Are novelty records cool? Probably not, but this week's guest, musician/songwriter Nick County, makes the case that the best ones are artistically valid, culturally relevant and - most importantly - a hoot! We embraced the weird and dove head-first into Dr. Demento's 20th Anniversary Collection. Caution: freaks ahead... An unconventional app is bringing Kiwis together through a love of fish heads. Free Fish Heads allows fishers to connect with seafood lovers who are after often-discarded fish parts - including fish heads - for cooking purposes. The app is the brainchild of TV fishing personality Matt Watson, who says there's no excuse for discarding perfectly good food. "It's about making connections with people - because people that often have the disposable income to be able to have a boat and go fishing don't often mix with people who eat fish heads. It's not a conscious thing, it's just different sub-sections of our society." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In Reelfoot Lake, a backwoods bayou of the American South, lives an outcast freak – a lonely swamp dweller whose fishy features have earned him a strange moniker. Mystery and local superstition surround him, but when the Baxter brothers seek their revenge will they uncover the truth about the one they call…”Fish Head”. This original recording is an audio presentation (with sound effects and music) by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “Fish Head” by Irvin S. Cobb (1913). You can hear me discuss this story by becoming a channel member and listening to a future episode of The EnCrypted Postmortem. (Honest! Next one coming up soon!) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7JYpOrSDoCfvPbjBn6DZGIXDlK-eOzpR). NOTE ABOUT PRONUNCIATION OF "SLOUGH" A number of helpful people have gotten in touch to tell me I should have pronounced "slough" as "slew" as that is how it is pronounced in that part of the world. However, it was not a word known to me (not used much in British English, at least not in the sense meant in this story) so I referred to Merriam-Webster dictionary which suggested US speakers (except in New England) would pronounce the word "slew" or "sloo", but added that British English speakers would usually say "slau" (like the English town) even if they were refererring to an American swamp. As a British English speaker myself that was what I went with. As I'm rather tired of people assuming I don't do any research when I record these damn stories, I thought I'd set the record straight. No need for anyone else to tell me it should be "slew". Any issues, take it up with the dictionary people.

On this week's episode the Bayer siblings are thrilled to welcome siblings Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar!! You might know them as bestselling authors or have seen Amber on The Amber Ruffin Show, but did you know that as kids they used to roll down a hill in a barrel? We talk about that adventure plus all the other dangerous things we did as kids like sliding down stairs on a pillow or the time Lacey got stuck in the laundry chute. Plus, Vanessa recalls her Chicago days of being lovingly bullied while understudying in Amber's Second City show, and the Bayer's are captivated to hear about all of the delicious treats that Amber and Lacey's dad used to bring home from his job at Duncan Hines (incidentally, that's also where the aforementioned barrel came from.) The fun continues as Amber and Lacey perform some of the original music they created as kids, and Vanessa does the same with a song she wrote with her cousin and recently learned was a Whodini rip-off. Finally, in a CHANGE.ORG first, Amber and Vanessa realize they actually KNOW the author of one of the petitions! AND Lacey and Amber think they might know the school that is part of another petition! But despite these ties, in the end everyone agrees that their favorite petition is the one demanding that Amber to host the Oscars. So check out this incredible sibling-filled episode of HDWGW and be sure to also listen to Amber and Lacey on their podcast "The Amber & Lacey, Lacey & Amber Show"!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Bill Mumy, Renowned Actor, Musician, Writer and Author, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy, A Memoir” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Bill Mumy, is an actor, musician and writer, who's been entertaining the world since he was 5 years old. In fact, he was by far the most successful, recognizable and popular child star in the 60's and 70's. He appeared in dozens of TV shows including “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, “Bewitched”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, “The Fugitive”, and many more. But he's best remembered for playing “Will Robinson” on the iconic, classic TV series, “Lost in Space”, which holds a permanent place in pop culture history. He starred in 4 Disney movies and appeared in many other films including “A Child is Waiting”, “Dear Brigitte”, “Palm Springs Weekend”, and “Bless the Beasts & Children”. In fact – and this is really jaw-dropping – this man worked with more legendary superstars by the time he hit puberty, than most A-list actors ever do in their entire lives. He worked with everyone from Red Skelton, Loretta Young, Franchot Tone, June Allyson, to Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Jackie Gleason – and yes, even Brigitte Bardot. And get this: in a highly publicized interview, Jimmy Stewart said that our guest was the ONLY child actor he'd EVER worked with who was worth a damn. What a compliment! As an adult, he's appeared in many movies like “Papillon”, “Sunshine”, “The Twilight Zone movie”, “Double Trouble”, “Hard to Hold”, and the 1st “Captain America” feature film. And on TV, he's appeared in “The Rockford Files”, “Star Trek: Deep Space 9”, “The Adventures of Superboy”, ”Matlock”, “Diagnosis Murder”, and he played “Lennier” for 5 seasons on “Babylon 5”. And of course, EVERY “Lost in Space” fan was OVERJOYED to see him appear as “the real Dr. Smith” in the 2018 Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space”. Throughout his life, he's been a highly accomplished and popular musician, both as a solo artist AND as a member of several bands, including “Redwood”, “The Generators”, “Action Skulls” and “Barnes & Barnes”, whose song, “Fish Heads” became a worldwide hit. He's released over a dozen albums. And he got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition. Besides being an actor and musician, he's had a prolific voiceover career, and he narrated over 50 episodes of A & E Biography. He was even the voice of Farmers Insurance for 11 years. He's created and written numerous comic books, screenplays and novels. And for 4 years, he produced, wrote and hosted his own weekly radio show. And now, FINALLY, he's released his highly anticipated memoir entitled, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy: A Memoir”, which gives us a very insightful, honest and entertaining look not only at his multi-faceted career, but more importantly, we get to know him as a son, grandson, husband, father, grandfather and human being. The Flopcast Book Club is finally back in session, and we're discussing Bill Mumy's new memoir Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy. Best known for Lost in Space and The Twilight Zone, Bill was one of the busiest child actors of the 1960s, and has stayed busy with television, film, and music projects ever since. We cover Bill's Disney movies co-starring seals and raccoons; his experiences on The Munsters and Bewitched; his adventures with Shaun Cassidy, Rick Springfield, and "Weird Al" Yankovic; his comic book band Seduction of the Innocent; his new supergroup Action Skulls; and most importantly, his Pez collection. And don't forget Bill's other band Barnes & Barnes, whose classic novelty song "Fish Heads" somehow led to a year's supply of iced coffee for Kornflake. (RIP Robert Haimer, the other half of Barnes & Barnes, and thanks for the decades of weird music. Yeah.) So stay out of the cornfield and check out the book. When it comes to food and the entrepreneurial skills needed to succeed, there is a name that is synonymous in Shropshire. Ryan King. Having heard his name mentioned before, we have never been able to get an interview together, that is until now, thanks to help from our good friend Liam Tinsley. Liam was instrumental in putting this together. Ryan is of a unique Shrewsbury pedigree and has a story that offers a different perspective to business that we haven't heard before. The ex owner of The Smoke Stop, Ryan became a victim of his own success. The popularity of his restaurant became an almost 24hr job. This caused Ryan to move to Ibiza and find a job where he was told what to do and grilled if he was late for work, just to feel human again. After Ibiza, Ryan had the idea to take good old fashioned fish and chips and give a new spin with the keepings of tradition. Author Lindsey Salatka discusses her novel, Fish Heads and Duck Skin. This story is loosely based on Lindsey's own life, specifically the five years she and her family lived in Shanghai. When she began to write the book, Lindsey originally intended it to be a memoir but that quickly changed. Fish Heads and Duck Skin is the fictional story of a woman far from home who learns to fall in love with herself and her place in the world. And the inspiration for the book's title? (Hint: Her daughter's two favorite foods.)
Osaka Popstar is the pop-punk music and art project of singer/producer John Cafiero, long-time Misfits & Ramones collaborator and platinum selling film and video director. The critically acclaimed debut album “Osaka Popstar & the American Legends of Punk” features frontman Cafiero with a revolving lineup of punk-rock legends as guests in his backing band including members of the Misfits, Ramones, Black Flag, the Voidoids and more. Other recent Osaka Popstar releases include members of Superchunk, Bob Mould, The Smithereens, Sparks, Roxy Music, Milk ‘n' Cookies, and the Voluptous Horror of Karen Black in the backing band. Cafiero's long standing collaborations with the Misfits remain consistent two decades deep on both a creative and business level. Among other endeavors Cafiero edited the acclaimed book “Commando: the Autobiography of Johnny Ramone”, Directed the chart topping “Ramones Raw” documentary, and modern day cult-classic feature film “Big Money Hustlas” starring the Insane Clown Posse, Rudy Ray Moore (aka “Dolemite”), WWE's Mick Foley, & the Jerky Boys. In addition to the legendary Misfits (currently headlining arena shows reuniting Original Misfits co-founders Glenn Danzig & Jerry Only), Cafiero also manages the Estate of Dee Dee Ramone (of the world famous Ramones). When the Ramones received a lifetime achievement Grammy Award in 2011, Cafiero had the honor of accepting and speaking on behalf of the late punk icon. Cafiero has produced music by everyone from punk icons the Misfits, to the late pop icon Ronnie Spector—and the #1 charting album “Dr. Demento Covered in Punk” which he produced and conceived of. His band Osaka Popstar's cover of the ‘demented' classic “Fish Heads” (from “Dr. Demento Covered in Punk”) was ranked in the top 10 most requested songs of 2018 on the Dr. Demento Show and the focus of a fully-animated music video.
