Tek & Prem welcome The Philly Quizmaster and co-owner of Shibe Vintage Sports, Johnny Goodtimes, on the VetLine to talk Birds, Sixers, and his unique Kobe Bryant meeting. The Eagles Preseason is less than 2 months away, and minicamps have been very interesting. With an infusion of youth and energy, the Super Bowl Champs are close to beginning their march towards a repeat Lombardi Trophy in the 2025 NFL Season. Jalen Hurts seems to have galvanized his doubters, who are out at an all-time high, but as we discuss, that may serve to blow up in all of their faces. Another dinner with Michael Jordan before a Super Bowl could be on the horizon. The Phillies will only compete for a World Series if some drastic moves are made at the trade deadline, and it remains to be seen if the Front Office shares that sentiment, with the All-Star Break just a month away. Bryce Harper is still out with a wrist injury, although he has resumed baseball activities. The 1980 Philadelphia Phillies delivered the most celebrated season in franchise history to that point, capturing their first-ever World Series title after nearly a century of trying. Managed by Dallas Green, the team combined veteran leadership, clutch hitting, and a deep pitching staff to finish 91–71 and win the National League East in a tightly contested race.Mike Schmidt led the charge with an MVP season, blasting 48 home runs and driving in 121 runs while playing elite defense at third base. He was the undisputed anchor of the lineup. Pete Rose, in his second year with the Phillies, brought postseason experience and grit, while Greg Luzinski, Bake McBride, and Garry Maddox rounded out a dangerous offense. The pitching staff was anchored by Steve Carlton, who went 24–9 and won his third Cy Young Award. Tug McGraw provided energy and reliability out of the bullpen, delivering several key performances in high-leverage situations down the stretch and into the postseason. The Phillies survived a dramatic NLCS against the Houston Astros, considered one of the greatest playoff series ever played. In the World Series, they defeated the Kansas City Royals in six games, with Schmidt and Carlton leading the way and McGraw striking out Willie Wilson to seal the title. The 1980 Phillies ended decades of frustration for the franchise and their fanbase, finally securing a championship for a team that had long carried the burden of being baseball's oldest and most title-starved club.- 3B - Mike Schmidt- LF-RF - Lonnie Smith- RF - Bake McBride- LF - Greg Luzinski- 2B - Manny Trillo- 1B - Pete Rose- CF - Garry Maddox- C - Bob Boone- SS - Larry Bowa- SP - Bob Walk- SP - Steve Carlton- SP-RP - Randy Lerch- SP - Dick Ruthven- RP - Tug McGraw- RP - Ron Reed

The Vet Alumni Podcast w/ Tek & Prem

Tek & Prem discuss the incoming 2025 Eagles, with two likely defensive starters added in the 1st two rounds of the NFL Draft, Campbell from 'Bama and Mukuba from Texas. Both players figure to be key contributors in the coming seasons, a true Super Bowl window for the Birds. Howie and the front office made timely trades to jump around the draft order, and added a solid DT from Nebraska, Ty Robinson. With the losses of Williams, Sweat, and Gardner-Johnson in free agency, these are all logical picks, and also picks made from value spots in the Draft. Vic Fangio's system is phenomenal with the right pieces in place, and this haul reinforced the roster nicely on the defensive side of the ball. The Phillies have stumbled after a nice start and are floating around .500, one game over. With the season still only in April, there is no need to panic. 2025 BBWAA HOF Ballot Happy New Year! It's once again time to talk about the Hall of Fame, this time the writers' ballot. There are plenty of worthy candidates returning to the ballot, and two standout first year candidates to watch. Japanese icon Ichiro Suzuki is a lock for induction this year. Although he didn't debut until he was 27, the spry savant amassed over 3,000 hits, 1,400 runs, 10 All-Stars and Gold Gloves, not to mention two batting titles, a Rookie of the Year, and a MVP. He also holds the single season hit record, with 262 in the 2004 season. Although not the first Japanese player in MLB, his smashing success paved the way for other Japanese stars such as Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Shohei Ohtani. The only question about Ichiro is whether or not he'll be unanimous. Don't sleep on ace lefty C.C. Sabathia's chances on his debut ballot. As one of just three left handed pitchers with 3,000 strikeouts (Steve Carlton and Randy Johnson the other two), Sabathia was the definition of a workhorse. Add in 250 wins, a Cy Young, a World Series, and an ALCS MVP, and you've got a Hall of Famer, especially in this era. Among the other first-year candidates, there are a few who could survive the 5% threshold to remain on ballot for another year. Félix Hernández was one of the most dominant starters in baseball from 2007 - 2015, but that might not be enough for the writers. Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were both excellent second basemen that frankly lack the longevity needed for enshrinement, but are certainly worthy cases to discuss, particularly on the same ballot as sabermetric darling Chase Utley. Russell Martin and Brian McCann come up short in the traditional counting stats that writers demand from catchers, but their advanced framing metrics put them in similar ranks as Joe Mauer, Buster Posey, and Yadier Molina. Of the returning candidates, Billy Wagner came up just short last year (73.8%), and he will need a push to get over in his final year on the ballot. In his second to last year, Andruw Jones appears to be stalling around 60% of the vote, not far off from induction, but not close enough to be confident he'll make it this year or the next. Carlos Beltrán and Chase Utley appear to be on track for induction in a few years time, though they'll need to continue their growth. AROD, ManRam, and Andy Pettitte would be in the Hall if not for PEDs, and they're not getting in anytime soon. How many will join Dick Allen and Dave Parker for a July celebration? Find out January 21st when the results are announced. After this awesome display of pitching, Feller was advised to seek voluntary retirement from high school in order to sign a pro-baseball contract. In his first major league start, against the St. Louis Browns, Feller fanned 15 hitters and never looked back. For twenty years, all with the Indians, the teenage phenomena dominated AL batters with his blazing fastball and bending curve. He hurled three no-hitters, including the only opening day gem, notched 12 one-hitters, served in World War II, and won 19 games for Cleveland's 1948 World Championship team. Feller was the second big league star to enter the service for World War II (following Hank Greenberg). He lost almost four seasons to military duty but was still at the top of his game when he returned. His first year back from the war he set a new record for strikeouts in a season (348 in 1946). Tek & Prem welcome Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer on the VetLine to talk Fightins. With 16 games to go, they stand atop the MLB with the league's best winning percentage. The next stretch of 10 games vs the Mets and Brewers may determine their trajectory in October. The top seed in the NL is a coveted position to be in with teams like the Dodgers and Diamondbacks in the fold. As they work to get healthy, some unlikely characters have stepped up and gotten it done in thrilling fashion. The Eagles got a victory in Brazil and it wasn't easy. The Packers provided a formiddable challenge and Jalen Hurts committed costly turnovers. Despite the rust and poor decisions, he also made some remarkable plays and got it done late by icing the final 8 minutes of the game. Saquon was exceptional in his debut. The redzone defense was superb and kept them in it early. The next test is the true home opener vs the familiar Kirk Cousins and his new-look Atlanta Falcons on MNF. Tek & Prem welcome Anthony DiRenzo, Digital Producer for Battleground News and formerly of 1210 WPHT, on the VetLine to talk Eagles and Phillies. The Birds suit up for their first meaningful 2024 game a week from today in Brazil, versus the Green Bay Packers. There are high expectations for a team with talent across the board and a revamped coaching staff. Jalen Hurts, coming off of a reportedly phenomenal Training Camp, will take the reins again as the Birds start their quest to get back to the Super Bowl. But what will the defense look like? We discuss. The Phillies complete an impressive comeback win last night against Atlanta and hold a commanding 6-game NL East Division lead as we head into September. Nick Castellanos again victimizes Atlanta with a key home run to put them away at the Bank. The question remains: can they win a World Series with this group? We will know soon enough. Tek & Prem welcome Scott Grayson of Fox 29 Philly on the VetLine to talk Phils & Sixers. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber have been struck by the injury bug, but they will be back sooner than later. The team has to pick up the production in their stead and it starts on the mound. The rotation is the best in baseball and Cristopher Sanchez put that on display with a complete game shutout on City Connect night. A lineup shuffle can present a variety of challenges for a baseball club, but the Phils have found ways to win this year regardless of the circumstances. As we approach the All-Star Break they have an 8-game division lead over the 2nd-place Braves. Meanwhile, the Sixers are a team on the decline with a general manager disconnected from reality. Daryl Morey seems to view the NBA through his own delusional lens. The NBA Draft was underwhelming, but we will see what Jared McCain brings to the table as an undersized NBA Guard. Will they make the needed splash at the trade deadline, and will the catcher shuffle hold up enough until JT returns? They have a 9-game lead over the Braves to work with. The Eagles are inching closer to Training Camp and there has been buzz around Jalen Hurts' presser last week. The defense will truly be the key for the 2024 Eagles and Vic Fangio is on the job. The Phils are set to start a 2-game set in London with the rival NY Mets & then travel back to the states for two tough road series vs Boston & Baltimore. The pitching has been historically good, with 4 of the Phils 5 starters ranking in the Top-6 in the league in ERA. The best team in the National League faces a hard stretch of games as they look to maintain their 7.5 game division lead over the Braves, who have performed well below expectations. The Birds have wrapped up minicamp and the team is in an intriguing position on both sides of the ball. New systems are being installed by Fangio and Moore. The secondary will have a completely new look and mode of attack, thanks to the infusion of talented versatile youth. Up front, however, there will be concern over stopping the run and personnel depth. Offensively, it will be Jalen Hurts' task to learn fast and execute consistently if this team is to return to its 2022 Super Bowl form. There is excitement, reined in by skepticism. The Flyers are well into their offseason as they look to build on an impressive 2023 campaign which exceeded expectations. The roster is under some scrutiny as they move towards the Draft. 1977 NLCS Meeting up for the first of two consecutive NLCS battles in 1977 and 1978, the Philadelphia Phillies (101-61) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (98-64) face off with games one and two at Dodger Stadium, and the final three (if necessary) at Veterans Stadium in Philly. The Phillies captured their second of three consecutive NL East titles behind the stewardship of Danny Ozark. The Fightin's had the best lineup in the NL, and they were stacked at nearly every position. Michael Jack Schmidt was his typical outstanding self (38 HR 101 RBI .274/.393/.574 151 OPS+), but it was Greg ‘the Bull' Luzinski (39 HR 130 RBI .309/.394/.594 156 OPS+) who finished runner-up in MVP voting. The mid-season trade for former Cardinals OF Bake McBride bolstered are already strong outfield core with Garry Maddox and the Bull. Larry Bowa and Bob Boone provided excellent defense and timely hits, while platoon hitters like Jay Johnstone, Tim McCarver, and Davey Johnson crushed their opportunities. ‘Lefty' Steve Carlton picked up his second career Cy Young by leading the NL in wins, but the rest of the rotation left a lot to be desired. These Phillies were able to win over a 100 games because Danny Ozark could turn to a dominant bullpen, with 4 guys (Gene Garber, Ron Reed, Tug McGraw, and Warren Brusstar) sporting ERAs in the 2s. With a high-powered offense, a true ace, and a lights-out bullpen, this is a modern team to be reckoned with. In his first full year as manager of the Dodgers, Tommy Lasorda led this storied franchise back to the playoffs. His lineup packs a punch to rival the Phillies, with four 30+ home run hitters (Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, Dusty Baker, and Reggie Smith). The corner infielders (Garvey and Cey) both drove in 110+ runs, while the corner outfielders (Baker and Smith) provided more in on-base and slugging, with Smith leading the NL in OPS+ and finishing fourth in MVP voting. Where the Dodgers had the greatest edge over the league was with their pitching staff, who collectively had a 3.22 ERA, 20% better than league average. All 5 of their starters pitched over 200 innings with above average ERAs and double digit wins. Tommy John led the way with 20 wins and a 2.78 ERA. The bullpen was not as reliable as Philadelphia's, but that is partially because they weren't relied on as frequently. The pitching matchups will be as follows: Game 1 @ LAD - LHP Tommy John (20 - 7 2.78 ERA 220 IP) vs. LHP Steve Carlton (23 - 10 2.64 ERA 283 IP) Game 2 @ LAD - RHP Don Sutton (14 - 8 3.18 ERA 240 IP) vs. Jim Lonborg (11 - 4 4.11 ERA 157 IP) Game 3 @ PHI - RHP Larry Christenson (19 - 6 4.06 ERA 219 IP) vs. Burt Hooton (12 - 7 2.62 ERA 223 IP) Game 4 @ PHI - LHP Steve Carlton vs. LHP Tommy John Audio clips from Youtube linked below Game 1 - Vin Scully on KTTV Game 2 - Russ Porter and Jerry Doggett on KTTV Game 3 - Harry Kalas, Richie Ashburn, and Andy Musser on WPHL-TV Game 4 - Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale on NBC (plus Kalas on WPHL-TV) As always, shout out to Baseball Reference and SABR for statistics, boxscores, background information, and much, much more.
