Welcome to the Friday News Flyover for November 3, 2023. I'm Sean Diller. This week: Medicaid chaos in red states around the country | Cannabis legalization on the ballot in Ohio | Pennsylvania Democrats have returned triple the mail ballots compared with their Republican neighbors | Colorado voters consider two statewide ballot initiatives, and | It's Britneyhttps://missouriindependent.com/2023/11/02/medicaid-unwinding-breeds-chaos-in-states-as-millions-lose-coverage/Medicaid ‘unwinding' breeds chaos in states as millions lose coverageBY: PHIL GALEWITZ, KATHERYN HOUGHTON, BRETT KELMAN AND SAMANTHA LISS - NOVEMBER 2, 2023 11:34 AM More than two dozen people lined up outside a state public assistance office in Montana before it opened to ensure they didn't get cut off from Medicaid.Callers in Missouri and Florida reported waiting on hold for more than two hours on hotlines to renew their Medicaid coverage. The parents of a disabled man in Tennessee who had been on Medicaid for three decades fought with the state this summer to keep him enrolled as he lay dying from pneumonia in a hospital.Since the expiration of COVID-era protections earlier this year, states have reviewed the eligibility of more than 28 million people and terminated coverage for over 10 million of them. Millions more are expected to lose Medicaid in the coming months. The Medicaid disenrollment rates of people reviewed so far vary dramatically by state, largely along a blue-red political divide, from a low of 10% in Illinois to a high of 65% in Texas.“I feel like Illinois is doing everything in their power to ensure that as few people lose coverage as possible,” said Paula Campbell of the Illinois Primary Health Care Association, which represents dozens of community health centers.Camille Richoux, health policy director for the nonprofit Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families said, “It's not just bad, but worse than people can imagine. This has not been about determining who is eligible using all possible means, but how we can kick people off by all possible means.”The unprecedented enrollment drop comes after federal protections ended this spring that had prohibited states from removing people from Medicaid during the three pandemic years. Since March 2020, enrollment in Medicaid and the related Children's Health Insurance Program had surged by more than 22 million to reach 94 million people in the U.S.The process of reviewing recipients' eligibility has been anything but smooth for many Medicaid enrollees, and some suspect particular states have used the confusing system to discourage enrollment. But gaps in coverage can jeopardize people's access to health services - or their financial security - if they get medical bills for care they cannot postpone.Pam Shaw, a pediatrician in Kansas City, Kansas, who chairs the American Academy of Pediatrics' state government affairs committee said, “Any type of care that's put off — whether it's asthma, whether it's autism, whether it's something as simple as an earache — can just get worse if you wait,”Doctors and representatives of community health centers around the country said they have seen an uptick in cancellations and no-shows among patients without coverage — including children. Nationwide, states have already disenrolled at least 1.8 million children in the 20 states that provide the data by age. Children typically qualify more easily than adults, so child advocates believe many kids are being wrongly terminated based on their parents' being deemed no longer eligible. In Texas, 68% of those disenrolled from Medicaid were children, compared with 16% in Massachusetts, according to KFF. In September, President Joe Biden's administration said most states were conducting eligibility checks incorrectly and inappropriately disenrolling eligible children or household members. The administration ordered states to reinstate coverage for some 500,000 people.Idaho, one of a few states that completed the unwind in six months, said it disenrolled 121,000 people of the 153,000 recipients it reviewed as of September because it suspected they were no longer eligible. Of those kicked off, about 13,600 signed up for private coverage on the state's ACA marketplace, according to Pat Kelly, executive director of Your Health Idaho, the state's exchange. What happened to the rest, state officials say they don't know.Nationwide, about 71% of Medicaid enrollees terminated during the unwinding have been cut because of procedural issues - meaning they could actually still qualify for Medicaid, but lost it anyway. ‘People are not getting through'In many states, enrollees have faced long waits to get help with renewals. The worst phone waits were in Missouri, according to a KFF Health News review of letters the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services sent to states in August. In the letter to Missouri's Medicaid program, CMS said it was concerned that the average wait time of 48 minutes and the 44% rate of Missourians abandoning those calls in May was “impeding equitable access” to assistance and patients' ability to maintain coverage. Some people are waiting on hold more than three hours, said Sunni Johnson, an enrollment worker at Affinia Healthcare, which runs community health centers in the St. Louis area. That's a significant hurdle for people with inflexible jobs and other barriers. In Florida, which has removed over 730,000 people from the program since April, enrollees earlier this year were waiting almost 2½ hours on a Spanish-language call center, according to a report from UnidosUS, a civil rights advocacy group. The Spanish versions of the Medicaid application, renewal website, and other communications are also confusing, said Jared Nordlund, the Florida director for UnidosUS.Some Medicaid recipients are seeking help through the courts. In a 2020 class-action lawsuit against Tennessee that seeks to pause the Medicaid eligibility review, parents of recipients describe spending hours on the phone or online with the state Medicaid program, trying to ensure their children's insurance coverage is not lost. One of those parents, Donna Guyton, said in a court filing that Tennessee's Medicaid program, called TennCare, sent a June letter revoking the coverage of her 37-year-old son, Patrick, who had been eligible for Medicaid because of disabilities since he was 6. As Guyton made calls and filed appeals to protect her son's insurance, he was hospitalized with pneumonia, then spent weeks there before dying in late July.“While Patrick was fighting for his life, TennCare was threatening to take away his health insurance coverage and the services he relied on,” she said in a court filing. “Though we should have been able to focus on Patrick's care, our family was required to navigate a system that kept denying his eligibility and putting his health coverage at risk.”TennCare said in a court filing Patrick Guyton's Medicaid coverage was never actually revoked — the termination letter was sent to his family because of an “error.”Phil Galewitz in Washington, D.C., wrote this article. Or when you get ‘em anyway.Issue 2, an initiative that would legalize recreational marijuana for people over 21 in Ohio, is on the ballot in next Tuesday's election. An economic analysis released last week found that the benefits of legalizing cannabis in Ohio would outweigh the costs by a quarter-billion dollars a year.A study by Columbus-based Scioto Analysis attempts to identify the pluses and minuses that would come with legalization. To do the analysis, the group used studies from states such as Washington and Colorado, where recreational weed has long been the law. To examine how the pros and cons identified in those states might play out in Ohio, the researchers looked at economic and census data, as well as crime statistics.with its 10% excise tax on top of Ohio's normal sales tax, passage of Issue 2 would produce $190 million a year, according to the report. Then there are the jobs the new industry would create. The report predicts that Ohio will add roughly 3,300 new jobs in the first year after legalization. Assuming these jobs are full time and pay matches the average wage across the state of Ohio, this will amount to about $190 million in wage benefits for workers across the state. And if weed is no longer illegal for adults over 21, it stands to reason that there will be fewer arrests. The report said using data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Report on the number of cannabis-related arrests in Ohio, they estimate there would be about 4,400 fewer arrests per year if recreational cannabis were legalized. Adding up the cost of those arrests, and assuming that 6% of those people would have been convicted of felonies, this amounts to over $38 million in savings for Ohio.”Overall, study estimated Ohioans would receive $260 million in annual benefits if Issue 2 passes this coming Tuesday. https://www.penncapital-star.com/blog/mail-in-ballot-returns-top-half-a-million-2023-election-mailbag/Dems far outpacing Republicans in mail and absentee ballots returnedMail-in ballot returns top half a million | 2023 Election MailbagBY: CASSIE MILLER - NOVEMBER 1, 2023 2:00 PM Here are the numbers: As of Nov. 1, Pennsylvania voters requested a total of 1,026,227 absentee and mail-in ballots.Of that number, 90% requested a mail-in ballot and 10% requested an absentee ballot ahead of the municipal election.Registered Democrats requested 723,746 mail-in and absentee ballots compared to 215,286 Republicans and 87,195 requests from “other” registered voters. So about 3 of every 4Of the 570,000 ballots returned so far statewide, 417,829 - or about 3 of every 4 - were ballots from registered Democrats and 114,149 were from those registered as Republicans. https://coloradonewsline.com/2023/10/01/proposition-hh-proposition-ii/Colorado voters will decide on two statewide measures this election, both of which were referred to the ballot by the state Legislature.First, Proposition HHIf approved, Proposition HH would lower property tax rates over the next 10 years and allow the state to keep more money than it would otherwise be obligated to return to taxpayers. If Proposition HH passes, the residential assessment rate would be reduced to 6.7% from 6.765% until 2032. Proposition HH would also raise the amount of tax revenue the state can keep — set by the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights — by 1%. The new revenue allowed would be used to backfill property tax revenue that local governments would miss out on, for things like public education. $20MM would also be set aside for a rental assistance program. The proposition is backed by the Democratic lawmakers who voted to put it on the ballot and by Demoratic Gov. Jared Polis, as well as by other liberal groups, unions, AARP and the League of Women Voters. They say the proposal is a responsible solution to rising property taxes while still keeping schools funded. https://variety.com/2023/music/news/britney-spears-memoir-the-woman-in-me-sales-publisher-1235768414/It's BritneyBritney Spears‘ long-awaited memoir “The Woman in Me” — which details her fight for freedom and tumultuous relationships with the men in her life — has sold 1.1 million copies in its first week across print, pre-sales, e-books and audiobooks in the United States.“The Woman in Me” was released on Oct. 24 and has officially been out for just over a week. The memoir is 275 pages long and the audiobook is read by actress Michelle Williams. 1979 ALCS Game One - 10/3/79 - Memorial Stadium - Baltimore, Maryland California Angels For the first time in their 19 year history, the California Angels (88 - 74) are in the playoffs! The trade for former MVP and seven time batting champ Rod Carew has paid off immediately. The Angels have the league's top offense, lead by an MVP performance by Don Baylor (.296/.371/.530 36 HR 139 RBI 145 OPS+) and bolstered by bounce back All-Star seasons from 2B Bobby Grich (.294/.365/.537 30 HR 101 RBI 145 OPS+) and C Brian Downing (.326/.418/.482 12 HR 75 RBI 142 OPS+). Nolan Ryan, Dave Frost, and Frank Tanana hold down the rotation, and rookie righty Mark Clear is the lone star out of the pen. Former All Star shortstop Jim Fregosi (who was famously traded for his star righty Ryan earlier this decade) is at the helm for California, in just his first full season as a manager. This feel-good team, these "Yes We Can" Angels have a tall task ahead of them in their first ever postseason series. Baltimore Orioles Pitching, defense, and three-run homers. That's how Earl Weaver's Orioles (102 - 57) get it done. This season marks the sixth American League East crown since '69 for Baltimore, and while the lineups and rotations have changed, their style of play has not. Sure, Jim Palmer, Mark Belanger, and Al Bumbry are still there, but gone are the Robinsons (Brooks and Frank), Boog Powell, Davey Johnson, Dave McNally, and Mike Cuellar, just to name a few. The rotation is strong once again, led by Cy Young winner Mike Flanagan, as well as Scott McGregor and Dennis Martinez. The bullpen is reliable, with Don Stanhouse and Tippy Martinez always on call. And the lineup is dangerous, with stars Eddie Murray (.295/.369/.475 25 HR 99 RBI 130 OPS+) and Ken Singleton (.295/.405/.533 35 HR 111 RBI 155 OPS+) packing plenty of punch in the heart of the order. The role players always shine under Weaver, with Gary Roenicke, Pat Kelly, and utility-man John Lowenstein providing timely hits time and again. Game one of this series is a matchup of legends: Jim Palmer (10 - 6 3.30 ERA 155 IP) vs. Nolan Ryan (16 - 14 3.60 ERA 222 IP). Both have struggled with injuries and inconsistency throughout the year; however, they will bring their best in the playoffs and keep their teams in it. Neither will factor in the decision, as this tight ballgame will go into extra innings. From there, an unexpected hero will shine. Tune in for a thrilling start to the 1979 postseason! Can you feel it, listener? I can. I can feel it. The warm, sultry breeze of our impending Succotash hiatus is gently wafting around the next bend in our feed. I'm your every-other-weekly-host Marc Hershon and welcome to Episode 352, which I'm calling “Last Clips Before Hiatus” because, well, it's our second-to-last episode before we take a break BUT the last one in which we'll be featuring clips. I'll tell you more about what our LAST show before jump the tracks is going to be like toward this end of this blog entry but, for now, let's share this time together as just another in the long lines of Succotash episodes where we feature clips from other comedy soundcasts across the internet. Before I get to what I have in store for you, let's recall what Epi351, Tyson Saner's final solo hosting episode before the break, was like last week. His was the first episode to officially enter our 12th year of soundcasting. We started in April of 2011 so Tyson got the glory and the honor of being the first of us to break the tape on year 12 with “The Penultimate Pre-Hiatus Show”, which featured clips from comedy soundcasts Holidays After Dark, What Went Wrong, and Bit Weird But Fair Enough (I Guess). Tyson wrapped up that episode with a very sincere thanks and farewell for now and I think you'll get a great deal out of listening to that installment of the show. As for me, I'm intending to go out with this show as it was originally conceived: By featuring a collection of clips from soundcasts that we've not featured before. Sure, we've occasionally dipped back into the same pool now and again to feature some faves – but our overall design and intent has been to bring you what's fresh and new, at least our ears and quite possibly yours. Bearing that in mind, I have clips from Literally with Rob Lowe, a new sitcom soundcast called Popcorn For Dinner, and a show from across the Pond in England – a well-regarded standby there called Always Be Comedy. Since this will be our last opportunity to do so for awhile, I'm going to feature an audio essay from comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul, from his Slices blog, entitled “Slave to the Machines”. This lovely cavalcade of clippage is brought to you, as always, by Henderson's Pants and their new Bottoms Up Cargo Pants, a recent introduction designed by our own announcer, Bill Heywatt, for that discriminating boozehound on the go. As I said, toward the end of this episode I let you know what's in store for the final-final episode next week, as well as a few wrap-up thoughts from my brain and my heart as we hit our 12th year anniversary. CLIPS Literally with Rob Lowe Is there more of a consummate celebrity in the entertainment world today than Rob Lowe? He's an actor who has created an indelible brand for and of himself, he's never really had any controversy around him, and he's basically a Hollywood homegrown talent who's been around since he was a kid. A few yeas ago he started popping up as a guest on a number of soundcasts and it wasn't long until he pulled the cloak off of Literally, the show he hosts every week, mostly talking to friends that he pulls right out of his own cell phone. He recently talk with Levar Burton, famous for playing Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Before that, he broke through as Kunta Kinte, a young slave on the Roots miniseries. And he talks a bit about both those experiences in this clip. Popcorn For Dinner This next entry is brand new. It's only been out for about 8 or 9 weeks at this point, which means its first season is coming to a close and you can binge it. Because it's one of the first full-on soundcast situation comedies that I've heard. Popcorn for Dinner is, first of all, produced by one of my favorite production outfits on the planet, which is Kelly&Kelly out of Vancouver, Canada. We've featured other shows from them before, including This Sounds Serious and Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You. This new offering is largely written and created by comedian Maddy Kelly – no relation to Pat Kelly or Chris Kelly, who ARE related, but maybe it helps to have them set a show up if your last name IS Kelly. It features former Nickelodean star Ciara Bravo as the narrator, and stars Maddy Kelly, Charlie Foster, Jillian Ebanks and Ben Fawcett as four friends in their early 20s as they try to make it on their own, despite the fact that none of them know what that looks like...at all. It's got all the tropes that make classic sitcoms identifiable including a laugh track. It's meta, it's corny, it's funny and – after I listened to the first three episodes, I was pretty much hooked. The clip I have for you is from Episode 6 and I picked the very opening of the show so you can easily pick up on the vibe – they have the opening teaser scene, the set-up for the episode and your get to hear what the main characters each sound like. Always Be Comedy I'm not sure how long Always Be Comedy has been cranking out episode in Britain but, given their list of guests, it's been going awhile. Hosted by comics James Gill and Tim Lewis, they invite other comedians in to chat and to curate their dream gig – o talk about all the elements that they would bring together to make a dynamite boffo show. This clip doesn't quite get to that part of the hosts' chat with guest, England comedy legend Stewart Lee, which is well worth strapping in for given his experience. Instead, Stewart waxes on a bit about some of his contemporary veteran comedians. Dan St. Paul: Slave to the Machines Which brings us to the end of our featured clips this week and right up to the doorstep of comedian and friend of the show Dan St. Paul. He's been writing these humorous essays for his “Slices” blog on Substack for a while now, and I had him record a few and then added some music and effects to them. That was impetus enough for Dan to turn to his pal Jimmy Goings and really get into producing them. Here's his latest, entitled “Slave to the Machines”. That is going to do it for this final solo episode before our Succotash hiatus begins. As I teased at the top of the show, I can let you know that next week, for our 12th Anniversary Show, Tyson Saner and I will be joining forces to celebrate the blessed event. Joining us will be longtime friend of the show who we first met in Episode 36 back in the Fall of 2012, Travis Clark. We'll look back and reminisce not just about Succotash but also about soundcasting and how far it come since we first fired up the mics in 2011. That's next week, in this very same feed, so don't miss it! As for me, I am sometime startled to wake up and discover this Succotash thing has been going as long as it has. I've made a lot of friends, literally around the globe, through the network of soundcasters out there. I think one of the things that we'll do as we sail into our 12th year is that I may just have to stop beating the drum to call these things soundcasts instead of podcasts. We gave it a valiant effort. I don't think anyone would deny us that. We'll see. I have to thank Joe Paulino, first and foremost, which helped me breathe life into this concept through the auspices of Studio P, his “home of the hit” in Sausalito, California. And for introducing us to Bill Heywatt, our erstwhile and often tanked booth announcer. Scott Carvey, one of Dana Carvey's brothers, created our theme music from me sending him a jazz tune I liked and doing his own interpretation of the concept so we could have some music free and clear. Kenny Durgis is our booth assistant who, frankly doesn't do much more than complain but we gotta acknowledge the little guy. More than anyone connected to the show, my heartfelt and deep gratitude goes to Tyson Saner, who went from contributing a few odd clips now and again to becoming the show's Associate Producer to full-blown host, slipping into the Big Chair for several years while it stepped into the background as Executive Producer and got to take a big breather. I would be remiss if I didn't thank my wife, the lovely and talented Debra Hershon. While she's never spent a moment hanging around this show, if not for her support and giving me the space to create and shave time off of our personal time – sometimes on while on vacation and sometimes even urging me to head to LA or shows in San Francisco so I could get interviews and such, this show certainly wouldn't have happened. Finally, of course, there's you. Our listener. Whether this is the very first time you've filled your ears with Succotash or if you've been with us for every one of the 352 episodes we've dropped, this has always been intended for you. As a wayfinding tool to help you hack through the soundcast wilderness to find fun, new shows to listen to. And whether it was from those heady early days when we actually would show up on the front page of Apple's downloads or, more often bouncing along with just blips on the download radar, we know that you've been out there putting up with our audio shenanigans. So thank you, thank you, thank you. We'll be here next year with that 12th anniversary show. And then Tyson, Bill, Joe, and I are going to take a little break. Catch our breaths and figure out how and when we'll return. This show maybe exactly like you hear it today. Or we may change up the format and try some different things. Hang in there and we'll let you know what's what. And in the meantime, if in the next week or so you have someone tap you on the shoulder while you're working out in the gym and they ask what you're listening to on your earbuds, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

On this vault episode of the show, I am delighted to have two guests join me. First up is fellow Canadian, thought leader, and podcast host Dexter Guff, host of Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You (And You Can Be Too) and following his appearance, I speak with his alter ego, comedic performer Peter Oldring. While Dexter and I discuss a lot of the usual lifehackery stuff, Peter and I dive deeper into what makes Dexter tick. We talk about how he and his colleagues Pat Kelly and Chris Kelly (no relation) came up with the idea of doing Dexter's reaction the show has received so far, how the show is crafted every week, and where the show is headed. This is a different kind of episode – and a little longer than usual – but it's a fun one. The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: Beware what you read in reporting about A.G. Paxton versus the Texas Whistleblower Act. The press would be making opposite arguments, and they'd be right, if the A.G. were a beloved Democrat. Rightly, Lieutenant Governor Patrick and Governor Abbott have urged the Texas Supreme Court to take up the issue involving Paxton. The Democrat 3rd Court of Appeals was seriously wrong in ruling Paxton's top aides had protection under the Act as they are inferior officers hired directly by an elected official answerable to the people. Representative government cannot work if elected people are not able to pick and choose, hire and fire, people to move their, the official's, policy agenda. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Anti-Wimp update.Interview with Pat Kelly, Lubbock city council District 1 candidate.Interview with Charles Byrn, Abilene city council candidate for Place 6.And, other news of Texas.Listen on the radio, or station stream, at 5pm Central. “Woody Farmer's Bay Area Wresting” is a new documentary available on YouTube, and it tells the true story about a little wrestling school turned promotion based in Newark, California, which is just East of San Francisco, run by Woody Farmer. Woody secured a TV deal for Bay Area Wrestling almost before he had a true promotion up and running, and taped the shows in a tiny studio at the TV station. He soon landed a network deal with The Sports Channel, and had talent like Mae Young, Mike Lockwood (aka Crash Holly), Radical Robbie Lee, and a young Chris Jericho wrestling matches in his tiny studio! Documentary filmmakers Paul Ponte and Jesus Cruz, along with the voice of Bay Area Wrestling, Pat Kelly, and wrestler Shane Kody (who is also Woody Farmer's son), discuss Bay Area Wrestling from its formation to landing their TV deal to Chris Jericho's three-match run, and what came after! They recount some of their favorite performers and matches, remember the unique personalities, and share some of the hilarious moments both in front of and behind the camera.
Hello, listener. Glad you're here! I am Marc Hershon, as stated so eloquently for our booth announcer, Bill Heywatt, here to present Episode 295 of Succotash, THE Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Before I get into what's in store this week, did you happen to catch last week's Epi294 with my punctual and well-read co-host Tyson Saner? He brought the heat, with clips from a trio of shows, including Wheel of Randy - A Randy Newman podcast, Podcast Killed the Video Star, and The Hollywood Experience. If you missed it run, don't walk, to download or stream it from any of the wonderful distribution points on the World Wide Web, including Apple & Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, YouTube, Soundcloud, Audible and many others, including our own homesite, SuccotashShow.com, where you're find a blog entry for every show we've done for the past 10 years and 11 months with clickable links to the shows and the social media accounts for the hosts and many of the guests. I just want to take a moment to acknowledge the international clown fiesta that Vladimir Putin is orchestrating on the people of Ukraine. There's not much that we, as the hosts of a comedy soundcast can do to actively help the situation. But we do stand in support of the people and country of Ukraine and, just as we're no longer distributing Succotash via that streaming service that Neil Young doesn't like, we also will not feature clips from any comedy soundcasts produced in Russia. It's not much but it's what we've got to offer. All right. Enough of that. Let me take your mind off the troubles of the day with the distraction of a quartet of soundcast clips that we have never featured before: Comedy Gold Minds with Kevin Hart, Hypochondriactor, The Extramundane with Max West, and a brand new offering on the podwaves entitled Let's Make A Sci-Fi. We're also brought to you this week, as usual, by Henderson's Pants and their Scavenger Slax! But that's not all, as they used to say on the Ginsu Knife and Ronco Pocket Fisherman ads on TV. I'm introducing a new “thing” on the show this week. San Francisco-based comedian Dan St. Paul, a friend of the show whose work we featured back in Episode 211, started a blog a while back during the pandemic lockdown called Slices. He writes up these funny essays and thought pieces about the absurdities of life. I've been suggesting he think about recording them and get them out there somehow and then it hit me: “Hey! I have a soundcast! A comedy soundcast! Dan could play them on our show!” So Dan cut his first one this week and we added in some music and some sound effects along the way. It's called, “The No Tube Alternative”, the first entry into the audio realm from Dan. St. Paul's Slices blog. You can read that one, and more than three dozen more at https://danstpaul.substack.com/. You can also follow him @DanStPaul on Twitter. Let me know what you thought – drop a note to m-a-r-c@SuccotashShow.com or hit me up @SuccotashShow on Twitter or Instagram. I think we're going to work up another one by the next time I'm back with Epi 297. And – this is confidential so don't spread it around – but Dan is in talks with Succotash Patch Productions to possibly release his own soundcast based on his Slices essays. CLIPS Comedy Gold MinesI don't think it's my imagination that Kevin Hart seems to be everywhere these days. He's got a series on Netflix called True Story, he's developing a hip-hop animated project for HBO Max, he was even in a Super Bowl commercial. His soundcast, Comedy Gold Minds, has been going for a while now, where he deep dives into the brains of well-known comics to find out what makes them tick. I clipped his chat with David Spade from a few weeks back, from a part of the convo where they get into what getting started on the standup stage was like. Let's Make A Sci-FiFans and friends of Succotash know that I am a nut for any soundcasts that come out of the funny factory that is Kelly&Kelly Productions. This Sounds Serious, Dexter Guff is Smarter Than You, and just scads of other crazy satirical stuff they pump out is all comedy gold. (Flip back to Succotash Epi221 for my chat with Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring, two of the main brains behind those shows, to learn more about how the humor sausage is made…) Now they are presenting Let's Make a Sci-Fi, and this is a show that's different than a lot of their mocku-style products. It's the 8-part adventure of three comedy writers - Ryan Beil, Maddy Kelly, and Mark Chavez – and their earnest attempt to write a pilot episode for a serious science fiction TV or streaming series. Here's a snippet from their first episode, where the three writers are spitballing ideas for what the core of the show might be about. HypochondriactorActor Sean Hayes, who you know from TV's Will & Grace, and from soundcasting's Smartless, is a bit of a hypochondriac and has parleyed his groundless fears and obsession with maladies into a soundcast that he co-hosts with Dr. Priyanka Wali, a legit doctor and comedian, to delve into the sick side of life. In what has to be considered a pretty good “get” for a soundcast guest, Sean pulls in pal Robert Downey, Jr. for last week's episode. They talk about a lot of stuff in just under an hour: Downey's penchant for Wing Chun Kung Fu, his thoughts on Iron Man's final words in Avengers: End Game, and his “Cat Scratch Fever”. You'll have to grab the download for a couple of those topics, but our clip does start to get into the whole Kung Fu thing. The Extramundane with Max WardIf you like creepy, cryptid-based, spooky soundcasts…you'll have to look further than The Extramundane with Max Ward. Why? Because it's a spoof of those kinds of shows. A bit in the vein of My Neighbors Are Dead, this show rips the veil away from the supernatural to reveal, well, like the title says, the extramundane. Host Max Ward is voiced by Dan Kozuh, a writer of fictional non-fiction for places like McSweeney's, The Hard Times, Infinite Worlds, and others. Our clip comes from Episode 6 – The Woman Who Raised Bigfoot, where Max tracks down and interviews, uh, the woman, L. Melacetti (Nicole Kemper), who raised Bigfoot. Or A bigfoot, who was left on her porch as a baby in 1964. Well, friend, there it is, then. Episode 295 is stocked, cocked and locked. I don't know if that's actually a thing. I DO know that my cohort in soundcasts, Tyson Saner, will be right here in this very feed next week host episode 296. So close to Epi300 that we can TASTE it! And next month is this show's ELEVENTH ANNIVERSARY in soundcasting. Some folks said it couldn't be done. A lot more folks said, “What's the show called again?”, followed immediately by, “How the hell do you spell Succotash?” Just remember S-U-C-C-O, the “sucko” part, and you'll be able to Google the crap out of us. Thanks once again to Dan St. Paul for letting us try out one of the Slices from his blog. We're hoping to try out another one next time I'm here, in Episode 297. Until you deign to hit us up again, won't you please keep yourself and those around you as healthy as you can, brush after every meal, be nice to each other and the next time you're buzzed by a low-flying cropduster and the pilot yells down to you, “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
