In this episode — Part 2 of our series on eating and PDA — I walk through the 10 misconceptions about eating that I personally had to unlearn in order to help my son. These are beliefs that are completely reasonable for most children and even most neurodivergent children, but do not apply to pathologically demand avoidant kids and teens. I cover why "kids will eat when they're hungry" isn't empirically true for PDAers, why behavioral approaches (even gentle ones) can backfire, why restricting sugar may not be the strategy you think it is, and why looking at eating in isolation misses the bigger picture of cumulative nervous system stress.I also share what the research does and doesn't tell us, where the methodology gaps are when it comes to neurodivergence, and what has actually changed in our home over the years. If the approaches you've been trying aren't working — or are making things worse — this episode is for you.Key TakeawaysPDA Kids Won't Just "Eat When Hungry" | 00:05:52 I explain how PDA is defined by a survival drive for autonomy and equality that consistently overrides other survival instincts — including hunger. Even when a child is physiologically hungry, the internalized demand of needing to eat, combined with cumulative nervous system stress, can make eating impossible.Behavioral Methods Activate the Nervous System | 00:09:20 I walk through why behavioral approaches to feeding — including gentle ones like sticker charts, food rewards, or even subtly positive facial expressions — can backfire with PDA children. Because PDA is rooted in threat perception tied to autonomy, any method where a parent or therapist is the "decider" can trigger a nervous system response that makes eating harder, not easier.Restrictive Eating Is a Symptom, Not the Problem | 00:14:33 I describe how restrictive eating is often a tipping point — a symptom of cumulative nervous system stress that has built up over weeks, months, and sometimes years. Rather than focusing only on what happens at the moment of eating, I explain why it's important to look at the full picture of a child's daily life and accommodate across the board.Sensory Strategies Alone Won't Transform Eating | 00:26:15 I share how sensory-based feeding approaches, even fun and play-based ones, can still backfire if there isn't enough autonomy built in. I use an example from my own son's feeding therapy to illustrate how the lack of autonomy around engaging in a sensory protocol was causing him to avoid even the activities he enjoyed.Sugar, Bento Boxes, and Family Meals Reconsidered | 00:31:09 I go through several misconceptions I personally had to unlearn — including the idea that sugar is the main enemy, that colorful bento box meals represent good parenting, and that home-cooked family meals at regular times naturally lead to healthy eating. I share how I came to think about these differently for PDA children, including what actually changed in my own home over time.Relevant ResourcesWhat is PDA - a foundational overview of PDA as a nervous system disability.Free Burnout Masterclass - understand the burnout that can make restrictive eating so challenging for PDA kids.Paradigm Shift Program® - our signature live program where we support parents to help their PDA children and teens through and out of burnout so their whole family can thrive.CitationsLove Me, Feed Me - book by Katja Rowell.Schaefer, Michael, et al. Produce Buzzers - A Podcast for Lovers of Fresh Fruits and Veggies
In this week's episode, we're turning our attention to a nut that has flown under the radar for far too long and one of the most unique and boldly flavored nuts in the world—the American black walnut. Unlike the mild English walnut most of us buy at the store, black walnuts grow wild, harvested, not from manicured orchards, but from trees scattered across backyards, farms, and forests throughout the Midwest and Appalachian states. They're one of the few truly wild-harvested commercial foods in the United States—a tradition that brings together thousands of local gatherers each fall. With their rich, earthy flavor and crunchy texture, black walnuts have a personality all their own, celebrated by bakers, chefs, and food lovers looking for something real, rustic, and full of character.Joining us to tell us all about them is Jacob Basecke, Executive VP of Hammons Products Company, a fourth-generation family business that has been harvesting, processing and promoting black walnuts for decades from the Ozarks in Southern Missouri. We'll dig into what makes black walnuts different from the English walnut – from flavor to nutrition, sustainability to wild-harvest tradition. We'll explore how Hammons works with thousands of harvesters in the Midwest, how their crop fits into today's consumer and foodservice markets, you can make the most of this bold, wild nut.
Step into one of the most fascinating reincarnation cases ever recorded: a four-year-old boy in Oklahoma who vividly remembers life as an Old Hollywood tap dancer turned talent agent. Dozens of his memories later proved uncannily accurate — Broadway and film performances, a Beverly Hills home, glamorous nights with Rita Hayworth — and together they raise striking questions about memory, identity, and the paranormal in a way that even skeptics struggle to dismiss. Plus, Sabrina shares her own unsettling experience after tempting the spirits of Greyfriars Kirkyard. Watch the video version here. Have ghost stories of your own? Welcome to Supreme Court Opinions. In this episode, you'll hear the Court's opinion in United States Trustee v John Q. Hammons Fall 2006. In this case, the court considered this issue: Must the U.S. Trustee issue refunds for the extra fees paid by debtors in certain districts to address the lack of uniformity identified in Siegel v Fitzgerald? The case was decided on June 14, 2024. The Supreme Court held that refunds are not required; rather, prospective parity—i.e., requiring equal fees for otherwise identical Chapter 11 debtors going forward—is the appropriate remedy for the short-lived and small disparity created by the fee statute held unconstitutional in Siegel v Fitzgerald. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson authored the 6-3 majority opinion of the Court. To determine the appropriate remedy, the Court considers what Congress would have intended had it known about the constitutional problem. Congress has demonstrated a strong commitment to keeping the U.S. Trustee program self-funded through user fees, as evidenced by the 2017 fee increase and the 2021 Act maintaining elevated fees. Providing refunds would significantly disrupt the statutory scheme by transforming the self-funded U.S. Trustee program into a $326 million bill for taxpayers. It would also likely exacerbate the existing fee disparity. Moreover, Congress chose not to impose higher fees retroactively on Bankruptcy Administrator districts when it amended the fee statute in 2021, indicating it did not intend such a remedy. Thus, Congress would have wanted prospective fee parity, which is what Congress itself implemented in the 2021 Act. Justice Neil Gorsuch authored a dissenting opinion, in which Justices Clarence Thomas and Amy Coney Barrett joined, arguing that the Court's decision undermines the importance of constitutional remedies and may have far-reaching negative consequences beyond the bankruptcy context. Justice Gorsuch would conclude that under traditional remedial principles, Hammons should receive a refund for the unconstitutional fees it paid. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted. If you appreciate this episode, please subscribe. As if there is a playbook for writing poetry, guidelines, and steps. All month long you listen to me and me alone on this podcast. But early on I determined to let you listen in once a month as I sit at the feet of others. The results are some of my favorite episodes of all. That certainly includes my conversation with Keith Stonehart and Paul Hammons, which wraps up today. We wrap up by talking about the game of solitaire some of our brethren seem determined to play and why they should pay the price, however painful, to join up and play with the rest of us. We're back with Keith Stonehart and Paul Hammons, talking about the number one. Keith works with the Fultondale church of Christ in the Birmingham, Alabama, area. Paul works with the Graham church of Christ in north Texas. In this segment, we're discussing the benefits, and especially the dangers, of obsessing over a single thing. Is it possible to focus too much on a single thing — even if that thing is Jesus Christ? Let's find out. We're talking about numbers this month on the podcast, and we're starting with the number 1, which seems appropriate. Keith Stonehart joins from the Birmingham, Alabama, area. He preaches for the Fultondale church of Christ. I've never met Keith in the flesh, but he's good friends with my other guest whom I've known for all his life and almost all of mine. Paul Hammons preaches for the church of Christ in Graham, Texas, and is widely considered “the smart one of the family.” Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. This week, Editors Don Williams and Nic de Sena discuss the new Moto Guzzi Stelvio. It has been around eight years since Moto Guzzi updated the Stelvio, and so expectations were quite high when Nic went to the launch in Spain. Don chats with Nic about his experiences with the new Stelvio, and whether this new version is now a credible ADV bike. In the second segment this week, Associate Editor Teejay Adams chats with Ray Hammons. Despite his mature age, a couple years ago Ray realized a long time dream—to learn to ride a motorcycle. To say that he jumped in with both feet is somewhat of an understatement. Ray was fortunate enough to attend the YCRS Champ Street School when he first got his license, and interestingly, he credits the school with saving his life almost immediately. The topic of whether you should cover the brake when riding is actually quite controversial, and if you do it during an MSF course, you will fail. This is patently wrong, and Ray is clearly hoping the right people wake up, and this change is made to rider training across the country. We love your feedback! Gretchen Whitmer, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor), U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) and other Michigan leaders at the UAW union hall in Warren in Macomb County to celebrate the union's accomplishments in the last year and its endorsement of Biden's reelection campaign.Biden told UAW members “Supporting you is the easiest thing I've ever done. The single biggest reason why we have unions growing, the single biggest reason the economy is growing … because you are the best workers in the world.” Michigan is expected to play a key role in the November general election, as Biden looks to win the state again. This is the second time in recent months that Biden has come to Michigan to talk with UAW members. He became the first sitting U.S. president in modern history to visit a picket line in September during a historic strike against Detroit's “Big Three” automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis. UAW President Shawn Fain announced the union's endorsement of Biden's campaign on Jan. 24 and drew a sharp comparison between Biden and GOP frontrunner former President Donald Trump.“Rarely as a union do you get so clear of a choice between two candidates. It's not about who you like, it's not about your party, it's not about this b—–t about age. It's not about anything but our best shot at taking back power for the working class.”In September, Trump also traveled to Michigan during the UAW strike, but he visited a non-union plant in Macomb County where he advised the UAW to endorse him for president.Trump said, “Shawn, endorse Trump and you can take a nice two-month vacation, come back, and you guys are going to be better than you ever were. The other way, you won't have a vacation, Shawn. And in a short period of time, you're not going to have a union. You're not going to have jobs. You're not going to have anything.”“Trump is a scab,” Fain said recently. “Donald Trump stands against everything the UAW stands for. When you go back to our core issues — Wages. Retirement. Health care. Time. That's what this election is about,” Fain said. “Instead of talking trash about our union, Joe Biden stood with us.”By November, the UAW ratified new contracts with all three companies that included significant worker raises, an end to the tiered wage system and improvements to the automakers' retirement benefits. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said Biden is a “jobs president,” “Under President Biden, we've seen 14 million jobs created, including 800,000 manufacturing jobs, which is more than any president in a single termBiden wrapped up his time at the union hall calling Whitmer “the best governor in the country” and Dingell a “fighter.” To the UAW Workers in Warren he said, “Thank you and the whole country owes you,” Biden said to the UAW workers in Warren. “You're not only helping auto workers, you're helping every worker in the world.”Oklahoma Teachers Likely To Keep Bonus Moneyhttps://oklahomavoice.com/2024/01/31/oklahoma-teachers-may-not-have-to-return-errant-bonuses-walters-says/OKLAHOMA CITY — State Superintendent Ryan Walters said Wednesday errant bonuses his administration paid to educators might not have to be clawed back.In a press conference he called to accuse reporters of lying about the situation, Walters said the Oklahoma State Department of Education is coordinating with the teachers who wrongly received signing bonuses to find another solution. He said that could include longer contractual commitments in exchange for keeping the money.“There is a path forward that does not require a payback from those teachers,” Walters said. But at least one affected teacher got no such promise, her attorney, Mark Hammons, said.Oklahoma County teacher Kristina Stadelman heard from the state agency in the past two days, informing her a Feb. 29 deadline for repayment no longer applied, Hammons said. But that included no guarantee she would never have to repay the bonus, he said, and that's why she joined a lawsuit on Wednesday to challenge the demand.“They extended the time for the deadline and said they were looking into other possibilities,” Hammons said. “We don't know what that means, and they didn't explain that to her, but they certainly made no promise that she wouldn't have to pay back all or any portion of that money.”Both of Hammons' clients, Stadelman and Osage County teacher Kay Bojorquez, said they were awarded $50,000 bonuses in the fall from a teacher recruitment program Walters created last year. Colorado's New Coal Mine… Maybehttps://coloradonewsline.com/briefs/environmental-groups-epa-colorado-coal-mine/Conservation groups are asking EPA to block permit for new coal mine in coloradoTwo conservation groups have formally petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to intervene in state air-quality regulators' decision to issue an operating permit to Colorado's largest remaining coal mine.Colorado's Air Pollution Control Division issued the permit to the West Elk Mine in Gunnison County in December, more than six months after a federal judge's ruling that the agency had illegally delayed its decision on whether to approve or deny the permit, which a subsidiary of mine owner Arch Coal first applied for in 2020.But two of the groups involved in that litigation, the Center for Biological Diversity and WildEarth Guardians, call the permit issued by the APCD a “free pass” that doesn't do enough to limit emissions of volatile organic compounds, a class of hazardous air pollutants, or methane, a powerful greenhouse gas.Iowa Lawmakers Keep Protections for Gender Identity In Law… after considering taking it awayhttps://iowacapitaldispatch.com/2024/01/31/iowa-house-lawmakers-reject-bill-to-remove-gender-identity-protections-from-iowa-civil-rights-law/Protection of “gender identity” under the Iowa Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in areas like employment, housing, education or public accommodations. Under the proposal, a diagnosis of “gender dysphoria or any condition related to a gender identity disorder” would be classified a disability under Iowa Code – another protected class under the civil rights act.Aime Wichtendahl, a Hiawatha City Council member, criticized lawmakers for considering legislation that would make Iowa the first state in the country to remove civil rights protections for a group of citizens. Missouri Speaker Plochs Another One Into The Bowlhttps://missouriindependent.com/briefs/embattled-missouri-house-speaker-dean-plocher-dismisses-another-top-staffer/Embattled Mo House Speaker Dean Plocher has lost another staff member https://missouriindependent.com/briefs/embattled-missouri-house-speaker-dean-plocher-dismisses-another-top-staffer/Missouri House Speaker Dean Plocher fired his legislative director Wednesday, the latest in a series of departures from his office as he continues to face an ethics investigation into allegations of unlawful conduct. Erica Choinka had worked for the Missouri House since 2016, first as a legislative assistant and then as legislative director for former Speakers Elijah Haahr and Rob Vescovo. She continued to serve under Plocher until Wednesday, when she was fired. Choinka declined to comment, and a spokesman for Plocher did not immediately respond to an email about the dismissal. The staff shakeup follows the firing of Plocher's chief of staff in October and the resignation of his chief legal counsel in November. And it comes as an ethics inquiry into his alleged misconduct enters its fourth month. The investigation was launched late last year after The Independent reported that Plocher on numerous occasions over the years illegally sought reimbursement from the legislature for airfare, hotels and other travel costs already paid for by his campaign. In each instance, Plocher was required to sign a sworn statement declaring that the payments were made with “personal funds, for which I have not been reimbursed.”Finally… In another story out of Missouri, sorry, that's Kansas, no wait, my bad from Iowa, oh, nope, that's Oklahoma… wait, Indiana, or… was this Ohio? Ah, I see now - from Kentucky…GOP supermajority: Silly, unserious, unconcerned by Kentuckians' real problemsAuthor: Teri Carterhttps://kentuckylantern.com/2024/02/01/gop-supermajority-silly-unserious-unconcerned-by-kentuckians-real-problems/On Jan. 31, I began my day reading a story that opened with a stunning sentence. “Some residents of a county in Kentucky are going on two weeks without running water, forcing them to use public toilets and catch rainwater to bathe.”As I was reading this news, a 7:31 a.m. tweet popped up from Rep. Josh Calloway. “Actually, what it means to be a good parent is to tell your children the truth. The truth is men are men, women are women, and neither can become the other. The truth is, they were not born in the wrong body, they are perfect just the way God made them. It is Evil to lie to children.”Yes, this is anecdotal, but it is also reflective of a maddening reality. We are one-third through the all-important budget session of our 2024 General Assembly, and the GOP supermajority in Frankfort is wasting their days focused on problems we do not have and, well, sex. Dominique Hammons, a young and talented violinist with unshakable faith and a praying family has taken him to heights he's only imagined and it's just getting started! In about 2019 I was on a social media platform just scrolling through and I see a young man playing this violin to current music in all genres! I thought, who is this?? He's going far! After that, I began to follow him and just like I thought, I began to see him play at multiple places and now I believe it's safe to say, he's a household name! Dominique picked up his violin early in life and his grandmother (a very integral part of this story)encouraged him to keep God first and continue to practice. With her advice he began playing in front of different audiences and even sharing his gifts by teaching children. Later on, his manager,Jonathan Young (CEO of JPRG Radio) convinced Dominique to set his eyes on the prize, get his passport and boldly walk into his calling! Hammons, took time out of his schedule to share with me (and you) how staying on the path, prayer and practicing until you see the progress with results will lead you right where you're meant to be! Although it was bittersweet to leave his students, he's extremely proud that they now have a blueprint of what it physically looks like to walk into your purpose! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/quisha-king/message

Meekness has come to mean weakness or passivity in our modern vernacular. But that's not what it means in the Bible. And it's not what it will mean here for the next 20 minutes. This week we will discuss the difference between the strongest man in human history and a muscle-bound oaf from the book of Judges; the frustratingly nice words from a Hall of Famer; the boastfulness of people who have done very little to boast of; and the friendliest competition in Hammons family history Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. We brought someone new into the Hammons family recently; my daughter Taylor married a fine Christian man, and we are thrilled to put an extra chair at the game table for him. But his experience with gaming is very different from ours. We want him to be part of our lives, but we want him to feel comfortable in making the transition. Dice Town was a good choice for Jake. It's not quite the same as playing poker with dice, but close enough for him to understand it quickly. He was beating me in no time at all — not that that's any great accomplishment. What are some methods you used to incorporate adopted children into your families? And how can we make those principles work for fresh-out-of-the-water brothers and sisters in Christ? True or false: Positive feelings towards aging can increase your life by up to 8 years longer. Our guest from Wyoming is practically shouting from the rooftops, "IT'S TRUE!". If you blame things on your age and feel diminished in your daily living, it can literally shorten your life. The secret to embracing getting older? Surrounding yourself with solid relationships, practicing gratitude, and admiring the modern miracles of life. Deborah Healy Hammons, Consultant, Creative Writer, former PBS TV Producer, and former Minority Whip for the Wyoming House of Representatives, has a knack for seeing beauty all around her, even in mundane tasks. In our conversation, Deborah likened driving in rush-hour traffic to seeing a flock of birds communicating in sync. We may all have our own responsibilities and meetings to attend, we're all genuinely heading in the same direction, same flow of traffic. She even shares her love for having a real, live person helping her check out at the grocery store over scanning at the self-checkout line because it allows her to bond with the person standing before her. When people generally try to avoid such arduous tasks, Deborah fully embraces them. When it comes to living happier, more fulfilling lives, Deborah shares that appreciating the world's beauty allows us to cultivate a positive mindset and embrace the joy of living in the moment. And while we can't stop the world from turning and stop ourselves from getting older, we can simply age gracefully. Topics Discussed: How to implement positive aging The relationship between our feelings and how they contribute to longevity Creating a healthy environment to thrive The importance of social networks and connecting with others Why we want to feel valued (and how to value others) How driving in traffic is like a flock of birds in communication. This week we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Kila Baldwin of Kline and Specter, PC (https://www.klinespecter.com/) Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review Episode Details: A Philadelphia attorney with a strong track record leading complex cases against medical device manufacturers, Kila Baldwin of Kline and Specter, PC discusses the high-profile trial in which she represented Ella Ebaugh, a woman who sustained lifelong injuries due to defective transvaginal mesh implants designed by Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. In her 40s, Ella was diagnosed with stress urinary incontinence, which caused her bladder to leak unexpectedly. She was implanted with a TVT-Secur and TVT sling and later endured three mesh removal surgeries because the mesh had eroded into her bladder and urethra. Today, Ella is incontinent, wears adult diapers and suffers from frequent urinary tract infections. Using Ethicon and Johnson & Johnson's actions against them, including statements made in internal emails, Kila Baldwin was able to successfully persuade the Philadelphia jury to decide in favor of Ella. In 2017, the jury returned a verdict of $7.1 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages, citing Ethicon and Johnson & Johnson's negligent design of the products and willful disregard for patient safety.
