Episode Summary: In a justice system often obsessed with risk scores and compliance checklists, what happens when we stop and ask a deeper question: How have you survived? In this powerful episode, Joseph Arvidson sits down with Dr. Charlie Barnao, sociologist, ethnographer, and professor at the University of Palermo, to explore the hidden strength behind the stories of justice-involved individuals. Dr. Barnao spent 15 years living in a halfway house—not observing from the outside, but embedded in the day-to-day realities of those navigating the margins. His work on the Sociology of Survival offers a critical lens for probation, parole, and correctional professionals who want to truly understand resilience, identity, and change. Together, they dive into: What survival looks like in environments of exclusion and stigma How resilience and identity are built—and rebuilt—through supervision Why qualitative insights (real stories) matter as much as data points How the wrong labels can blur the professional lens—and harm outcomes Direct ties to the TIDES Supervision Model pillars of Resiliency, Identity, and Social Support This episode challenges listeners to see beyond behavior—to recognize survival as strength, and to partner with that strength to create real, lasting change. Whether you're a probation officer, trainer, policymaker, or simply passionate about justice transformation—this conversation will reframe how you think about your work. Guest Bio: Dr. Charlie Barnao is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Palermo (Italy), a scholar in cultural and communicative processes, and an ethnographer dedicated to exploring social marginality, survival, and resilience. His immersive research brings critical insights into how individuals adapt to exclusion and how systems can better support real transformation.   Key Topics Covered: Understanding the “Sociology of Survival” Lessons for probation and correctional practice Why language matters: Labeling Theory and client identity Building resilience and belonging through supervision Embedding hope and belief into justice work Connections to the TIDES Supervision Model pillars Connect with Joseph Arvidson:

Episode Summary:  In this thought provoking episode, host Joseph Arvidson sits down with Dr. Jerrod Brown to explore the complex factors contributing to false confessions and wrongful convictions. Dr. Brown, an expert in neurocriminology, offers insights into how various mental and physical health factors-such as untreated nutritional deficiencies and cognitive impairments-impact behavior, decision making, and the reliability of client interviews.  Together, Joseph and Dr. Brown unpack the vulnerabilities that can make certain individuals more susceptible to false confessions, from neurodevelopmental disorders and high levels of suggestibility to external pressures in the interview room. This episode challenges justice professionals to broaden their perspectives, looking beyond traditional frameworks like risk-needs-responsivity, to embrace a holistic view of client behavior. With practical implications for probation officers, correctional staff, and all who interact with justice-involved individuals, Dr. Brown's insights offer a pathway toward more effective, informed, and compassionate practices in the field. A criminologist is calling on the government to invest in addiction programmes to treat the causes of crime, rather than spending billions of dollars on locking more people up. The government has recently rolled out changes to sentencing, including encouraging the use of cumulative sentencing for people who commit offences while on bail, parole or in custody. It's the first step towards fulfilling National's Coalition agreement with New Zealand First. But those changes could cost billions and an alcohol and drug counsellor said all that money could be spent on rolling out more drug courts which are proven to reduce re-offending, Luka Forman has more.

Margaret Akullo is a Ugandan born British citizen, a Criminologist and a visionary with ethical leadership qualities. In her extensive career of three decades in international development she has led diverse teams delivering programmatic change and social impact in more than 20 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. In 2022, at the age of 55 and after more than three decades of work in various organizations, Margaret retired early from her job in the United Nations to embark on a journey of purpose and self-discovery and to craft her soul-led future career.  In this episode, Margaret discusses her path to becoming a criminologist and her interest in behavior from a very young age… wanting to study law at university but encouraged by her parents to pursue a business degree and continuing on to do marketing… starting a job with the Metropolitan Police in London and working there for about 15 years, first in a department dealing with finance… how her deep interest in studying behavior eventually led to a position working as a criminal intelligence analyst… pursuing a Master's Degree in criminology… working as a criminologist in various organizations and in five different roles in the United Nations, and being exposed to many diverse experiences and cultures around the world... traveling extensively and living in Thailand, Austria, and Ethiopia… the process of deciding to retire early after having an ongoing inner dialogue with herself about her unexpressed potential, and then coaching herself out of the United Nations… discussing her article, “Quitting Is Leading, Too” and her empowering leadership decision that led her to “deconstruct” the person she was and beginning a journey of transformation… asking herself who she was without her career and aligning with the core of who she truly was… taking the bold and courageous decision to quit her job at 55 years old… grieving the loss of her career but knowing this was part of her journey to reach her personal transformational goal… and this beautiful advice for us all about introspection, “I think it's important to shine the torch inwards as it leads to self-growth.” (Uganda, United Kingdom, Austria)

How does someone go from being a criminology major to rockin' the real estate world? How can you leverage one well-purchased condo into a real estate empire? Can a schedule make your life easier? In today's episode of Get Your FILL – Financial Independence & Long Life, Amy Terry shares the incredible trajectory of her professional life and some tips that can help you follow suit. Connect with Amy: https://amyterry.8z.com/ From Amy While I "started" my career at 16, I was reluctant to follow the path that, in retrospect, was unavoidable. I chased other passions, but it always led me back to Real Estate. A career in real estate has been such a huge gift to me. It has allowed me to grow, expand, get uncomfortable, and create generational wealth for myself. I believe anyone can create wealth in real estate regardless of their income level. Home ownership and investment properties are a game changer for an entire family. There is no get rich quick scheme here. It is smart, responsible investing that multiplies over time. And, sometimes, if you have the stomach for it, taking some big risks! I was also a reluctant leader, pushed into leadership roles. Today I could not be more grateful for that push. Helping agents build successful businesses has been a huge joy in my life. As well as learning to coach and mentor the whole person. Wealth and success have so many definitions and those definitions should ebb and flow and evolve as you grow and change as a person. I know I have also evolved as a leader. Learning to step into my own power, my own truth, and more recently my own femininity. My mentors and leaders had always been men, really wonderful men. But I found myself mimicking them and being who I thought I "should be" playing this masculine role. Once I got comfortable enough to try things in a way that felt authentic and true to me, it created a ripple effect of blossoming all around me. I then realized my gift as a leader is to create space for others to be who they authentically are. When I am not working you will find me traveling and exploring the world, practicing mediation, at a concert, at the gym, or a game night with friends.
