Lately it feels like everything we love is on hiatus: Night Vale, Lore Olympus, Saga, it's all on break. So that means we've got time to go watch some of the amazing movies that've come out lately, right? AHAHAHA no of course not, we're terrible at movies. Instead we're wading through Book of Boba Fett (can't quite recommend it) and Andor (definitely recommend but wow is it dark) and losing our minds about the Loki season two trailer. (Cue the fangirl SQUEEEEEE it's going to be so good!) And because we are the way we are, we also wander into tangents like the stupid Twitter is now X nonsense, Red Letter Media's Spitballs pilot, Zero Punctuation, Midnight Mass, the writer's strike, the existential threat of AI, and people wanting to make TV less compelling so it won't interfere with our doomscrolling. First though we had to talk a little bit about the passing of Paul Reubens, and tell the story of how he became friends with our parents. RIP, Paul, thank you for the lamp. This week's outro is a clip from Island In The Sky by Psychadelik Pedestrian. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Original broadcast date September 8, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/09/binary-system-podcast-329-wtnv-213-murals/ It's no secret that the Binary System Podcast team is always finding moments that would be perfect for fan art (we do love us some fan art). This week's episode felt like the Welcome To Night Vale writers were throwing down multiple challenges to fan artists. Listen in as we recap the City Council's latest attempt to bring in some sweet, sweet tourist bucks by commissioning a dozen or so new murals by a not-so-anonymous artist. (Who's name would have been a cute joke that we whiffed by not pronouncing it consistently. BANsky? BANKsy? Is that how it's spelled? No way to know...) It's kind of a short episode this week since we still haven't watched more Sandman (bad fans, no cookie), so after the recap we ramble a little bit about speakeasies, multi-purpose bars, the Hugo Award winners, and the vagaries of streaming services (Starz, why DO you only have season 1 of American Gods anyway?) This week's outro is a clip from Midnight Drones by Psychadelik Pedestrian. Hugh's review of Moonfall can be found here, and Leland's review of Star Trek Mission Las Vegas 2022 can be found here. Original broadcast date September 1, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/09/binary-system-podcast-328-lore-olympus-and-the-sandman-episode-2/ We're back with an actual audio episode this week as Kathryn's on the mend from the "NOT COVID Thank You Very Much But Still Pretty Annoying" Plague, and thank goodness, because we've got to talk about the first two episodes of the third (and final!) season of Lore Olympus. Will Hades and Persephone figure out exactly what they are to each other? Will Zeus leave them alone? Is this the calm before the storm? WHAT IS APOLLO UP TO YOU KNOW IT'S SOMETHING. (Major spoilers for episodes 207 and 208, obv.) After that it's even more spoilers for The Sandman, because we've both watched episode two and we love everything they're doing EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE THING. NEIL. Original broadcast date March 26, 2020. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2020/03/binary-system-podcast-216-quarantine-watch-party-options/ "We should try that Netflix Watch Party extension!" (https://www.netflixparty.com/) "All of us in three states watching a movie together!" "So what should we watch?" ".......uh...." Thus launching an hour-long conversation between Elizabeth, Kathryn, Nathan and Hannah, trying to figure out, among all the movies on Netflix and Amazon, what we could all watch with Mom and Dad. When you take into account what everyone likes and hates and what everybody's already seen recently and what we can actually get our hands on, we need to have one of those rooms with the post-it notes and strings tied everywhere to figure it out. We edited the hell out of this conversation to take out all the times we were just scrolling through award lists and going "hmm......let's seeee..." This week's outro is a clip from Nocturnia https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Psychadelik_Pedestrian/Nocturnia/05_-_Psychadelik_Pedestrian_-_Nocturnia by Psychadelik Pedestrian. (We used that one back on episode 120, but we like it so we're using it again.) https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/03/binary-system-podcast-120-black-panther-and-idws-transformers/ Here's the list of movies! (Mostly!) Possible movies and shows for the whole family to watch (some we've never seen, and some that some of us have seen, but we'd like to see again with everybody): Schitt's Creek Hidden Figures Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy (both the movie and the original mini series) Back to the Future Raiders of the Lost Ark O Brother Where Art Thou The Big Sick Call the Midwife Knives Out Brick The original True Grit The ORIGINAL Wicker Man The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley Parasite (maybe?) Last Temptation of Christ (maybe?) The Shining MST3K (Starcrash or Gunslinger) Movies we like that also got a mention (but we've either watched recently or didn't think Mom and Dad would like): The Apartment Finding Bobby Fisher Arrival Tag Into the Spider-Verse Black Panther Mad Max Fury Road Moonlight The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Inception Snowpiercer All About Eve Barry Lyndon What Did Jack Do Sling Blade As Good As It Gets The King's Speech BBC Sherlock (but only the first two seasons) Happy Face Movies actively ruled out: Disney's Animated Robin Hood (Dad doesn't like cartoons) The Irishman (Dad is interested but he can watch that ON HIS OWN) Black Panther (Mom and Dad aren't really into Superhero movies The Lobster (“Fuck off you stupid movie” - Elizabeth) The Guy Pearce Time Machine (meh, except for Orlando Jones) Cabin in the Woods (not really a Mom and Dad movie) Haunting of Hill House (We've all seen it. And Mom HATED it) Mystic River (Kathryn and Hannah disliked intensely) Remains of the Day (because it makes Nathan want to slap Anthony Hopkins) Howard's End (same reason as above) Okja (Jake Gyllenhall bugs) The Kingsman (little too violent and risqué to watch with one's parents) A Clockwork Orange (those of us who've seen it don't need to see it again.)
Original broadcast date March 29, 2018. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2018/03/binary-system-podcast-120-black-panther-and-idws-transformers/ So the main plan for the week was to talk all about Black Panther, and we do: we get into the fight scenes and the designs and the actors and the story and how Shuri is the most badass Disney Princess ever. And then we went into what we thought would be a quick word about the state of IDW's Transformers and went into this epic rant about what's going to happen. We go from what we know to what we don't know to sheer guesswork from what we've read in the comment threads of random blogs. Seriously, if you want to see the exact opposite of investigative journalism, listen in. UPDATE ON THE WHOLE IDW TRANSFORMERS THING (Because we recorded Monday night and now we have more info): Transformers will remain at IDW, but the whole storyline is definitely being rebooted. And we've had word that James Roberts will be working on the reboot launch, but will possibly leave Transformers after the first few issues. And we still (at time this episode posts) don't know WHY the relaunch is happening, not officially. Lots of speculation though. Stay tuned for more details. Well, she knows that NOW. Correction the second: the name of the actor who plays the main character in the upcoming Bad Samaritan is Robert Sheehan. Sorry, Robert, we got distracted by David Tennant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3203528/
In this episode of the HOPES podcast, we're talking about the brain on drugs. The recent movements to legalize cannabis and psychedelics in the United States and other countries around the world is based in part on promising research into the potential health benefits of the drugs when used in controlled settings. Listen in to hear from a psychedelics user who is gene positive for HD, a researcher from the University of Saskatchewan on cannabinoids for HD, two researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, and a psychedelic-assisted psychotherapist and research consultant about research on these Schedule 1 drugs and their therapeutic potential. The story behind the transition from Saint Nicholas to Santa Claus is one that includes murder, priest-punching, and ominous, demonic-looking companions. This episode looks at the legends behind an austere bishop who has been transformed into a magical, portly elf. **Note: as I say in the show, this episode is not for young children. The story of St. Nick includes grisly murders and mentions of prostitution. Listener discretion is advised.** The creature of the week is another sort of Santa from Spain who, in the old days, eschewed the coal for bad children for a long, deadly scythe. Become a member?
