Holiday Oddities: Stolen Santa Bones, Pooping Logs, and the Strangest Christmas Traditions on Earth This holiday bonus episode of The Box of Oddities unwraps the weirdest, darkest, and most unexpectedly heartwarming Christmas stories from history. Kat and Jethro explore the true fate of Saint Nicholas's bones, including the medieval relic theft that scattered Santa's remains across Europe—and the unsettling legend of “Santa juice” still collected from his tomb. From there, the episode sleighs straight into bizarre holiday traditions from around the world: Catalonia's infamous pooping nativity figure, the gift-pooping Christmas log that children beat with sticks, Iceland's child-eating troll Grýla and her terrifying Yule Cat, and the unsettling folklore behind Santa once writing threatening letters to children instead of the other way around. Balancing the strange with the sincere, the episode also highlights true stories of compassion and humanity during wartime, including the Christmas Truce of 1914, enemies sheltering together on Christmas Eve during World War II, George Washington returning an enemy general's dog, and a Japanese pilot gifting his ancestral samurai sword to an American town decades after bombing it. It's a holiday episode filled with macabre history, unsettling folklore, absurd traditions, and genuine hope—a reminder that even in the darkest seasons, people can still surprise us. On today's episode, we discuss what Advent really is, how the candle colors and readings point to hope, peace, love, joy, and finally Christ, and why many low-church Protestants grew up never hearing about it at all. The conversation wrestles with whether Christians should say “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” in public spaces, and how to navigate witnessing without turning restaurants and workplaces into unwanted mission fields. Jimmy then digs into the history behind Christmas, arguing it is not borrowed from pagan festivals, explaining how early Christians connected Jesus' conception and death dates, and showing how commerce, Santa marketing, and Rudolph ads have reshaped the season. Along the way, the hosts have fun with Saint Nicholas as a gift-giver who also “punched heretics,” joke about Druids and Christmas trees, and reflect on wanting Christmas back as a truly Christian holy day rather than a generic winter break. Don't miss it!

Much of this cultural exchange comes from the tight familial bonds between the British and German royal families. Christmas may feel magical, but behind the scenes it is one of the most complex and unforgiving supply-chain operations on the planet. In this special Christmas episode of Interlinks, Patrick Daly — The Macro-to-Micro Strategist — explores how Christmas became the world's most influential consumer season, stretching across cultures, continents, and logistics networks. In many markets, up to 20% of annual retail sales are compressed into a single, immovable delivery window, turning December into the ultimate annual stress test for global supply chains. The episode reveals how the Christmas supply chain actually begins months earlier, in late summer, as manufacturers, retailers, and logistics providers lock in forecasts, inventory, and transport capacity. By November, systems are running flat out — and even small disruptions can cascade into shortages and delays.Patrick traces the deep historical roots of Christmas consumption, from ancient winter solstice festivals and Roman Saturnalia, through Christian gift-giving traditions, to the evolution of Saint Nicholas into Santa Claus — the original global supply-chain orchestrator. The episode then dives into today's iconic Christmas supply chains:Seasonal fresh foods like turkeys, where timing and perishability leave zero room for errorToys and electronics, exposing the fragility of long, globalised manufacturing lead timesAlcohol and seasonal beverages, where distribution becomes the real bottleneckParcel and e-commerce logistics, operating at near-redline capacity every DecemberFrom Japan's Christmas fried chicken to Spain's turrón, Italy's panettone, Germany's stollen, and the Philippines' Noche Buena, the episode shows how global systems must bend around deeply local traditions. From a macro-to-micro perspective, Christmas reveals a powerful truth: supply chains may be global, but demand is driven by culture, ritual, and meaning. It is the perfect illustration of how long-term planning, precise execution, and zero-tolerance delivery windows come together — all in service of one extraordinary day. Hosted on Acast. His story reminds us that the true meaning of Christmas isn't found in what we receive, but in how we reflect the love of Jesus to others.A Childhood Shaped by Faith—and LossNicholas was born around A.D. 280 into a wealthy Christian family in Patara, a bustling port city in modern-day Turkey. From an early age, his parents taught him the teachings of Jesus—especially the call to care for the poor and the vulnerable. Their daily example planted seeds of compassion that would later bear extraordinary fruit.A tragedy occurred when Nicholas was still young. An epidemic claimed the lives of both his parents, leaving him orphaned—but also leaving him with a significant inheritance. In his grief, Nicholas turned to his faith. Rather than clinging to his wealth, he saw it as a means to serve others and live out the gospel.Nicholas became known for quietly helping those in desperate situations. His most famous act of generosity involved a poor man and his three daughters. In that culture, a dowry was required for marriage. Without it, the daughters faced the horrifying prospect of being sold into slavery.Moved by their plight, Nicholas acted—secretly. Under the cover of night, he delivered a bag of gold to the family, securing the eldest daughter's future. He returned twice more, each time providing enough to ensure another daughter could marry safely. When the father eventually discovered Nicholas's identity, Nicholas urged him to thank God alone. He took Jesus' words to heart: “When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matthew 6:3). Nicholas didn't seek recognition—only faithfulness.A Shepherd With Courage and ConvictionLater in life, Nicholas became the bishop of Myra, where his compassion expanded beyond individuals to an entire community. He was known for defending the poor, standing up for the innocent, and shepherding his people with deep love.During the persecution of Christians under Emperor Diocletian, Nicholas risked imprisonment for his faith. He later attended the Council of Nicaea in A.D. 325, standing firm for the truth of the gospel. Yet what truly defined him wasn't his position—it was his Christlike love.Nicholas lived as if true wealth was found not in possessions, but in a living relationship with God.After his death on December 6, A.D. 343, stories of Nicholas's generosity spread across generations. He became known as a protector of children, a patron of sailors, and a symbol of selfless giving. Over time, his life inspired the figure we now associate with Santa Claus—but behind the legend stands a man devoted to glorifying God.The story of St. Nicholas challenges us to reconsider the meaning of Christmas. His life wasn't about extravagant gifts or public praise. It was about embodying the love of Christ—sacrificial, humble, and freely given.Living the True Meaning of ChristmasThis Christmas, as we exchange gifts and gather with loved ones, let's remember that the greatest gift has already been given—Jesus Christ, who came to save sinners and offer eternal life.Like St. Nicholas, we are called to share that gift with others. Through generosity, service, and simple acts of kindness, we can reflect the light of Christ in a world desperate for hope. As Jesus reminded us, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”May the story of St. Nicholas inspire us to give generously, love deeply, and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas—because it's not the gifts we receive, but the love we share, that makes this season truly special. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I've heard that even if you have a will, your estate still has to go through court, but that having a trust allows you to avoid that. One of the main characters in the Christmas-themed movie “Red One” is Krampus, a horned figure from folklore who was said to hunt naughty children. If it sounds horrifying, it was meant to be: children were told that Saint Nicholas would bring the well-behaved children gifts, while Krampus would beat them with a birch rod. And maybe eat them.So why are we still so interested in centuries-old myths? Send us a textA cave near Bethlehem. Stone, straw, and a light that still reaches us. We follow Saint Nicholas's quiet pilgrimage and find our own footing in a season when headlines blur, and hearts grow tired. The story of Emmanuel, God with us, becomes more than a lyric—it turns into a lifeline you can hold, a place you can enter, a presence you can trust when love feels heavy and the calendar won't slow down.We open with Nicholas's years near Beit Jala, exploring how a humble cave shaped his generous life. From there, we turn to the liturgies of Doug McKelvey's Every Moment Holy, to name the ache of too much information and too little strength. What if the most faithful move is to honor creaturely limits? What if justice and mercy begin with yielding the unbearable to the One whose shoulders can carry it? That shift reframes compassion, helping us respond to real needs that intersect our actual lives—family tensions, impatient lines, neighbors on edge—without going numb.Along the way, we offer simple prompts to list your griefs, discern your small share in God's redemptive work, and carry a single phrase of Scripture through the week. The goal isn't to escape reality; it's to live it with Emmanuel—fully God, fully human—beside you.If this speaks to you, follow the show, share it with a friend who needs rest, and leave a quick review to help others find this space. When most people think of Christmas, they picture cozy lights, warm cocoa, and jolly Saint Nick. But in parts of France and Belgium, children grew up with a much darker figure stalking the snowy streets: Père Fouettard, the “French Krampus” — Saint Nicholas' brutal Christmas punisher. In this chilling episode of Terrifying & True, we unwrap one of Europe's scariest Christmas legends, where miracle stories, war, and fear-based parenting all twist together in the shadows of the holiday season. We travel from the glowing Saint Nicholas Day festival in Nancy, where modern light shows retell the butcher's crime, back to the Middle Ages, when tales of three boys butchered, salted, and resurrected turned Saint Nicholas into a protector—and doomed their killer to walk forever by his side with a whip and a sack for bad children. Then we follow the story into the 1500s and the Siege of Metz, where a grotesque, whip-wielding effigy of Emperor Charles V helped transform a political insult into a permanent Christmas bogeyman. As the legend spreads, Père Fouettard becomes the nightmare shadow of Saint Nicholas Day: chains clanking on cobblestones, a hooded figure in filthy black, a bundle of switches in one hand and an empty sack in the other, ready to terrorize misbehaving kids while the saint hands sweets to the good. Along the way, we meet his terrifying cousins across Europe: Krampus in the Alps, Hans Trapp in Alsace, Knecht Ruprecht and Belsnickel in Germany, Schmutzli in Switzerland, and Zwarte Piet in the Low Countries—a whole dark Christmas folklore universe built on the promise of gifts… and the threat of pain.Inside this episode:The butcher of Nancy – How a medieval story of murdered schoolboys, salted flesh, and a miraculous resurrection birthed one of the most disturbing Christmas horror tales in Europe.Saint Nicholas and his punisher – Why the beloved gift-giver needed a Christmas enforcer, and how Père Fouettard became the terrifying counterpart to holiday joy and presents. From siege to street parade – How a mocking effigy during the Siege of Metz slowly evolved into the ragged, terrifying figure marching beside Saint Nicholas in winter festivals today.Krampus and the other Christmas monsters – The wider world of scary Christmas creatures, from horned demons to scarecrow cannibals haunting the Advent season.Fear as a Christmas tradition – How generations of parents used whips, sacks, and coal as holiday pressure to keep kids “good” before Christmas morning—and why that idea is finally being questioned.Folklore in a changing world – The modern controversies over blackface portrayals, Zwarte Piet, and racist imagery, and how some communities are trying to keep the tradition while shedding its ugliest parts. If you love Christmas horror, spooky folklore, dark European legends, and the idea that not every Christmas story ends with cozy cheer, this episode drags you straight into the shadow side of the holidays—where Saint Nicholas brings the gifts… and Père Fouettard brings the whip.

Send us a text"Understanding is the essence of love" (Thich Nhat Hanh). The quiet before wonder can change everything. We move through Advent by stepping into the story of Saint Nicholas—not the myth, but the young man whose hidden generosity saved daughters from slavery and modeled a love that protects dignity. From that spark, we explore how real love is trained, not assumed: a discipline of attention that seeks to understand first, then act with compassion, joy, and freedom.I share why understanding is the essence of love and how it becomes a practical way forward when relationships feel stuck. Drawing on Thich Nhat Hanh's wisdom, we test our affection with two questions: Does this love bring joy, and does it protect freedom? Then we get tactical with Nonviolent Communication, reframing conflict from a win-lose standoff into a process grounded in connection before strategy. You'll learn to name needs clearly, separate needs from solutions, build trust through empathy, and translate requests into positive, actionable language—skills that can change your family table, your marriage, and your holiday gatherings.Threaded throughout is a faith-centered reminder that no human can meet every need we carry. Rooting our belonging in God lightens the load we place on those we love and helps us set boundaries that honor both safety and dignity. With stories of courage, hard choices, and repair, we map a path to wholehearted living where generosity is quiet, presence is powerful, and hope is stubborn. If this conversation helps you breathe deeper or love better, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review to help others find the show. Friends of the Rosary,Today, December 6, we celebrate the memorial of St. Nicholas of Myra (d. 346), a 4th-century bishop and one of the most popular saints in the Western world, honored as the patron saint of children.Born in Lycia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), he practiced remarkable spiritual and corporal works of mercy and worked tirelessly to defend the faith. His legends of generosity made him into today's Santa Claus, a white-bearded gentleman who captivates children with promises of gifts on Christmas Eve.During the persecutions of Diocletian, he was imprisoned for preaching Christianity, but was released during the reign of Emperor Constantine. His relics are still preserved in the church of San Nicola in Bari. There is an oily substance, known as Manna di S. Nicola, highly valued for its medicinal powers, that is said to flow.Veneration for Nicholas spread throughout Europe and Asia, and countless miracles were attributed to the saint's intercession. The story of Saint Nicholas reached America in a distorted form. The Dutch Protestants carried a version of the saint's life to New Amsterdam, portraying Nicholas as a Nordic or North Pole magician and wonder-worker who brings happiness to small children. Our present-day conception of Santa Claus has grown from this version.Catholics should think of Nicholas as a saint, a confessor of the faith and the bishop of Myra, not merely as a jolly man from the North Pole.Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Little is known about the historical Saint Nicholas who was born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor on what is now the southern coast of Turkey.  The earliest accounts of his life were written centuries after his death. On the night of December 5th each child put a pair of shoes outside their bedroom door. On the morning of the 6th there was a small gift in the shoes left by Saint Nicholas himself, reminding us to be of love a little more careful than anything else this season.Story Prompt: What one tradition or ritual do you continue at this time of year?  Who might it remind you of? Long before Christmas lists, shopping carts, and wrapping paper, there were gifts given for one reason alone: worship. Sophia Bricker opens this devotional with the story of Saint Nicholas—a man whose quiet, selfless generosity became the seed of a much later legend. His life reflects the heart of someone whose giving flowed out of devotion to Christ, not cultural expectation. But even before Nicholas, Scripture gives us another unforgettable picture of joyful generosity: the wise men. The Magi traveled far, guided by a star and propelled by hope. When they finally reached the child Jesus, they didn’t debate whether the gifts were too costly or wonder if He “needed” them. They simply bowed in awe and opened their treasures. Their gifts were symbolic—and sincere: Gold for His kingship. Frankincense for His priesthood. Myrrh for His sacrificial death. But more than symbolism, their offering revealed their hearts. They gave because they loved. They gave because they believed. They gave because worship compelled them. Jesus later taught, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).Our spending, our giving, our serving—they all reveal what we value most. For the follower of Christ, generosity is not an obligation. It is an overflow. Like Saint Nicholas, we feel convicted when our resources center on ourselves. Like the wise men, we long to lay what we have at Jesus’ feet. Like those early givers, our generosity flows from beholding the Savior for who He truly is. And the way generosity looks will be unique for each of us. Not everyone gives gold or frankincense. Not everyone tosses gifts through windows. But every believer has something to offer—time, talent, resources, compassion, presence, or encouragement. Generosity begins with worship.Worship leads to open hands.Open hands lead to lives that honor Christ. Bible Reading:“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” – Matthew 2:10–11 (NIV) Takeaway Truths The wise men’s gifts were rooted in joyful worship, not duty. Generosity reveals what we treasure most. Followers of Christ give from abundance, not scarcity. True generosity begins with beholding Jesus. Let’s Pray Great Savior, I stand in awe of Your majesty and grace. How incredible it is that You, the King of all creation, entered this world as a humble child and chose to identify Yourself with us. The wise men saw what so many missed—Your worth, Your glory, and Your identity as the promised Messiah. They bowed in worship and gave freely, not from pressure, but from overflowing joy. Lord, develop in me this same heart of generosity. Help me to use my time, my resources, and my gifts to honor You. Guide my giving so that it reflects trust, gratitude, and devotion. Everything I have is from You. Make me courageous and joyful in sharing my life with others, so that my generosity points back to You, the Giver of salvation and life. Amen. Send us a textA storm-tossed sky lantern lands in a front yard with a daughter's message to her dad, and a simple response turns into a global moment of shared grief and hope. That story becomes our gateway into the real Saint Nicholas—an early Christian bishop who noticed the vulnerable, met practical needs with courage, and quietly changed lives in a collapsing empire. We sit down with author and screenwriter Matt Mikalatos to explore his devotional, Praying with Saint Nicholas, and the surprising history behind a figure too often flattened into myth. From Patara to Myra, we step through persecution under Diocletian, the pivot of Constantine, and the Council of Nicaea, where core beliefs were hammered out amid risk and conviction. We revisit the famous dowry rescue that inspired stockings, the confessor tradition that modeled reconciliation after failure, and the gripping moment Nicholas halted an unjust execution—mercy with a spine of steel.Threaded through it all is a practical Advent invitation: become a noticer. Pair 1 John 4:7–21 with small daily acts that restore dignity in your neighborhood. Slip generosity where it's needed, listen deeply to someone who feels invisible, and choose sustainable compassion that protects your mental health while expanding your capacity to love. We also clear up confusion around venerating saints, reframing it as asking trusted elders in the great cloud of witnesses to pray with us, not instead of us.If you're longing for an Advent that feels grounded, historic, and fiercely hopeful, this conversation offers both story and structure. Today I want to tell you about the dark origins of Christmas, before Santa Claus ever existed. We're diving into Frau Perchta, a Christmas witch who visited homes with iron scissors and a taste for porridge...whether she had to cut it out of you or not. We'll also cover the real Saint Nicholas and his disturbing miracles, and the demonic Krampuses who worked alongside him to drag sinners straight to hell. This beloved holiday is actually as dark as a Brother Grimms fairytale….
