Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/332 Presented By: Trxstle Sponsors: https://wetflyswing.com/sponsors Sherry Meador, Board Chair for the Upper Missouri Watershed Alliance (UMOWA), sheds light on their organization's conservation mission. Sherry helps us understand how the Upper Missouri River watershed is threatened by a silent invasion of noxious weeds that degrades the water quality, reduces native biological diversity, and negatively impact the population of many wild species like elk, deer, swans, variety of ducks, other plants, and of course our fish. We discover how we can help prevent the spread of these invasive weeds, how we can contribute to the water and streambanks restoration projects, and how we can get involved in ways we can and become more aware of the overall health of this river. There's more to it than I could describe so here's Sherry from UMOWA.org to enlighten us about it. Upper Missouri Watershed Alliance Show Notes with Sherry Meador 02:50 - Sherry and I connected through John Smigaj from Trxstle. John was on the podcast at WFS 310. 03:30 - Sherry had been involved with the noxious weed project on the Smith River. UMOWA board started in 2014 and Sherry joined 6 years ago. 04:50 - The Missouri River is the longest river in the country. It starts at 3 forks which is about 75 miles upriver from the dams of Helena down to the great falls but they're primarily focused on the primary fishing area between Holter Dam and Cascade. 08:55 - UMOWA was established by a group of guides and fly fishers. It was established to get baseline data and to get the river back to the high quality or what was considered a good level. They collect water quality samples 3 times a year. 10:10 - They will have the river's health summary report available on their website for us to see this summer 11:25 - They're done a couple of restoration projects on banks where they're trying to get the plants back there to get less erosion - read more here 11:40 - They also work on noxious weeds which are on the land but goes up to the habitat. They work with land owners by the river, trying to get them involved in this project. Noxious weeds are silent invasive and a threat to the watershed. Read more about this project here 12:30 - They educate anglers about the importance of washing their boat and waders to prevent spreading invasive species along the river. They provide boat washing stations that are open to the public and at no charge. 13:30 - The highest amount of angler days recorded was 180,000 a year 16:20 - UMOWA is an all-volunteer board. They have 8 members. John Smigaj is also one of them. 16:30 - UMOWA is in need of enough funding. They are to the point of getting the to the next level because there's so much integration they need to do with the Department of Environmental Quality and Dep. of Natural Resource. 19:00 - You can help UMOWA's mission by checking their website to understand more about their projects, spreading the word about their mission, and sign up for their newsletter. 21:40 - Sherry kind of retired as an attorney. For the past 5 years, she hasn't been working much as an attorney and into some other projects. She describes what her job looked like when she was practicing law. 26:10 - You can also support Montana Watershed Coordination Council - they are doing similar work on watersheds in Montana. UMOWA works with Pat Barnes from Trout Unlimited. Sun River Water Shed Group is a smaller watershed group but also doing some great work out there. 28:40 - They also do some river clean-up where everybody can also volunteer. They have a big event on August 20th this year at the New Brewery in Craig. There's going to be a raffle too where people can win a Ro drift boat. Upper Missouri Conclusion with Sherry Meador So there you go.. If you want to take part in UMOWA's movement, you can reach out to them via website at UMOWA.org - they always welcome new ideas and volunteers. Conservation topics may not always be the most interesting topics out there but it should be our responsibility as anglers to be aware of the things that destroy our rivers and their habitats. So if you want to enjoy these rivers at their best quality, there are many ways to contribute like spreading the word, donating, volunteering, or at the least, be a more disciplined angler - keep the fish wet, wash your boats and your waders after use. Joe Aska, the former Oakland Raider, returned to the Bay Area as New York / New Jersey defeated San Francisco 20-12 at Pacific Bell Park. Joe Aska's return to the Bay Area was an overwhelming success. The former Oakland Raider put the finishing touches on his team's victory with a 2-yard touchdown dive late in the fourth quarter as the New York/New Jersey Hitmen defeated the San Francisco Demons 20-12 in the XFL before 33,522 fans Sunday at Pacific Bell Park. Aska added a conversion run and watched as the Hitmen recorded four sacks of the Demons' Pat Barnes. The victory was the second on the road for the Hitmen (2-4), while the Demons (3-3) failed to win their second straight for the third time. San Francisco took a 6-0 lead on 63-yard punt return by former CFL standout Jimmy Cunningham with 12:31 left in the first quarter. On the next play from scrimmage, the Hitmen used a trick play to take the lead -- wide receiver Zola Davis threw a 74-yard pass to a wide open Kirby Dar Dar. The Hitmen went up 14-6 with 7:46 left in the second quarter on a 2-yard scoring pass from Richardson to running back Mike Archie. San Francisco closed to 14-12 with 11:24 remaining on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Barnes to Travis Moore, capping a 71-yard drive after the Hitmen's Leo Araguz missed a 37-yard field. San Francisco had just 112 yards of offense before the drive. New York/New Jersey put the game away on a 2-yard TD dive by Aska with 5:40 left.

To describe Noel Callow as a “human headline” is probably a little over the top but he has certainly created a few in his time. As recently as last Saturday he was stood down by the Doctor following an incident in the barrier before the first race at the Gold Coast. Noel talks of his snap decision to move to the Gold Coast two months ago after being embroiled in a couple of controversies in Melbourne. He hasn't stopped riding winners since arriving in Queensland. He talks of the support he's had from local trainers. The jockey takes us back to childhood days in Adelaide and memories of his jockey father Kevin Callow who rode with great success as Noel was growing up. The 46 year old talks of his initial apprenticeship to Pat Barnes and the long list of trainers for whom he worked over the next few years. Noel says some of those associations were brief because of his fiery nature. He remembers his retirement at age 20 and his new job in a bottle shop. Callow talks of his brief stint as a jumps jockey and a nasty fall at Victoria Park. Noel recalls his comeback at age 24 and the huge number of suspensions he incurred on the Victorian country and provincial circuit. He talks of the pristine diet he observes to this day. The jockey talks of a sequence of major wins in Tasmania. He pays tribute to his former manager Des O'Keefe and highlights his five Australian wins at Gr 1 level. Noel has spent a lot of time in Asia. He looks back on experiences in Macau, Singapore and Mauritius. The latter stint ended unhappily. He was happy to talk about a  nightmare experience in Malaysia only four years ago. Intoxication resulted in his arrest at Kuala Lumpur airport as he was attempting to leave the country illegally. Noel elaborates on a brush with stewards earlier this year when he was interrogated about Twitter comments which suggested he wasn't fit to ride a short priced favourite at Kilmore. He also gives his views on a suspension imposed when charged with not allowing a horse to run on its merits at Benalla. Noel concludes with his views on Gold Coast racing going forward.

Chris Plante on the interactivity of radio talk shows ~ "We are the original interactive media. We invented interactive." Chris Plante, Talk Show Host on WMAL radio in Our Town and elsewhere A Ockershausen: This is Our Town. This is Andy Ockershausen. Our guest today, unlike most of Our Town have been, are native but he's not a native. He's a relative newcomer, but he's not really a newcomer. He's been around. He started out on WMAL here in Our Town with a local broadcast, and now he's being heard all over America. He's on Westwood One, he's a regular on Fox News, but he's not a baby when it comes to Washington politics or holding his own in a room full of liberals. He's had a lot of experience growing up in a media family in Chicago, a family of Democrats so I hear. His mother and grandfather were on radio and television, and his stepfather is still in the news business. He's been 20 years at CNN and they've been preparing him for his daily talk show, and the most popular radio show probably on WMAL radio is The Chris Plante Show, and welcome to you, Chris Plante. Chris Plante: Thanks. Thanks for having me. A Ockershausen: Our Town. Chris Plante: Yes. A Ockershausen: You're a big part of Our Town. You, let's say, copted Our Town because not many people do what you do on radio. Chris Plante: I never wanted to be part of this town, but here I am anyway. [Laughter] I got stuck here somehow. A Ockershausen: You wanted to go back to Chicago where your family was so prominent, correct? Family Legacy - Following in Their Footsteps "On Air" Radio and Television Chris Plante: We moved around a lot truthfully. I spent most of my years, my formative years ... I'm still in my formative years, in Chicago growing up, Glenview and Winnetka on the north shore of Chicago. A Ockershausen: The gold coast. Santa Barbara, California - College Years Chris Plante: The Winnetka part certainly anyway. It's very nice. I've been here for the majority of my life now though. I fled Chicago when I was 18 years old and went to Santa Barbara where the sun shines and a whole of lot of other things. A Ockershausen: You went to school in Santa Barbara? Chris Plante: I went to school for a very long time. I never finished, but I went to school for a very long time. A Ockershausen: UC of course? Chris Plante: I went to Santa Barbara City College forever, and then I started at UC Santa Barbara. I was busy and I was married and I had a job and I lost interest, and I figured I already knew it all, so they didn't have much to teach me, so I moved on from there. That's when I went into the news business. Winnetka, Illinois - New Trier Schools A Ockershausen: In high school you were in Chicago, and then you moved west ... Chris Plante: I did. New Trier West High School and ... A Ockershausen: Wasn't Jack Benny from Winnetka, Illinois? Didn't I hear that name? Chris Plante: There are a lot of people from Winnetka. Donald Rumsfeld ... A Ockershausen: Famous name. Chris Plante: The New Trier school system, Charlton Heston and Ann Margret and Rumsfeld ... A Ockershausen: Northwestern. Chris Plante: All kinds of people. My mother went to college at Northwestern. One of my younger brothers went to college at Northwestern. Chris Plante's Mother and Grandfather "On-Air" A Ockershausen: Your mother was in the broadcast business when you were growing up, when you were in school? Chris Plante: My mother's father Pat Barnes who was not a liberal, he was a good conservative, but I didn't realize that. I didn't learn that until I started doing the radio show here at WMAL. My grandfather, my mother's father, was in the radio business from the time that he came home from World War I. He fought in the army in World War I and France, and when he came home he got into the radio business. When my mother was seven years old, she was already doing radio shows in New York, National Broadcasts. I have a recording of one of them from Christmas Day 193...
