October 15, 1988- With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kirk Gibson hits a pinch-hithome run off Dennis Eckersley to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5 - 4 victoryover the Oakland Athletics in Game One of the World Series. Gibson, who injuredhimself making a game saving catch in the National League Championship Series, never came out for game one introductions and never took batting practicespending the entire game on the trainer's table receiving treatment withDodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda checking on him between innings. Inning afterinning, Lasorda checked and was given the thumbs down each time until thebottom of the ninth with the A's leading 4-3 when the clubhouse boy toldLasorda that Gibson wanted to speak to him. ”I think I can hit for you,Skipper” was the message Lasorda heard when he arrived in the trainer's room. Eckersleygot the first 2 batters out. Alfredo Griffin was next up when Lasorda sent MikeDavis to the plate instead, with Gibson warming up unbeknownst to anyone. AsEck settled in to pitch, Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on deck circle.Eckersley took notice and decided he wasn't going to let Davis hit it out ofthe ballpark. He worked the count to 3-2 and walked Davis. “Now get out thereBig Boy” Lasorda ordered Gibson, whose appearance sent the crowd into a frenzy.Lasorda decided Gibson had two swings to try and hit it out of the park andthen he gave Davis the green light to steal 2nd. With 1stbase open, the A's chose not to walk Gibson who worked the count to 3-2 andGibson launched the next pitch out of the park. What a regular season this team played! AL East champions. 101 wins. This was “supposed” to be a fall-back-to-earth kind of year after the impressive campaign they had in 2022. Instead, they flipped the whole storyline on its head. Now, they might just win the whole darn thing! There are still some things to sort out. The Wild Card round needs to play out. The O's will then to figure out their roster. And then the schedulers have to work around an inconveniently-time Billy Joel concert. All of this equally important, of course. We get into all of it on this week's podcast. We also look back on the emotions that came with the team finally clinching the AL East title, and reflect on the Tommy John surgery coming for Félix Bautista. And of course we discuss the life and career of Brooks Robinson, perhaps the most special sports icon in Baltimore history. If you like what you hear, consider subscribing here on Substack, or on Spotify and your preferred podcast platform. We are also over on YouTube, so consider a free subscription there as well.Connect:Email: thewarehousepod@gmail.comTwitter: https://twitter.com/TheWarehousePodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thewarehousepodFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheWarehousePodSubscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, Stitcher, TuneIn, YouTube or right here on Substack! We also do a bit of a post mortem on the 2023 Mets. Next, we talk about the deaths of two baseball legends—Tim Wakefield and Brooks Robinson—and how the discussion of the former is marred by Curt Schilling's despicable actions. We hit the sweet spot between the end of the regular season and the kick off of the postseason. Corbin makes history, Adley sells some jerseys, Miggy Ro buys the kids Jordans, Myles steals all the bases, and Pottymouth considers extending Juan. Jazz, Josh, and Kim take the Marlins back to the postseason and Cal has things to say about why the Mariners are not there. We say heartfelt goodbyes to Tim Wakefield, and Mr. Oriole, Brooks Robinson. Farewells to Tito, near and dear to both of us, and to Miggy who has a great future ahead working with young players in the Tiger organization. The Giants call it done with Gabe, but we have no doubt he'll get picked up quickly. Angel again demonstrates why the league needs better standards, or really any standards for umpire performance, but a kid gets a helmet. Turns out emotional support alligators are a real thing, but they still are not covered by ballpark policy in Philadelphia. It's not too soon to prepare for Winter Ball, or to try to sell peanuts to Japanese ballparks. Congrats to the Orioles, cementing their OPACY home for another 30 years. We say, “between the Queen of England and Ozzy Ozbourne,” “the preponderance of Rutschmans,' and “weird animals you could hold.” Fight the man, send your game balls to Meredith, get boosted, and find us on Twitter @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. It's with a heavy heart that I present my conversation with Brooks Robinson. When I heard of his passing, my mind went immediately to my very first baseball memory: the 1969 World Series and as a now bonafide 6 year old fan, I had a chance to start to appreciate great players. The 1970 World Series...THE BROOKS ROBINSON WORLD SERIES...was an incredible jump off point for a lifelong love of The Game outside of my NY Bubble. Learn more about your ad choices. The Mariners secured a much-needed win against the Houston Astros last night, bringing them to within 0.5 games of the AL wildcard spot. Jake and Jordan break down the match-up and discuss the funniest possible situation for the AL West postseason race. Then, the guys are joined by Jake's mom, a lifelong Orioles fan, to reminisce about 18x All-Star Brooks Robinson, who passed away earlier this week. Finally, the guys touch on the Cubs disaster in Atlanta, marvel at Elly De La Cruz's absolute moon shot, and debate over who would be the funniest Major Leaguer for Taylor Swift to date. Was the Seiya Suzuki drop the collapse play of the year?? What else has caused the Cubs to come back down to earth lately? Let's talk it out at the top. Props to the Brewers for clinching. Kratz, AJ and Braun wonder how far the Brew Crew run prevention identity can take them. Also the Phillies party hard for clinching the top wildcard. Stadium's Russ Dorsey swing by to let us know if the Phils are the sexy wildcard that everyone is banking on doing damage. We support the Marlins for getting screwed by the Mets grounds crew fiasco. Are we talking enough about the noise the Diamondbacks can make in the playoffs too? Of course there's an AL wildcard update. And some strong reactions on what happened to George Kirby last night. Should the commish do something about it? Most importantly, RIP to the legendary Brooks Robinson

HOUR 2: Are the Dolphins actually revolutionary? Sound Check, your best audio of the day. How should we remember the legend of Brooks Robinson?
The Mariners dusted themselves off from their Monday loss to even the series with the Astros. Both face a critical rubber game that could determine the fate of the AL Postseason. Meanwhile the Phillies and Brewers punched their postseason tickets. The Brewers won because the Cubs lost to Atlanta. Seiya Suzuki dropped a pop up that caused the tying and go ahead runs to score. Cubs fans can find comfort to know that in the post 2016 World Series world, crushing defeats like that no longer fuel Curse discussion. And Brooks Robinson, one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history, died. One time he talked your pal Sully's ear off in a manner that an outsider would have assumed he was my Uncle. Good morning, White Sox fans. Here's the rundown for my final Wake-Up Call of the season: LAST NIGHT: Early heroics from Eloy Jiménez were wiped out by 14 unanswered Arizona runs in the White Sox's 15-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, which justified Chris Getz's hesitation to say the White Sox had big plans for 2024. Also, Luis Robert Jr. is done for the year. TODAY: Luis Patiño leads a bullpen game against Brandon Pfaadt in a day game where fans had to pay retail prices. AROUND THE LEAGUE: The Cubs collapse in spectacular fashion, the Phillies and Brewers clinch, the AL Wild Card race remains jumbled, and the baseball world says goodbye to Brooks Robinson. EPISODE 300! - COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Judge Tanya Sue Chutkan is about to become the most important person in the 2024 presidential campaign and maybe the most important person in the fight to prevent the sabotaging of democracy. Because if Judge Chutkan sides WITH Trump and AGAINST Jack Smith in the Gag Order case, she will be enabling Trump to claim that everything he does – every threat he makes, every conspiracy theory he stokes, every lie about Biden he proclaims – has been authorized by a Federal Judge and YOU cannot stop him and the LAW cannot stop him and the CONSTITUTION cannot stop him and THAT fresh hell will make the current one read like a quick dance in the spring rain. To read the full 25-page Trump Gag Order filing is an exercise by Trump to get the Judge – and thus the Courts – to sign off on every one of his anti-democracy rages and every call for assassination by proxy and to exonerate him on January 6th and to enshrine him as the REAL victim in this case. The Trump lawyers response filed late Monday night BURSTS with Trumpian claims of rights that do not exist, and precedents that do not authorize his dangerous rhetoric, and constitutional means to DESTROY the constitution that are not part of the American system of representative government. But if Judge Chutkan finds for Trump, he will immediately claim they are ALL in effect and he will exploit them and 482 days from now we will be living in an authoritarian state. Trump's lawyers gave away the sub-plot in the first sentence. Literally. The answer to the Smith demand for a Gag Order begins: “President Trump respectfully submits this response in opposition to the prosecution's motion to impose unconstitutional prior restraints."
