Send us a text"Understanding is the essence of love" (Thich Nhat Hanh). The quiet before wonder can change everything. We move through Advent by stepping into the story of Saint Nicholas—not the myth, but the young man whose hidden generosity saved daughters from slavery and modeled a love that protects dignity. From that spark, we explore how real love is trained, not assumed: a discipline of attention that seeks to understand first, then act with compassion, joy, and freedom.I share why understanding is the essence of love and how it becomes a practical way forward when relationships feel stuck. Drawing on Thich Nhat Hanh's wisdom, we test our affection with two questions: Does this love bring joy, and does it protect freedom? Then we get tactical with Nonviolent Communication, reframing conflict from a win-lose standoff into a process grounded in connection before strategy. You'll learn to name needs clearly, separate needs from solutions, build trust through empathy, and translate requests into positive, actionable language—skills that can change your family table, your marriage, and your holiday gatherings.Threaded throughout is a faith-centered reminder that no human can meet every need we carry. Rooting our belonging in God lightens the load we place on those we love and helps us set boundaries that honor both safety and dignity. With stories of courage, hard choices, and repair, we map a path to wholehearted living where generosity is quiet, presence is powerful, and hope is stubborn. If this conversation helps you breathe deeper or love better, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs it, and leave a review to help others find the show. Friends of the Rosary,Today, December 6, we celebrate the memorial of St. Nicholas of Myra (d. 346), a 4th-century bishop and one of the most popular saints in the Western world, honored as the patron saint of children.Born in Lycia in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), he practiced remarkable spiritual and corporal works of mercy and worked tirelessly to defend the faith. His legends of generosity made him into today's Santa Claus, a white-bearded gentleman who captivates children with promises of gifts on Christmas Eve.During the persecutions of Diocletian, he was imprisoned for preaching Christianity, but was released during the reign of Emperor Constantine. His relics are still preserved in the church of San Nicola in Bari. There is an oily substance, known as Manna di S. Nicola, highly valued for its medicinal powers, that is said to flow.Veneration for Nicholas spread throughout Europe and Asia, and countless miracles were attributed to the saint's intercession. The story of Saint Nicholas reached America in a distorted form. The Dutch Protestants carried a version of the saint's life to New Amsterdam, portraying Nicholas as a Nordic or North Pole magician and wonder-worker who brings happiness to small children. Our present-day conception of Santa Claus has grown from this version.Catholics should think of Nicholas as a saint, a confessor of the faith and the bishop of Myra, not merely as a jolly man from the North Pole.Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Saturday of the First Week of Advent Optional Memorial of St. Nicholas, 270-343; bishop of Myra, a city in Lycia, a province of Asia Minor; legend tells the best-known story about Nicholas concerning his charity toward a poor man who was unable to provide dowries for his three daughters of marriageable age; rather than see them forced into prostitution, Nicholas secretly tossed a bag of gold through the poor man’s window on three separate occasions, thus enabling the daughters to be married; over the centuries, this particular legend evolved into the custom of gift-giving on the saint’s feast; in the English-speaking countries, Saint Nicholas became, by a twist of the tongue, Santa Claus Office of Readings and Morning Prayer for 12/6/25 Gospel: Matthew 9:35-10:1, 5-8

Hello to you listening in Den Hague, the Netherlands!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Who is Saint Nicholas? Little is known about the historical Saint Nicholas who was born during the third century in the village of Patara in Asia Minor on what is now the southern coast of Turkey.  The earliest accounts of his life were written centuries after his death. Click HERE to learn more. But it is believed the life and deeds of St. Nicholas gave rise to the Christmas character we know as Santa Claus. From a very early age I remember how my family celebrated December 6th as the Feast of Saint Nicholas; a reminder that Christmas is on its way and someone is watching us - from a distance - to be sure we stay on the nice side of naughty. On the night of December 5th each child put a pair of shoes outside their bedroom door. On the morning of the 6th there was a small gift in the shoes left by Saint Nicholas himself, reminding us to be of love a little more careful than anything else this season.Story Prompt: What one tradition or ritual do you continue at this time of year?  Who might it remind you of? What special meaning does it hold for you? Write that story and tell it out loud! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" A Prayer for Generosity Like the Wise Men

Your Daily Prayer Podcast

Long before Christmas lists, shopping carts, and wrapping paper, there were gifts given for one reason alone: worship. Sophia Bricker opens this devotional with the story of Saint Nicholas—a man whose quiet, selfless generosity became the seed of a much later legend. His life reflects the heart of someone whose giving flowed out of devotion to Christ, not cultural expectation. But even before Nicholas, Scripture gives us another unforgettable picture of joyful generosity: the wise men. The Magi traveled far, guided by a star and propelled by hope. When they finally reached the child Jesus, they didn’t debate whether the gifts were too costly or wonder if He “needed” them. They simply bowed in awe and opened their treasures. Their gifts were symbolic—and sincere: Gold for His kingship. Frankincense for His priesthood. Myrrh for His sacrificial death. But more than symbolism, their offering revealed their hearts. They gave because they loved. They gave because they believed. They gave because worship compelled them. Jesus later taught, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).Our spending, our giving, our serving—they all reveal what we value most. For the follower of Christ, generosity is not an obligation. It is an overflow. Like Saint Nicholas, we feel convicted when our resources center on ourselves. Like the wise men, we long to lay what we have at Jesus’ feet. Like those early givers, our generosity flows from beholding the Savior for who He truly is. And the way generosity looks will be unique for each of us. Not everyone gives gold or frankincense. Not everyone tosses gifts through windows. But every believer has something to offer—time, talent, resources, compassion, presence, or encouragement. Generosity begins with worship.Worship leads to open hands.Open hands lead to lives that honor Christ. Bible Reading:“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” – Matthew 2:10–11 (NIV) Takeaway Truths The wise men’s gifts were rooted in joyful worship, not duty. Generosity reveals what we treasure most. Followers of Christ give from abundance, not scarcity. True generosity begins with beholding Jesus. Let’s Pray Great Savior, I stand in awe of Your majesty and grace. How incredible it is that You, the King of all creation, entered this world as a humble child and chose to identify Yourself with us. The wise men saw what so many missed—Your worth, Your glory, and Your identity as the promised Messiah. They bowed in worship and gave freely, not from pressure, but from overflowing joy. Lord, develop in me this same heart of generosity. Help me to use my time, my resources, and my gifts to honor You. Guide my giving so that it reflects trust, gratitude, and devotion. Everything I have is from You. Make me courageous and joyful in sharing my life with others, so that my generosity points back to You, the Giver of salvation and life. Amen. Send us a textA storm-tossed sky lantern lands in a front yard with a daughter's message to her dad, and a simple response turns into a global moment of shared grief and hope. That story becomes our gateway into the real Saint Nicholas—an early Christian bishop who noticed the vulnerable, met practical needs with courage, and quietly changed lives in a collapsing empire. We sit down with author and screenwriter Matt Mikalatos to explore his devotional, Praying with Saint Nicholas, and the surprising history behind a figure too often flattened into myth. From Patara to Myra, we step through persecution under Diocletian, the pivot of Constantine, and the Council of Nicaea, where core beliefs were hammered out amid risk and conviction. We revisit the famous dowry rescue that inspired stockings, the confessor tradition that modeled reconciliation after failure, and the gripping moment Nicholas halted an unjust execution—mercy with a spine of steel.Threaded through it all is a practical Advent invitation: become a noticer. Pair 1 John 4:7–21 with small daily acts that restore dignity in your neighborhood. Slip generosity where it's needed, listen deeply to someone who feels invisible, and choose sustainable compassion that protects your mental health while expanding your capacity to love. We also clear up confusion around venerating saints, reframing it as asking trusted elders in the great cloud of witnesses to pray with us, not instead of us.If you're longing for an Advent that feels grounded, historic, and fiercely hopeful, this conversation offers both story and structure. Hope isn't a mood we chase in December; it's a promise with a name. We open the season by looking through Mary's eyes, where an ordinary day collides with God's faithful word and changes the story for every family that follows. From the angel's announcement to the echoes of Isaiah and Matthew, we trace how a centuries-old promise becomes deeply personal—shaping how we pray, parent, give, and wait when the details don't make sense yet.Host Tosha Williams shares how this promise threads through Scripture and into our kitchens, commutes, and crowded schedules, and why the book of Galatians calls us heirs to something bigger than holiday tradition. We talk about trust that moves like Mary's “be it unto me according to your word," as we balance between the honest tension of slow answers and second guesses. Then we ground it in practice with a simple tradition inspired by the real Saint Nicholas: giving early “promise gifts” that point to Emmanuel. Think small, meaningful tokens paired with Scripture to remind the people in your care that God keeps His word and Christmas is coming. This conversation is devotion-driven and practical. You'll leave with questions to ask God this week, Scriptures to hold, and an easy way to share hope with your people. If you're craving a Christmas that feels less frantic and more faithful, this is your on-ramp to seeing promise in the middle of ordinary life and letting your everyday kindness whisper His faithfulness.Find the coordinating devotion-driven discipleship guide HERE.If this episode resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend this holiday season, and leave a quick review so others can find these conversations. Which of God's promises are YOU holding onto this week?______________________The Family Disciple Me ministry exists to catalyze devotion driven discipleship in our homes and around the world. St Maxim was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1888. At this time all Orthodox Churches had been captured and subjected to the "Unia," by which, though keeping the Orthodox liturgical rites, they were united to the Roman Catholic Church. Many of the Carpatho-Russian people were ignorant of the change and what it meant; others were unhappy with it but, in their subject condition, saw no alternative. Maxim's farmer parents, at great personal sacrifice, obtained an education for him that enabled him to study for the priesthood at the Basilian seminary in Krakow. Here he discerned the un-Orthodox nature of the "Greek Catholic" training there and traveled to Russia, where he became a novice at the Great Lavra of Pochaev and met Archbishop Anthony (Khrapovitsky), who encouraged him in his quest for Orthodoxy. (Archbishop Anthony, after the Russian Revolution, became the first Metropolitan of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad). He entered seminary in Russia in 1905 and was ordained to the Priesthood in 1911.Metropolitan Anthony, knowing the hardships and persecutions that awaited any Orthodox priest in Austro-Hungary, offered to find Maxim a parish in Russia. But Maxim was already aware of the hunger for Orthodoxy among many of the Carpatho-Russian people; several people from his village had travelled to America and while there had attended Orthodox Churches and confessed to Orthodox priests. They begged him to return to his country and establish an Orthodox parish there.   When he returned to his native village of Zhdynia, the polish authorities, seeing him in the riassa, beard and uncut hair of an Orthodox priest, mocked him, saying "Look, Saint Nicholas has come to the Carpathians!" But the people of nearby Hrab sent a delegation asking him to set up an Orthodox parish in their village. This he did, setting up a house-church in the residence that the people gave him. Almost immediately, he and his people began to be harassed and persecuted, first at the instigation of "Greek Catholic" priests, then of the government. His rectory/church was closed, and he and several of his parishioners were repeatedly jailed, sometimes on trumped-up charges of sedition. (The Carpatho-Russian people were always suspected of pro-Russian political sympathies by the Austrian and Polish authorities).   Despite these persecutions, through Fr Maxim's labors a wave of desire for Orthodoxy spread through the region, with many Carpatho-Russians openly identifying themselves as Orthodox. The government issued orders to regional mayors to forbid those who had identified themselves as Orthodox to gather and, in 1913, appointed a special commissioner whose task was to force the people to return to Catholicism.   In 1914, war broke out between Russia and Austro-Hungary. Despite lack of any evidence that Fr Maxim had engaged in pro-Russian political activity — he once said "My only politics is the Gospel" — he was arrested and executed on September 6 by the Papal calendar, August 24 by the Church Calendar. He was denied any form of Church burial, and his father buried him with his own hands.   Following the First World War, Orthodoxy became legal in the new Polish Republic, and a monument was placed over Fr Maxim's grave in his home town of Zhdynia. In 1994, the Orthodox Church of Poland officially glorified St Maxim.

He's also co-authored Loving Disagreement with Kathy Khang — a timely, powerful book about how to stay in relationship, even when the culture says it's time to cancel. As an undergraduate student in creative writing at the University of California, Riverside, Matt studied under the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Percival Everett, author of the wildly popular novel entitled JAMES.  Matt's story doesn't stop there. He spent 20 years with a global campus ministry (Campus Crusade for Christ now known as CRU), lived in China, became fluent in Mandarin, and worked deeply in cross-cultural ministry. He's seen the evolution — or devolution — of Evangelicalism from the inside, and he doesn't shy away from talking about it. On a snowy evening in December 1823, a poem titled A Visit from St. Nicholas—better known as The Night Before Christmas—made its debut in the Troy Sentinel. The enchanting story of Santa Claus, a jolly figure flying in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, transformed how Christmas was celebrated, turning it into the family-focused holiday we cherish today. But who truly wrote it? While Manhattan professor Clement Clarke Moore claimed authorship in 1844, others argue it was Henry Livingston Jr., a poet from New York's Hudson Valley. This episode unravels the fascinating origins of the poem that gave us Santa's iconic image, the reindeer's thunderous names, and a heartwarming farewell: “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.” Grab your cocoa, hot toddy or irish coffee and cozy up next to the "fire" with Sean, Jorge and Eric.

As Christmas draws near, stories of generosity and the spirit of giving abound. Few stories, however, embody these virtues more powerfully than the life of Saint Nicholas. Behind the modern image of Santa Claus lies the legacy of a man whose life reflected the true meaning of Christmas—selfless love and sacrificial giving.Born around 280 A.D. in Patara, Turkey, Nicholas was raised in a wealthy Christian family. From an early age, he was taught to care for the poor and live out the teachings of Jesus. His parents modeled these values daily, planting seeds of faith and generosity in his heart.Tragedy struck early in Nicholas' life when an epidemic claimed both of his parents. Left orphaned but with a significant inheritance, Nicholas could have chosen to live in comfort. Instead, he embraced his faith, seeing his wealth as a tool to serve others and spread the love of Christ. The Secret Acts of KindnessNicholas became known for using his wealth to quietly help those in need. His most famous act of generosity involved a poor man with three daughters who were unable to marry due to their lack of dowries. Without this financial gift, the daughters faced the grim prospect of slavery.Moved by their plight, Nicholas secretly delivered a bag of gold to the family under the cover of night. He repeated this act twice more, ensuring all three daughters had a future free from poverty. When his identity was discovered, Nicholas humbly redirected the thanks to God, embodying Jesus' teaching in Matthew 6: “When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.”A Life of ServiceNicholas later became the Bishop of Myra, a role that allowed him to extend his mission of compassion and justice. Known for his love for the poor and his courage in defending the innocent, he risked imprisonment during the persecution of Christians and stood firm for the gospel at the Council of Nicaea. His life was defined by Christlike love. Through his actions, he reminded people that true wealth is not found in material possessions but in a personal relationship with God. His kindness pointed others to the greatest gift of all: Jesus Christ, who came to bring salvation and eternal life. After Nicholas' death on December 6th, 343 A.D., stories of his generosity spread across centuries. He became a symbol of selfless giving and was honored as the protector of children and the patron of sailors. Over time, his legacy inspired the modern figure of Santa Claus. But beyond the red suit and cheerful laughter lies the heart of Saint Nicholas' story—a life lived to glorify God through love and generosity. The True Meaning of ChristmasThe story of Saint Nicholas challenges us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. His life reminds us that the season isn't about extravagant gifts or seeking recognition. It's about embodying the love of Christ—a love that is sacrificial, humble, and freely given. As we exchange presents and celebrate with loved ones, let's remember that the greatest gift has already been given. Like Saint Nicholas, we can share that gift with others through acts of kindness, generosity, and encouragement. This Christmas, may his story inspire us to give generously, love deeply, and reflect the light of Christ in a world that desperately needs hope. After all, as Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”Let's celebrate this season by sharing the love that makes Christmas truly special. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm a 26-year-old newlywed looking to invest, and I'm wondering about your perspective on cryptocurrency—where you think it's headed in the future and if you're optimistic or pessimistic about it as an investment. My husband recently passed away, and I'm not 62 yet; I'm 61. What conversations can you have, actions can you take, or apologies can you make to love your neighbor like Christ?   Quotes to Ponder: The pierced heart of Christ embodies all God's declarations of love present in the Scriptures. That love is no mere matter of words; rather, the open side of his Son is a source of life for those whom he loves, the fount that quenches the thirst of his people. (Pope Francis, “Dilexit Nos”, Paragraph 101) Saint Augustine opened the way to devotion to the Sacred Heart as the locus of our personal encounter with the Lord. For Augustine, Christ's wounded side is not only the source of grace and the sacraments, but also the symbol of our intimate union with Christ, the setting of an encounter of love. There we find the source of the most precious wisdom of all, which is knowledge of him. In effect, Augustine writes that John, the beloved disciple, reclining on Jesus' bosom at the Last Supper, drew near to the secret place of wisdom. (Pope Francis, “Dilexit Nos”, Paragraph 103)   Scripture for Lectio:  “I led them with cords of human kindness, with bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.” (Hosea 11:4)   Sponsor - Leanne Bowen: Today's sponsor is Leanne Bowen Fine Art. We love her prints and her candles.
