American journalist
POPULARITY
Founded in 1970, NPR is America's most powerful broadcast news network. Despite being overshadowed by the larger and more glamorous PBS, public radio has long been home to shows such as All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and This American Life that captivate millions of listeners in homes, cars, and workplaces across the nation. In On Air, a book fourteen years in the making, journalist Steve Oney tells the history of this institution, tracing the comings and goings of legendary on-air talents (Bob Edwards, Susan Stamberg, Ira Glass, Cokie Roberts, and many others) and the rise and fall and occasional rise again of brilliant and sometimes venal executives. Oney depicts how NPR created a medium for extraordinary journalism—in which reporters and producers use microphones as paintbrushes and the voices of people around the world as the soundtrack of stories both global and local. Featuring details on the controversial firing of Juan Williams, the sloppy dismissal of Bob Edwards, and a $235 million bequest by Joan B. Kroc, widow of the founder of McDonald's, On Air also chronicles NPR's shift into the digital world and its early embrace of podcasting formats, establishing the network as a formidable media empire. Steve Oney is a longtime journalist who worked for many years as a staff writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Magazine and Los Angeles magazine. He has also contributed articles to many national publications, including Esquire, The Wall Street Journal, New York magazine, GQ, and The New York Times Magazine. His history of the lynching of Leo Frank, And the Dead Shall Rise, won the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award and the National Jewish Book Award. Oney was educated at the University of Georgia and at Harvard, where he was a Nieman Fellow. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Madeline Stuart. Steve Scher is a writer, broadcaster, and interviewer. His children's book, The Moon Bear, came out in 2022. Over his 28 years on local public radio, he won awards for his incisive coverage of public affairs, breaking news and his beyond-the-headlines approach to issues. His in-depth interviews with award-winning authors, political leaders, scientists, artists and active citizens are noted for their intelligence and sensitivity. Most summers since 2009, he has taught a Communications Department class on interviewing at the University of Washington. Buy the Book On Air: The Triumph and Tumult of NPR Third Place Books

Back to The Fertility Podcast archive for this episode to celebrate the release of the Netflix movie 'Joy' - Natalie has shared a conversation she had Connie Orbach about how she started her research to curate the British Science Museum's exhibition about the story of IVF.What was discussed: Connie herself admitted how she didn't realize how much content she would find in the archives from Leslie Brown, regarding the correspondence she received from all around the world.Connie talked about Jean Purdy who I've learned all about over the last couple of weeks and she is talked about as being IVF's forgotten pioneer, despite being written about by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards as one of the three of them. Connie has written a really good blog here Jean was hired as a lab technician however she was tasked with managing the laboratory and in reality, she did much more. Jean Purdy was not just central to the running of the lab but also to the scientific work. Connie and I spoke about whether her gender meant she was taken less seriously by reporters? Possibly, seeing as she was recorded in the photos as being the 'midwife'. Was her role as a lab technician seen as unimportant next to that of the surgeon and the scientist? This is so ironic seeing as she is credited with first discovering the blastocyst embryo stage, one of the key breakthroughs in our understanding of an embryo's development.Whatever the reason, it was not for lack of trying from Edwards. He repeatedly emphasized Purdy's importance and unsuccessfully lobbied her name to be added to the commemorative plaque placed at the site of their original clinic. Read more in Connie's blog and here are some other articles that are written for the exhibitionSally Cheshire, chair of the HFEA has also written a blog for the exhibition. AP correspondent Margie Szaroleta reports on Obit-Bob Edwards
Bob Edwards, National Public Radio senior correspondent and longtime host of “Morning Edition,” has died. His sonorous voice has kept millions of NPR listeners company for decades. Edwards talked with Marcia Franklin in 2004 about his career and his book “Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism.” Originally aired: 07/22/2004
The death by gunshot of Hillary Clinton's lover, lawyer, and best friend in 1993 was the highest suspicious death of a government official since JFK. Deputy White House Counsel Vince Foster handled the Clinton's most secretive matters and hired investigators to track down and threaten dozens of women sleeping with Bill.Among the many very questionable items in the investigation of Vince Foster's death are the following:•The coroner's report says x-rays were taken, but the he testified to Senators none were taken.•When a paramedic approached Foster's body, he saw men running away into the woods.•The first person to find Foster's body guarded the entrance to the CIA.•Hillary testified she did not see Foster for a month before his death. A staffer testified she was in his office four times.•The FBI never ran a check on the one fingerprint found on the gun.•Paramedic Richard Arthur explained on record why many items were left unreported: “Lt. Bianchi told me from orders higher up that I'm not allowed to talk to anybody about this if I value my job.”•The official report describes a head wound, but of the 26 people at the death scene, no one noticed a mouth wound or an exit wound in the skull. But several saw a neck wound, just what you might expect if an assassin was pressing a gun up against a taller man like Foster.•An exit wound appears in the Fiske Report thanks to the doctor at the Fairfax County morgue, Julian Orenstein … but he told a reporter he was surprised the Fiske Report implied an exit wound. “I never saw one directly,” he said.•Detective John Rolla: "I probed his head and there was no big hole there.”•The lead prosecutor resigned after much pressure from the Office of Independent Counsel: “They told me, to quote, this is a quote: ‘Back off.' It was either ‘back off' or ‘back down.' They used both.”•The first officer to take photos, Franz Ferstl, said his seven polaroids were snatched up by a superior at the body scene. They were never seen again. Detective John Rolla took a number of photos that were lost. “I mean, I had them in the office that night, I did reports, and I don't know what happened,” he testified in Senate Depositions.•The official photographer for the scene was Park Police technician Pete Simonella. His entire roll of 35 mm photos was declared “underexposed” by the FBI. He was surprised. His camera has never failed before or since.•Sgt. Bob Edwards arrived and took charge of the scene. The other Park Police officers were not familiar with him. “I didn't know who this guy was. Nobody [knew] who this guy was,” said Detective Rolla•Edwards took the seven polaroids taken. Sgt. Bob Edwards was never mentioned by the FBI or Robert Fiske. The Senate never took his deposition. The one and only interview of the first officer in command at Vince Foster's death scene was conducted years later by the Starr Investigation. It remains secret.Dean W. In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with Bob Edwards, a Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) coach, who has a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MSc in Advanced Safety Engineering Management. Bob is also the co-author of ‘Bob's Guide to Operational Learning' and a member of The Hop Hub, a consortium that guides people on their HOP journey.HOP considers how humans and organizations interact to accomplish work. It's a thought process that allows us to build more error-tolerant systems and teaches us that expecting perfection from workers, processes or procedures is not realistic. In this thought-provoking interview, Bob helps safety professionals explore the complex nature of work and learn how to gain a deeper understanding of their operations. He explains why modern work is so complex with a multitude of constantly adapting interconnecting interactions and reminds us that humans aren't just reliable machines.Bob suggests leadership doesn't usually appreciate this complexity as they focus on high-level metrics and urges HSE professionals to be more open about the actual context underlying these numbers. He reveals the limitations of simplification, the 5 Whys, making predictions and trying to fix everything. And highlights the virtues of listening, curiosity, respectful relationships, psychological safety and learning from success (as well as failure).HOP is often accused of lacking accountability, and Bob addresses this challenge and explains how HOP will actually increase co-worker responsibility and commitment.Using many real-life examples of the benefits of operational learning, Bob teaches us that understanding complexity coupled with collaboration, empathy and mutual respect can create more reliable and resilient workplace safety.Find out more about Bob's work and HOP:Human and Organizational Performance | HOP HubTo contact Bob directly:hop_coach@outlook.comThe book Bob co-authored:Amazon.com: Bob's Guide to Operational Learning: How to Think Like a Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) Coach: 9798579532077: Edwards, Bob, Baker, Andrea: BooksAuthors recommended by Bob:Amazon.com: Todd Conklin: Books, Biography, Blogs, Audiobooks, KindleHome - Sidney DekkerErikhollnagel.comEdgar Schein - WikipediaBob Edwards on LinkedIn:Bob Edwards | LinkedInSafety Labs is created by Slice, the only safety knife on the market with a finger-friendly® blade. Bob Edwards went through the Army ROTC program at Lafayette College and was commissioned as an officer in 1960. Soon, he was on his way to Germany at a very sensitive time in the Cold War as Berlin was divided in 1961 and became a focal point of the Cold War once again. Shortly after that deployment, Edwards was assigned to a new unit testing whether air assets could move troops and equipment as well or better than wheeled vehicles. He was also named company commander in what would become the 1st Battaltion of the 7th Cavalry within the 1st Air Mobile Division.Edwards and the other men of the air mobile division arrived in Vietnam in the summer of 1965. Just a couple of months later, in November 1965, they were involved in the heaviest fighting the U.S. would see in the early years of the war - the battle for Landing Zone X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Edwards details the events that led up to the battle, how the mission unfolded, and what the intense fighting was like right up until he was wounded and forced to evacuate.Edwards also describes his recovery, his subsequent assignments, why the battalion's commanding officer, Hal Moore, was such a great leader and why Moore's wife, Julia was such a powerful force back at home.

In this episode, Mary Conquest speaks with Josh Bryant, a General Manager of People, Risk and Sustainability who's worked in the mining industry for over 20 years and implemented an award-winning critical risk management system.Josh has always been open to different workplace safety frameworks and uses scientific reasoning to decide which elements to adopt or reject.
