To celebrate the 45th anniversary of becoming the only 20-game winner in Montréal Expos history, Ross Grimsley joins the boys to look back at October 1, 1978 (and the unlikely Hall of Famer who led the way), that time he and the Baltimore Orioles pitching staff made their way backstage at “Saturday Night Live” and into the good graces of John Belushi, hanging out with KISS, giving up Roberto Clemente's last home run, being on the field for Jackie Robinson's last public appearance, his special relationship with Thurman Munson and, for some reason…pickleball.
Today I welcome Shawn Anderson (@HOVG) from the Hall of Very Good Podcast. He is also a Ross Grimsley super collector! We discuss his Grimsley collection, the HOVG podcast, and how he developed his ability to land great guests and have some great conversations. With the series tied at a game apiece, we now move to Shea Stadium in Queens for the rest of the NLCS. Despite winning only 82 games to the Reds' 99, the Mets will have a chance to host three games in this short series. And with the series even, that could turn out to be a huge advantage for this scrappy team. Pete Rose has been the spark so far for the Cincinnati, homering off of Tom Seaver late in Game 1. Future Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench won that game with a walk-off homer. Rusty Staub and Cleon Jones played hero for New York in Game 2, and will look to bolster up an otherwise anemic offense. Games 3 and 4 will be matchups between left-handers: Jerry Koosman (14 - 15 2.84 ERA 263 IP) then George Stone (12 - 3 2.80 ERA 148 IP) for the Mets versus Ross Grimsley (13 - 10 3.23 ERA 242 IP) then Fred Norman (12 - 8 3.30 ERA 166 IP) for the Reds. If they split those games, then Game 5 will be a rematch for the right-handed aces: Tom Seaver (19 - 10 2.08 ERA 290 IP) and Jack Billingham (19 - 10 3.04 ERA 293 IP). Whoever wins this best two out of three will have a date in the World Series. The other will be looking at a long off-season. Audio clips from Classic Baseball on the Radio Youtube channel. As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, boxscores, background information, and much, much more. Catch you next time, P.C.O.
Yeah, Wild Card weekend was mostly a dud. But Glenn's not going to campaign for less football games because of it (from a gambling perspective he probably should though). Early in today's show, "The NFL Chick" Syreeta Hubbard joined us to discuss our NFL Playoff watch event at Live! Casino Hotel this Sunday and why she DOES think the #7 seeds should go from the playoffs. We then dished out our season long "Pats On The Ass" for the Ravens. At the top of Hour 2, our friend Ross Grimsley checked in to discuss the Orioles moving the left field wall back and why he does think it will help them sign some pitchers. At the bottom of Hour 2, our weekly chat with 105.7 The Fan's Jeremy Conn covered the Playoffs, the wall, random guests, agreeable music for diverse groups and more. And we wrapped the show by dishing out our season long "Slaps To The Helmet."

Have analytics ruined fast breaks? Vaccines and more...
An extremely busy #WouldYouRatherWednesday edition of GCR. Would you rather the Orioles go all-in and call up Adley Rutschman now, make the playoffs and keep the Yankees out OR avoid starting his clock but miss the playoffs while the Yankees get hot and make the World Series? Late in Hour 1, former three time Super Bowl champion Patriots safety Je'Rod Cherry (now with ESPN Radio Cleveland and the Browns Radio Network) joined us to preview Sunday's season opener-what should we expect from a Kevin Stefanski-lead team? ANd late in Hour 2, filmmaker Troy Lowman joined the show to discuss his new documentary "Ghosts of 33rd Street," looking into the transition from the Colts to the Ravens in Baltimore.
Very busy Tuesday edition of GCR. The NBA might not be happening after all and Rob Manfred is not a popular man after his comments on ESPN. Early in the show, former Orioles pitcher and MLB rep Jeremy Guthrie joined us to explain what these types of negotiations are like and why it's difficult for players to give up anything even in an odd one year capacity. Later in Hour 1, we met Orioles 5th round pick Carter Baumler-the high school pitcher from Iowa who the Birds were able to get by going over slot. Early in Hour 2, Maryland legend Len Elmore joined us to discuss the decision that faces NBA players regarding whether returning to play would simply be a distraction from the #BlackLivesMatter issue at hand. At the bottom of Hour 2, our friend Ross Grimsley checked in to further discuss the issue facing MLB players and we wrapped the show by chatting with Baltimore's own Brian Jordan (Milford Mill) about being with the Cardinals during the Summer of 1998 (as seen in "Long Gone Summer"), how he views what happened in light of the push against steroids as well as whether black baseball players should push for players to consider not playing right now.
The owners have an agreement! Does that mean baseball is coming back? Not necessarily. We discussed that at the start of today's show, transitioning into a fun #FinishThis and more. Late in Hour 1, former Maryland guard (now High Point assistant coach) Keith Gatlin joined us to discuss playing in Michael Jordan vs. Len Bias games, whether Bias could have been Jordan's contemporary in the NBA and what he expects from his former protege Aaron Wiggins now in his third year in College Park. At the top of Hour 2, Ross Grimsley checked in to discuss his new Zoom show with Stan The Fan and whether MLB will come back at all. And near the bottom of Hour 2, Maryland commit Julian Reese (St. Frances) joined to discuss joining his sister Angel (an incoming freshman) in College Park in 2021. And then...nachos.
What. A. Day. We'll get to all of the Marshal Yanda stuff BUT FIRST our friend Dr. Brad Lerner from Chesapeake Urology is here to talk vasectomies. Well, Glenn having a vasectomy anyway. Glenn and Dr. Lerner are launching a new podcast about a topic that sometimes men aren't all that comfortable talking about openly. After that, our friend Bobby Trosset from WBAL and 98 Rock joined us in studio to reflect on Marshal Yanda's career in Baltimore, what it means moving forward and more. We then talked with Bobby about his first year working in Baltimore-Glenn knew him as a student at Loyola-getting to cover such a special Ravens run and more. Fox Sports 1 analyst/former Stanford & NBA guard Casey Jacobsen joined us near the bottom of the hour to talk about the Terps as they get ready for the start of the Big Ten Tournament-what will it take for them to make a big postseason run? We tried to figure out JUST how young Bobby is late in Hour 2 with some old guy/young guy references and then-hey look, Ross Grimsley is here! And to wrap the show, our friends Bradley & Nikki Bozeman checked in while driving through the mountains in Utah to discuss what Marshal Yanda has meant to them and their continued anti-bullying efforts!
It may be cold in Baltimore, but baseball is heating up. Bill Ladson kicks off the second hour with his weekly segment talking all things baseball, and Howard Bender of Fantasy Alarm joins us later to talk some fantasy baseball.
The Cleveland Indians continued to compete in the AL East of MLB throughout the 1980's. Cleveland Municipal Stadium remained the team's beloved ballpark on Lake Erie downtown. He believes baseball is in peril and we dove head-first into it. Later in the hour, a #FinishThis-what did a woman get arrested for after a traffic stop in Florida. It's Florida, so it's EXACTLY what you'd expect. At the top of Hour 2, UMBC soccer coach Pete Caringi joined us to preview his team's season-how to they make the jump after falling short in the America East championship game a year ago? Also-does he think the offsides thing has gotten as out of hand as we do? And then we pick apart Warren Sharp's column about Lamar Jackson and why the Indianapolis Star would do a ranking of combined Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts players.
So much happening on a Tuesday GCR. We begin the program with Ross Grimsley in studio to discuss...whatever he wants to discuss. He's got a great Harry Caray story, thoughts on why he doesn't like the Atlantic League's experimental rules and more. Rounding out the show, we'll talk with MLB.com columnist Richard Justice
The NBA Finals are decidedly...WEIRD. Ross Grimsley stuck around to start today's show-we discussed the Kevin Durant injury-getting Ross' perspective as an athlete as to whether he would want to have final say on a decision to play in such a huge situation. We also discussed some lingering baseball topics-the Bumgarner/Muncy back and forth, bunting in a no-hitter, extending nets, etc. Then more NBA Finals conversation. Early in Hour 2, former Terps/NBA forward & NBC Sports Washington analyst Tony Massenburg checked in to discuss why he believes Golden State still has a chance to rally all the way back in the series. And late in Hour 2, new Navy lacrosse coach Joe Amplo checked in to discuss the possibility of the Mids being a "sleeping giant" in the lacrosse world.
So in the end, it's Rutschman. I think we all kind of assumed that's how it was going to go. Our pal Ross Grimsley stuck around the Live! Casino Hotel Studio after The Ross Grimsley Show to discuss the Orioles' #1 pick...and testicles. Early in Hour 2, the only OTHER #1 pick in Orioles history-ESPN College Baseball analyst Ben McDonald-joined us to discuss Rutschman and offered some advice about how to handle the insane attention he's about to receive. And at the bottom of Hour 2, Adley Rutschman's dad-long time catching coach in Oregon Randy Rutschman joined us to discuss his son being taken by Baltimore.
Our pal Ross Grimsley remains in studio as open a Tuesday edition of GCR. He actually thinks the Orioles should select Bobby Witt Jr. with the #1 pick over Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman. We discuss that and more with the former Orioles pitcher. Also-Glenn usually hates dynasties but can't root against the Warriors. Is it just because Steph Curry is so damn likable? In Hour 2, former MLB pitcher Bobby Witt joined us to discuss his son and why his son would be the right choice for the Orioles. After that, new Baltimore City Council President Brandon Scott joined us to discuss the future of Preakness at Pimlico and why he believes the city and Stronach Group can still come to an agreement. And we wrapped the show by chatting with new Morgan State basketball coach Kevin Broadus about the challenge he's taking on now after leaving Maryland.
Glenn is back and brought a few L-B's with him. We have much to discuss, from New Orleans eating to absinthe drinking and since Ross Grimsley stuck around after The Ross Grimsley Show, we figured we'd even talk a little Orioles. Is John Means for real? When do you start thinking about promoting Ryan Mountcastle? After that we discussed the NBA's Conference Finals being set. At the top of Hour 2, we Chased Glory presented by Glory Days Grill. Kelly Rubley-the trainer for "Alwaysmining"-joined us to discuss her horses's chances of becoming the first Maryland-bred horse to win the Preakness since 1983 and her chances of being the first female trainer to win the Preakness ever. At the bottom of Hour 2, ESPN's Booker Corrigan joined us in studio to recap the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Loyola GK Jacob Stover checked in after a monumental 17 save effort against Syracuse and Maryland's Louis Dubick discussed playing hero in OT in their win at Towson.

It's been 46 years since Ross Grimsley threw his first Major League pitch. Since then, the longtime hurler (and the last Montreal Expo to win 20 games) has been the subject of many rumors. From hair grease to allegations of witchcraft...it's time to play "True or False".
Finally, Ross Grimsley joins the boys to dispel internet rumors, explain how he got the nickname "Scuz" and share what he thinks about being the logo for The Hall of Very Good.
