She'd been tried and convicted of capital murder in the death of her two-year-old daughter, Mariah Alvarez. On February 17th, 2007, first responders were called to Melissa's home to find Mariah in cardiac arrest. Despite resuscitation efforts, Mariah was pronounced dead at the hospital. She was found covered in bruises, with a cause of death ultimately determined to be from a significant head injury. Melissa had no documented history of abuse, but before investigators had even left her home that night, they'd formed their opinion of what happened, despite Melissa's explanation. Since her sentencing, people across the world have been lobbying on Melissa's behalf, petitioning for a stay of execution and, hopefully, a full exoneration. Was Melissa wrongly convicted and sentenced to death or was she responsible for the death of her youngest child? On April 19th, 1993, FBI agents began pouring tear gas into a compound known as Mount Carmel in Waco, Texas. It was the final act of a 51 day standoff that had taken place between law enforcement and a religious group known as The Branch Davidians. After a failed attempt by the ATF to serve a warrant to arrest the group's leader, David Koresh, for stockpiling illegal weapons, the standoff began. By the end, 82 Branch Davidians were dead, including 28 children, and four ATF agents had been killed. On Memorial Day weekend of 1990, 40-year-old Marlene Warren heard the doorbell ring in her Palm Beach County home. When she opened the door, she was delighted to find a clown standing on the porch, holding two balloons and a basket of carnations. The clown handed the gifts to Marlene, then pulled out a gun and shot her in the face. Two days later, Marlene died in the local hospital, with nobody understanding who hated Marlene so much that they'd commit such a horrific crime. An investigation that spanned 27 years would finally reveal who'd painted their face in white clown makeup that day and murdered Marlene Warren in cold blood. On a Monday in May of 2005, deputies in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho responded to a call at the Groene residence. When they arrived, they found blood covering the walls and floors of the home. The bodies of the mother, Brenda, her boyfriend, Mark, and Brenda's 13-year-old son, Slade, were lying on the living room floor, clearly victims of a vicious attack. A triple murder was unheard of in the small Idaho town. As they looked around the rest of the home, detectives realized that the two youngest Groenes, 8-year-old Shasta and 9-year-old Dylan were missing. There was no sign of the two anywhere on the property or in the surrounding area. Less than two months later, a waitress at a local Denny's called 911 because she believed that Shasta was sitting in her restaurant. Police arrived to find the missing girl and her abductor, who was arrested immediately. But who was this man who'd committed a triple murder and a double kidnapping? It couldn't have been a first time offender. Most importantly, where was Dylan Groene? On Friday, December 27th, 1985, 28-year-old Deborah Ann Wolfe didn't show up to her job as a nurse at the Fayetteville, North Carolina Veterans' Medical Center. Her mother was immediately concerned and reported her missing. The young nurse was found less than a week later, dead in the pond outside of her cabin. Her death was ruled accidental, but Debbie's family, friends, and much of the community believe that she was the victim of murder. Inconsistencies in the investigator's theory of what happened left Debbie's loved ones wondering if evidence of a murder was intentionally being overlooked. Leon Benson spent more than half of his life, a total of 24 years, in an Indiana state prison for a murder he didn't commit. Despite the lack of physical evidence and a questionable eyewitness identification, he was convicted. But new realities start to come to light when attorney Lara Bazelon takes up his case and is determined to secure Benson's release. Season three of Suspect, co-produced by Campside Media and Wondery, delves into the flaws in the criminal justice system that led to Benson's wrongful conviction for the 1998 shooting of Kasey Schoen in Indianapolis. The investigation aims to uncover the truth about who really committed the crime and why the eyewitness testimony that led to Benson's conviction was so shaky. Host Matthew Shaer joins co-producer and writer Bazelon to take a deep dive into the nature of memory and how it can be fallible and result in an innocent man's life being wasted, while the real perpetrator remains unpunished. As the investigation unfolds, will Bazelon and her team gather enough evidence to free Benson? And what will happen to Schoen's real killer? Listen to Suspect: Five Shots in the Dark early and ad-free on Wondery Plus. Find Wondery Plus in the Wondery App or on Apple Podcasts: https://wondery.app.link/Suspects3_KQ
After a fight with his wife, Melanie, Bill McGuire went missing. Friends and family were concerned, but Melanie never reported her husband missing. After about two weeks of not seeing or hearing from Bill, Melanie was informed that her husband was deceased and his body had been found in three separate suitcases in the Chesapeake Bay. After months of investigation, Melanie was found guilty of her husband's murder solely on circumstantial evidence, but to this dayl maintains her innocence. Many people believe she was wrongfully convicted. The question would then remain, who killed Bill McGuire? On Saturday, March 1st, 2008, the Caffey family home in Emory, Texas was engulfed in flames. Terry Caffey, the father, had been shot five times and had amazingly escaped the burning home and crawled 500 yards to his neighbors' house, where 911 was called. Firefighters found the burned remains of 38-year-old Penny Caffey, 13-year-old Matthew, and 8-year-old Tyler. Still missing was 16-year-old Erin. Terry was immediately rushed to the hospital and into surgery. Once Terry was in recovery, a Rains County Sheriff told him that his only daughter was alive and well. Unfortunately, Terry's relief that Erin was safe was short-lived. The Sheriff also told Terry that she was in custody for being involved in the murders. He was stunned. There was no way that his daughter had anything to do with this. However, Terry, and the rest of the community, were shocked to find that the evidence against Erin was overwhelming. The graduates decided to go out with a bang on their last night on the island and went to a popular bar to have some fun and some drinks as the legal drinking age there is 18. Natalee was seen leaving the bar with a few local boys and was never seen again. It's been 18 years and neither Natalee nor her remains have been found. On a warm Friday evening in June, in the small town of Alma, Arkansas, 6-year-old Morgan Nick left the bleachers of a Little League baseball game to go catch fireflies with her friends. Her mother watched as she ran into the parking lot and played. Less than half an hour later, Morgan was gone. Two witnesses, ages 8 and 10, saw Morgan stop to get sand out of her shoes, while a man in a red truck watched. She hasn't been seen since. What happened to Morgan Nick and where is she now? Overview of the case in case you don't know: On the night of June 7, 2021 Alex Murdaugh called 911 to report that he had come home to find his wife and son “shot badly.” His wife Maggie and son Paul were found dead on the family's sprawling property named “Moselle.” They were found at the property kennels which were about ⅓ mile away from the main house. Both were shot multiple times; Paul was killed with a 12g shotgun and sustained 2 gunshot wounds: to his head and shoulder. This is gruesome but true- his brain was “blown out” of the right side of his head, completely severing his brain from his skull. Maggie was shot with a .300 Blackout AR-style rifle 5 times; through the left wrist, left thigh, her upper abdomen through the lower back, and a downward-trajectory shot to the right back of Maggie's head. Alex Murdaugh has maintained his innocence since the murders and stood trial in early 2023. This episode recaps the trial and the verdict. On the morning of July 10th, 1981, shots rang out in the small town of Skidmore, Missouri. Outside of the D&G Tavern, the engine of a truck could be heard roaring to life, until it gave out, and eventually the engine blew. In the truck was the body of Ken Rex McElroy, who was known in Skidmore as the “town bully.” Incredibly, with dozens of people surrounding the truck when the shooting took place, there were no witnesses who could identify the shooter, or shooters, besides McElroy's wife, who was in the truck beside him when he was shot. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder - Rape of a Child / Child Abuse - Animal Abuse - Arson - Gun Violence - Vigilantism Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Living Juice: Go to drinkinglivingjuice.com and use code KILLER20 at checkout for 20% off your first purchase! From 1932 to 1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were perhaps the best-known outlaws in the United States. It was during the Great Depression that Bonnie and Clyde rose to fame for their daring bank heists and Robin Hood-esque crimes. Hollywood glamorized them as a young couple in love, but in their time on the run, they left a trail of death and destruction in their path and are believed to be responsible for the deaths of four civilians and nine police officers. Their story came to an abrupt end at the hands of authorities in May of 1934, when they were only 23 and 25 years old. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder - Gun Violence - Robbery - Self Mutilation - Mentions of Sexual Assault Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: ZocDoc: Go to Zocdoc.com/QUEENS and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. Just after midnight on August 11th, 2003, Alaskan native, Sonya Ivanoff parted ways with her best friend and began the short walk home to her apartment from her friend's house. This would be the last time that 19-year-old Sonya was seen alive by her best friend. A few days later, Sonya's nude body was found just a few miles outside of her hometown of Nome, Alaska. She'd been shot once in the back of the head. Unfortunately, investigators were unable to find any DNA or obvious evidence at the scene or on Sonya's body. They couldn't understand how a perpetrator could leave zero DNA evidence behind. As they progressed in the investigation, two witnesses came forward and dropped a bombshell on them about Sonya's last moments that night. What came next made the entire community of Nome, and even Alaska, question if they were really safe. **TRIGGER WARNING: MMIW, sexual assault, murder** Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G89VUbujX7Q Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Babbel: Right now, get up to 55% off your subscription when you go to BABBEL.com/queens. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. There was no answer at the front door and the Ryens' car was missing. When he peeked in through a sliding glass door in the back of home, Bill thought what he was seeing was some sort of prank. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Inside the home were the bodies of Doug, Peggy, and Jessica Ryen, and Bill's son, Chris. For more than three and a half decades, the disappearance of 12-year-old Jonelle Matthews was a mystery – a riddle neither authorities nor her family members could solve. The residents of her cloistered Colorado hometown had scoured every inch of prairie. Jonelle's face had been on milk cartons nationwide. Even the President of the United States had appealed to the public for help. Still, every lead had fizzled. Every person of interest had turned out to be a dead end. Then, in 2019, Jonelle's remains were unearthed near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With the discovery came a troubling new question: Had the truth been hiding in plain sight the entire time? Was the man who couldn't stop obsessing over Jonelle's disappearance also the person who took her? From Campside Media and Wondery comes season two of SUSPECT. Former CNN reporter Ashley Fantz and executive producers Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Suspect, Over My Dead Body) dig into one of the most mind-bending cold cases in modern history, in an attempt to separate fact and fiction, compulsion from guilt, and true-crime fandom from a motive for murder. In the early morning hours of July 1st, 2018, a neighbor of the Chundawat family in the Burari neighborhood in Delhi, India was puzzled when he saw that their shops still weren't open. The milk had been delivered to the grocery shop, but it had not yet been brought inside. Customers were waiting outside to make purchases, but none had seen the Chundawats. Concerned, the neighbor climbed the stairs to the family's home and found the main door open. He pushed through the door and into the home and saw what he thought might be a horrible nightmare. Hanging from an iron grate in the ceiling were nine bodies. Another body was hanging across the room from the others. The eleventh member of the Chundawat family, the grandmother, was laying on the floor beside a bed, with a belt and scarf wrapped around her neck. All eleven members of the family were dead, but nobody could understand why. Had the Chundawat family been part of a ritualistic mass suicide or were they the victims of murder? Part 2 of 2: On January 13th, 1999, 18-year-old high school senior, Hae Min Lee was reported missing by her family. She'd been leaving school that day, but had never arrived to pick up her younger cousin from school. In the time span of less than 30 minutes it seemed, the young woman had vanished. Less than a month later, Hae's body was found in a park, partially buried. She had been strangled to death. The investigation that ensued resulted in Hae's ex-boyfriend, 17-year-old Adnan Syed, being convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, after a judge recently ruled that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence that could've altered the jury's verdict, Adnan's sentence was vacated. Shortly after, the state dropped the charges against him. Was Adnan Syed wrongly convicted? Was his counsel ineffective or was he truly proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? Part 1 of 2. Watch on YouTube Here: https://youtu.be/Kj4L17UODxk On January 13th, 1999, 18-year-old high school senior, Hae Min Lee was reported missing by her family. On Friday, February 24th, 1978, five young men left their homes to head to a basketball game at Chico State in Chico, California. This was the boys' favorite team and they had a basketball tournament they were playing in themselves the next day. They were known as the Gateway Gators and were competing in the Special Olympics. The game ended and the boys' favorite team won. They left the school and stopped at a nearby service station to grab snacks before the hour drive home together. Unfortunately, the young men never made it home. Months later, remains were found in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest. The young men, rather than continue south down the interstate, in a straight shot to their hometown, had veered east and continued in the wrong direction for quite some distance. Their car was found abandoned. Four of the young men were found dead. People assumed that because four of the young men were described as “slow” or mentally disabled, they'd just gotten lost, but their families knew better. They still, to this day, believe that the young men were victims of foul play. With one man still missing, there are no answers to this case, only theories and rumors. What happened to the Yuba County Five? TRIGGER WARNINGS: outdated terminology for intellectually and developmentally disabled, that can be considered offensive now (these words were used to describe the men at the time when it was more acceptable). Larry Hall is a murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer. Authorities believe that Hall was active throughout the 80s and into the early 90s. Hall was arrested in 1994, and eventually confessed to kidnapping 15 year old Jessica Roach. Although Jessica Roach had been abducted and murdered, Hall didn't confess to murdering her. While waiting for an appeal to his conviction, the FBI feared that Hall might be released and reached out to another prisoner, James Keene, and sent him undercover to try to obtain a confession from Hall.
