October 15, 1988 - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kirk Gibson hits a pinch-hit home run off Dennis Eckersley to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5 - 4 victory over the Oakland Athletics in Game One of the World Series. Gibson, who injured himself making a game saving catch in the National League Championship Series, never came out for game one introductions and never took batting practice spending the entire game on the trainer's table receiving treatment with Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda checking on him between innings. Inning after inning, Lasorda checked and was given the thumbs down each time until the bottom of the ninth with the A's leading 4-3 when the clubhouse boy told Lasorda that Gibson wanted to speak to him. ”I think I can hit for you, Skipper” was the message Lasorda heard when he arrived in the trainer's room. Eckersley got the first 2 batters out. Alfredo Griffin was next up when Lasorda sent Mike Davis to the plate instead, with Gibson warming up unbeknownst to anyone. As Eck settled in to pitch, Lasorda sent Dave Anderson to the on deck circle.Eckersley took notice and decided he wasn't going to let Davis hit it out of the ballpark. He worked the count to 3-2 and walked Davis. “Now get out there Big Boy” Lasorda ordered Gibson, whose appearance sent the crowd into a frenzy. Lasorda decided Gibson had two swings to try and hit it out of the park and then he gave Davis the green light to steal 2nd. With 1st base open, the A's chose not to walk Gibson who worked the count to 3-2 andGibson launched the next pitch out of the park. Vin Scully's call of the play say's it all “"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened!"October 15, 1970 - For the third time, the Baltimore Orioles overcome a 3 - 0 deficit to bury the Cincinnati Reds, 9 - 3, and win the World Series in five games. Brooks Robinson won the World Series Most Valuable Player Award hitting .429 and breaking the record for total bases with seventeen. Robinsons stellar fielding earned him the nickname “Hoover”.

00:00-20:00: Remembering Brooks Robinson.
In a decade packed with legends that echo through history, there will be players who rarely grab the historical spotlight. Brooks Robinson might not be the household name of the former, but he's very much a legend. Starting his major league career in 1955, he played all of his 23 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. In that time, he made third base his own and is arguably one of the greatest third baseman the game has ever seen, with 18 call-ups to the All-Stars, 16 consecutive Gold Gloves, and 2 World Series rings. To this day, he still holds the record for putouts (2,697), assists (6,205), total chances, and double plays at third base (618). For today's game, we're going to early in 1964. Robinson had an offensive slump in the back half of 1963 and has been working with the Orioles hitting coach to find his form again. Listen out for his at bats as the Orioles welcome the Yankees to Memorial Stadium. It's the familiar team of Phil Rizzuto, Jerry Coleman, and Mel Allen… although 1964 is Allen's debut year, so enjoy his first steps into the radio world. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL196404180.shtml This game was played on April 18, 1964.
Pirate Hall of Famer Steve Blass takes us on a nostalgic and humorous journey through his illustrious baseball career in this episode. From his major league debut at the tender age of 22 to unforgettable encounters with legends like Henry Aaron and Willie Mays, Steve shares stories that will make you feel like you're right there on the field with him. Enjoy a Vintage 2003 Cameroon cigar as Steve hilariously defines what a podcast is and recounts the thrilling call-up from the Pittsburgh Pirates' general manager that changed his life forever. We even draw parallels to the excitement surrounding today's rookie phenoms like Jared Jones and Paul Skenes. We also take a detour to the Dominican Republic, where Steve's misadventure with a bidet provides a hearty laugh. Shifting back to baseball, Steve details his evolution from a curveball struggler to a slider master, sharing high-stakes World Series moments and the occasional rule-bending method he employed. The episode touches on the evolution of the game, discussing recent changes in baseball rules and equipment, such as larger bases, and how players adapt to these new regulations. It's a blend of humor and heartfelt reflections that offers a candid glimpse into the life of a professional baseball player. The camaraderie and unforgettable moments shared by broadcasters and players are celebrated with stories of iconic events like Pedro Alvarez's game-winning grand slam and Doug Drabeck's near no-hitter. Personal anecdotes about interactions with baseball greats like Pete Rose and Brooks Robinson add layers of richness and humor to the narrative. We also reminisce about the timeless personalities and colorful stories that make baseball a beloved sport. Join us in celebrating the passion and joy that baseball brings to both its announcers and fans, making this episode a treasure trove of baseball history and humor.THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!!!!www.holdmycutter.com
Send us a Text Message.Manager Jim Leyland, along with all-time greats Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, and Joe Mauer all were officially inducted into Cooperstown this past Sunday. All 4 made heartfelt and good speeches. It's always great to see the amount of HOFers that show up on a hot July afternoon to sit outside in a jacket and tie to show their respect for the newest inductees. Helton and Mauer played their entire careers for one team only - the Rockies and Twins respectively. Beltre came up at 19 with the Dodgers but saw great years in Seattle and Texas with a quick one year stop in Boston. Beltre resides in the same stratosphere with Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson as overall great 3rd basemen. Intro & Outro music this season courtesy of Mercury Maid! It's with a heavy heart that I present my conversation with Brooks Robinson. When I heard of his passing, my mind went immediately to my very first baseball memory: the 1969 World Series and as a now bonafide 6 year old fan, I had a chance to start to appreciate great players. The 1970 World Series...THE BROOKS ROBINSON WORLD SERIES...was an incredible jump off point for a lifelong love of The Game outside of my NY Bubble. Learn more about your ad choices. Good morning, White Sox fans. Here's the rundown for my final Wake-Up Call of the season: LAST NIGHT: Early heroics from Eloy Jiménez were wiped out by 14 unanswered Arizona runs in the White Sox's 15-4 loss to the Diamondbacks, which justified Chris Getz's hesitation to say the White Sox had big plans for 2024. Also, Luis Robert Jr. is done for the year. TODAY: Luis Patiño leads a bullpen game against Brandon Pfaadt in a day game where fans had to pay retail prices. AROUND THE LEAGUE: The Cubs collapse in spectacular fashion, the Phillies and Brewers clinch, the AL Wild Card race remains jumbled, and the baseball world says goodbye to Brooks Robinson.
