Effect on Emotions Mindfulness has helped me to see beyond my emotions. I think the fallacy is that we are our thoughts. We are our emotions, but we are really so much more than that. When we can separate ourselves from our thoughts and our emotions and see beyond them and step into this larger being that we are, we find a more calm. We find more fulfillment and we find more happiness in life. It's not that those thoughts and emotions ever stop, but we begin to see them in a different way. Thoughts on Breathing Breathing is quintessential. We never stop breathing. For me, it's been an important aspect and an important focus with my lung cancer. Also as an athlete and a runner, I've practiced breathing throughout my life. Simply focusing on the breath and connecting deeper within yourself is a powerful practice that helps one really get through a lot of anxiety, fear and self doubt in your life. And, he looked at me and said, "Well, I don't know if you're quite ready for that." I said, "OK, well thanks. I'm going to go do the eco-challenge." And I just decided that that's what I was going to do. So it's interesting. I think that this idea of bullying for me personally isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think there's a silver lining to it in a way where it drove me towards excellence. I guess that experience that I had in Nepal, in the Himalayan summit where I was being teased and bullied in a way, just drove me to prove them wrong. That I wasn't the person that they thought I was.
We gathered semi-rad.com creator Brendan Leonard, adventure guide Rob Harsh and Climbing Magazine editor Matt Samet in the Airstream at The Studio Boulder for a discussion about resilience. Each guest read their personal writings and shared their story of coming through difficult periods in their life and coming through it with a deeper appreciation for climbing mountains.
