From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above.Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.A rarely staged musical comedyChristine Sweet, a retired classical music radio host in St. Paul, is looking forward to seeing Minneapolis Musical Theatre's production of "Grumpy Old Men," a musical adaptation of the 1993 romcom set in Wabasha. The musical runs April 3–19 at the Conn Theater in Minneapolis.Christine says: MMT brings us new and rarely performed musicals, digging deep to find forgotten gems and often presenting the local premieres of chosen works, which is the case with this production of “Grumpy Old Men.” After a hard winter, we could use some belly laughs at the foibles of two lifelong rivals vying through snow and ice-fishing for the attention of their attractive new neighbor.MMT draws on the Twin Cities' wealth of vocal, instrumental and theatrical talent, and I can't wait to hear what they do with the soundtrack, which was commercially recorded just two years ago.”— Christine SweetA poetic look at a scientific pioneerCarolyn Pool, a writer and performer in St. Paul, recommends seeing “Ada Lovelace: Bride of Science,” a new play staged by nimbus theatre. Daughter of the famed poet Lord Byron, Lovelace (1815-1852) was a mathematical genius who invented the Analytical Engine, a prototype for early computers. Carolyn says this play offers a great way to introduce children to an important historical figure in STEM. This show has sliding scale tickets. It runs April 4–19 at The Crane Theater in northeast Minneapolis. The play is written by Twin Cities performer Nissa Nordland, who is also the head of the Twin Cities Horror Fest. Carolyn says: [Nordlund] has a very, very big interest in both science and beauty and poetry. And so this is going to be, yes, a play about a woman in science, and it's going to be poetic, full of beautiful language and stellar performances.— Carolyn PoolContinuing a quiltmaker's legacyBrie Taralson owns Lykke Books, across the street from the Grand Center for Arts and Culture in New Ulm. She wants people to see the beautiful quiltwork on display in the Grand's current exhibition, “Picking Up the Piecework: A Legacy of Creativity Through the Lens of Mary Hartten.” After Hartten, an avid quilter, died, her family gave her fabric and unfinished piecework to be sold to benefit The Grand. This exhibit features quilts that have been made — in a variety of styles — using those pieces, thus continuing Hartten's legacy. The exhibit runs through April 24.On Sat. April 10 at 5 p.m., Mary's son Randy Hartten will give a presentation about “An Unfinished Project,” a printed book of 54 of Mary's quilt squares. Brie describes that project.Brie says: What's really neat is you can actually see the “finished side” on one and flip the book over and see exactly how precise she was and how complicated the stitching was on the other side. And so you get a true behind-the-scenes look at how much math and geometry and and precision that was needed to do this well. [Mary's children] had this bound, and the the book itself is a piece of art. It's quite literally stitched together of her quilt pieces.— Brie Taralson

666. Kathleen Kass Byrd, part 1, joins us to discuss her book on the history of Natchitoches. "Kathleen M. Byrd's Natchitoches, Louisiana, 1803–1840 is an examination of one French Creole community as it transitioned from a fur-trading and agricultural settlement under the control of Spain to a critical American outpost on the Spanish/American frontier and finally to a commercial hub and jumping-off point for those heading west. Byrd focuses on historic events in the area and the long-term French Creole residents as they adapted to the American presence. She also examines the effect of the arrival of the Americans, with their Indian trading house and Indian agency, on Native groups and considers how members of the enslaved population took advantage of opportunities for escape presented by a new international border. Byrd shows how the arrival of Americans forever changed Natchitoches, transforming it from a sleepy frontier settlement into a regional commercial center and staging point for pioneers heading into Texas" (LSU Pr.). Kathleen M. Byrd (nicknamed Kass) is a distinguished anthropologist, archaeologist, and historian specializing in the history and prehistory of Louisiana, particularly the Natchitoches region. A native of Connecticut, she earned her B.A. from Marquette University, an M.A. from LSU (focusing on coastal subsistence patterns), and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She served as Louisiana's state archaeologist for 15 years before joining Northwestern State University (NSU) in Natchitoches in 1994, where she later became director of the School of Social Sciences for 12 years until her retirement. Written for locals, by locals, and starring locals, This Blows is Key West's newest annual show that mashes up stand-up, sketch comedy, and live music into one big, ridiculous, heartfelt island experience. Jessica pulls back the curtain on how the show came to life, what it's really like building a hometown production from scratch, and why Key West is the perfect place for a comedy musical that doesn't take itself too seriously. They talk concept, casting, collaboration, and the beautiful chaos of putting real people (you might recognize) on stage at the Key West Theater. ABOUT SYDNEY KANE AND WIFE MATERIALThe talented NYC-based comedian and singer-songwriter Sydney Kane has performed everywhere from off-off-off-barely-Broadway stages to the glamorous 9x16 iPhone screen, and beyond. She built a loyal following on social media with her deeply insightful takes on dating, so sharp and relatable that even straight men are taking notes. Kane will be filming her musical comedy variety show Wife Material live at The Green Room 42 in New York City on June 18. With musical direction by David Dabbon (arranger for Oh, Mary!, Cat Cohen, Las Culturistas Culture Awards, SNL 50) and direction by Andrew Mullins. The special touches on super relatable topics about the endless, exhausting loop of modern dating. While today's society seems to enjoy and glorify pushing women back to the 1950s, Kane pulls inspiration from comedic greats like Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, and more to turn and upend her perfectly set dinner table. Through original songs, sketch comedy, and unfiltered storytelling, Sydney takes you on a PG-13 (leaning R) rated journey through the most universal experience there is: falling in love. And then falling out. And then falling back in. And then regretting it. And then telling your friends you're done. And then you get over it. And then you meet someone new. And then you fall in love. Does this ever end? You'll have to see the show to find out! He's won multiple awards including the Raw Comedy National Runner Up in 2012, multiple AWGIE Awards for Best Comedy Writing, and an APA Award for Best Entertainment Podcast. Cam has appeared on TV screens in Bump, Utopia, WTFAQ, Question Everything, At Home Alone Together, and his own comedy special on ABC's Comedy Next Gen in 2018. As a sought-after comedy writer, Cam has served multiple seasons on Gruen, Take 5, We Interrupt This Broadcast, At Home Alone Together, Win The Week and Channel Seven's Celebrity Roasts. As head comedy writer on The Feed he's won multiple AWG awards. Whilst all of this is impressive, Cameron's passion is creating his own comedy projects, from his beloved cult sketch series with Becky Lucas, The Becky & Cam Show, to the hit YouTube/Screen Australia series Finding Yeezus and the podcasts Finding Drago and Finding Desperado. The Finding series has amassed an audience of over 1.5 million around the globe, and has been described by The Australian as “tremendously bonkers” and by The AV Club as “brilliantly silly”. He is currently touring his new show “Broken Records” across Australia. Cameron James has been in just about every kind of band you can imagine from reggae to punk to rock and more making Broken Records the perfect show for the comic to bust his rock n roll and comedy chops on. Get ready to dig into Cam's record crate of his life, pinballing from hilariously true stories to cutting cultural commentary to full-blown pop songs. Following a sell-out 2024 season, Melbourne International Comedy Festival Most Outstanding Show nominee, Sydney Comedy Festival Director's Choice winner and Bad Boy of Musical Comedy* (*self-proclaimed), Cameron James is back with his biggest rock ‘n' roll show yet. Cam will tour Broken Records across Australia with songs and stories sure to crack audiences up. We chat about his love of Mike Myers, being stabbed and giving up being in a band, full circle moment with music, embracing his voice and authenticity, new shows coming up, collaborating buddies and thriving together, working with Ben Lee, getting a pilot made, rejection, trying new things plus plenty more!
