Long day, but she say she enjoys doing the morning show, and enjoys Northeast Wisconsin. Parliament has given the green light to a new independent sport integrity commission focussed on athlete wellbeing and protection. MPs voted unanimously on Wednesday backing the creation of the Integrity Sport and Recreation Commission, which will be operational from next year as an independent crown entity. The Commission has a big remit. It will will develop the country's first ever Integrity Code - a kind of rule book for sport, and investigate any breaches of that code. It will also be a complaint and dispute resolution service, and will incorporate Drug Free Sport New Zealand and become the country's national anti-doping organisation. Sports Minister Grant Robertson says a central focus of the Commission will be on the wellbeing of participants and ensuring they have better support and protections to safely raise integrity matters. There have been a series of damning reviews into some of the country's elite sporting environments and bodies. One of the most significant was Cycling New Zealand and its treatment of Olympic cyclist Olivia Podmore, who died just over two years ago. Susie speaks with the chairperson of the Establishment Board, Auckland barrister Don Mackinnon and Olivia Podmore's mother, Nienke Middleton.
Parliament has backed legislation that will create a new independent entity to strengthen and protect the integrity of sports and recreation in Aotearoa. The Integrity Sport and Recreation Commission will begin on 1 July next year and focus particularly on the well-being of participants. First, News and Editorial Director Jessica Hopkins spoke to Barrister and Board Chair responsible for establishing the Commission, Don Mackinnon, about its purpose. MPs also voted on an amendment that ensures representation from the rainbow community, which will be included in the legislation. She also spoke to InsideOUT Kōaro Managing Director Tabby Besley about rainbow representation on the Commission.
News and Editorial Director Jessica Hopkins reports on the new Integrity Sport and Recreation Commission that MPs voted to establish, speaking to Establishing Board Chair Don Mackinnon and InsideOUT Kōaro Managing Director Tabby Besley. She also spoke to Dr Amanda Kvalsvig from the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago about how New Zealand could be permanently free of meningococcal disease. Beth spoke with Co-Director of the Public Health Communication Centre Aotearoa Professor Nick Wilson from the University of Otago about the lasting impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle six months on. Olivia spoke to Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Auckland Pharmacy School Dr Amy Chan about how climate change could be contributing to an increased risk of asthma attacks. She also spoke to Senior Law Lecturer at the University of Auckland Dylan Asafo about how ACT's pledge to abolish cultural reports could negatively impact our criminal justice system.
Anyone from top athletes..to coaches and weekend sports warriors can have their say on a new code that will basically form the rule book for sports and recreation in New Zealand. An Integrity Sport and Recreation Commission is on the way with its goal to protect the safety and wellbeing of participants and to promote fairness in competition. The legislation to create it ..is already before parliament, waiting on the select committee to report back. And a new code will set minimum integrity standards - but it wont be comuplsary for sports to sign on. Integrity Transition Programme director Rebecca Rolls represented New Zealand in cricket and football and she explains how the new model will help athletes.
