In this episode we discuss Martin Luther's theological breakthrough that set the stage for the Reformation. He did not set out to start a movement, but rather wanted to debate with integrity and honesty the malpractice of the Roman Catholic church. This desire led him down a path that pit him against the Catholic church, the Pope, and the Holy Roman Emperor himself. Luther's breakthrough reverberates through history until this day. Join us as we talk about his life, theology, and famous insults. There has been a steady stream of Protestants converting to Roman Catholicism in recent years, and many of these converts claim challenges with Protestantism itself. Darryl Hart is professor of history at Hillsdale College, and has recently written Still Protesting: Why the Reformation Still Matters. The book is a compelling work rising out of theological conviction, and it confronts the claims of these converts with the pressing question: “How do I stand right before God?” How would you counsel someone thinking about ‘going to Rome'? Join us, and hear what considerations Darryl says are of the utmost importance. In today's episode we tackle the wide world of dating. It's so wide we had to do two episodes and even then there's still so much to talk about. As married women now, we take a look at what dating was for us and how it could be for Christians. The four of us dated differently and that's ok! We all have our ideals and convictions that lead us to speak on the subject, but none of us claim to have THE answer in how to date biblically. We would all agree Christ Jesus must not be ignored and should dictate what parameters to set. It is wisdom issues such as these that make dialogue and encouragement among church women so vital to growth in every area of our lives. Hope you pass it along to your church family.Resources:Not Yet Married:The Pursuit of Joy in Singleness and Dating by Marshall SegalDating For God's Glory Part 1 by P.J. Chris Fabry and Ray Pritchard discuss why we celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
Today is known as Reformation Sunday where we remember that in 1517 a young monk named Martin Luther turned the world upside down when he posted 95 theses on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, decrying that God's church had lost her way, had abandoned her primary authority (Scripture alone), had forgotten the gospel (Grace alone by Faith alone in Christ alone) and the reason for the church's existence (God's glory alone). In 1521, Luther was summoned by the emperor to the Diet of Worms to renounce his views. Below is the prayer he prayed the night before his statement."O God, Almighty God everlasting! . . . How small is my faith in Thee! . . . Oh! The weakness of the flesh, and the power of Satan! If I am to depend upon any strength of this world – all is over . . . The knell is struck . . . Sentence is gone forth . . . O God! O God! O thou, my God! Help me against the wisdom of this world. Do this, I beseech thee . . . thy own mighty power . . . The work is not mine, but Thine. I have no business here . . . I have nothing to contend for with these great men of the world! I would gladly pass my days in happiness and peace. But the cause is Thine . . . and it is righteous and everlasting! O Lord! Help me! O faithful and unchangeable God! I lean not upon man. It were vain! Whatever is of man is tottering, whatever proceeds from him must fail. My God! My God! Dost thou not hear? My God! Art thou no longer living? . . . Thou dost but hide Thyself. Thou hast chosen me for this work. I know it! . . . Therefore, O God, accomplish thine own will! Forsake me not, for the sake of thy well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ, my defense.Lord – where art thou . . . Behold me prepared to lay down my life for thy truth . . . for the cause is holy. It is thine own! . . . I will not let thee go! No, nor yet for all eternity! Though the world should be thronged with devils – and this body, which is the work of thine hands, should be cast forth, trodden under foot, cut in pieces . . . my soul is thine. Yes, I have thine own word to assure me of it. My soul belongs to thee, and will abide with thee forever! Amen! O God send help! . . . Amen!"
Outline Why bother with the Reformation? What was the Reformation? Why it is still relevant? Introduction: Why bother with the Reformation? We are approaching the 500 year anniversary of Martin Luther nailing up the 95 theses, which have been named as the catalyst that started the Reformation. You may be asking the question, why does this matter, why should I give up my time to think about something old that happened 500 years ago? If you are a Baptist, an Anglican, a Methodist, Brethren, a Congregationalist, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Mennonite, Presbyterian, Independent, amongst many others in the Protestant stream, you exist because of the Reformation. The Reformation has been called the greatest revival and movement of the Spirit in the church since the book of Acts. Apart from the events of the life of Christ and the apostles there has been no other event that has so radically shaped the church. Here are just a few effects that you enjoy today because of the Reformation. Do you have a bible in your mother tongue? It was the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church to keep the bible out of the hands of the people because it could lead to everyone coming up with their own heresies, but the Reformers insisted that the believer aided by the Spirit could read and understand large parts of the bible. Do you sing songs in your worship services? In many medieval scenarios there were choirs who sang but not the people. Do you partake of both the bread and the cup when you take communion? This was hard fought over in the Reformation. Is there a pulpit and not an altar front and centre in your church? Do you have the public reading of scripture and a church service centring on God addressing His people through... Read More Source

How did we get from the early church in Acts, to the Roman Catholic Church of the Middle Ages, and then from Rome to the Reformation of the 16th century? Why should this matter to us today?
