Welcome Back, in this episode i bring you ROKAR. This episode is a special one for me as ive known ROKAR for many years and remixed songs for him many years ago. He's a true gent and a big lover of music! From the underground of the UK's vibrant electronic music scene, Rokar has quickly arisen as a burgeoning sound selector to watch for 2024. Subtly arriving onto the scene via an almost constant slew of top tier artists dropping his demos, the mysterious producer has turned heads and ears across the industry as those in the k now scramble to pin the project to a pre - existing alias. With an aim to craft a sound that pays homage to the roots of garage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary house music, Rokar has garnered heavy hitting and organic cross genre support from t he likes of Marco Carola, Fisher, Chloe Caillet, Solardo , Syreeta, Dusky, DJ Snake, Skream, Nic Fanciulli, Claptone & Vintage Culture to name just a few. Add in multiple BBC Radio 1 plays before a record has even been signed and now with a massive release schedule forming in 2024, Rokar is a name to watch for as the year begins in earnest.

By the mid-70s, Jeff Beck was a bit of an enigma. He started out as a blues player in The Yardbirds replacing Eric Clapton and sharing the stage for few shows with Jimmy Page. Then he formed The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart as his lead singer and Ronnie Wood on the bass where the band tried to be more commercial. He created one of the great power trios with Beck, Bogert and Appice and while they were a strong live draw, they didn't get a lot of radio play. By 1975 Jeff, who was never one to stay still musically, decided to put together his first Jeff Beck album. Instead of blues and hard rock based riffs he melded with Max Middleton on piano who helped write the songs, Phil Chen on the bass, and Richard Bailey to create some jazzy jams that allowed everyone to shine. However, he also had help from heavyweights George Martin, who produced the album as he did The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, who wrote a couple of songs for Jeff including the sublime Cause We Ended As Lovers. It may have originally been a bittersweet song for his wife Syreeta but Jeff makes it his own by laying emotional guitar over over the mellow notes. And Jeff shows off his jazzy abilities on songs like Constipated Duck (great title), space funk on AIR blower, frenetic playing on Scatterbrain and one of his real signatures, Freeway Jam. Many of these became live staples of his for decades and the album not only went to #4 in the US but sold platinum despite the fact that there are no vocals on the album. With room to explore, Jeff led this group on a fun, experimental and tight journey to create a guitar masterpiece which is more jazz than rock. In The Past: Garage Rock Podcast

This week the boys talk about the girls - it's doo wop time and we start with the fabulous Chantels and their 1957 debut, "He's Gone" (1:32). Picture perfect in every way, from Arlene Smith's powerful voice and glittering, subtle songwriting to the beautiful backing from Lois, Sonia, Jackie, and Renee. A real Teenage Symphony to God! In 1964, podcast favourite The Royalettes adopted the song and here's where the strings come in (Teddy Randazzo's, that is ...)  (1:00:45). Sheila Ross skips and jumps with the song's heartbroken lyrics - they knew the song well because it's what they sung when they competed (and won!) in talent contests. By 1980, the song's sorrow transformed into joyful nostalgia with Syreeta's stylin' version (1:32:24)- it reminds us of Deniece Williams, so we like it a lot. Finally, in 2010, Brooklyn's Vivian Girls brought the song back to the Boroughs where it was born (1:57:54). Because it 's the final quaver in this quartet, we go off on some crucial digressions, but this one is spectrally pretty and includes some nice atmospheric guitar ... Jammin on the one!!

Today, we're doing things a little bit differently because I felt it was the right time to bring on Syreeta Challinger, a founder, a coach,  podcaster and an incredible human whom who I first interviewed five years ago when I had a company called F= which was all about empowering women and Syreeta had started MOSS – Moments of Sense and Style where she sold her beautiful products such as notebooks and candles, all heavily influenced by her story which she so graciously shares today.Syreeta grew up in South East London and as a child of mixed heritage, experienced regular racism from people on the streets to teachers in the classroom. A creative and sensitive soul like so many of us, Syreeta went on to forge a career in design and product development before meeting the love of her life in Hong Kong. However, this wonderful love story had a very difficult obstacle to overcome when her then-boyfriend Rob had a catastrophic brain haemorrhage and stroke in 2014 when he was just 37 and Syreeta was 32. It left him paralysed and unable to speak.Rob and Syreeta's story is one of hope and love and resilience and strength and I can't think of a better time than now to release it. Because I think we could all do with a little bit of hope right now. It's an emotional conversation so I hope you will forgive me for choking up. But I think it's a necessary one. Syreeta is a life coach now and when you hear her story, you will understand why this is the perfect role for her.Syreeta website /  Instagram/ PodcastDanielle Twitter / Instagram / NewsletterMentioned in this episode:Stephen LawrenceBNPSyreeta and Rob TED talk

“A lot of families started realizing things weren't working in the conventional system,” said Syreeta Farria, a homeschooling mother of two children in Detroit who, along with another homeschooling mother, Victoria Washington, runs a weekly homeschooling program for local families. Farria has seen the growth in homeschooling over the past three years, particularly among families of color. “There are a lot of stereotypes about what homeschoolers look like. And quite often, most people do not see moms like myself and Victoria. They do not see that there are Black and brown families in urban areas that are moving away from traditional learning and deciding to do homeschooling or non-traditional methods when it comes to educating their children.” *** Sign up for my free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at fee.org/liberated.

NO ONE HIT WONDERFULFILLINGNESS FIRST FINALE by Stevie Wonder (Tamla, 1974)Thank the Lord for Stevie Wonder! He's always been with me, energizing me with ecstatic revelations. His joyful music got me through adolescence and young manhood, providing spiritual sustenance and joy.  His massive cultural contribution cannot be done justice in a short essay - only obeisance. And, of course I'm hardly alone in that opinion. In 1975, at the 17th Grammy Awards, he was given his second consecutive Album of the Year prize for this record, which had topped the LP and Tapes charts, as well as the Soul.Fulfillingness First Finale is the fourth of five recordings regarded as products of his “classic” period, starting with Music of My Mind, and culminating with Songs in the Key of Life. I distinctly remember the first time I heard TMOMM, and the phrase: “my woman wants to be a super-woman, but is that really in her mind?” Perhaps he was paying tribute to the indomitable Syreeta Wright, his life (briefly) and work partner (for 2 decades), whom he married in 1970 at the age of 20, and divorced 18 months later. But this “marriage of true minds” coincided with Stevie's discovery of the synth - the instrument he turned into a household appliance.Another thing to celebrate about Stevie and Syreeta is how they fought for and gained autonomy from Motown, the institution that had steered Stevie's career since childhood, in 1971, with the album Where I'm Coming From. Musical restlessness and social consciousness drove them to tour with the Rolling Stones in ‘72, and embrace wider audiences across the musical spectrum. Listen to “Heaven is 10 Zillion Lightyears Away” with its folk rock chordings, and you feel the confluence of universal soul pouring out to embrace you.One thing that blew my mind was to learn that, following a near-fatal auto accident which put Stevie into a coma - he created this monumental work. It makes sense that it has been noted to be a more reflective, personal statement. This is what artists do: convert the raw experiences of life into catharsis.

As broadcast May 19, 2022 with plenty of extra heartache for your old school idealism.  Tonight we mark the combustible but amicably broken up marriage between Stevie Wonder and Rita "Syreeta" Wright in 1970 and the amazing music that emerged from the acrimony in the end, including their lifetime friendship.  After that, we play a lot of combustible funk & soul artists from back in the day while also wishing Sam Smith a very happy 30th birthday and marking new tunes from Drop MVP's like Monophonics, Surprise Chef, and Robohands amongst others.  For parts 3 and 4 Dan Lloyd brings the rock and we turn it up to 11 by noting Spinal Tap's ostensible rise from the grave for a sequel.  We also had new tunes from Viagra Boys, Cave In, Dune Rats, and our favorite new band Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers to round things out for the show.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Syreeta – I Love Every Little Thing About YouSisters Love – Give Me Your LoveAlice Clark – Don't You CareThe Diddys feat Paige Douglas – Intergalactic Love SongsMonophonics – Sage MotelMonophonics – Love You Better Part II (32:21)Robohands – La Em CimaSurprise Chef – Spring's ThemeSam Smith – Stay With MeLittle Beaver – Get Into The Party LifeMica Millar – Heaven KnowsCharly Brown – The Sub Club pt. 1 Part III (61:09)My Chemical Romance – The Foundations of DecayViagra Boys – TroglodyteDeath Cab For Cutie – Roman CandleSports Team – The GameCave In – ReckoningPart IV (91:12)Dune Rats – Melted Into TwoTeen Jesus and the Jean Teasers – Girl SportsSpinal Tap – Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You TonightWeird Nightmare – WreckedLake Malice – Magic SquareBayside – Strangest Faces
