Thomas poses the question of when do you talk nonnegotiable's in dating. [38:00] The relationship conversation wraps up for this episode, socials are given, and Thomas ends the episode with a toast to knowing yourself and being true to yourself. There’s a heartstopping moment in “for sonia,” Aja Monet’s ruminative elegy for the revolutionary poet Sonia Sanchez, when she recalls uttering the word “poetry” at a community organizing meeting, only to be met with flustered refusal. “Who’s got time for poems when the world’s on fire?” she asks, either quoting a naysayer or posing the question to herself. The answer, of course, lies in the poems themselves — especially as Monet embodies and delivers them in partnership with a corps of intuitive improvisers. We sat down with her in New York the morning after her 2025 Winter Jazzfest performance, to talk about poetic practice, political necessity, musical imperatives — and the fires that were literally consuming her adopted city of Los Angeles. The Harvard academic Elisa New is host of the much acclaimed PBS series POETRY IN AMERICA. Now in Season Four, the show has featured conversations about American poetry with Joe Biden, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Shaquille O'Neal, Bill Clinton and Al Gore. While America isn't normally considered a poetic nation, New's show has brought poetry into the homes of millions of Americans. So when I caught up with New, I asked her whether there was such a thing as an American poem and what it is about America that inspires memorable poetry. Elisa New is the Director and Host of Poetry in America, director of the Center for Public Humanities at Arizona State University, director of Verse Video Education, and Powell M. Cabot Professor of American Literature at Harvard University. New created Poetry in America, a PBS series, to bring poetry beyond classrooms into living rooms and onto screens of all kinds. The show can be seen on public television and streaming platforms, in schools and libraries, and on airlines. Guests include Joe Biden, Herbie Hancock, Gloria Estefan, Shaquille O'Neal, Elena Kagan, Nas, John McCain, Sonia Sanchez, Tony Kushner, Bill Clinton, Julia Alvarez, Bono, Cynthia Nixon, John Kerry, LisaGay Hamilton, Caroline Kennedy, Bill T. Jones, Katie Couric, and Al Gore and dozens of others. Alongside the PBS series, New produces educational materials on American poetry for all ages—from middle- and high-school students, to K-12 teachers, to lifelong learners—distributed by Harvard University, Amplify Education, and Arizona State University.  In her capacity as Director of the newly established Center for the Public Humanities at ASU, New will partner with ASU faculty and with partners from an array of other institutions to create relevant, engaging interdisciplinary content that extends beyond poetry: content that will broaden access to the highest quality learning experiences in the Humanities and adjacent fields. New is the author of The Regenerate Lyric: Theology and Innovation in American Poetry (Cambridge University Press, 1992); The Line's Eye: Poetic Experience, American Sight (Harvard University Press, 1999); Jacob's Cane: A Jewish Family's Journey from the Four Lands of Lithuania to the Ports of London and Baltimore: A Memoir in Five Generations (Basic Books, 2009); and New England Beyond Criticism: In Defense of America's First Literature, A Wiley Blackwell Manifesto (Wiley Blackwell 2014).Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. "My father said that when you look at the cultural traditions of people, the European cultural tradition is a generation makes a mask. They put it up on the wall, put a glass box around it, and they point to it and say that's the greatest mask that's ever been made. The African tradition is every generation makes their own mask. So what we see with this constant creativity, this constant improvisation is a very human, African, homo sapiens tradition of not taking something and classicizing it to the point that nothing can be created beyond it and the generations after just have to kneel. It's about moving the culture forward."  Raoul Roach My guest is Raoul Roach, the son of the iconic and internationally revered jazz musician, Max Roach. Born in 1924, Max was firmly entrenched in activism, civil rights, and the social justice movement of the sixties and seventies. As a result, growing up, Raoul had a strong interest in social activism, being exposed to and mentored by some of the most pivotal black figures of that period, including Maya Angelou, Sonia Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, and Alvin Ailey.Born and raised in New York City by age fifteen, Raoul was cutting his teeth working for his legendary dad, first as an office assistant, a roadie, and eventually Max's road manager, before ultimately producing several of his concerts. As a 40-year upper echelon executive of the music industry, Raoul has worked with the biggest names in entertainment from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Anita Baker. Raoul helmed the successful turnaround of Jones's Qwest Records as the organization's co-executive director.Raoul also co-founded and pioneered Harry Belafonte's social justice entertainment enterprise, Sankofa.org, as the organization's co-executive director along with Gina Belafonte. Raoul executed the recruitment of artists and celebrities such as; Usher, Jay Z, Beyoncé, Jesse Williams, John Legend, Common, Dave Matthews, Carlos Santana, Michael B Jordan, T.I., and many more in coordination with grassroots organizations and activists to produce, films, music videos, social media campaigns, PSA's, concerts and major festivals. These initiatives raised resources for non-profit organizations as well as awareness to impact social movement and social justice.Currently, Raoul is coordinating along with his siblings Max Roach 100, an 18-month international centennial celebration of his father's music and life that includes film, documentaries, social media, concerts, exhibitions, new and previously unreleased recordings. Experience the groundbreaking sounds of bebop pioneer and virtuoso composer Max Roach, whose far-reaching ambitions were inspired and challenged by the inequities of the society around him. "American Masters – Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes" premieres Friday, October 6 at 9/8c on PBS. A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST is the tale of a microphone, a meteorite and true love that transcends time! The story is set in a drive in/diner in Sylacauga, Alabama that famously shows the worst sci-fi movies ever made and boasts a small piece of a the actual Hodges meteorite that historically fell in 1954. When country charmer Gabby invites best friend Mo and her band THE FLUTTERBYES to perform, they plug in a vintage microphone once used by Elvis and it mysteriously opens a wormhole in space to send the cast back in time. Will Gabby learn hidden secrets of her family's past? Will Mo find love at first sight? How will the gang find their way back home to 2023? Running just under 90 minutes, A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST, is divided into four episodes (with ridiculous commercials) to allow fans to listen wherever and whenever they can.  THE CAST: • Comedy greats Dave Foley (KIDS IN THE HALL, NEWS RADIO, YOUNG SHELDON) and Gary Anthony Williams (RENO 911, THE OUTLAW JOHNNY BLACK, BOONDOCKS); • TV bad boy/hearthrob Antonio Jaramillo (MAYANS M.C., SHADES OF BLUE); • Broadway actresses Kacee Clanton (A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN) and Maureen Davis (INTO THE WOODS) • LA Theatre and Cabaret Favorites, Aaron Lyons (PULP SHAKESPEARE, THE DEVIL & BILLY MARKHAM) Crissy Guerrero (CESAR & RUBEN; EL VEZ) • All girl, all star sextet THE FLUTTERBYES (Maureen Davis, Sonia Sanchez, Claire Gohst, Paula Keane, Emi Desire, Roni Lee) whose collective concert credits include DICK DALE, BERLIN, VAN HALEN, JOAN JETT, BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY, DEKE DICKERSON, JAMES INTVELD and BIG SANDY). A FALLING STAR AT BUZZARD'S ROOST was recorded at Studiopolis in Los Angeles by Bryan Showalter and directed by veteran voiceover artist Richard Malmos. Custom Foley sound effects were designed by Jeffrey Gardner (The Kennedy Center, LA Theatreworks and Cecily Strong's lauded "Search For Sign's of Intelligent Life" at the Center Theatre Group). Maureen Davis composed the music with past bandmates from MAUREEN & THE MERCURY 5 and THE FLUTTERBIES. Davis has over 500 film/TV song placements to date, and two tunes from this musical -- "HUMMINGBIRD HEART" and FAITH IN RAIN" -- were featured in George Clooney's Oscar-winning movie, THE DESCENDANTS. A sample listening list can be found on Spotify here: https://spoti.fi/2Ecgu4L Davis cowrote the script with Dave Rodgers who also collaborated on “Valley of Kings,” with Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney (Murphy and Studney penned the stage/film musical REEFER MADNESS; Murphy co-wrote HEATHERS for Broadway). When not writing or performing in concert as a guitarist, Rodgers has been a long time assistant to Mel Brooks and the late Anne Bancroft. Support the show

What Things Cost: An Anthology for the People (UP of Kentucky, 2023) is the first major anthology of labor writing in nearly a century. Here, editors Rebecca Gayle Howell & Ashley M. Jones bring together more than one hundred contemporary writers singing out from the corners of the 99 Percent, each telling their own truth of today's economy. In his final days, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called for a "multiracial coalition of the working poor." King hoped this coalition would become the next civil rights movement but he was assassinated before he could see it emerge as the Poor People's Campaign, now led by Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II and Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis. King's last lesson--about the dangers of dividing working people--inspired the conversation gathered here by Jones and Howell.  Fifty-five years after the assassination of King, What Things Cost collects stories that are honest, provocative, and galvanizing, sharing the hidden costs of labor and laboring in the United States of America. Voices such as Sonia Sanchez, Faisal Mohyuddin, Natalie Diaz, Ocean Vuong, Silas House, Sonia Guiñansaca, Reginald Dwayne Betts, Victoria Chang, Crystal Wilkinson, Gerald Stern, and Jericho Brown weave together the living stories of the campaign's broad swath of supporters, creating a literary tapestry that depicts the struggle and solidarity behind the work of building a more just America. All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Poor People's Campaign. A mythic figure in the Southern California arts scene, Kamau Daáood is a performance poet, educator, and community arts activist. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he was instrumental in transforming Leimert Park into a cultural center and is widely acknowledged as a major force driving L.A.'s Black cultural renaissance. Kamau was a member of the Watts Writers Workshop and developed his style as a "word musician" with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, under the direction of Horace Tapscott. Over the course of hundreds of readings, his words have lifted audiences from their seats. He's shared a podium with Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, and Sonia Sanchez, and has read in Egypt and Somalia. In this episode, we discuss his passion, energy, and intensity as a poet and ambassador of arts and culture for the community in L.A., and his pride in contributing still to its vibrant traditions. We discuss jazz and what legends like John Coltrane, Billy Higgins, and Mr. Tapscott have meant to him and his journey, as well as his relationship with Juno Lewis—the master instrument-maker, vocalist, and percussionist who played on Coltrane's classic album Kulu Se Mama.

Sonia Sanchez, the poet, author, activist and scholar, arrived at Amherst in 1972 to build the Black studies department. Joining the College when it was still all-male, she was the first Black woman faculty member – a pioneer and revered mentor. Host: Nichelle S. Carr '98  Discussion topics: A brief history of Black studies on U.S. campuses New York's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and its impact on Sanchez The tragic story of Gerald Penny '77, namesake of the Black cultural center on campus, and its lasting impact on Sanchez and the Amherst community The decline and revival of Black Studies at Amherst College, including the road to becoming what is considered by some to be one of the strongest departments at the institution and in the U.S. Featured interviews (in order of appearance): Sonia Sanchez, who taught at Amherst from 1972 to 1975 Rhonda Cobham-Sander, now the Emily C. Poet and civil rights activist Sonia Sanchez joins Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh for a deep exploration of her poetry, the importance of spoken word, and her relationship with hip-hop music.   But this interview is more than a study on the power of words. Sanchez also dips into colorism, shares how she turned her personal struggles into triumphant pieces of art, and touches on the contentious relationship between art and the media.   Whether you're moved by words or actions, Sanchez is an interview that will deepen your thinking on the power of both in this must-listen interview. It also offers tremendous context for those who want to understand more about the era of conscious hip-hop.

Before coming to The Century Foundation, he was a reporter for the New York Times for thirty-one years, spending his last nineteen years there as its labor and workplace reporter, before retiring from the paper in December 2014. He is the author of Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, and Future of American Labor, published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2019. As the New York Times' labor and workplace reporter from 1995 to 2014, he covered myriad topics, including conditions for the nation's farm workers, the Fight for $15, Walmart's locking in workers at night, the New York City transit strike, factory disasters in Bangladesh, and Scott Walker's push to cripple public employee unions. Greenhouse joined the New York Times in September 1983 as a business reporter, covering steel and other basic industries. He then spent two-and-a-half years as the newspaper's Midwestern business correspondent based in Chicago. In 1987, he moved to Paris, where he served as the New York Times' European economics correspondent, covering everything from Western Europe's economy to the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. After five years in Paris, he served as a New York Times correspondent in Washington for four years, covering economics and the Federal Reserve and then the U.S. Department of State and foreign affairs. Greenhouse's most recent book, Beaten Down, Worked Up, looks at key historic episodes that built the nation's labor unions and shows how unions and worker power helped build the world's largest, richest middle class as well as a fairer, more democratic America. The book explains how the decline of worker power in recent decades has hurt workers and the nation, fueling income inequality and weakening the voice of workers in politics and policymaking.  The book also examines the future of the labor movement, looking at new forms of worker power, such as the Fight for $15, the #RedforEd teachers' strikes, and some innovative efforts to lift Uber drivers and other gig workers. A native of Massapequa, New York, Greenhouse is a graduate of Wesleyan University (1973), the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1975), and NYU Law School, from which he graduated as class valedictorian in 1982.
