This episode looks at On the Waterfront, the celebrated 1954 American film directed by Elia Kazan and written by Budd Schulberg. The film stars Marlon Brando as the ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman Terry Malloy. Malloy struggles to stand up to mob-affiliated union boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) after Malloy is lured into setting up a fellow dockworker whom Friendly has murdered to prevent him from testifying before the Waterfront Crime Commission about violence and corruption at the docks. The pressure on Malloy rises as he falls in love with Edie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint), the murdered dockworker's sister, and as Edie, along with local priest Father Pete Barry (Karl Malden), urge Malloy to do the right thing. Malloy ultimately testifies against Friendly and challenges Friendly's leadership at great personal risk. While the film is about a courageous fight against a corrupt power structure and injustice, it is also influenced by director Elia Kazan's own controversial decision to act as an informant against fellow directors, writers, and actors during the McCarthy-era Red Scare.Timestamps:0:00 Introduction2:20 Corruption on the docks9:18 Boxing: I could have been a contender17:07 The priest on the waterfront23:44 Testifying before waterfront crime commission32:10 Informants34:48 Elia Kazan and the House Un-American Activities Committee47:04 The film's relevance today48:39 Some people who stood up to HUAC50:40 Separating the art and the artistFurther reading:Demeri, Michelle J., “The ‘Watchdog' Agency: Fighting Organized Crime on the Waterfront in New York and New Jersey,” 38 New Eng. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
We've got another installment of Big Fat Five: a segment where I talk to drummers about the stories and records that shaped their sound. Today's guest is Lucy Ritter, a New York/New Jersey native who picked up the drums at just 9 years old and was already landing professional gigs by 14. After three years at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, she made the bold decision to leave and join her first major tour: the Broadway musical An Officer and a Gentleman. That gig opened doors, eventually leading to her being offered the drum chair for the Grammy Award-winning musical Jagged Little Pill. These days, Lucy has stepped away from the Broadway scene and taken on an exciting new role as the drummer for one of today's fastest-rising pop acts, Chappell Roan. We dig into how she landed that gig and explore the five records that have profoundly influenced her drumming style. This episode has been a long time coming, so let's dive in. I hope you enjoy my conversation with the incredibly talented Lucy Ritter... cheers!

U.S. ports from Maine to Texas face a possible shutdown due to a threatened strike by a union representing 45,000 dockworkers. The strike could result in increased prices and shortages for retailers during the holiday shopping season. The International Longshoremen's Association demands higher wages and a ban on automation at 36 U.S. ports, which handle about half of the nation's cargo. The current contract expires soon, with no negotiations since June. Major ports such as Baltimore, New Orleans, and New York/New Jersey would be affected. If the strike threatens the economy, President Biden may use the Taft-Hartley Act to seek an 80-day cooling-off period. Retailers have adapted their strategies to mitigate disruptions. The supply chain experiences ongoing pressures, including issues from Houthi attacks impacting shipping routes. The holiday shipping season has already begun, with most products available in the U.S., but retailers struggle to replenish items. Concerns arise over the timing of a potential strike, particularly for toy sellers reliant on fourth-quarter sales. The situation will continue to evolve as the strike date approaches.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
"From the Frontlines" is an ADL podcast which brings listeners to the frontline in the battle against antisemitism and hate. Since 10/7, Jewish students have been the victims of a steep rise in antisemitic incidents in their schools and universities. In some cases, Jewish students are left feeling angry, unwelcome and at times unsafe. However, Jewish day schools appear to be a safe harbor in this environment - free from the antisemitism that students face elsewhere. ADL New York/New Jersey's Campus Committee decided to do a deep dive into this topic to understand not only what Jewish students in day schools were experiencing but also how well those schools were preparing their students and graduates to face a less welcoming world. So, they hosted a webinar a few weeks ago with four day school heads in the New York/New Jersey region. Scott Richman, the host of this podcast, was honored to serve as the moderator of this important discussion. It was a rich and fascinating look at how one part of the Jewish community is handling the issue of antisemitism. It was so interesting that this edited version is now being releases as a “From the Frontlines” podcast. The guests on this podcast are: 1. Steven Freedman, Head of School at Schechter Bergen in New Jersey 2. Dr. Michael Kay, Head of School at the Leffell School in Westchester 3. Rabbi Binyamin or Bini Kraus, Principal of SAR Academy in Riverdale, and 4. Rabbi Eliezer Rubin, Head of School at Kushner Academy in New Jersey Also, ADL's Vice President for Advocacy Shira Goodman joined the conversation. This webinar took place on September 10, 2024.

Being that Savoy Brown and Chambers are on the same record label together, Quarto Valley Records, this change made sense and felt right to all three musicians. The Port of Baltimore was the 17th busiest port in the nation ranked by total tons in 2021, according to the latest data available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. It is the fifth largest on the East Coast, outsized by the ports of New York-New Jersey; Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; and Savanah, Georgia. Governor Wes Moore said last year that the port handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, in 2023. That was a record high.It was the first in terms of the volume of automobiles and light trucks (including 847,158 cars and light trucks),roll on/roll off heavy farm and construction machinery, imported sugar, and imported gypsum, the governor's office said. It was ninth overall as measured by the volume of foreign cargo handled and ninth in terms of the value of foreign cargo., according to Moore. The closure of the port could create serious supply chain disruptions for both consumer goods and industrial imports that go into goods manufactured in the U.S. It's unlikely that all of the lost capacity will be able to be absorbed by the other ports on the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. This raises the danger of additional inflation in the U.S. Inflation has fallen from the very high levels seen in the first two years of the Biden administration but remains elevated by historical standards and above levels the Feder...
Thinking about “typical” types of veganism can reveal a lot of fascinating Western stereotypes or biases around what it does and doesn't entail. And yet so many cultural cuisines from around the world are rooted in plant-based meals that have been passed down through generations to shape contemporary ethnic cuisines. So what happens when someone adopts a vegan diet and lifestyle, in terms of navigating heritage, identity, and family connection? My guest this week is popular recipe developer and creator Remy Park from Veggiekins, who is here to explore these themes and discuss her beautiful debut cookbook, Sesame, Soy, Spice: 90 Asian-ish Vegan and Gluten-free Recipes to Reconnect, Root, and Restore. Originally from New York/New Jersey area with an international upbringing, she shares vibrant plant-based recipes that take inspiration from her three cultures: Korean, Japanese, and Taiwanese, and all the countries she's lived in. Remy is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher as well as a holistic nutritionist. Her work has been featured in a variety of publications, including Shape Magazine, British Vogue, BuzzFeed, Elle Vietnam, CBS News, and ABC News. Within the cookbook, Remy's personal wellness journey is woven throughout her accessible plant-based takes on international and Asian-ish dishes. In our conversation today, we explore the traditional flavours and diets of her Asian cultures, and how the book formed a love letter to Remy's family heritage, how she navigates food as communication across American and Asian understandings of snacks and salads, and the power of language in recipe development when healing from eating disorder experiences. From the days of shows at Krome, to Birch Hill, to NJ basements, to firehouses, and all the way to the Warped Tour at Asbury Park, Greg and Scott tell it all! Scott is still playing drums today and it won't be long until their paths meet again at a show! "I try to help a client determine what they want to secure for their financial futures, when they want to retire, when they might want to go back to work [if they were at-home parents] or if they want to change their career paths or go back to school," Hazel says. Clarifying such desires can inform how one should plan for divorce and separation of assets. "It is frightening for women who may not know where to start or what to do," Hazel adds. "Qualitative answers [to the questions I pose] can take a long time to answer." Hazel and her team can help alleviate financial concerns that are often attendant to what can be an emotionally draining process. "A CDFA is the first divorce professional one should reach out to so that you can understand your options," advises Hazel. Marketplace Development Co-Founders Paul McGinn and Bob Weinberg started the company upon learning the Port Authority of New York-New Jersey wanted a private developer for the Central Terminal Building at LaGuardia. Marketplace became one of the first companies to focus on private sector businesses and practices to the airport. The ability to hand off filling and operating concessions to a third party has, for many airports, allowed them to maximize their programs, McGinn says.
Tom welcomes back Jonathan Mergott to the show. Jonathan is a Precious Metals Analyst and President of both Alchemy Financial and the Meta C. Mergott Foundation. He discusses the state of the metal markets, particularly silver and gold miners. Bearish sentiment remains in the market, with Comex inventories aligning with this sentiment and the Bulls dropping to 8% on DSI. The Fed's forward path was identified as a potential influence on gold prices. Jonathan noted that the market is showing evidence of a bear market rather than a bullish consolidation, with changing sentiment serving as proof. He observed that gold and silver are often sought after during times of economic weakness and increased volatility, as they provide protection against counterparty risk. However, he believed that silver, in particular, has the potential to catch up in price and be recognized as a monetary metal for the people. Regarding investing strategies, Jonathan suggests playing gold and silver against each other can be beneficial for those willing to take on a percentage risk. He acknowledged that investing in junior miners can be lucrative but carries a high risk of loss. On the other hand, low-risk investments such as index funds, bullion, and royalty companies may provide more consistent long-term returns. Jonathan further emphasized the importance of finding the right balance in portfolio allocations based on individual risk tolerance. A mix of low and high-risk investments was recommended. It was noted that risk tolerance may vary between individuals, and investment decisions should be based on personal circumstances and comfort levels. In terms of timing investments in junior miners, Jonathan advised observing pullbacks and rallies in the sector. If the miners are not collapsing and the 200-day moving averages are rising, it may be a good time for investment. He stresses the importance of being in a financially secure position before taking such risks. Factors other than the Fed such as inflation, debt, and general loss of confidence may be driving the recent rally. Our dachshund series continues with one of several falconers from the New York/New Jersey area that were recorded. Once I contacted Casey and told him my plans and inspiration for doing this series, he was instantly inspired to help make it happen. He helped this series come together by coordinating a lot of these episodes with other falconers in his area who also run dachshunds, so I was very happy to have his help! He's largely known for his social media presence (nj_falconry on Instagram), and has been an avid falconer and dachshund owner for a long time, and mainly flies goshawks over his dachshund Ginger. Enjoy!

Come back to the table for Part 2, as we throwback to the old “Italian American Power Hour” days, with the second half of a conversation already earning rave reviews! Pat, John, and Rossella are joined by longtime friend Marianna Gatto (Executive Director and Co-FoundRESS of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles) for a freewheeling conversation about all things #ItalianAmerican! Recorded LIVE & UNCUT at the 46th Biennial National Convention of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA), in #Pittsburgh PA, it's a conversation that only gets better in this second half! Jump back into the conversation as Marianna asks why the “New York/New Jersey image” dominates popular perceptions of Italian Americana, and whether this mass-media projection gives other Italian American communities an identity complex. We're also discussing the benefits and distinct cultures born of intermarriage between Italians and other American ethnic groups, and what benefits this might present for the future of the Italian American culture We ponder why our sense of identity is so distinct from the rest of the Italian communities living throughout the global diaspora, including the unique circumstances separating the Italian experience in Anglophonic America and those encountered by communities that formed in Latin America. As talk turns to beloved Italian traditions, we examine why the “cookie table” remains a staple of so many Italian American communities while it has nearly completely disappeared in others. And, are the cookie table and the football wedding set to make serious comebacks? It's an episode filled with the history, heritage, and hilarity you've come to love from the Italian American Podcast! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/italianamerican/support
