From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, which will probably take the cake as the longest movie title of the year, has FINALLY hit theaters. If you couldn't tell from the title, this is the LONG delayed John Wick spin-off starring Ana de Armas, which actually takes place between John Wick: Chapter 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4. It has, by the way, now been over two years since John Wick: Chapter 4 came out. Time flies, but that also means that my excitement for this film has just been waning and waning since it was announced. This expansion of the John Wick universe is probably one of the most baffling things I've seen from Hollywood recently. As interesting as the world of John Wick is, I still wholeheartedly believe that Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski's action directing is the draw of those movies. Add on top of my skepticism of turning everything into a cinematic universe all the news of this movie not really working and needing multiple rounds of reshoots, I went in skeptical. So, is Ballerina a worthy addition to the franchise? Find out in this review! From the World of John Wick: Ballerina:Directed by: Len WisemanWritten by: Shay HattenBased on characters created by: Derek KolstadProduced by: Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad StahelskiExecutive Producers: Kaley Smalley Romo, Louise Rosner, Kevan Van ThompsonMusic by: Tyler Bates, Joel J. This week, the boys discuss Wes Anderson's classic family black comedy, full of offbeat humor, rich detail, and fundamentally flawed characters trying to figure out their depressing lives. That sounds fun? How do they react to this surprisingly sad movie and could it possibly be the Greatest Movie Ever Made? The Royal Tenenbaums (2001) is directed by Wes Anderson and stars Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Luke Wilson.Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio
In Part Two of our episode, which isn't quite as packed as Part 1 (largely because it's a shorter, more straightforward story), we look at Wes Anderson's THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS, starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston and a half-dozen or so other people as their adult children and in-laws. At the start of the film, the family isn't hanging together very well, until a little bit of deceit brings them closer. Then it separates them again. Then...well, just tune in. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In Episode 87 we're keeping our focus on directors (heh), with two films that are semi-autobiographical in nature. We'll begin with MEAN STREETS (1973), directed by Martin Scorsese, and finish with DINER (1982), directed by Barry Levenson.

This series began with the story of a director who wrote his autobiography to secure his place in history after his career had gone down the drain. It ends with the story of a man who wrote his autobiography as a “dead man walking”...and then continued to make movies for another half a decade, until the literal last breath left his body. Hollywood's original “nepo baby” director, John Huston was never a conventional studio system stalwart, and in some respects he was able to go with the flow of changing times a lot better than some of his contemporaries. In part one of our two-part season finale we'll talk about his flight from Hollywood to Ireland, literally playing God, Huston's long fallow period in the late 60s, Anjelica Huston's misbegotten film debut, Huston's reinvention in the New Hollywood era and the health crisis that almost ended it all. This week, we're having a ball -- scrapping, yelling and mixing it up, loving every minute with this damn crew as we close out Gene HackMarch with a regal induction into the podcast canon. It's 2001's The Royal Tenenbaums, directed by Wes Anderson, co-written by Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson, and starring Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Danny Glover and the voice of Alec Baldwin. While Anderson launched himself to prominence with Rushmore, Tenenbaums marked the full-throated arrival of a confident new voice in American cinema, and arguably remains his best effort nearly two and a half decades later. Perfectly utilising Hackman's gruff hard-ass patriarcal screen presence, cut by the man's easily over-looked and ofter under-utilised comedic abilities, it's a redemption story for an almost historically bad dad -- a funny, feel-good movie that says it's never too late to make things right. Plus: Hayley's got another theatrical outing to report on as she headed to the cinema to catch Black Bag, while both hosts have food fixations on the brain this week. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, The Royal Tenenbaums is currently available to stream on Disney+, as well as Crave and Starz north of the border. Other works discussed this week include Presence, Kimi, Ocean's Eleven, Enemy of the State, The Conversation, No Way Out, Dirty Dancing, Step Up, Center Stage, Stranger Than Fiction, Arrested Development, Hard Eight, Sliding Doors, The French Dispatch, The French Connection, Isle of Dogs, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bottle Rocket, Asteroid City and Eastbound and Down, among many more. We don't know when we'll be back or what we'll be watching, as events in Hayley's life are making recording rather difficult over the next few months. But we will return, so don't fret! We just may be going down to a bi-weekly schedule for the next little while until things blow over. And don't worry, it's nothing bad. Updates coming on our social media feeds when we have them, but until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

It's comedy, it's drama, it's silly outfits are all on the table as the two explore ideas of legacy, found-family, and so much more.Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 37-minutes discussing the games Kathryn & Melvin are playing, including an "uglicy" in Sims 3 and reflections on over and decade of Call of Duty games. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Kathryn has seen more Wes Anderson movies than Melvin, and something about his style was getting to her. Melvin, however, really enjoyed the film.Melvin shares what resonated with him, contrasting it with what he felt The Royal Tenenbaums wasn't able to do a year ago.Steve Zissou is constantly thinking about his future, and is clearly ruminating on his past, and the film takes these things to task as it orients him toward his present. One's legacy is at the forefront of the film, and this is contrasted against nature's beautiful indifference.Kathryn, "...the emotional heart of this movie is definitely Ned."Discussing the ending, and why Melvin loved it so much.Recommendations:And Then We Grew Up: On Creativity, Potential, and the Imperfect Art of Adulthood by Rachel Friedman (2019) (Book)The Peanut Butter Solution (1985) (Movie) Support the showSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Twenty years ago on Christmas Day, Wes Anderson released his fourth feature film into the world. The star-studded Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou was not as an immediate hit as some of Anderson's other films but it's one that has aged incredibly well. Bill Murray leads a cast of phenomenal actors such as Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, and many others as the titular Steve Zissou on a quest for both revenge against the rare (and possibly fictional) shark that killed his partner and best friend, and his long lost dignity and relevance as an oceanographer and documentarian. As funny as it is, the movie also is about a man struggling against his mortality and seeking to repair his legacy. It's charming, exciting, funny, and deeply heartfelt. Whether you revisit this as an old favorite or are coming to it for the first time, we hope you enjoy! We are also thrilled to welcome Dan McCoy (The Flop House podcast, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) to discuss the film with us. Dan is a veteran writer, comedian, podcaster, and movie watcher and it was a wonderful time having him on to talk about one of his favorite films. Send us a textDo you remember the Addams Family from 1991? We remember it looking great; the cast was great and quite funny. But that was 30-plus years ago and we were just kids. Join us as we go back to the 90s and watch this family box office smash with a stacked cast and a look that made us think that Tim Burton himself made it. Was it a homage to the '60s TV series we watched on reruns after school or like many other '90s family movies, made with too much feel-good sappiness, that it makes it almost unbearable to watch? That would be a disservice to the 1st family of weird. Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Chelsea is joined by Jodie Sweetin (“Full House” and the “How Rude, Tanneritos!” podcast) to break down “A Paper Life,” by Tatum O'Neal, Hollywood's youngest-ever Oscar winner. This is perhaps the most intense memoir this podcast has ever covered!! And because it's 1970s Hollywood, there are appearances by Cher, Barbra Streisand, Anjelica Huston, Melanie Griffith, and—of course—Mick Jagger. Jodie reflects on her own experiences as a child star, while Chelsea yells at Oprah for trying to bring Tatum and her father, Ryan, back together. It's a film of profound beauty, humor and humanity, and although Gallo claims the movie is non-autobiographical, it nonetheless draws from deep reservoirs of personal experience in its depiction of alienation and the grace that can bring broken people back from the precipice. We discuss the career of Vincent Gallo and his status as perpetual provocateur, often exchanging barbs with fellow flimmakers and critics alike, including a notorious saga with the late Roger Ebert. Then, we talk about the film's depthful exploration of its thoroughly unlikable character as portrayed by Gallo, and how he manages to make Billy Brown a remarkably captivating misanthrope through his particular manner and distinctive speaking cadence. Finally, we discuss Gallo's recent foray into the MAGA movement and adjacent vestiges of the right, and why his work's portrayal of ecstatic revelation feels antithetical to the politics of resentment that defines the modern conservative movement.Follow John Semley on Twitter.
