On this spooky season edition of Parallax Views, documentarian Joe O'Connell joins us to discuss his latest feature, RONDO AND BOB, about the parallel lives of Robert A. Specifically, the fact that Gary Kent had an encounter with Charles Manson while filming a movie on Spahn Ranch (where the Manson Family were living before the Tate/LaBianca murders) became a plot point in the aforementioned Tarantino feature. We then delve into the stories of Bob Burns and Rondo Hatton, including the similarities and differences in their lives. Burns was someone who appeared normal on the outside but was an eccentric in life and also felt unlovable. Django Nudo, Smut Pedler and Kitty Lash devote the 50th episode of Cultpix Radio to celebrate the life and career of the first true male adult star Harry Reems.Born Herbert Streicher into a Jewish Bronx family in 1947, Harry Reems pursued stage acting in New York but did stag loops to help pay for the rent. The pimply kid with the big nose had come out of the Marine Corps with a hard body, plus he could act. Kitty Lash found Bucky Beaver's Stags Loops and Shorts (1970)  quite the turn on with its authentic and sweaty humping; in Ape Over Love (1970) Harry goes full gorilla (fake suit); while Mondo Porno (1971) foreshadows obscenity troubles to come, though the "judge for yourself" of the erotic "case studies" got Kitty purring again.Deep Throat (1972) gave Harry fame and notoriety as he became the only US actor to ever be charged for appearing in a film. The case(s) dragged on until 1977 and contributed to his alcoholism. Late in life the love of a good woman saved him as he became a 'church gypsy': "I am not religious. I'm spiritual, 100 percent," he said. He also won belated recognition in the documentary "Inside Deep Throat" (2005). While converting to Christianity he kept his stage name and was happy to discuss his porn past. A Touch of Genie (1974) is what you'd get if Woody Allan had made porn in the 70s, though "Deeps Jaws" (19xx) is also genuinely sexy and funny is Deep Jaws (1976).  All beautifully restored by Vinegar Syndrome. The Love Witch (1970) sees Harry do an 'Alex Guinness' and playing multiple parts - with on-screen Batman-style f/x! Sherlick Holmes (1975) sees him playing the great detective, in More (1975) he is Detective Dick (!) Copper, while Dark Dreams (1975) is a hallucinogenic sex and horror trip.Harry was shooting films in Sweden and Germany while his legal appeal was under way in the 1970s.: Justine & Juliette (1975) and Bel Ami (1976) are literary adaptations with a veneer of cultural respectability, but primarily gorgeously shot XXX features. Strangest Harry film of all is the non-nude SS Operation Wolfcub (1983) where he's a mercenary infiltrating a neo-Nazi training camp in Swedish forests. Harry made a return in the 1980s. She feels a lot of “little tingles”, but wants “Bells Ringing! Dams Bursting! and Bombs going off!” Her roommate (Dolly Sharp ) sends her to an unconventional therapist (Harry Reems), who discovers the root of her problem. Her clitoris is deep down in her throat! The solution: a technique known as “Deep Throat.” Once cured, she devotes herself to helping others to find the sexual satisfaction that she so desired. Mooch Goes To Hollywood really destroyed us.  This is not an “alone movie” as Mike says in this episode.  So many things about this “movie” make no sense.  And the parts that do make sense are deeply problematic and misogynist.  But hey it was the early 70s right?!?  Compares to Linda Lovelace’s sad life.  Shout out to Benji and Thurston Howl III.  Not a single “joke” in this movie is funny.  The color of the film is legitimately vomit-inducing.  And Zsa Zsa Gabor gives lots of questionable advice to Mooch.  Oh, poor sad Mooch. In addition, she has provided guest vocals for Say Anything, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Fun. Alongside her sister-in-law, Charlotte Caffey, Anna worked on Lovelace: A Rock Musical in 2008.    In this episode, we discuss Anna’s career in That Dog, her music videos, the evolution of her music genre, and experimenting with her music taste. Mary Gaitskill, one of the most distinctive and celebrated contemporary American writers, spoke with Tom Lutz and Laurie Winer at a special LARB event in Silver Lake last month. Mary opened the evening with a reading from her new collection of essays, Somebody with a Little Hammer. The conversation flowed through countless subjects from there: the psychology of Mary's most celebrated characters; drugs, alcohol, and writing; Linda Lovelace; the question of cultural appropriation; Mary's scathing take on Donald Trump, and more. Also, Janet Sarbanes author of The Protester Has Been Released returns to recommend two books: The Censors by Luisa Valenzuela; and a book of poetry The Wasp Queen by Claudia Cortese.

Just nu pågår den svenska scenkonstbiennalen i Norrköping med utvalda uppsättningar från de svenska teaterscenerna, och bland de utvalda finns People respect me now, av Paula Stenström-Öhman. People respect me now med scenkonstkompaniet Lumor, är skriven och regisserad av Paula Stenström-Öhman, som kallats en av de starkaste rösterna i den svenska teatern just nu. I Teaterprogrammet berättar hon bland annat om en av anledningarna till att det dröjde ganska många år innan hon vågade satsa på att skriva och att hålla på med teater, fast hon egentligen alltid velat det. Paula Stenström-Öhman är dramatiker och regissör, född i Stockholm 1972. Hon har en fil kand i statsvetenskap, socialantropologi och idéhistoria (vid Stockholms och Göteborgs Universitet, 1991-1996). Hon har dessutom läst franska vid Sorbonne i Paris och tyska i Berlin, samt kriminologi, bland annat. I början av 90-talet arbetade hon på P3-teatern, Sveriges Radio, men hon jobbade också som analytiker inom försvarsforskningen 1997-2000 och hon har bl.a. skrivit fyra rapporter om psykologisk krigföring i informationssamhället.  Paula Stenström-Öhman är initiativtagare till scenkonstkompaniet Lumor, som varit verksamt i Stockholm sedan 2004. Sedan 2012 driver hon Lumor tillsammans med skådespelaren och regissören Oskar Thunberg. Lumor har ingen fast scen utan samarbetar alltid med andra teatrar; (Teater Tribunalen, moment:teater, Turteatern, Unga Klara, Stockholms Stadsteater/Fri Scen, Dramaten, Folkteatern Göteborg, Riksteatern m.fl.) Paula Stenström-Öhman har skrivit pjäser som People respect me now, Jag tror på dig, Anita, som spelats på Stockholms Stadsteater under året och Allt gott i världen, som skulle haft premiär på Göteborgs Stadsteater nu i maj (men som kommer få premiär senare). Hennes Materia - Jag är inte Linda Lovelace var också den utvald till biennalen, i Malmö 2015.  Paula Stenström Öhman har bland annat belönats med Henning Mankells dramatikerstipendium 2015 och Svenska Ibsenpriset 2016. Stenström Öhman jobbar ofta med dokumentär grund och använder sociologiska metoder som dramatiker. Paula Stenström Öhman valde en bit ur Liftarens guide till galaxen, som sitt klipp. Av upphovsrättsliga skäl finns inte serien att lyssna på i sin helhet.

Cosmic America heads for the "IMPORT" section of the record collection, tackling Led Zeppelin's last live show in the United States in 1975, in Inglewood, CA. This immensely long show (close to 4 hours) is arguably the last time a US audience saw Zeppelin in full fury. It's a bit of a ragged show in places, but still maintains the grandiose sound and reputation that the quartet had built for themselves. Touring in support of the recently released Physical Graffiti album, this show ended up being a fascinating live showcase for songs from both that album and from Houses of the Holy.
