Conference speakers' lineup. The reason?  He made controversial comments encouraging a grandmother to attend her grandson's wedding to a transgender person. On his broadcast, Begg summarized her concerns this way. BEGG: “My grandson is about to be married to a transgender person. I don't know what to do about this, and I'm calling to ask you to tell me what to do,' which is a huge responsibility. People may not like this answer, but I asked the grandmother, ‘Does your grandson understand your belief in Jesus?' ‘Yes.' ‘Does your grandson understand that your belief in Jesus makes it such that you can't countenance, in any affirming way, the choices that he has made in life?' ‘Yes.' “I said, ‘Well, then okay, as long as he knows that, then I suggest that you do go to the ceremony, and I suggest that you buy them a gift.' ‘Oh,' she said, ‘What?' She was caught off guard. I said, ‘Well, here's the thing. Your love for them may catch them off guard, but your absence will simply reinforce the fact that they said these people are what I always thought -- judgmental, critical.' It is a fine line, isn't it?” World Magazine founder Joe Belz has died Christian Education advocate and founder of World Magazine Joel Belz died on Sunday at 82 years of age. Joel launched World Magazine in 1986, and served as Moderator for the PCA General Assembly in 2003. World News Group includes an editorial staff of about 60 reporters, editors, producers, and designers. Together, they reach an audience of 500,000 readers and listeners. Paul's words in 2 Timothy 4:7-8 seem especially appropriate as we consider the life of Joel Belz. “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” King Charles III has cancer In the providence of God, King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, reports the BBC.  Neither the type of his cancer nor the stage of his cancer has been revealed. The 75-year-old monarch was coronated 10 months ago, after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.  Catholic Church split over Pope's urging to bless homosexual relationships The Rome-based Catholic Church is experiencing a worldwide division on the Pope's encouragement of blessings for homosexual relationships, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Supporting the move are Catholics in Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and Spain. However, Catholic leadership in Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Hungary, and Poland oppose the Pope's recommendation. 30-year mortgage rate over 7% again The 30-year fixed mortgage rate popped back up over 7%, reports Mortgage News Daily. It's the first time since last December. Senate's $118 billion bipartisan aid bill for Ukraine, Israel, and border The U.S. Senate is considering a bill containing $118.2 billion of bipartisan aid for Ukraine, Israel, and the southern U.S. border, reports The New York Post. It includes $60.1 billion for Ukraine aid, $14.1 billion for Israel and $20.2 billion to handle the illegal immigration problems on the U.S. border. Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing a bill which would only fund Israel's war against Hamas, reports CNBC. Los Angeles' downpour And finally, Los Angeles, California is getting drenched. Rainfall of 6.35 inches has fallen in 24 hours from Sunday morning to Monday morning, reports KTLA. The city of Anchorage, Alaska has received over 100 inches of snow this year, reports FoxWeather. That's approaching a record for the city of 134 inches. So far, 8.3 feet of snow, and there are reports of commercial roofs collapsing throughout the city.   Plus, New Jersey and Tennessee have also seen record snowfalls this year. Jeremiah 5:23-24 offers Biblical insight. “But this people has a defiant and rebellious heart; They have revolted and departed. They do not say in their heart, ‘Let us now fear the Lord our God, Who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Sudanese paramilitary group killed a Christian On Saturday, January 20, Muslim militants from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces killed a Christian in Omdurman, Sudan, reports Morning Star News. The Rapid Support Forces, which has been fighting the Sudan Armed Forces since April 15, shot dead Hidar Al Amin at his home across the Nile from Khartoum. The Muslim militants insulted Al Amin, a member of the Sudanese Presbyterian Evangelical Church in his 30s, for being a Christian. They looted his property and left him in a pool of blood. Psalm 7:9 says, “Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just.” 50 young Canadians join March for Life in D.C. At least 50 Canadian young adults marched in the streets of Washington DC at the March for Life to call for an end to abortion, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Campaign Life Coalition helped sponsor a bus of pro-life young people to bring American strategies and motivation back to Canada. With the fall of Roe v Wade in 2022, U.S. states are now able to legislate abortion as they see fit.  Maeve Roche, the Canadian pro-life Youth Coordinator, said the key term used at this year's gathering was “the end of the beginning.”  Roche led the group on a 12-hour journey from Mississauga, Ontario, to give the young Canadians the experience of being part of a massive gathering of likeminded people.  She said, “The U.S. March in DC is the largest annual human rights demonstration in the world, so I think bringing our youth is truly a transformative experience. They get to be surrounded by tens of thousands of American pro-lifers. There's something really unique and reinvigorating about being involved in such a huge demonstration for the rights of the preborn.” Trump promises largest domestic deportation in U.S. history Appearing before a massive crowd in Las Vegas on Saturday, former president Donald Trump promised, if elected, he would implement the largest domestic deportation operation in American history, reports Christian talk show host Todd Starnes. Listen. TRUMP: “Within moments of my inauguration, we will begin the largest domestic deportation operation in America. (cheers) That's right. We have no choice because this is not sustainable. It's no wonder Joe Biden and his thugs are so desperate to stop us. They know that we are the only ones who can stop them. They know that.” Trump called on all states to send National Guard troops to the border to assist Texas in stopping the invasion of the country. Trump leads Haley before South Carolina primary Ahead of the February 24th GOP presidential primary in South Carolina, TheHill.com revealed a recent poll which shows Donald Trump has the backing of 67% of South Carolinian Republicans and Nikki Haley, who was once Governor there, only excites 27% of them. Plus, five of the six members of the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as both Republican Senators – Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, have endorsed Trump. In addition, South Carolina's Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, House Speaker, and State Treasurer have all endorsed Trump over Haley. That's why it comes as no surprise that Mick Mulvaney, Trump's former White House Chief of Staff, contended on Sky News Australia that Haley will drop out of the presidential race before the South Carolina primary. Listen. MULVANEY: “If she loses her home state by 35 points, the money is going to stop. And in our system, money is the lifeblood of politics. So, she has a real serious problem. In the folks I talk to in South Carolina, we fully expect her to drop out before the South Carolina primary. “Why? If she loses South Carolina by a huge margin, it actually hamstrings her going into 2028. It would do nothing but invigorate folks like Ron DeSantis, or other potential 2028 challengers, if Nikki Haley can't even win her home state or gets crushed in her home state. So, there's a lot more downside perhaps. “Right now the conventional wisdom, amongst those in the admittedly political class, is that she does not have a chance in her home state and, for that reason, she will be getting out before the end of February.” Ohio may require age verification to access pornography Ohio GOP State Senator Stephanie Kunze is hoping to add The Buckeye State to a growing list of states requiring age verification to access pornography, reports FaithWire.com. The proposal — Senate Bill 212 — would require visitors to pornography sites to confirm they are of legal age by mandating an identification check through an independent, third-party verification application. Job 31:1 says, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.” Son of Pawn Stars creator died of fentanyl overdose Adam Harrison, the son of “Pawn Stars” creator and star Rick Harrison, died at 39 due to a fentanyl overdose, reports KKTV.com. Rick Harrison wrote, “You will always be in my heart. I love you Adam.” Adam Harrison was the second child of Rick Harrison and his ex-wife. He was the younger brother of Corey Harrison, who stars in “Pawn Stars” with his father. The Roe of Roe v. Wade asked Supreme Court to reverse Roe And finally, on June 22, 1996, Norma McCorvey, the Roe of Roe v. Wade, asked the US Supreme Court to reverse its Roe v. Wade decision in light of the fact the case was based on fraudulent evidence. McCorvey was the original plaintiff, “Jane Doe.” The court declined at the time. But it finally did reverse the ruling in June 2022. Remarkably, she never did get an abortion.  She delivered her third child, Shelly Lynn McCorvey, on June 2, 1970. In 1994, McCorvey published her autobiography, I Am Roe. At a book signing, McCorvey was befriended by Flip Benham, an Evangelical minister and the national director of the anti-abortion organization Operation Rescue. McCorvey trusted Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized on August 8, 1995, by Flip Benham, in a Dallas, Texas, backyard swimming pool—an event that was filmed for national television. He shared her testimony on Washington Watch. Two days later, she announced that she had quit her job at an abortion mill and had become an advocate of Operation Rescue's campaign to make abortion illegal. McCORVEY: “Upon knowing God, I realized that my case, which legalized abortion on demand, was the biggest mistake of my life.” She voiced remorse for her part in the Supreme Court decision and said she had been a pawn for abortion activists. In our continued coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Ralph welcomes James Zogby, co-founder and president of the Arab American Institute and author of "Palestinians: The Invisible Victims.” Then, no-nukes activist Harvey Wasserman joins to warn us about the dangerous condition of nuclear reactors across the country, including the threat of “embrittlement” at the California reactor in Diablo Canyon. James Zogby is co-founder and president of the Arab American Institute, and he is featured frequently on national and international media as an expert on Middle East affairs. Since 1992, he has written a weekly column— “Washington Watch” —that is published in 12 countries. He is the author of several books, including Looking at Iran: The Rise and Fall of Iran in Arab Public Opinion, The Tumultuous Decade: Arab, Turkish, and Iranian Public Opinion - 2010-2019, Arab Voices: What They Are Saying to Us, and Why it Matters, and Palestinians: The Invisible Victims. There are two narratives, and we have to understand both. There's Israeli trauma and Jewish trauma, and there's Palestinian and Arab trauma. Both are real because there are two groups of humanity who each have histories. When we adopt one and ignore the other, then we end up creating the kind of torment the Palestinians have been living with.James ZogbyThis does not make Israel more secure. Taking massive amounts of Palestinian lives, evacuating them, forcing them to flee from their homes, murdering them from the air—doesn't make them more secure. At the end of the day, when the dust settles and the tears dry, you're going to have a whole lot more dead people, a whole lot more anger, a whole lot more frustration, and nothing else will change in Gaza or in the West Bank.James ZogbyHamas was a tiny religious organization which was fostered into a more powerful organization by the United States and Israel. They thought that if they built up a religious organization, it would undermine the PLO (the Palestine Liberation Organization). And once again, just as in Afghanistan, we create our own adversaries, blundering back and forth.Ralph NaderHarvey Wasserman is a journalist, author, democracy activist, and advocate for renewable energy. Mr. Wasserman is the author of Solartopia! Our Green-Powered Earth, and The People's Spiral Of U.S. History. He has written and researched atomic energy since 1973, and co-authored Killing Our Own: The Disaster of America's Experience With Atomic Energy. There's only one explanation why they're continuing to operate these two reactors and all the other reactors in the United States. And that's because the commercial reactor industry is now the infrastructure of the nuclear weapons industry. If you like nuclear power, you love nuclear weapons. They are joined at the hip, these two industries.Harvey WassermanThese two reactors are upwind of the entire United States. An accident at Diablo Canyon could—within four hours—send an apocalyptic radioactive cloud into Los Angeles, into the Central Valley where we get our fruits and vegetables for the winter, and into the Bay Area. The stakes could not be higher. And again, these are military facilities, masquerading as fighters of global warming, which is absolutely ridiculous.Harvey WassermanIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantis1. The Huffington Post reports that the State Department has imposed a censorship regime, directing high-level diplomats involved in Middle East affairs to refrain from using the following phrases: “de-escalation/ceasefire, end to violence/bloodshed, and restoring calm.” This mirrors White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre's response to a reporter's question during a recent briefing, when she deemed calls for a ceasefire by progressives in Congress “wrong…repugnant, and…disgraceful.” Rejecting this censorious framework, Rep. Jamaal Bowman tweeted that the “Official statement from [his] office [is] De-escalate. End the violence. Restore calm.”2. According to Semafor, MSNBC has “quietly” pulled their Muslim anchors from the air, preventing them from covering the rapidly escalating situation in Gaza. “The network did not air a scheduled Thursday night episode of The Mehdi Hasan Show…reversed a plan for Ayman Mohyeldin to fill in this week…for…Joy Reid's 7 p.m. show… [and] the network also plans to have Alicia Menendez fill in …for Ali Velshi.” This piece goes on to quote from anonymous MSNBC sources who “[feel] all three hosts have some of the deepest knowledge of the conflict.” NBC denies this is an intentional and coordinated move, instead claiming these shifts are merely “coincidental.” Meanwhile, MSNBC did prominently feature New York City Mayor Eric Adams making the extraordinarily dubious claim that “the DSA and others [were] carrying swastikas and calling for the extermination of Jewish people.” DSA members are now mulling a suit against the mayor for defamation, per City and State NY.3. The Intercept is out with a story about divisions within the liberal Zionist advocacy group, J Street. Per the story, J Street is supporting a congressional resolution that “pledges unconditional support to Israel's war in Gaza,” which “makes no mention of Palestinian civilians.” In response, over 1,000 former J Street staffers and representatives are urging the organization to join calls for a ceasefire. J Street's position mirrors that of many congressional progressives who have been hesitant to call for a ceasefire even as the civilian death toll continues to mount.4. Law schools have become another major venue for conflict on this issue. The Jewish Law Students Association of the City University of New York has issued a statement, expressing their “uncompromising solidarity with the Palestinian people in their righteous struggle for self-determination,” and noting that “institutions like the UN have consistently demonstrated an unwillingness and/or inability to hold Israel accountable over its blatant disregard for international law.” Similar statements have come out of Harvard, Columbia, and NYU – leading top law firm Davis Polk to rescind job offers they had extended to students from these institutions, per NBC. Some donors have also cut ties with Harvard over the statement, including the Wexner foundation, founded by former Victoria's Secret CEO and close Epstein associate Leslie Wexner.5. The Washington Post reports Venezuela and the United States have reached a breakthrough agreement in which the U.S. will ease sanctions on the country's oil industry, and in exchange the country will hold  “a competitive, internationally monitored presidential election next year.” This agreement represents a win for both nations, with the Biden administration hoping it will ease oil and gas prices, while the Maduro administration will, at long last, have the opportunity to reaffirm its legitimacy following the Trump-backed coup attempt that began in 2019.6. Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has called on the full Senate to expel Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey following his indictment on corruption charges and allegations by the Department of Justice that he was acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Fetterman's statement reads “Senator Menendez should not be a U.S. Senator. He should have been gone long ago. It is time for every one of my colleagues in the Senate to join me in expelling Senator Menendez…This is not a close call.” This from the Hill.7. Negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have broken down yet again, this time over two specific issues. The first, according to the LA Times, is the actors' demand for a 2% share of streaming revenue, or alternatively 57 cents per subscriber per year. The studios have called this an “overreach” which would “create an untenable economic burden.” The other major point of contention is AI, with the studios “continuing to demand ‘consent' on the first day of employment for use of a performer's digital replica for an entire cinematic universe (or any franchise project),” per Deadline. Meanwhile, the guild has lauded a new Senate bill – the NO FAKES Act – which would “prevent a person from producing or distributing an unauthorized AI-generated replica of an individual to perform in an audiovisual or sound recording without the consent of the individual being replicated.” SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said of the bill “A performer's voice and their appearance are all part of their unique essence, and it's not ok when those are used without their permission. Consent is key,” per Deadline.  8. Finally, the Guardian reports that Indian officials have approved a trial for sedition against renowned author Arundhati Roy concerning a 2010 speech she made on Kashmir. The article notes Reporters Without Borders has warned that “press freedom is in crisis” in India. Roy herself has been an outspoken critic of the rising tide of Hindu nationalism in India, which has earned her the ire of right-wing authoritarian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
