Scientists think they might have found a planet that is "brimming with life," and we're pretty sure whoever lives there is way smarter than earthlings. We learn about a climber who had to be rescued twice in one week because he forgot his phone on the mountain. And we discuss a vintage story about a hiker who was lost and couldn't be rescued because when first responders called him he didn't pick up because he didn't recognize the number. We debate whether it was appropriate for a tennis player to tell her opponent to put on deodorant. We discuss the Oklahoma City bombing documentary, and how hearing the stories of the survivors helped portray the scope of loss. Susie is worried about a kind of hornet that is making its home in her town, and Sarah thinks they might be government drones or psyops. A town in Finland calls itself the home of Santa, but residents are fed up with all the tourists. We consider the backlash about tourism around the world and what's really driving it.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster at https://rocketmoney.com/braincandyVisit https://shopbeam.com/braincandy and use code BRAINCANDY to get our exclusive discount of up to 35% off.For 50% off your order, head to https://www.dailylook.com and use code BRAINCANDYGet 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life. Matt Walker MA, is a dedicated men's psychologist and international mountain guide based in Washington, USA. With a mission to help men navigate mid-life challenges, Matt empowers his clients to define success, align their values with actions, and live unapologetically. Through 1:1 coaching, group programs, immersive retreats, and transformative climbing expeditions, Matt creates opportunities for growth, adventure, and community. His work is rooted in fostering clarity, boldness, and a life lived in alignment with personal values. Matt lives in a mountain town in Washington State with his two children and balances parenting with a full workload which includes coaching individual and groups, leading climbing expeditions both professionally and personally Matt Walker Vroom Vroom Veer Show Summary Matt's Balancing Act and Life Shifts Matt discusses his work as both a mountain guide and a psychologist, supporting men through major life transitions. He is excited about the balance in his calendar between traditional coaching and field work in the mountains. Matt mentions he has a new book coming out after a 10-year publishing hiatus. He also reflects on how his values and priorities have shifted with age, emphasizing the importance of embracing these changes rather than judging oneself based on past expectations. Skepticism and the Shaping of Belief Matt and Jeffery discuss their approaches to knowledge and belief. Jeffery describes himself as highly skeptical, avoiding absolute certainty and viewing most things on a spectrum of probability. Matt agrees with this perspective, sharing an example from a memoir that acknowledged multiple viewpoints of the same experience. They discuss the unreliability of memory and the impact of mentors and teachers in shaping their worldviews. Matt reflects on how early influences expanded his understanding of career possibilities beyond his suburban upbringing. Mountain Climbing and Post-Military Life Matt shares his experience of moving from Northern New Jersey to Washington State after high school, motivated by his desire to be in the mountains following an Outward Bound course. He became involved in the climbing community, joining a group of experienced climbers and participating in significant expeditions. Matt later pursued a degree in philosophy but ultimately worked as a full-time mountain guide, leading international expeditions including the Seven Summits. Jeffery, in contrast, completed a bachelor's degree in psychology using his GI Bill after retiring from the Air Force, but chose not to pursue a career in that field. Matt's Approach to Existential Crises Matt discusses his approach to helping clients who are experiencing existential crises. He explains that he combines his background in psychology with outdoor experiences, particularly mountain climbing, to create a more effective therapeutic environment. Matt emphasizes the importance of having a guide during these experiences, comparing it to psychedelic journeys with proper set and setting. He notes that the most powerful moments for clarity and transformation occur during the descent from a summit, before transitioning back to everyday life. Matt sees his role as a supportive guide rather than actively doing the work for his clients. Challenging Experiences and Personal Growth Matt and Jeffery discuss the transformative power of challenging experiences, particularly in the context of personal growth and self-awareness. They explore how these experiences can lead to clarity, alignment between values and actions, and a sense of awakening. Jeffery shares his recent experience with a meditation app called "Way App," which he finds more effective than typical meditation apps due to its foundation in authentic Zen practices. They both agree that consistent, thoughtful practice can lead to gradual but meaningful increases in awareness and personal growth.

Hi! My name is Trish, I'm the founder of and event organizer for Women in the Wild. I've been an athlete my whole life, starting out as a gymnast around ages 5-14 and a competitive cheerleader ages 10-16. After that I took up a passion for body building, martial arts and hiking (shocker, I know). Now I work full time in the forestry industry as a tree climber and a faller-in-training. Naturally, hiking lead to backpacking and climbing trees led to climbing rocks. Between high-risk sports and a high-risk job, safety has been an underlying fundamental throughout my life. Counterintuitive as it may seem to some, the risks I take are calculated and based on my own body, experience, knowledge of the subject and a willingness to say "not today." I came to the realization that not everyone has the risk tolerance or physical base that I do, which is one of the reasons I started WitW.
In this episode of Tiny Show and Tell Us, we cover why your body feels so ‘off' at high altitudes and how we've evolved not to detect low oxygen levels but high amounts of carbon dioxide. Then we unpack the confusing world of molecule chirality — what it is, why it matters, and how we evolved to only have ‘left-handed' amino acids but ‘right-handed' DNA and RNA.We need your stories — they're what make these bonus episodes possible! Are you facing a mountain of challenges? Do you need help growing in the Christian faith? In this timely reflection, Jonathan reminds us of the power of community and the essential role of friendships in fulfilling God's calling in life by exploring the significance of the eight friends mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Colossians 4. These friends, each with unique qualities and roles, supported Paul in his ministry while imprisoned in Rome, and the same mix of qualities is essential for the godly friends we surround ourselves with today. Drawing from Scripture and personal experience, Jonathan emphasizes that we are not meant to walk alone in our spiritual journey. Instead, we need companions to encourage, support, and challenge us on our faith journey.Join Jonathan to learn from Paul's friends and reflect on the questions: What role do you play in the Body of Christ, and who are the friends you need on your journey?Connect with Jonathan and the Candid community:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/candidpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/candidpodTwitter: https://twitter.com/thecandidpod

Life's toughest challenges mold us in profound ways. They have the power to shatter our spirits and throw monumental obstacles in our path. Amidst the rubble, the journey to rebuild takes various forms - relocating to unfamiliar cities, embracing new learning at school, or venturing to conquer the Seven Summits, where the pursuit of personal strength becomes a transformative odyssey. Today, we're privileged to hear Melanie's story, navigating through these towering peaks. She shares how adversity drove her into the mountains, where untamed landscapes offered solace and tests of resilience. The Seven Summits beckon with their daunting heights across continents - from Aconcagua in South America to Everest in Asia. If these peaks initially seem insurmountable, know that Melanie's journey teaches us otherwise. This episode is for anyone who's glanced at this list and felt doubt creep in. Here's the truth: YES, you can. Find Melanie: IG Flickr (photos of her adventures) Find Courtney: Email: ynqpod@gmail.com IG Website YouTube
Perhaps no one has quit their job like my guest today, Cory Richards. Richards, still a world-renowned photographer, abruptly ended his career as an elite mountaineer in April 2021 at the foot of the world's seventh-highest peak. Over several days, Richards experienced what he later described as a mixed bipolar episode. With one hundred thousand dollars spent and a film in the works, Richards announced to his team at Dhaulagiri's cold and windblown base camp that he was quitting—not just the expedition, but climbing altogether. He told his livid teammates he planned to move to Los Angeles to pursue filmmaking and writing. The pressure cooker of personal history, fame, high achievement, and perhaps the exhaustion of living someone else's life boiled over.In 2011, Richards became the first and only American to climb one of the world's 8000-meter peaks in winter. On the descent, the team narrowly escaped death in an avalanche. In the aftermath, Richards snapped the iconic frozen selfie that adorned the cover of National Geographic's 125th-anniversary issue. He was the 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year and a 2014 National Geographic Photographer Fellow. He summited Everest without oxygen, garnering over two billion media impressions with his partner Adrian Ballinger as they Snapchatted their way up the mountain in 2016.For years, people lived vicariously through him. He garnered over a million Instagram followers. Everyone told him he had the dream job. He traveled nine months each year across the globe to distant and stunningly beautiful lands to climb and take pictures. But in his own words, he “hated it.” He was an addict, fueling a burning fire with alcohol, sex, and tremendous pressure to do more and go bigger in increasingly deadly circumstances. Then it all fell apart. His memoir, The Color of Everything, is set to release on July 9. It's a gripping and shockingly frank account of Cory's life struggles. From his adolescent mental health diagnosis to a life of addiction and denial, he's found the slow path toward acceptance. This is a story of personal growth, societal pressures, and the complex interplay between vulnerability, achievement, and emotional resilience. Voices of the Mountains welcomes all-round action hero Will Gadd who is legendary in the climbing world. Year after year, Will has continually pushed the boundaries of ice and mixed climbing. He leaned into competition climbing and with other visionaries like Jeff Lowe, pushed mixed climbing forward. Will is a veteran of mountain sports, and not only does he continue to seek new adventures but he seems to have boundless energy. Will tells the listeners how just ten short years ago, he was quick to call out younger climbers for their inexperience, and the dumb risks they took—only to be met with dismissal as an outdated voice from a previous generation. Today, Will no longer calls people out. He calls them in. And in making that shift discovers how this profound change opened the floodgates to learning; learning which now flows freely in both directions. Will and Steve discuss the culture of ex-communication of older, wiser athletes in the mountain community. How we all need a new model for aging athletes where we value the elder wisdom, insights, and experiences and not just an athlete's mere physical prowess. Join Will and Steve as they challenge one another to unpack a lifetime of lessons from the peaks, and help one another to embrace the wisdom that there is far more to life than facing the external challenges of ice, rock, and gravity, and together they level up to be able to navigate the internal terrain that defines us as human.Visit us at https://uphillathlete.com/voiceofthemountains/ or write to us at coach@uphillathlete.com
