What's the distinction between mind, intellect and ego? And what are their functions? Unlike many modern psychological approaches, the Vedic worldview honors and celebrates the role of all three. While they may not always function perfectly – like the 'mistaken intellect' often discussed by Thom – each of these elements plays a specific and essential role in our evolution.Thom explains in this episode, that rather than putting our efforts into “getting rid of the ego,” we're best served by enlisting our ego as a cooperative component in our quest for enlightenment. Ironically, it's allowing the ego to transcend itself, that gives it the ability to truly know its ultimate, unchanging essence.Episode Highlights:[00:45] Vedic Psychology on Mind, Intellect, and Ego[02:32] Manas[03:53] What Remains Unchanged Within Us?[05:21] Mind Stays the Same[06:39] Two Elements of Manas[07:49] Buddhi[08:54] Ego in Western Psychology[11:47] Vedic Ego (Ahaṃkar)[13:32] Intellect's Role in Ego Formation[14:41] The Ego Structure[16:22] Ahaṃkar in Vedic Meditation[18:03] You Minus All the Thoughts[19:24] True Nature of the Self[20:48] When Mantra Surpasses Ego[22:31] Ego's Experience of The Unbounded Field[24:03] Ego + Cosmic Consciousness[25:57] No Ego, No EnlightenmentUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/

Nandita Chaudhary is a foremost expert on child psychology. She served as a professor at Lady Irwin College in India for over 35 years and teaches in Brazil. Dr. Chaudhary has an impressive record of over 70 publications and several books. Her work challenges mainstream views of parenting, child-rearing, and child health. Given recent debates concerning child research conducted primarily in WEIRD nations (Western Educated Industrialized Rich and Democratic) and subsequently applied universally, her work carries significant relevance. How we understand and shape the lives of children is crucial to how we perceive suffering, healing, and mental disorders. In this interview, we delve into how global organizations like UNICEF may unintentionally harm those they aim to help, how children raised with multiple caregivers can be misclassified as problematic by psychology, and how our comprehension of families, children, and mothers is severely limited. Most importantly, we discuss how studying childcare across various cultures can enlighten us about different ways of living, loving, and understanding one of the most vulnerable among us – children. This might allow us to examine our own biases, practices, and narratives more effectively. *** Mad in America podcasts and reports are made possible, in part, by a grant from the Thomas Jobe Fund. I had the honor of reading Lindsay's amazing book - In Our Element: Using the Five Elements as Soul Medicine to Unleash Your Personal Power - prior to talking to Lindsay. I was blown away by this book in the way that it explains the elements and creates a system for you to access your elemental energies. Immerse Yourself in the Wisdom and Healing Power of the Elements All five elements live within you, and experiences like heartache, anxiety, and procrastination are signs that one of them is out of balance. This beginner-friendly book introduces you to each of the elements―Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal―and shows you how to use them to improve your mental, emotional, and spiritual health. In Our Element weaves together Eastern medicine, Western psychology, Indigenous traditions, and African ancestral principles of spirituality. With a practical approach that incorporates journal prompts, flower essences, yoga poses, and music, Lindsay Fauntleroy teaches you how to tap into the five elements for a balanced and empowered life that aligns with your soul's calling. Lindsay Fauntleroy is an acupuncturist, integrative counselor, educator, and thought- leader in the field of mind-body medicine. Her interdisciplinary approach draws  on the wisdom of psychology, the science of the subtle body, the intersection of spiritual and religious teachings, and indigenous approaches to self-cultivation and mastery.   Lindsay guides patients on their journey to physical and emotional wellness, meaningful transformation, and personal evolution as they manifest their goals. Lindsay was drawn to mind-body medicine after her own journey to fertility introduced her to the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit.  Lindsay has been immersed the healing arts- including meditation, yoga, astrology, divination, and Qi Gong- for over 20 years. Her extensive training includes a Master of Arts from New York University,  a Master of Science from Tri-State College of Acupuncture, and clinical training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Kiiko Matsumoto style Japanese acupuncture, and myofascial Trigger Point release. She is also a certified flower essence practitioner and yoga instructor, weaving mind body and spirit together to facilitate lasting change in her patients' lives.   Lindsay firmly believes that the power to heal should rest in the hands and hearts of all communities.    She provides emerging healers with practitioner certification in the art and science of flower essence therapy.  She is the first and only practitioner authorized by the Flower Essence Society to offer their practitioner certification training in the United States.  Lindsay's line of alchemical Five Element flower essence remedies, the Elementals, are available nationally and internationally. Lindsay also enthusiastically shares her wealth of experience and knowledge through private sessions, workshops and speaking engagements. Everyone is here as a unique expression of the divine.  15:46 A big part of conscious parenting is not just listening, but sacred listening.  17:38 Traditional parenting is hierarchical.  20:03 We can't give anything to anybody that we're not giving to ourselves.  20:39 We have to unlearn some conditioning and bring in the wisdom.  21:34 A big part of conscious parenting is repairing and apologizing - owning, accountability and responsibility.  22:56 The greatest tool ever is to feel what your body is telling you so you know how to feel your feelings, that's taking ownership so you don't project it to someone else. She is currently part of several national and international research projects examining education in indigenous communities and the decolonization of mental health. Her writings explore alternate ways of understanding human suffering, challenge the dominant psychiatric worldview, and critique the Euro-American understandings of distress and disease. Her interests include understanding different ideas of self, especially in indigenous communities, and how our ignorance about these differences harms people we say we are healing. Lacerda-Vandenborn notes that “Psychology is not a very reflective discipline.” This is a conversation about lost indigenous children, psychology's blind spots, and how we can address these concerns with epistemic humility.

In this podcast, we will explain how Eastern spirituality and Western psychology understand the "I," the persona. Both have completely different perspectives of the individual based on their diametrically opposed cultural and religious worldviews. These differences are extremely important for understanding how to overcome suffering. One path provides a way of dealing with our suffering within the social and cultural boundaries we find ourselves in and the other questions these boundaries by suggesting the society and culture themselves create suffering and cannot be alleviated by conforming to the indoctrination that caused suffering in the first place. Season 2 Episode 1 Wellness and Intuition go hand in hand leading us toward the culmination of mind body and spirit working in synchronicity.Achieving this trinity of wellness and awareness of self soul and spirit is attainable through balance.Joining us today is Tania Berg B.A. Life Coach, Medical Qigong Therapist and Host of Life Continuing Podcast Tania Berg has always been fascinated with how the mind works – in particular, the nature of who and what we are at the deepest levels. Tania studied Western Psychology and Eastern Medicine, and it was towards the end of her studies that she started to experience extra normal phenomena that clearly demonstrated that consciousness is fundamental over matter. This awakening caused a major paradigm shift in her understanding of existence and she started reviewing the vast literature on the subject of consciousness. This new understanding led to the creation of a podcast called Life Continuing; where Tania speaks with various guests about spirituality, science, philosophy and eastern medicine, in the context of non-local and continuing consciousness. The show aims to normalize extra-normal experiences, educate about the reality of an afterlife; and ultimately to understand our own true essence through deep conversations with her guests about their unique experiences and insights.Tania is also the founder of Wellness Continuing, offering private online support for healthy eating/weight management as a lifestyle, and intuitive wellness using her own intuitive guidance to support your wellness journey, and guide you to connect to your own innate intuition.Life Continuing Podcast (Canada): https://linktr.ee/lifecontinuingLife Continuing Website: https://www.lifecontinuing.com/Wellness Advisor: https://www.wellnesscontinuing.com/Instagram:@lifecontinuingpodcast https://www.instagram.com/lifecontinuingpodcast/ @wellnesscontinuing https://www.instagram.com/wellnesscontinuing/

With that in mind, what would a decolonized psychology include and exclude in its framework? As Sunil addresses in his work and in this interview, Psychology, as a social science, has served the Western colonialist project in all its forms. Even as we have entered into a "post-colonial" period over the past century or more, the impacts of colonization on numerous populations around the world are still felt presently, profoundly so. Officially, Western nation-states have abandoned previously defined colonies to self-governance (after centuries of various forms of anti-colonial resistance). As Sunil stated in an interview with Mad in America: “In psychology, the stories of people from the Global South were depicted as a deficient form of humanity, and stories of people of color were relegated to the margins. I saw 356 million Indian youth, a gigantic part of our humanity, missing from the canon of the discipline. Their voice, their realities were erased, and I wanted to start addressing this gap. This motivated me to come up with a decolonizing framework to speak to these absences, to speak to the realities of the people who are the majority of humanity, but largely missing from the field.” (https://bit.ly/2Ni6XeY) Sunil Bhatia is an internationally known professor in the field of psychology and human development. He specializes in understanding the development of self and identity within the context of racism, migration, globalization and formation of transnational diasporas. He is currently serving as one of the editors for a special issue on Feminism and Decolonizing Psychology for the journal ‘Feminism and Psychology.’ His Op-Eds have appeared in Psychology Today, OZY, New London Day, Indian Express, Truthout, The Pacific, and U.S. World News and Reports. Robin Grille is a Sydney-based psychologist in private practice and a parenting educator. His articles on parenting and child development have been widely published and translated in Australia and around the world. Robin is the author of three books: ‘Parenting for a Peaceful World’ , ‘Heart to Heart Parenting’ and his newest title: ‘Inner Child Journeys’. Robin’s work is animated by his belief that humanity’s future is largely dependent on the way we collectively relate to our children.  Robin’s experiential, skills-based and informational parenting courses have helped many people to embrace parenting as a transformative, personal growth journey. Drawing from 28 years’ clinical experience and from leading-edge neuropsychological research, Robin’s seminars and courses focus on healthy emotional development for children as well as parents; while building supportive, co-operative parenting communities.      Robin Grille was always interested in human behaviour and although disillusioned by a lot of academia, he returned with a passion following his own personal growth As guitarist with stage fright, he explored counselling, which opened up an interest to understand himself and relationships In the 1980s in Sydney there was an explosion in the human potential movement, that sparked his interest in psychotherapy “When people in a room are intentionally vulnerable with one another, it creates belonging, closeness and realness” Robin initially immersed himself in body-centred psychotherapy including bioenergetics vegetative therapy and biodynamic massage, related to our body structure and how we breathe and move. He found this interesting because it is connected to how we relate to one another Robin experienced high school in Australia as a shame-based culture Permission to show your heart, let go of control. It was immensely liberating and healing One of the drivers for him exploring psychology was following a personal family tragedy The importance of community  Western Psychology is the psychology of the individual - we’ve lost the thread of connection “It’s a cliche to say ‘it takes a village’, but it’s not a cliche, it’s a must”  It’s a system that brings up a child, not just a mum and dad. At least 4 people are needed, to strengthen and support Interrelationships with one another and with nature The general evolution away from violence towards children over the last century To create a violent society, you have to treat children badly Conflict doesn’t have to be violent, it can be very creative “War is a psychological issue”, Alice Miller We change the culture by rejecting the authoritarian and over-medicalised styles of parenting and old-fashioned styles of education Democratic nations don’t go to war with one another- there’s a peace dividend within democracy empathy and heart-centred brain development according to our relationships  we are because of tribe emotion is the pathway of connection emotions are contagious  constant state of communication, even when we’re unconscious of it “families and tribes are the empathy farmers of the next generation” teaching the power of listening and curiosity and giving the time to be still “our real language is not words but body language” there’s a brain in the human heart and gut when somebody says “don’t let the heart rule the head, that’s a biological impossibility” we are part of nature Michael Leunig, Australian cartoonist, philosopher and social commentator said: “love cannot happen at speed”  we’re entirely impoverished with time and connection being listened to: “we need empathic witnesses to who we are. It’s not the fixing that fixes us, it’s everything to do with nature” It’s important to have a full cup and be held by the village, as the nourished parent has a different presence for their child: they feel more nourished when you are nourished The body can’t lie All of us can be sensitive to emptiness, and need connection with ourselves, the nonhuman world and one another to nourish ourselves It often takes just a moment of quiet or touch to reconnect dance and song are essential.  One of the ways of dominating a populous is taking away their dance The map of psycho-emotional development of childhood- science endorses what psychotherapists have seen The right to exist in utero, in birth and the perinatal period The right to need (attachment stage) : being held, carried, breastfed and co-sleeping, which gives the fundamental sense of reaching out and trust The right to have support (toddler years) The right to freedom (later toddler years): stepping away from the orbit of the adult and exploring our own way, expressing emotions. Most of us carry a deep sense of shame of who we are from this stage of development More aware at the genital level, pleasure, curiosity, passion, binary in terms of right and wrong, (5-7 years) Primary school years relate to competancy- vulnerable to feeling ashamed about learning. Children learn best when they’re not being forced to learn, and instead encouraged to follow their passions Identity, sexuality, the right to diverse and unique The right to create and express Wounding causes a development arrest, and healing reignites the development that was halted  Parents, when understanding child development, get paralysed by a sense of guilt and fear of damaging their child. It’s important to consider that nothing is permanent in terms of wounding. Repair is possible “Human beings are breathtakingly resilient” Every family has conflict “We don’t thrive from perfect safety. We thrive from risk and experience, and sometimes from pain” Our wounds give us our wisdom Leonard Cohen “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in” To find out more about Robin Grille’s work, his books, articles and seminars visit:   robingrille.com

Dear Friends, Maitri Space Awareness practice, as described in this Podcast, has played a very significant role in my personal and professional life and development. I was first introduced to this view and practice at the (then) Naropa Institute in the summer of 1977. The class was taught by Marvin Casper who—as indicated in the Podcast—was instrumental in the early therapeutic development and application of the work with these practices and in the subsequent development of such practices as a key element in the training of Contemplative psychotherapists. This was my introduction to meditation and Space Awareness practice… Before this, I was a Social Worker and Therapist for many years and was curious about the dialogue between Eastern and Western Psychology. So, this class provided a seminal glimpse for me into this dialogue. These practices are taught initially experientially, meaning that the theoretical framework of each aspect of these teachings isn’t brought into the discussion until after one has had the experience.  I very much appreciate the integrity of this approach as a way to have the learning be less theoretical and conceptual and more coming from an inner felt sense of the practice. My first experience of the rooms was to have a definite bodily sense of the difference between these five psychological and personality types. For example, there was a sense of embodying the quality of equanimity that wasn’t just an insight. These qualities are cultivated by the color, posture and certain elements of each room.  The result was that I had a glimpse into the relative nature of these psychological qualities and also how changeable they are and can be. Thus, it created a feeling of permeability with any given narrative or style that I or a client might identify with. After this class, I did continue on for graduate studies at the Naropa Institute for a degree in East/West Psychology. And in that context I had the opportunity to deepen my study and practice of meditation and Maitri Space Awareness further in the form of a 90-day retreat. This all became the bedrock for my understanding of the Contemplative approach to therapy and also for Therapeutic Communities.  And it is this understanding that my fellow Windhorse clinicians and I explore in our discussion. Thank you for listening, Kathy Emery

Download In this episode, Joe holds conversation with Dr. Michael Sapiro, Clinical Psychologist out of Boise, Idaho. They cover topics surrounding how meditation and mindfulness intersect with psychedelia as well as psychic ability, altered states and integration. 3 Key Points: Meditation and psychedelics have a lot of overlap such as ego dissolution and unity. Dr. Sapiro believes that meditation and mindfulness bring personal awakening in order to create collective transformation. Both meditation and psychedelics are the most beneficial when they are integrated into our waking life and when we use our experiences to help others and our planet. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes About Dr. Michael Sapiro Attended John F Kennedy University where he received his PsyD He focused on meditation research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences He is from Chicago, IL He spent time in Thailand for the Peace Corps A lot of his experience was from his time in the Bay Area There is more data coming out about awareness based meditative states and psychedelic states and how they relate subjectively to each other Dr. Sapiro’s Practice Transformational Psychology, Integration based He integrates the Buddhist Dharma, Western Psychology, Non-dual meditation and philosophy, and Noetic Sciences into his practice Michael sees 20-28 patients a week Kashmir Shaivism It's a dissolving type of experience, Its a non-dualistic style of tradition The non-dual tradition helps one just be “whole and unbroken” and focus on the present and now He does the human work in the Buddhism Dharma style, and the spiritual work with the restful piece of being in the now, the focus being integration Vision His vision has been on enhancing personal awakening in order to create collective transformation He wants to help communities and states and nations to transform via individual awakening He has worked with law enforcement agents, military vets, community members, a variety of people at different levels all the way from grounding to stability to thriving He always ends each Sangha with saying 'take this work and apply it to your neighbors' A Sangha is a buddhist community of monks/individuals in support of each other “People have such a deep connection to nature when you come out of the psychedelic experience. You start taking care of the environment differently than before went you went in.” - Michael “We now have data on greater environmental concern and stewardship after the psychedelic experience.” - Joe People who are consciously interacting with things outside of themselves have a greater care for those things. “If I am hurting the world I am hurting myself.” - Michael “Hopefully one of the bigger things that come out of the psychedelic movement are greater levels of environmentalism and global stewardship” - Joe The psychedelic movement helps us see systems that are made up are a part of our tangible reality and our responsibility to take care of the people in the systems We can use psychedelics and meditation, and integration from these experiences, to see how we can operate in these systems and help people find resources in these systems Dr. Sapiro’s Work He teaches as Esalen Institute leading workshops One of his colleagues has reached over 200,000 people with their work since 2011 His goal isn't to be the lead, but the support of leaders, especially women because he feels the need for a balance and the need for more female leaders Michael says he loves surrounding himself around ‘world-changers’ and loves doing anything to be around them and learn from them Boise, Idaho Michael says its surprisingly conscious state Its very community oriented There are 6-7 Buddhist Sanghas, groups of dedicated folks to their practice There is a lot of nature and nature is Dharma, it is the teacher Psychic Ability and Altered States It's very normal for humans to have psychic experiences All of us have access to these states, we just have to tap into them Michael encourages people to accept and cultivate these experiences It may be better to accept these experiences than to deny them There is a difference between energetic flow and psychosis Crazy Wise is a documentary that touches on spiritual emergence issues The Overlap of Psychedelic States and Meditation The Institute of Noetic Sciences had a program called The Future of Meditation Research They found in the research that they were only looking at reducing anxiety and depression, the clinical applications But they found that more than half of the people experienced psychic phenomenon, mystical experiences, terrifying experiences, the things that overlap/correlate with psychedelic experiences Both meditative and psychedelic experiences point to ego dissolution and unity at the same time Ego and anxiety both have wisdom in them, we don't want to lose them completely, but learn how to balance them and use them wisely “We need to be mindful of how we integrate what we learn in the psychedelic/meditative state into our waking life” - Michael “How can meditation and psychedelics lend themselves to being the best version of ourselves while committing to others well being? That is what I am most passionate about.” - Michael David Trellen and Willoughby Britton - Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness “If we are choosing to be more compassionate to our fellow humans and the earth, let’s not tough it out, let's help each other.” - Joe “Let’s do the work that it takes to heal it.” - Michael Be open, be curious. What might meditation be able to bring to personal awakening in order to create collective transformation? At this time of year, there are all sorts of emotions that arising and if we can strengthen our inner world, our inner resources, and emotional fitness.. aside from the content or context of our lives -- the things that are going outside of us, if we develop tools to become more conscious and aware we can live a happier, more peaceful and fulfilled life.  WHich let’s be honest -- we all want more of this. In particular today, I want to focus on how you judge yourself and others, and how judgment can be a destroyer of happiness. You might judge yourself for showing up to another Thanksgiving without a romantic partner, or without pursuing your dream/aspiration of having your own business. You could be judging yourself about your weight or health, or whatever you didn’t accomplish this year that you want to be different. You might judge others, your family for your unmet needs or wishing others to be different and judging the way the way they are living their lives. And when you judge yourself or others harshly --  you might also notice some anger there. I think of anger as judgment's best friend. Anger is often a byproduct of judgment. And then the ultimate judgment -- judging ourselves for judging. I want to be clear that this is not an exercise to make judgment wrong or make ourselves wrong but it’s the very opposite. Can I bring loving presence and mindfulness to whatever is arising WITHOUT judgment? Can I create some space between the feelings, thoughts, and sensations that arise? How to bring in more love to the table? I want to share a story with you that I heard when I attended the psychotherapy networker event here in WashingtonD.C. I had the opportunity to see one of my favorite spiritual teachers Jack Kornfield. He is the author of one of my favorite books, A Path with Heart. He grew up in very difficult conditions and in his early adulthood, he went to Thailand to study Buddhist meditation. He is known for combining his spiritual teachings with Western Psychology. At the event I attended several months ago, Jack Kornfield told a story and that stuck with me about mindfulness and during dealing with difficult sensations -- and I want to share with you. He told a story about a young Marine with deeper anger issues who he worked with to feel into his body in such a way that he was able to to be more aware of when his anger was triggered. Through ‘coming back to his senses’, he was able to create a conscious space in which all his reactions could be experienced from enough distance to allow a sort of loving calm in the middle of his storms. Here's here's this how the story goes: "The soldier was at the supermarket at the end of a tough evening, the lines were long, and a couple people ahead of him was a woman holding a baby with too many items in her cart. This triggered his anger immediately and his mind raged with angry assessments: “I’m exhausted, these lines are ridiculous, she shouldn’t be in the express lane but of course she doesn’t even think about where she is…” To make matters worse, the woman hands the baby over to the cashier, another woman who cooed and snuggled, and so the line was held up even longer. And the officer suddenly realized, “Oh! This is anger!” and he started to breathe deeply, sense his tense, contracting body, observe his pain and anguish, and become aware of the stories he was telling in his mind. In a few moments, something in him started to relax and open. He looked out again and saw that, oh, he’s actually a cute kid. When he got up to the cashier, he said, “That was a cute little boy.”“Oh, did you like him?” she said, “He’s my boy. You see, my husband was killed in Iraq last year, so now I have to work two jobs now. My mom takes care of him and she brings him in so I can say goodnight to him.”" This story makes me quite emotional because we're so quick to judge -- to come to decisions or conclusions about ourselves or others. Especially at a busy time of year, when we're moving into the holidays and we might have to wait in long lines and we can easily see the judgemental mind rearing its head. And we can just begin to notice the quality of a judgemental mind -- it's agitated. “Why is this person in the express lane when they should have been in the other lane.” Or judging ourselves “I ate too much food. What’s wrong with me?” There's a little process that this story about the Marine illustrates. Which is first to name the emotion. Whether that be “anger” to name the anger. The second step is to notice the sensation in the body. Notice how the body is contracting or feel into any tight sensations. The third step is just to observe the inner dialogue which is typically negative and to see if you can become aware of your thoughts with some space around it. Can you start to relax and open? Is there an opportunity to say something kind to someone like the Marine did, “Oh that's a cute little boy,” or maybe say something kind to yourself. Can you take a deeper fuller breath?

Power Quotes From The Show "We strongly believe in the power of the mind and the power of intention. There are a lot of studies that show that if you believe you're going to be healed using this medicine, procedure, or belief system, then often times you will be healed because your mind, body, and spirit are connected and plugged in." - Dr. Jeff McNairy "Before I tried plant medicine, I thought I was pretty well adjusted and it turns out I was not. I learned that I had a ton of behaviors and mindframes in resistance mechanisms that were impeding me from really being happy and connected to people. I was horrible at relationships and I was angry. Even though I could mask it really well at my job while helping these people and loving my work, I was kind of a mess on an individual level." - Dr. Jeff McNairy "Plant medicine links up with the pre-frontal cortex and the amygdala and you get to see and have awareness about what your neuron pathways were about from years past. You get to understand how the trauma you experienced as a child has been affecting you for years, build new neuron pathways, see your reality in a new light, and change your thought process about the world around you." - Dr. Jeff McNairy "Our ego is the image that we portray to the rest of the world. It's who we want people to think we are and it's there in order to protect us. Some people are more plugged into themselves than others so their ego isn't too strong and they're more authentic. As you do plant medicine and plug into yourself, you realize that you don't need to hold onto that ego anymore." - Dr. Jeff McNairy "I can't connect with anybody unless I'm connected to myself first. The problem with society these days with wars, conflict, and different cultural misunderstandings is that people don't feel the connection to those other people at all. The reason they don't is that they're not connected to themselves. So, if you are connected to who you are as a person, that means that you're capable of having true empathy." - Dr. Jeff McNairy Links From Today's Show Rythmia Facebook Twitter Instagram YouTube Dr. Jeff McNairy Facebook Instagram The Reality of Truth Film Tangentially Speaking Podcast - Dr. Jeff McNairy Dr. Jeff McNairy - Plant Medicine for our Western Culture Transformative Travel With Plant Medicine Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) Dr. Rick Doblin Dr. Joe Dispenza David Deida Brené Brown Dr. Gabor Maté Kyle Cease Buckminster Fuller Michael Forbes of Ageless Living WFR 086 Mark Divine WFR 137 Dr. Tim Brown WFR 149 Johnny Blackburn About Dr. Jeff McNairy Dr. Jeff McNairy, Psy.D., M.P.H. has been working in the healthcare field for 25 years. Aired Wednesday, 11 January 2017, 8:00 PM ET When we think of the roots of Western Civilization, our minds go to ancient Greece and the great philosophers like Pythagoras, Plato and Socrates. The question arises, were their ideas and concepts original and unique to them or were they inspired by others… other cultures and other civilizations? What would you think if you were told that there were Ashrams in Europe 2500 years ago or that many of the famous Greek Philosophers studied in India and were directly influenced by the great yogic traditions? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Linda Johnsen, says there is impressive historical evidence for this and that Western tradition bears a striking resemblance to Eastern spirituality. She is the award-winning author of eight books on spirituality including Daughters of the Goddess: The Women Saints of India, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hinduism. Linda joined me for an enlightening chat about her new book Lost Masters: Rediscovering The Mysticism of the Ancient Greek Philosophers, in which she offers a fascinating opportunity to reacquaint ourselves with the ancient Greek masters, revealing a side of Western philosophy that has been almost completely ignored by traditional academia. "Ashrams in Europe twenty-five hundred years ago? Greek philosophers studying in India? Meditation classes in ancient Rome? It sounds unbelievable, but it’s historically true. Alexander the Great had an Indian guru. Pythagoras encouraged their students to meditate. Apollonius, the most famous Western sage of the first century c.e., visited both India and Egypt." About Linda Johnsen: I'm a writer who shuttles back and forth between two universes: the modern Western world and India! I've published over 200 articles on topics related to yoga and Hindu spirituality in many magazines including Yoga Plus, Yoga International, Yoga Journal, Himalayan Path, The Mountain Astrologer, and Light of Consciousness. I'm also author of eight books so farincluding Daughters of the Goddess: The Women Saints of India, and The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Hinduism. My essays have appeared in a half dozen anthologies including The Divine Mosaic, Uncoiling the Snake, Science of Breath, Shree Maa: The Story of a Saint, Hindu Astrology Lessons, Yoga Abenteuer Meditation (in German), and In the Footsteps of the Goddess. I've lectured throughout the U.S. on Goddess spirituality, yoga, Hinduism, and Vedic Astrology. I've suffered through numerous radio and cable TV interviews. I have a Master's degree in Eastern Studies. For four years I was Manager of the Center for Holistic Medicine in Glenview, Illinois. Later I served as Administrator of the Program in Eastern Studies, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania. This was a fully accredited Master’s degree program which focused on the many facets of the yoga tradition: hatha yoga postures, stress reduction and breathing exercises, diet, physiology, ethics, philosophy, Sanskrit studies, meditation and research. These days I'm still writing, teaching, and introducing people to their Vedic horoscope. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area where my husband, Johnathan Brown, shares my passion for the Vedic tradition. Learn about shapeshifting from prominent expert and Shamanism teacher, Llyn Roberts. What is it?  Why do it? How to do it? Join CJ as she interviews Llyn Roberts about her book “Shapeshifting into Higher Consciousness”.  What is Shapeshifting? Shapeshifting is a technique of changing from one energetic state to another. It’s based on the belief that everything is made of energy and that we are all connected to each other through this force. Most of us have been introduced to shapeshifting through fantasy movies like Twilight, where hunky Jacob shapeshifts from a human into a werewolf.  Despite these modern day takes on shapeshifting, it is a spiritual technique that shows up in many ancient forms of Shamanism. Although the fantastical idea of shapeshifting into an animal may be more exciting, the truth is we actually shapeshift every day. Think of the last sporting event you went to. Most likely, your energy shapeshifted the moment you entered the stadium. For me, it was the local Seattle Sounders soccer game. The confetti flying in the air mixed with the loud clapping and cheering noises encircled me and before I knew it, my energetic state shifted to match the excitement of the audience. That is basic shapeshifting. The easiest way to understand it is by comparing it to the basic scientific process of changing from one state to another.  For example, water shapeshifts into ice, liquid, and steam. Recently, I read Llyn Robert’s book called Shapeshifting into Higher Consciousness Here are some excerpts from her book that beautifully defines shapeshifting:  “Shapeshifting is about changing from one state to another.  It is innate to us all and the calling card of nature and life. We, and the world within which we live, are ever-changing and evolving.  When we take the time to really see and immerse ourselves in the natural world around us – the winds, tress, animals, stones, skies- we discover that everything is constantly moving. The air can transform from an oppressive stillness on a hot summer’s night into a gentle breeze…and then again it can morph into a powerful hurricane.  Human beings also continuously morph from one state to another.  Our body changes dramatically through the course of a lifetime from birth to death. Whether changing weather patterns, shifting moods, or mutable physical afflictions- it is easy to see that we and everything in our world are quite fluid.” Why do people want to shapeshift? The answer depends on who you are talking to. If you talked to a Shaman, who is the healer in many indigenous communities, shapeshifting is a powerful spiritual practice.  Shamans travel to other worlds and realms to obtain wisdom, power, and energy to assist change in this world.  The mission of the Shamans is to maintain balance between people, spirit, and nature.  Shamans use their abilities for the benefit of others and for positive change within their communities. Unlike the many Evangelists we see on late night television that use healing as a power trip, Shamans are not doing the work for an ego trip, personal gain or for profit. There are other groups (e.g.- merge with an arch enemy and get them into a car accident) that use shapeshifting as a means of gaining power over others. The intention is to use shapeshifting to control others, cause harm to others or for personal gain. When I interviewed Llyn Roberts, a teacher in Shamanism, she described this behavior as sorcery and believes that those who use sorcery find that the negative energy comes back to hurt them. I heard something similar during a class on “core shamanism” with Michael Harner, the founder of The Foundation for Shamanic Studies. In the class, the teachers believe that anyone who misuses these techniques loses their powers. What do you experience when you shapeshift?  What are the benefits? Over the last year, I’ve taken a few classes from The Foundation for Shamanic Studies.  The very first class involves finding your spirit animal, which is an animal that brings you personal power. The class encourages participants to create an ongoing relationship with your spirit animal that you can shapeshift with it. Similar to the spiritual connection depicted in the movie Avatar. The inhabitants  merge their spiritual energy with nature and the connection allow both parties to experience the power of the other.  One of the main characters Neytiri, played by Zoe Saldana, exemplified the concept of shapeshifting when she demonstrated how to spiritually connect with the dragon to gain it’s loyalty. One of my spirit animals is a crow, in the past I have allowed our energies to unite and by doing this, both the crow and myself experience the benefit of merging. The crow encounters a humanistic view of the world whereas I experience the world from a crow’s point of view. The first thing I noticed when merging was the difference in my visual perception- instead of my eyes focusing on just two feet in front of me, I found myself broadening my visual horizon. My eyes wanted to scan around and focus on getting a larger, more panoramic view of my surroundings.  Everything became more intense, even the ripples in the water were sharper. Whether it was real or not, who knows, but it certainly felt real. Plus, I was able to see life around me from a different perspective. You may question what actually happens during the merging process? I wondered this myself and my sense is that all life forms have a spiritual and energetic vibration that is capable of uniting with others through energy. My energy merged with the energy of a crow’s archetype.  In this intermingling of energy, each being gets  the opportunity to gain the life wisdom that each has collected over many years. Oddly, this merging gave me a sense of wholeness and a closer connection to life around us. Can humans really transform into animals like you see in the movies? A number of sensationalists seem to think so. I was a bit skeptical, but wanted to keep an open mind.  So, I asked Llyn Roberts, a prominent teacher of healing and Shamanism, if she’s ever seen someone actually change into an animal, like a snake or wolf.  Hear her thoughts on YouTube (http://youtu.be/F2208mZ6gAw?t=19m46s). Llyn has spent her whole life studying, observing, and leading trips to visit Shamans in several regions including Central America and Asia. During these encounters she has seen shapeshifting into animal, plants, or elements of nature. In terms of animal shapeshifting, Llyn has not witnessed with her eyes an actual transformation of a Shaman turning into an animal. What she did observe, however, was just as interesting. The Bird people in the High Andes and in the Asian Steps would wear a feathered headdress or large feathered wings on their backs. The feathered articles represent the spirit animals of the Shamans. The people would wear this while the Shamans performed their healing. While never seeing animal transformations, Llyn has seen non-ordinary things happen, like balls of light in the sky where Shamans shift into balls of light. http://www.allthingshealing.com/Shamanism/Time-Space-and-Dreaming/8799#.VHZ12mTF9-Y and http://www.olympicmountainearthwisdomcircle.org/shaman_from_the_stars_by_llyn_roberts.php. I, too, have seen something similar in a class I took with James Van Praagh, a reputable spiritual medium. James called these spirit beings that showed up as balls of light “orbs”.  During this class, we turned the lights down low and everyone started taking pictures with their phones. I saw nothing. However, I was shocked when I looked at the photos taken. It showed big orbs and some had faces within them. It was freaky….but super cool. Aside from the unorthodox effect of what was seen, it still somehow makes sense. If we are energy forms, then we should be able to shift energetically into balls of light. How would you describe the healing environment during a visit with a Shaman? Llyn Roberts described a healing ritual that she took part in. She emphasized how healing in these cultures are very different than our Western understanding of healing at the doctor’s office. To begin with, healing takes place in a village, as opposed to some private room in a clinic with soft music playing. The setting is most likely at someone’s house with grazing animals nearby and people bustling around. Plus, there are other villagers watching you. The power of community is a healing force within itself and this idea of communal healing is something that the inhabitants of these villages believe in. In addition, the healing energy is environmental, which means anyone in the vicinity will get the same healing benefits as the client being healed. How would you describe what it felt like to get a healing from a Shaman? Llyn Roberts describes her healing ceremony with a Shaman, where “shapeshifting tools” like water, plants, and stones were applied directly to her nude body. These tools are the elements that are bringing balance and harmony during the healing. In a Shamanic healing practice, it is the fire, water, stones and spirits that are doing the work. The Shaman’s role is to engage the heart and mind and to bring their spirit helpers to facilitate the healing. During the ceremony, Llyn felt that she got “her out of her head” and was able to quickly connect with her body.  She described being fully immersed by the elements and further explained, “When you end the process, you have merged with the elements from the process. It opens your heart. It opens your senses.  You feel like you have come home”. How would you describe a healing setting during a visit with a Shaman? Llyn Roberts describes a healing ritual that she took part of in a village. She emphasized how healing in these cultures are very different than our Western understanding of healing at a doctors.  First of all, the clients is not in a private closed room with soft music playing.  It’s more likely that you are in someone’s house with grazing animals nearby and people bustling around.  Plus, there are other villagers watching you.  The community attends because the power of community is a healing force in itself.  In addition, the healing energy is environmental, which means anyone in the vicinity will get the same benefits as the client who is being healed. Llyn leads groups of people to these ceremonies She described being a witness to healing miracles from people with life-threatening illnesses such as cancer to those that are unable to have children or have other extreme forms of imbalance in their lives. Each of her guests encountered a different experience that allowed them to experience themselves in fresh ways with a renewed sense of balance. What is it like being a practitioner in a fire practice? Llyn Roberts describes her fire healing practice.  “First, you are opening and breathing deep within the earth and with the earth. The Shapeshifter or Shaman serves as  a conduit for energy, which means that they are always shapeshifting and merging with the energy. It’s not the Shaman or the shapeshifter or their ego that is doing the healing during this practice. Instead, the power is coming from the earth. Once connected, you are breathing in the sacred energies. For the Shaman’s in Ecuador, it is their sacred water and volcanoes that they are working with. Then you open your heart to merge with the fire – the living spirit to which the Shaman develops a real relationship with. If you aren’t in the right relationship with the fire you can get burned.” When Llyn performs these ceremonies, she places alcohol in her mouth and literally breathes fire onto her clients.  Hear the description of her practice. Click here to experience shapeshifting(http://youtu.be/F2208mZ6gAw?t=24m). Here are a few steps to follow: Close your eyes. And take a few deep cleansing breaths. Think of a dilemma – something that you are having an issue with or that bothers you (e.g.- pesticide use in environment) Tune into your emotion and label them. Are you angery, disappointed, outraged, or do you feel sad hopeless or confused? Let go of the negative thoughts. Take a few more deep cleansing breaths. Go back to your childhood memories. Think of something in nature that you had affinity with.  It could be a tree or a flower, a stuffed animal or a childhood pet. Think about this being from nature and allow your senses to emerge. Try to see, feel, touch, smell and hear it as if it’s right in front of you. Become aware of the subtle qualities – the gentleness, unique colors or graceful presence). You will begin to shapeshift and take on the form of your chosen nature being. The merging will fit like a glove. There are 2 ways to merge. Imagine the tree, flower, animal or whichever is your chosen nature being, is just a few feet in front of you. Enter the nature being as if you could walk right into that tree, flower, animal, etc. and take on its form. Imagine that your body is morphing into the full form of that being. For example, if you were morphing into the tree, you would morph into it’s branches, trunk, and roots. Sense what it feels like when your body takes this form. Continue to feel and then bring into your awareness the dilemma in #2. Looking through the consciousness of this nature being. Look through the eyes of the nature’s being and see how your perception changes. How would this being see your problem from its perspective? Look at the issue through all sides and see it through that nature being’s perception. Let the focus on that dilemma dissolve. Relax and come back to merging with that nature being and its form. Now, make the transition back into your form. Morph back into your own body and consciousness. Step back from the form and come back to the present. Take a few deep, cleansing breaths as you transform back to your full self.   About Llyn Roberts -Award-winning Author, Teacher of Healing and Shamanism      Llyn Roberts, MA – aka “Cedar” – is a prominent teacher of healing and shamanism.
