“I don't know if in Canada or in the States the sounds are different, but here, Toyota, for instance, is very abstract, high-pitched, it's a bike or like 'peeeeee,' like this, for instance. The Renault is more reassuring, more warm, it's welcoming, it's a little bit more, you know, it's less cold than other sounds.""Sure, yeah. Well, I guess maybe if it doesn't focus specifically on the sound of the engine, but even the engine sounds have been changing over the years right, yes. They're getting, like you said, they're getting softer or they're getting electric." “Yeah, absolutely” -- Andrea Cera My next guest is an Italian sound designer and composer, classically trained in piano and composition, along with extensive learning in computer music. Since 1998 he's created over 40 soundtracks for contemporary dance and theatre works. He's collaborated with the prestigious Casa Paganini – InfoMus, a research center and university in Genova, on research projects about cross-modality and human movement sonification, and a few years ago he began a collaboration with IRCAM and Renault for the design of external electric car sounds, from Renault Zoé to the new E-Tech 2022.His name is Andrea Cera and if you'd like to know more about designing sound for a purpose, he's definitely the right person to ask. We'll cover both sides of the coin, from subtle soundscapes and ambiance to aggressive music and even using noise as art. It's a fascinating discussion, so stay tuned! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. I would so appreciate that. (0:00:01) - The Power of SoundAs the episode begins, we talk about sound's power to move its listeners, to spark powerful emotions like excitement and fear, and even, in one case that Andrea recalls, to stop a riot. "There is one moment," he says, recounting the infamous 1969 Altamont Free Concert, "where The Thirteenth Floor Elevators play, and the girl who sings, they see a riot, and she starts calming the people, and she has this, like, in, I don't know, ten seconds. She talks like with your tone, like this, and the riot stops."He also tells us about how the power of sound first inspired him as a young man when, while working in the theater, he saw for himself the effect his music and sound design had on audiences. “And it was around that age,” Andrea explains, “that I really started to say, wow, I mean, what you learn studying composition really works in a kind of subconscious way” He also explains his philosophy when it comes to sound design, and how, when it comes to audio, less is often more: “For me, design is distillation, it's taking away and just using the minimum necessary to convey a sensation.” (0:12:25) - Car Sounds and Branding EvolutionOur conversation turns to Andrea's sound design work with electric and self-driving vehicles, and the challenge of holding a driver's attention in what might...

Dr. Robert Fredrickson has recently released a book all about this issue: Magnesium Answers: Unlocking the Secrets of Magnesium. As a functional medicine practitioner, he spent his career educating patients and doctors, but he also has a background as a product educator for major supplement companies. With that, Dr. Fredrickson is in a unique position to help us cut through the noise and understand the power of magnesium. On today's episode, Dr. Robert Fredrickson talks about all things magnesium – what it does, why we should care, how much do we need, and how do we choose among all of the different forms of magnesium supplementation? Luisella Mazza"Bum Bum Bum"Fazi Editorewww.fazieditore.itTutti i cuori battono.

The immune system works tirelessly to maintain health and well-being. This formidable defense mechanism is comprised of a vast array of cells, tissues, proteins, and molecules that work together to identify and neutralize foreign invaders. The inflammation that ensues can be recognized by redness, pain, swelling, and heat. In order for this process to take place, the body needs to be able to identify what is ‘friend or foe'. But how? There are certain molecular patterns that our immune system recognizes as part of this surveillance and recognition. Some patterns are associated with pathogens - “pathogen-associated molecular patterns” (PAMPs). Others are associated with damaged cells (DAMPs) or lifestyle choices (LAMPs). In today's episode, we do a quick refresher on adaptive and innate immunity. We also discuss some signaling molecules that trigger the inflammatory cascade – PAMPs, DAMPs, and LAMPs. Today on The Lab Report: 3:40 Break it down – innate vs. adaptive immunity 6:40 Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) 10:25 Sterile inflammation: damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) 14:30 Lifestyle-associated molecular patterns (LAMPs) & chronic inflammation 18:25 Question of the Day How do we turn off the LAMPs? Hi my name is Trista, I'm an award-winning writer scholar and researcher of Oxford, Berkeley and Taipei Medical university, whose life has been nearly ruined by police brutality. My pets & I are victim of vicious false report & then subsequent excessive force and unlawful search and seizure by police in Tucson Arizona. Police RAIDED MY PROPERTY WITHOUT PROBABLE CAUSE AUG 30, SENT US ALL TO JAIL! & MY 140 ANIMALS ARE STILL SUFFERING BECAUSE OF THEM! Corrupt, ABUSIVE authorities PLACED ENORMOUS, PROHIBITIVE BOND OF $54,100 ON EVEN TRYING TO GET MY ANIMALS BACK! So unfair! In fact it's unconstitutional! 8th amendment is supposed to protect us against excessive fines and bonds and cruel and unusual punishment, which this is! Imagine what they're doing, causing so much suffering for other peaceful, law abiding citizens; how many people are in prison right now because of these corrupt mfers??? We are in this to win this, and that means working on changing the laws and policies at local, State and National levels, so this horrific tragedy of epic proportions can never happen to anyone else! As of now, AUTHORITIES HAVE REFUSED TO RELEASE OUR ANIMALS, EVEN THOUGH WE PROVED TO JUDGE THEY WERE SEIZED FROM US UNLAWFULLY; & THEY ARE TREATING THEM CRUELLY IN THEIR CUSTODY! Heartbreaking!

Strategically located in the northwest and northeast corners of Italian Peninsula respectively, Genoa (or Genova) and Venice were, historically, two independent republics who grew rich through maritime trade. But as their wealth and power continued to grow, they soon each other as a threat to their dominance, which quickly escalated into war. But unlike other conflicts, this series of skirmishes would stretch well over a century. Find out how exactly they came about, and how they ultimately ended, this week on the 'History Loves Company' podcast! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historylovescompany/support
When it comes to changing the way the world views mental health, one voice remains consistent, science-based, empathetic, and passionate. That's Brendan Vermeire. Brendan is dedicated to advancing the science of mental health dysfunction through his research, teaching, writing, and speaking. Here in functional and precision medicine, we are always looking for the root cause of any dysfunction. However, Brendan reminds us that mental health can have several root causes that need to be addressed and many of us are falling short when it comes to treating patients with mental illness. The topic of intestinal parasites and their prevalence is hotly debated in functional medicine. Furthermore, the increasing trend of people performing a ‘parasite cleanse' of the GI tract can be dangerous. Parasites are diagnosed in the stool using microscopy, direct exam, and PCR – but even then, not all parasites should be treated. Some can cause significant illness, yet others are not invasive, self-limiting, and considered nonpathogenic. In today's episode, we give a refresher course on gut parasites, discuss different ways to assess them, and introduce the topic of nonpathogenic parasites that don't need to be treated. Today on The Lab Report: 3:50 Prevalence and transmission of parasites 6:45 What is a parasite? Are there nonpathogenic parasites? 8:10 3 main classes of parasites 10:20 Detecting parasites in the stool 13:10 Nonpathogenic parasites Chilomastix mesnili, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba dispar, Entamoeba hartmanni, Entamoeba polecki, Iodamoeba buetschlii 16:50 Potentially pathogenic parasites 19:25 Question of the Day Why doesn't Genova offer sensitivities for parasites on the GI Effects? When it comes to assessing the microbiome, technology continuously evolves. With that, our understanding of the microbiome deepens. There is a lot of confusion out there regarding technology. Companies use marketing spin to lead you to believe the newest is the best when in fact, every technology has its strengths and weaknesses. No one method can capture the entire dynamic of the microbiome. Here at Genova, we use many methods to give you the most complete look at overall gut health. Today we simplify the science behind laboratory assays used to study the microbiome – culture, qPCR, metagenomics, and transcriptomics. Every method has its advantages and disadvantages. We're cutting through the confusion with no marketing spin, just the facts. Today on The Lab Report: 3:30 So much confusion around laboratory methods - why should we care? 7:45 Culture technology is old but still so important 11:10 Conventional PCR and qPCR (aka Real-Time PCR) 15:40 Beware of these qPCR shortcomings 19:50 Next-Gen Sequencing 21:40 Metagenomics – not all labs are created equally!! 26:55 The vital role of taxonomy libraries 30:30 Transcriptomics and assessing RNA Additional Resources: GI Effects Microbiomix Genova Connect PROMO CODE: TheLabReport20 for 20% off Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week's episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. Many clinicians learn about functional medicine and get very excited to start but just can't figure out how to fit it into their practice or make the big leap away from conventional, insurance-based practice models. Dr. Michael Hilts figured it out. Dr. Hilts found out about the “Direct Primary Care” model which allowed him to fulfill his dream of bringing the best healthcare possible to his patients. In addition, his innovative strategies with outside imaging centers, laboratories, and pharmacies bring down the cost to patients in an almost unbelievable way! Could this be the answer to fixing our current healthcare system? Today we meet Dr. Michael Hilts who introduces us to the Direct Primary Care (DPC) practice model which is rapidly spreading across the country. You'll hear about innovative ways he uses DPC and other strategies to bring back the spirit of primary care, challenge the current healthcare paradigm, and turn it on its head! Eloisa Morra"Calvino. Viaggio in Colombia.
When people hear the word ‘cannabinoid', what usually comes to mind is marijuana (also known as cannabis) or CBD oil (cannabidiol). But did you know, the body creates its own natural cannabinoids using the endocannabinoid system? This endocannabinoid system is a mysterious and complex interplay of chemical messengers throughout the brain and body which in essence contributes to our body's homeostasis. It regulates a broad array of physiological processes including pain, mood, sleep, inflammation, appetite, and more. Rather than relying on marijuana or CBD products, Dr. Joe Feuerstein teaches that there are ways to boost the endocannabinoid system naturally. Many of us think of adipose tissue as just a place to store excess fat to be used for energy. However, adipose tissue is very biologically active and secretes some important hormones and mediators called adipokines. These messengers help regulate glucose and lipid metabolism, control hunger, and affect insulin levels. That being said, ALL of our hormones work together like a symphony – cortisol, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, and don't forget the adipokines. In today's episode, we discuss important bioactive messengers created by our fat tissue (leptin and adiponectin), how they affect us systemically, and strategies to optimize them. Today on The Lab Report: 3:40 Adipose tissue, adipokines, and types of fat 7:40 What are adipokines? 10:25 Adiponectin does great things 13:00 How to increase adiponectin 14:20 Better Know a Biomarker – Leptin! 17:40 Obesity and leptin resistance 19:25 Treating leptin resistance 21:35 Leptin vs. ghrelin 23:15 Adiponectin/leptin ratio Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week's episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. The commensal bacteria in the gut microbiome are responsible for so many important functions. Their influence is far-reaching as it relates to overall health. Research shows us that the more diverse that community of bacteria is, the more beneficial it is to systemic health. But what does diversity mean and how do we measure it? There are many calculations used when it comes to diversity of the microbiome, and they can sometimes give differing information. It's important to understand what's being measured in order to clinically correlate the result. In today's episode, we discuss the industry standard Shannon Diversity Index as measured on Genova's brand new Microbiomix profile.
