On March 19th, 2014, school officials in Washington, DC went to a local homeless shelter to follow up on an 8-year-old student named Relisha Rudd due to her having missed more than two weeks of school. For several weeks, they'd reportedly been told by Relisha's mother that she was under a doctor's care. They were stunned to find out that the so-called doctor was actually a custodian at the shelter and that none of Shamika's family members had seen her for 18 days. Where was Relisha Rudd and who was the janitor that she'd seemingly disappeared into thin air with? TRIGGER WARNINGS: child abuse, grooming Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! Police commander. Since Larson ran the Homeless Children's Playtime Project, she assumed the call was related to her job. Around the time of the phone call, a 14-year-old girl has run away from the homeless shelter. This led to questions surrounding the degree of care the shelter has for its runaways. Larson was wrong, though. The commander asked if she knew that an 8-year-old was missing from her shelter. The Homeless Children's Playtime Project is an organization that works to create play areas for homeless children. Relisha Rudd — the aforementioned 8-year-old — was one of those children. Upon being told that she was missing, Larson was asked to send the police all of the information she had on Relisha. Emails confirm that Larson had provided the police with everything they'd asked for.“She holds such a special place in our hearts,” Larson said. “I think we owe it to her to not give up and to keep her picture and her story out there.”Support the show

Relisha Rudd would disappear from D.C. not in a typical way that 8 year old girls disappear. She would disappear slowly, first from school, and the homeless shelter, then weeks later all CCTV footage of the young girl would cease. It would be at this time that a janitor from the homeless shelter who had formed an inappropriate bond with the young girl would buy trash bags, lime and a shovel. Soon after he purchases these items police would investigate Relisha's disappearance from school, only to be led down a strange path, where the Janitor Khalil Tatum kills his wife Andrea, before later committing suicide, taking his secrets to the grave. Little Relisha Rudd knew more heartache and struggle in her 8 short years than most of us do in a lifetime. Despite her difficult circumstances, her family being impoverished and homeless, Relisha was a shining light of joyful innocence whose bright spirit could not be put out. Sadly, Relisha's own family did not do enough to keep her safe from a man who on the surface seemed kind and giving, but was hiding a darkness that would end in the deaths of two people, and Relisha never being seen again. This case is absolutely heartbreaking, but so important to remember and discuss. I hope you will join my cohost Joe and myself today in remembering little Relisha Rudd.

The story of the unsolved disappearance of eight-year-old Relisha Rudd is particularly tragic because, in her short life, she had already survived so much: Neglect, poverty, homelessness and a cycle of trauma within her family. Her mother, Shamika Young, grew up in foster care, struggled with behavioural issues and at one point even had to be placed in a mental facility. Now, Relisha was living with her mom, stepdad Antonio, and little brothers in an overcapacity homeless shelter. It was here that her mother would entrust her to the care of a shelter worker, a janitor named Kahlil Tatum, who had taken a special interest in the little girl. After Shamika handed her precious daughter Relisha over to this practical stranger, 30 days would pass before anyone noticed she was missing. It was the staff at her school who felt something was amiss when they were given a note from her mother stating she was absent due to health issues. Authorities would learn that the note signed by a “Doctor Tatum,” was actually written up by the shelter the janitor, Kahlil Tatum. An investigation into her whereabouts would reveal two sightings of Relisha had hotels in the area, where she was seen walking down the hallway with Tatum. On the same day an Amber Alert was put out for Relisha, Tatum's wife would be found shot dead. Shortly after that, Tatum himself would be discovered deceased from an apparent suicide - leaving everyone to ask the question, where was Relisha Rudd?10 years have passed since Relisha vanished. Her family remains hopeful that she is alive while police have stated this is now a recovery mission. In any case, it is time she is found and brought home. We're going to talk about the incredible little girl known as Relisha Rudd, the ways she was let down by basically everyone in her life, the details surrounding her disappearance and where the case is at today in 2024.Sources:https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/03/03/relisha-rudd-missing-decade-dc-homeless/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4MenKD07QAhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmAplZuIKQ8https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-family-homeless-shelter-beset-by-dysfunction-decay/2014/07/12/3bbb7f50-f739-11e3-a3a5-42be35962a52_story.htmlhttps://medium.com/@themissingfound/case-7-the-disappearance-of-relisha-rudd-d42a2c98379dSupport the showFollow me here:► YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@SerialNapper/► Twitter - https://twitter.com/serial_napper► Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/serialnappernik/► Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SerialNapper/► TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@serialnappernik Join the Serial Society true crime Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/serialnapperpatronOur Sponsors:* Check out Rosetta Stone and use my code TODAY for a great deal: https://www.rosettastone.com/* Check out True Crime Feed : https://thetruecrimefeed.com/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
