Ryan Droste returns to TCBCast, this time to guide us through his response to an intriguing listener email all about how history teachers like him may choose to discuss Elvis's place in the broader story of American history, and how he specifically teaches his teenage students about Elvis, Sun Records, race relations and the music industry of the 1950s. For Song of the Week, Ryan picks the beautifully sung ballad "Today Tomorrow and Forever" from one of his all-time favorite Elvis movies, Viva Las Vegas, both as a solo cut and as a duet with Ann-Margret. Then, Justin pieces together an unexpectedly heartbreaking story behind the cheerful Olivia Newton-John hit "Let Me Be There" that Elvis famously covered in his March 20, 1974, Memphis concert (released as an album itself) as well as resurfacing a few years later again on the Moody Blue album. This is a Song of the Week that you do not want to miss - it may change how you think of the song entirely. uge thanks goes out to David "Ghosty" Wills of "We Say Yeah" for his assistance with research materials for this Song of the Week. You can check out more of Ryan's history content at youtube.com/MrDrosteHistory as well as find him as usual discussing pro wrestling on Top Rope Nation. Gurdip's back!!! ...kinda? April Fools! Originally released back in May 2022 on our Patreon, Gurdip demanded to have his say about Terry Stafford and his famous cover of "Suspicion," so Justin obliged and they sat down not just with the single, but Terry's full 1964 album. Released on the Crusader Records label to capitalize on Stafford's surprise Top 5 success with his hit recording of the same name, "Suspicion" featured an array of Elvis-likes from original Brill Building songwriters behind some of Elvis's early '60s material, including Doc Pomus, Ben Weisman, Fred Wise, and Sid Wayne. As you'll hear, evidence strongly suggests that many, if not all, of the songs included were pitched to Elvis for consideration, with several even getting recorded. Justin also guides us a little further past the album to Stafford's post-Suspicion career, including later singles and more significantly as a songwriter himself, with such hits as Buck Owens' "Big in Vegas" and George Strait's "Amarillo by Morning." Joe W. Specht's short-but-thorough biography "The Life and Music of Terry Stafford" was immensely helpful to finding more information on Stafford's story. It's available as of this posting through Texas State University's website here: https://digital.library.txstate.edu/handle/10877/7519 No foolin' - This "TCBCast Jukebox" is one of our all-time favorites we've done. If you enjoyed this, we've also done bonus episodes about Elvis's musical contemporaries such as Ann-Margret, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, The Platters, Dean Martin, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, and many more, with more on the way as exclusive bonus content. Please consider joining up over at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy. While we're out this week, Justin and Bec will be back next week with a discussion about "G.I. Blues" - revisiting it, its soundtrack and recording sessions for the first time since literally our third-ever episode of TCBCast!

It received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office failure grossing only $29 million against its $25 million budget. The film was Reitman's final directorial effort and Jim Brown's final acting role before their deaths in 2022 and 2023 respectively.Any Given Sunday is a 1999 American sports drama film directed by Oliver Stone depicting a fictional professional American football team. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 83 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Awards Connection writer Andrew Carden to discuss the next film in their Mike Nichols series, Carnal Knowledge (1971). After starting off on a hot streak with his first two films, Mike Nichols hit a bit of bad luck for his third film, with an adaptation of the renowned novel Catch-22. Considering it was released after the smash hit that was Robert Altman's M*A*S*H, audiences didn't respond to the film at all, but the following year, audience did discuss Nichols' fourth film, the controversial Carnal Knowledge. Focusing on the troubled relationship between two men who meet in college, become friends, and their journey through the sexual relationships they have and share along the way. Might sound like a simple summary but the film is far thornier with the way these men and their relationship with each other and others evolve as the film plays out; making for a fascinating film. Ryan, Jay, and Andrew break down their thoughts on the film, Nicholson's unhinged performance, the idea of an unlikeable protagonist, Ann-Margret's vulnerable work, the film's battle with censorship, the final, controversial scene of the movie, and more. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h45m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Mike Nichols with a review of his next film, Silkwood. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Kids. What is wrong with kids these days? They're not perfect like we were. It's musicals month and we've arrived at a 60s musical and the only musical Bob already saw prior to this month. This musical, inspired by Elvis getting drafted into the army, is a pop culture spoof and a launchpad for a young Ann-Margret who mesmerizes in this 1963 George Sidney adaptation of “BYE BYE BIRDIE”. A popular singer gets to kiss a small tawn girl in small town Ohio and if this works out then 5 or 6 people could be set for life! It's an extensive cast that also stars Dick Van Dyke as a speed dealer, Janet Leigh as a withered old marm, Bobby Rydell who is being cucked by a teen idol despite being one in real life, Paul Lynde as the perfect father and Maureen Stapleton as the perfect mother. It also stars Ed Sullivan as himself. A crafty musical comedy that rightly deserves its place as one of the great teen movies and the best movie ever featuring a turtle high on speed. JFK would be dead later this same year. Just thought I'd mention that. In this episode of the Broadway Drumming 101 podcast, legendary drummer Cubby O'Brien shares a memorable story about subbing out of his first Broadway show and an unexpected encounter with Nathan Lane. When a stage manager informed Cubby that Nathan Lane wanted to see him in his dressing room, Cubby was slightly surprised. After finding his way upstairs, Nathan greeted him with a joking, "You can never leave again," followed by laughter and reassurance that everything was fine after a few nights of adjustment.Cubby explores the real challenge of subbing as a drummer on Broadway. He explains how Nathan Lane got used to his playing style and how every drummer strikes the drum differently; even the slightest variation can be noticeable. Cubby calls it a “thankless job,” where subs must maintain the established feel of the show while replicating the chairholder's unique sound as closely as possible.Throughout the episode, Cubby offers insights from his extensive experience with shows like Hair, The Producers, and The Carpenters' Tour. He underscores the importance of adaptability, consistency, and precision for subs trying to blend seamlessly. This episode is packed with wisdom!Carl "Cubby" O'Brien, born July 14, 1946, in Sun Valley, California, is an accomplished American drummer and former child actor, best known as one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club (1955–1958). Discovered by Disney talent scouts at a Screen Actors Guild benefit in 1954, Cubby became the youngest male to audition for the show, securing his spot after a simple yet memorable rendition of "Happy Birthday." After his time with Disney, Cubby pursued his true passion for drumming, performing with bands around Los Angeles, including a two-year stint with Spike Jones, which opened doors to major acts. He went on to work with legendary artists such as Ann-Margret, Shirley MacLaine, and Diana Ross, and spent ten years touring with The Carpenters after meeting them on The Carol Burnett Show.Cubby's prolific career extends to Broadway and television, with notable performances in productions such as West Side Story, Hair, The Producers, and Gypsy. He has also lent his drumming talents to movie soundtracks, including Grease, Change of Habit, and Gypsy. In addition to his extensive stage and screen credits, Cubby has played drums for Siegfried and Roy in Las Vegas and continues to perform in the Broadway production of Chicago. Throughout his career, he has worked with various stars, from Bernadette Peters to Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gorme, and remains a respected figure in the music industry. In this podcast episode, I sit down with the legendary Cubby O'Brien, whom I had the pleasure of meeting earlier this year on a Broadway cruise where I was performing with several acts, and he was with the iconic Bernadette Peters. Cubby, best known for his time on The Mickey Mouse Club and touring with The Carpenters, has had a remarkable career on Broadway, drumming for shows like Annie Get Your Gun, The Producers, and Beauty and the Beast. In this chat, we dive into his incredible experiences, including a memorable moment when Buddy Rich told Karen Carpenter she was his favorite drummer! Please tune in to hear it all, and remember to subscribe and share!Carl "Cubby" O'Brien, born July 14, 1946, in Sun Valley, California, is an accomplished American drummer and former child actor, best known as one of the original Mouseketeers on The Mickey Mouse Club (1955–1958). In this episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I had the chance to talk with one of the most respected drummers in the business, Cubby O'Brien. We chatted about the process of picking subs for Broadway gigs—a topic that's critical for anyone looking to make it in the scene. Cubby breaks down what he looks for in a sub: dependability, solid playing, and being an established player in New York. He shouts out legends like Ray Marchica and Larry Lelli, both of whom he trusted to step into the drum chair without a second thought. Cubby talks about how it's not just about finding someone who can play the part—it's about finding someone who gets the job done under pressure.Broadway Drumming 101 is a reader-supported publication. This week, we celebrate Revolutions Per Movie's 1 year anniversary with filmmaker and actor OWEN KLINE (A24's Funny Pages), who chose one of the most anticipated music films to discuss on the podcast, THE WHO'S TOMMY. We discuss the chicken/egg of the movie vs. the lp, the baked bean mythology, Ken Russell's pre-filmmaking history from being a ballet dancer to dodging the war, Russell's early BBC Composer films, Richard Lester and Lindsay Anderson, Robert Crumb and Fantagraphics Books, being a cultural dinosaur, the concept of selling out, the precision of the film that betrays its midnight movie status, Who's Next, how the Tommy LP kept The Who from breaking up, the ARP synth, the use of repetition in both the LP and the movie, transgressive music, how and why Townshend kept changing the shape of the story of Tommy, the aborted projects LIFEHOUSE & THE ANGELS that used elements to make the film Tommy, could we pick up the concept album plot before seeing the movie (and even after seeing it!), Ann-Margret's Oscar-nominated performance, the amount of sweat that appears on actors in the film, the surprising debut acting turn of Roger Daltrey, the UK white boy blues movement, Russell's choice of having the actor sing, including Jack Nicholson's strange turn, Keith Moon's approach to Uncle Ernie, Chris's concept double album Colonel Jeffrey Pumpernickel, Tina Turner's incredible performance as the acid queen and how Mick Jagger was in talks to do the role instead, does Elton John and Tina turner steal the film, the strange final 1/3 of the film, Dauhgltrey's perfect cartwheels, acting through song and so much more!We are also joined by special guest Barry Winch, who starred in TOMMY as ‘Young Tommy'!!! He illuminates us both about being a child on the set of the strange film, what it was like working with Ken Russell, Ann-Margret & Oliver Reed, how they got honest performances out of him as a child actor, how The Who protested going to the premiere unless he was invited (since he was underage), how Ken Russell himself accidentally cast him, his family's acting history, playing hide and seek with Oliver Reed, what it felt like being on the set of that movie, what the Tommy props from the film have been auctioned at, why he wasn't allowed to wander around the set, his favorite memories and some moments of being afraid as well. All this and more as we celebrate the one year anniversary of REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE!!!OWEN KLINE:https://a24films.com/films/funny-pagesREVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Can the frigit Minnesota setting nip at the hearts of viewers? Crack a cold Schmidt's and come warm up in the ice shanty with the Brains.
This relationship didn't happen before Priscilla—or after. No, it happened smack dab in the middle. Ann-Margret was Elvis's “other woman” that 2021's Elvis movie failed to mention. But she wasn't just the other woman. Ann-Margret was the “Queen of Las Vegas,” and the “Female Elvis,” the star of acclaimed movies like Bye-Bye Birdie and Carnal Knowledge. She said her and Elvis were “soulmates” and “kindred spirits,” and Elvis seemingly never moved on from their relationship. What did Ann-Margret know about Priscilla? Who really was the love of Elvis' life? And we ask the age-old question…can you really love two people at the same time? ***** This is a teaser for a bonus episode. Brandon and Larry discuss this fun and vibrant adaptation of the classis Broadway musical. The two talk the differences between the film and stage versions. Much of the conversation is spent lauding the star-making performance of Ann-Margret. We'll also pay tribute to the talents of Dick Van Dyke. Janet Leigh, Paul Lynde and director George Sidney.
Jeff Schimmel began his Writing/Producing career in the 1980s while attending law school in Los Angeles. When not studying for the bar exam, Jeff wrote and sold his original Cold War spy thriller, Archangel, to Phoenix Entertainment Group. Soon after, Jeff was chosen by comedy legend Rodney Dangerfield and award-winning Writer/Director Harold Ramis to co-write the full-length Warner Brothers animated film, Rover Dangerfield. This led to a sports comedy screenplay assignment from Orion Pictures and 20th Century Fox, and Jeff's first TV writing job as Story Editor on ABC's top ten sitcoms, Full House.Next, Jeff co-wrote and produced The Schimmel Papers, a series of several short films for Fox TV's Sunday Comics, then went on to write for the groundbreaking, Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy series, In Living Color, worked as Story Editor on the WB network's first-ever sitcom, then served as Writer and Producer on Laughing With The Presidents, NBC TV's final comedy special starring Bob Hope, with appearances by Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton, actors Tom Selleck, Don Johnson, Tony Danza, Ann-Margret, Naomi Judd, and many more.In 2016, Jeff took over as Executive Producer of Fuse network's music intensive Skee TV series, working with hip hop artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyler the Creator, Post Malone, and T.I. Also in the rap world, Jeff was credited as a producer on three multi-platinum selling CDs by Busta Rhymes. In 2017, Jeff's book, “Maximum Screenwriting,” was released and has earned Amazon's five-star rating. Jeff has appeared as a guest lecturer at L.A.'s famed Screenwriting Expo, is a popular speaker at prestigious universities and film schools, and has worked closely with the Writers Guild of America to protect the best interests of writers.25 COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND STRAIGHT ANSWERSThe entertainment industry is the toughest business around. To achieve success as a professional screenwriter, you will need every advantage you can get. A writer who faces readers, agents, producers, and creative executives are no different than a soldier going into combat. To have the best chance of survival, both would be wise to bring every weapon they can carry into the fight. This book is ammunition for the battles every screenwriter will face as it teaches: How to create a bulletproof outline, How to build and breathe life into compelling characters, How to defeat crippling procrastination, How to avoid being ripped off, and How to deal with a myriad of situations other books never mention. The one thing this book will not do is tell you what the proper margins are for a screenplay, where to place a parenthetical in dialogue or what is supposed to happen on page 30. There are dozens of books and free online lectures for that. Maximum Screenwriting was written for one reason only: to teach you what other books don't and to tell you what other writers won't.Enjoy my conversation with Jeff Schimmel. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2664729/advertisement

Ann-Margret is your classic triple threat: she can sing, she can dance and she can act. Oh yeah, and you can't forget the fact that she's legendarily beautiful. But perhaps what's most remarkable about Ann-Margret is the fact that she's been a star for 60 years. Ann-Margret was discovered by George Burns when she was still a teenager. He put her in his Vegas act. That got her a record deal. Then a movie deal. And the rest is history. She's since appeared in over 50 films and released over a dozen albums. And the accolades continue. She's won five Golden Globe awards, a screen actors guild award and six Emmys! Back in April, she released a new album called Born To Be Wild. It's her first project in over a decade. On Bullseye, we stopped by Ann-Margret's beautiful home to chat about her album Born To Be Wild. We also get into a very vulnerable moment in her life: the loss of her husband Robert Smith and their 50 years of marriage.
