Are novelty records cool? Probably not, but this week's guest, musician/songwriter Nick County, makes the case that the best ones are artistically valid, culturally relevant and - most importantly - a hoot! We embraced the weird and dove head-first into Dr. Demento's 20th Anniversary Collection. Caution: freaks ahead... The great Tom Lehrer has a new album! Put out by Needlejuice records and mixed by our guest, Jeff Morris, from the original reel-to-reel tapes, it's a compilation of all of Tom's songs recorded with an orchestra, now available in stereo for the first time. This gives us a wonderful excuse to revisit Tom's unusual career, his transition from touring artist to UC-Santa Cruz math instructor, and some of our favorite songs, like Silent E, which we include in the podcast. Jeff tells the story of how he met Tom when Jeff was writing a paper on satire in high school and their subsequent friendship and the discovery of the orchestral tapes in Tom's basement. We also talk about Tom's recent attempt to share his music by placing all his songs in the public domain, which shows just what an extraordinary person he is. Merry Christmas to you all, and, as Tom would say, hail Santa and his reindeer, but don't stand underneath when they fly by. Emmy-winning writer Jeff Greenstein (Friends, Will & Grace, Parenthood, Desperate Housewives) knows a thing or two about comedy. So it's no surprise that a record that got HIM high as a young impressionable adolescent ALSO made him laugh. A lot. The songs on 'More of Tom Lehrer' by singer-songwriter/satirist Tom Lehrer combine wickedly-clever wordplay with an absurdist - at times dark - sense of humor that clearly influenced Jeff's future work. "And we will all go together when we go..." Songs featured in this episode: I'll Be There For You (Theme from 'Friends') - The Rembrandts; Sail Away - Randy Newman; Country Song (Pandering) - Bo Burnham; Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, Bright College Days, National Brotherhood Week - Tom Lehrer; Stein Song - Rudy Vallee; Homeward Bound - Tufts Beelzebubs; Land Of The Glass Pinecones - Human Sexual Response; A Christmas Carol - Tom Lehrer; O Tannenbaum - Vince Guaraldi Trio; The Elements - Tom Lehrer; I Am The Very Model Of A Modern Major General - Gilbert & Sullivan; Oedipus Rex, In Old Mexico, Clementine - Tom Lehrer; Clementine - Jan & Dean; It Makes a Fellow Proud to Be a Soldier, She's My Girl - Tom Lehrer; Rockaway Beach - Ramones; Crazy - R.E.M.; Venus In Furs - The Velvet Underground; The Masochism Tango - Tom Lehrer; Kiss Of Fire - Caterina Valente; We Will All Go Together When We Go - Tom Lehrer; My Bologna - Weird Al Yankovic; Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life - Eric Idle; We Will All Go Together When We Go - Red Leicester Choir
Tom Lehrer was an American songwriter and satirist whose songs have been making audiences laugh for decades. His dark humor and sharp wit made people think about some heavy issues of the day, from war to politics. Let's learn about Tom Lehrer on Enjoy Stuff - A TechnoRetro Podcast If you listened to the Dr. Demento show in the 80's, you probably heard some of the comedy stylings of Tom Lehrer. His clever song parodies paved the way for greats such as Weird Al Yankovic. Jay and Shua take a look at his work and why we love it. News -Frogger Game Show Trailer Released by Peacock -Get ready to get down to 3 tunes inspired by Lucky's magical charms. -Starbucks PSL Makes Its Earliest Return Ever -Charlie Watts: Rolling Stones drummer dies at 80 What we're Enjoying Shua checked out the dark, thought provoking, Arthurian legend The Green Knight. If you dig thinking about the movies you watch and tons of symbolism you might want to check it out. Jay just finished Andy Weir's “Project Hail Mary” book. Another fun one that he has been enjoying. Enjoy Music Tom Lehrer has an educational background in math, but he is best known for his songs he performed in the 50's and 60's. It was a time in history that our culture really needed some humor to help us understand and cope with some pretty nasty stuff happening in the world. Even the threat of World War III wasn't off limits to Lehrer's wit. Plus, he accessed the deepest, darkest, depths of his imagination by writing about some truly disturbing topics like Poisoning Pigeons in the Park. He once said, "If, after hearing my songs, just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." He even wrote songs that helped educate a generation of Electric Company viewers. We learned important rules like Silent-e, L-Y, and O-U (The Hound Song). Let's check out Tom Lehrer. Ariane Sherine, musical comedy performer, journalist and TV scriptwriter joins critic Kate Copstick and blogger John Fleming in London’s bustling Mama Biashara emporium They disagree about sex on a first date, discuss hairy men, why sex is like a cup of coffee and why Charlie Brooker is kind. Plus the joys of meeting famous comics on The Guardian’s dating site, Ariane’s upcoming novel, the Simon Singh-along with Tim Minchin and Ariane’s “Love Song For Jeremy Corbyn”. Then... fear of a bad review by Steve Bennett on the Chortle comedy website; why Ariane is not playing the Edinburgh Fringe this year but is turning to online music videos, the cost of Jeremy Corbyn lookalikes and Ariane’s topless video with John. The lyrics were just clever, clever, clever, smart stuff.” And the two of them sing Tom Lehrer’s “Poisoning Pigeons in The Park” etc together, then swap nervous breakdown and prescription drug stories and talk about the benefits of self-harming: “I genuinely think,” says Copstick, “self-harming, up to a point, is a great coping mechanism.” http://www.grouchyclub.co.uk You can also download this audio podcast from iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/grouchy-clubs-mostly-about/id977279883 John Fleming posts occasional blogs at: http://blog.thejohnfleming.com
