When you push your limits and things get a little uncomfortable, you often learn something about yourself. When you repeatedly do it for years, we reckon you must learn some universal truths about humans and how we tick. As a professional adventure racer, Nathan has spent much of his adult life pushing his physical and mental boundaries and helping those in his racing team do the same. Hame came across Nathan watching World's Toughest Race on Amazon, which Nathan and the Kiwi team won by some margin. But it was the fact they did it with so little fuss that struck Hame and made him want to get in touch with Nathan. (It must have annoyed the TV producers so much that the winning team was seemingly doing it with no drama! Kiwi's don't get worked up enough to make good reality TV!) But beyond adventure racing Nathan has been an outdoor educator, team building consultant and event producer, helping people of all backgrounds safely push their limits in the outdoors. So, when he and his wife Jodie had kids they saw no reason to change things, and have been taking their kids on, in Nathan's words, “epic adventures” from a very young age. But this chat is not just for outdoorsy adventurey types, Nathan's wisdom can be universally applied. He explains how he tries to incorporate the same philosophies as captain of the NZ adventure racing team as he does at home - Offer respect and composure at all times, no matter what, to ensure that communication is always open. To have a strong team you need to know how people are feeling and no one opens up to an erratic yeller! Nathan also beautifully explains how his Samoan heritage helps him bring “Polynesian chill” to his parenting and problem solving, how he and his wife helped each other develop their own individual parenting styles, and how he fosters independence and freedom for his kids, while offering support at every step. Like all our great guests, Nathan is the first to admit he hasn't got it perfect, or even close. But as he says, your family is your most important team, and the commitment he shows to his is clear. We really loved spending time with Nathan, he's an inspirational guy and we can't thank him enough for taking the time to come over to Wellington and have a chat. (And his no questions asked cancellation clause in the event of good powder skiing was equally inspiring, and readily agreed to by us!) You can find out more about Nathan HERE. And if you like getting outdoors and still eating tasty food, check out Nathan's REAL MEALS - awesome tasting and nutritionally great freeze dried food for adventurers. And yes, they ship to Aus. You can get in touch with us at howotherdadsdad.com - we love to hear from you, and thanks to all of you that have written in. — And as always, big thanks to our friends at HERTZ. For this adventure across the ditch we took our kids and lots of gear, and to make our trip seamless and hassle free we used HERTZ. The pick up at the airport in Wellington was a breeze, the cars were sparkling clean, smelled great, the kids seats were pre-fitted and dropping it back was equally straightforward. This week Nicola and Di chat with the wonderfully talented Matilda Brown. Matilda is an actress, writer and director turned entrepreneur, who now spends her time running her meaningful and successful online business, The Good Farm Shop, with her husband Scott. They provide organic ready-made meals sourced from regenerative farms, which are delicious, healthy and ethical. Matilda is also the daughter of Australian acting legends Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, and we hear lots about their close-knit family in this beautiful interview. Matilda shares how she first became interested in regenerative farming, the difference between industrial and regen farms, and how she started a business with her husband during Covid, when she wanted to source ethical meat and the local butcher didn't know how to help. What started as a cow share, shifted and grew into the business they own today, providing delicious real meals with only the best ingredients. We hear about some of the funny mistakes they made along the way, including the realisation 18 months in that they weren't making any money. Whoops! We also hear all about Matilda's relationship with her parents, Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, and the incredible bond they share. You can tell from the way Matilda talks about them, that they truly are her role models and she has immense love and respect for them, not only as her parents, but as incredible humans. This episode is a really emotional one. Matilda was open and vulnerable and really feeling all of the emotion of the current plight of the world, so there were lots of tears shed in this interview. We are so grateful to Matilda for being so real and honest and sharing her beautiful soul with us. We hope you will love listening to Matilda as much as we loved talking to her. Feeding 9 Billion Podcasts: "The Haven Project" and "Food Secure Future"
Sophea is settling in at her job with the Real Meals company... even though she hasn't actually tried one yet. In the city, Sophea is the Outsider, because of her different mannerisms and the things she eats. Similar to northern Canada, it's difficult to access food in the city. The climate prevents year round produce farming, and fresh food must be shipped long distances to get there, leading to prices most can't afford. Real Meals evolved from this desperate need for nutritious, affordable, accessible food, and many in the city count on them for survival. But just what is a "Real Meal" anyway?
Feeding 9 Billion Podcasts: "The Haven Project" and "Food Secure Future"
Sophea grew up in Haven, but has always felt like she belongs somewhere else. After moving to the big city, she gets herself a job at Real Meals, an up-and-coming company working to combat food insecurity with quality food to meet people's needs and budget. But with her preference for fresh home-cooked meals over the pre-prepared and microwaveable Real Meals, Sophea finds she doesn't quite fit in.
Feeding 9 Billion Podcasts: "The Haven Project" and "Food Secure Future"
This episode takes a look at what life is like in a city not too far from Haven. Without the means to produce enough fresh food, residents of the city pay a premium for the fruits and vegetables imported from other parts of the world. Most people are living off of the more affordable processed food brand Real Meals. Desperate, two teens join a rebel group planning to steal food from the heavily guarded market where Haven is making a drop off.BACKGROUNDAccording to the 2020 PROOF report, drawing on data from Statistics Canada's Canadian Community Health Survey conducted in 2017 and 2018, 12.7% of all Canadian households had experienced food insecurity in the previous 12 months. In comparison, the following proportions of northern populations experienced food insecurity during the same time period:57.0% of households in Nunavut;21.6% of households in the Northwest Territories; and16.9% of households in the Yukon. This is partially due to higher food costs in these locations. High food prices in Canada's north are caused by a number of reasons, including higher costs of transportation, unreliability of food availability, and low puchasing power due to smaller populations and fewer grocery stores. A family in northern Canada would pay around double what a family in southern Canada would for the same amount and type of food!Learn more:Tarasuk V, Mitchell A. (2020). In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month — which is celebrated in May — Burger King is now offering Real Meals, a collection of meals for all of your moods. The Real Meals come in five different moods: Pissed Meal, Yaaas Meal, DGAF Meal, Salty Meal and Blue Meal. Burger King is launching the Real Meals in partnership with Mental Health America, a community-based nonprofit that addresses that needs of people living with mental illness, and promotes mental health for all Americans. “A natural extension of encouraging people to ‘be their way’ is encouraging them to ‘feel their way,'” a press release reads. “With the pervasive nature of social media, there is so much pressure to appear happy and perfect. With Real Meals, the Burger King brand celebrates being yourself and feeling however you want to feel.” According to the press release, the meals are only available while supplies last in select Austin, Seattle, Miami, Los Angeles and New York City locations. To purchase one of the Real Meals, just head to one of the participating locations and order a Whopper meal. All Real Meals include a Whopper sandwich, fries and a drink. www.burgerking.com Music granted for use with permission from and copyrighted by Phoebe Rose Music. Authentic Spirituality #2 Living in All of God’s Blessings, Eph. 1:3-14 By Louie Marsh, 5-5-2019 [NOTE: I’ve compiled a lot of information about this passage of scripture that I just can’t get into the sermon – it’s posted on my blog as an exegetical note – URL on back of outline. I plan on doing that for every sermon in this series] Intro – funny slide – then video then - The fast-food chain introduced a range of boxed deals it’s calling “Real Meals,” including the Pissed Meal, Blue Meal, Salty Meal, Yaaas Meal and DGAF (Don’t Give a F—) Meal as part of Mental Health Awareness Month in May. The deal includes a Whopper sandwich, french fries and a drink. “Burger King restaurants understands that no one is happy all the time. That’s why they’re asking guests to order a Whopper meal based on however they might be feeling,” 1) Every Spiritual Blessing Is Already Mine! 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, Ephesians 1:3 (ESV) I need to UNDERSTAND THIS. PLEASE NOTE: these are SPIRITUAL blessings – not physical, or material. As Chuck Smith said, this is church not an Amway meeting! [On Slide] I need to BELIEVE THIS. If this is true – THEN WHY DON’T I SEE THEM IN MY LIFE? - I have to grow into them, but they are mine, like child waiting to come of age to access his inheritance. I need to LIVE LIKE this is true. I need to PRAISE GOD for this! 2) Some of these Blessings are… I’ve been HANDPICKED by the Father to BE LIKE CHRIST! 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love Ephesians 1:4 (ESV) Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Ephesians 1:4 (MSG) God the Father PLANNED BEFOREHAND to make me PART OF HIS FAMILY! 5 he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, Ephesians 1:5 (ESV) having marked us out beforehand for adoption through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, Ephesians 1:5 (Darby) 11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:11-12 (ESV) How would your life be different if you foreknew everything? You wouldn’t have made all those bad choices would you? You’d only pick winners – and that’s what God has done – as long as I stick with Him I’ll WIN IN THE END! I receive God’s Grace FREELY 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight Ephesians 1:6-8 (ESV) So I’m… REDEEMED FORGIVEN LAVISHED WITH GRACE. I see God’s Purpose – INTEGRATION. 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:9-10 (ESV) I’m marked as GOD’S PROPERTY. 13 …were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:13b (ESV) The Holy Spirit is GOD’S DOWN PAYMENT on eternity. 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. Ephesians 1:14 (ESV) The Spirit is God's guarantee that he will give us everything he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. This is just one more reason for us to praise our glorious God. Ephesians 1:14 (NLT) HOW DOES ALL THIS BECOME MINE? 1) HEAR & BELIEVE the Gospel – the Word of Truth about Christ. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:13 (ESV)
