For much of his adult life as an athlete and attorney, Len Elmore has balanced academics and athletics.  That work continues to this day as a Senior Lecturer at Columbia University in the Sports Management program.  The balancing act began long ago growing up in New York City, then attending Power Memorial Academy, the University of Maryland, playing in the NBA, going to Harvard Law School, serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn and beyond.   We are wowed by the big time nature of college sports and the gaudy salaries of the pros, where careers on average tend to be short.  The  lessons learned by balancing academics and athletics last a lifetime. I hope you enjoy the latest episode of “Before The Cheering Started with Budd Mishkin.” If you like the episode, please rate and review it on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts.  And please share it on social media and by old fashioned word of mouth.

On the latest episode of the Rex Chapman Show with Josh Hopkins, the guys are joined by ABA/NBA veteran Len Elmore, who is now a practicing attorney and professor for Columbia University. He discusses how his passion for both education and sports helped him flourish into the incredibly accomplished man he is both on and off the basketball court.  5:00 - How much of Len's upbringing during the Civil Rights Movement helped influence his pursuits later in life outside of basketball? 8:30 - It wasn't basketball, but baseball that Len wanted to pursue as a professional athlete. That was at least until his growth spurt changed everything. 9:30 - Len played basketball like Chief in One Flew Over The Cucko's Nest 13:00 - Len discusses his transition from growing up in New York, and attending college at Maryland. Basketball became the culture on that campus as they became one of the best teams in the country. 16:30 - As an accomplished broadcaster himself, of course the guys have to ask Len about calling the iconic Duke-Kentucky game that ended with Christian Laettner's game winner. 22:30 - Len recalls the impact that watching John Carlos and Tommie Smith in the 1968 Olympics had on him, combined with reading Malcom X's autobiography. He said it caused an awakening for him then, and he continues to hold those principles to this day. 37:30 - Len never felt like basketball was beneath him with all of his scholarly pursuits, but he just decided after 10 seasons he was just done. 42:30 - There were plenty of Len's former teammates who took to heart what advice he had for them, knowing everyone needed to find their life's work after basketball.  47:00 - Len and the rest of the Terps gave John Wooden, Bill Walton and UCLA their toughest test as they were in the greatest winning streak in college basketball history. 50:00 - The NCAA Tournament had to expand their field after Len and Maryland were left out after losing the ACC Tournament to NC State 52:00 - Even though they weren't close, the passing of Len Bias just absolutely rocked Len Elmore just like everyone at the time. Today went...a little off the rails. We started out by discussing the Marcus Peters/Jarvis Landry video. Is there anything more that needs to be said? Should anything happen? At some point in Hour 1, our friend Mark Mussina finally joined us. He has a really wonderful new book "A Mile In Her Shoes" out now. We talked about that-why did he want to write a novel about high school girls' track and field? We made an effort at a #DefinitivePowerRankings of "Actually Good Christmas Songs" but the list was too broad. And we had a very random surprise mystery guest check in-actor/comedian Pauly Shore. At the bottom of Hour 2, Terps legend Len Elmore joined us to discuss his work with the Knight Commission, who recommend FBS football programs break away from the NCAA. What would that mean? What do we need to know about the Alston Case in front of the Supreme Court? And is playing sports right now worth the risk? And we wrapped the show with our weekly visit with "The Edge" from Big Fat Winners trying to help us make some money betting football this weekend.

Hoop fans will be excited for this one. We get to hang out with Maryland and ACC legend Len Elmore today! The stories and experiences shared about the game in this episode are amazing, but as you listen you will learn quickly that he’s also done a lot outside of basketball. In fact, we’re still trying to figure out was he hasn’t done.Elmore grew up in the New York City area and starred at Power Memorial Academy. He led his team to being ranked number one in the nation and helped get them to the city championship in 1970. Elmore went on to play at Maryland where he earned all ACC honors three times and is still the schools all-time leading rebounder. He was selected to the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team where he was recognized as one of the 50 greatest players in ACC history. Elmore continued to have a 10 year long professional career in both the ABA and NBA, and the stories he shared about the journey are inspiring. After his playing days he earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School and began a career as a law prosecutor. You may also recognize him as an important voice of March Madness as he served as a color commentator and broadcaster calling some historic and memorable games. We loved our time with Len. We learned so much about the game and more. His resume is an impressive one and we are so grateful for his time. He was an absolute joy to hangout with and we know you will enjoy this one just as much as we did.Thank you Len Elmore!

This week on the Bill Bradley Collective, the hosts examine the complicated nature of the “tell-all” book, from the three narrative perspectives of insider, embedded journalist, and outside reporter. These tell-all documents represent a significant, in-demand segment of the sport and political publishing arenas, most recently brought to public focus in the wake of books detailing the Trump presidency from John Bolton, Michael Cohen and veteran journalist Bob Woodward, of which the latter's grim details regarding presidential (and perhaps journalistic) inaction sit at the forefront of our current news cycle. But first the rants, where Andrew applauds Len Elmore's takedown of increased “shut up and dribble” bullshit following the NFL's season opener, Zak goes in on GOP wonder-boy and doofus par excellence Ben Sasse after his inglorious turn on the WSJ editorial page, and Ed targets billionaire entrepreneur and right-wing donor/bootlicker emeritus Peter Thiel for his latest bit of dangerous grift with a nod to his already vastly sordid résumé.

Bradburd is a former collegiate basketball player and coach who both loves sports, sees some potential for good in it, but also doesn’t especially like where sports has come to sit in the order of priorities.  He was led to use sports as an avenue to teach other lessons in establishing his annual camp. This time on Peace Talks Radio, how sports can be used to point to peace. While sports headlines these days are as much about pro football players facing domestic violence,  child abuse, shooting crime charges and crippling game injuries, there are still examples of the potential for sports to bring together athletes from all ethnicities, nationalities and sexual preferences to bond and celebrate the fun, skill and mutual respect of sport.  We spotlight an annual sporting event that on the surface may seem sort of small – a two day summer basketball camp in the border city of El Paso, Texas.  But the hearts behind the camp seem sort of large and the perspective the camp offers is sort of large too.  Carol Boss talked with Rus Bradburd, one of the directors of "Basketball In The Barrio." Bradburd is a former collegiate basketball player and coach who both loves sports, sees some potential for good in it, but also doesn't especially like where sports has come to sit in the order of priorities.  He was led to use sports as an avenue to teach other lessons in establishing his annual camp. Also, we visit with Doug Harris, the executive director of the Athletes United for Peace, the camp's parent organization, about other initiatives that use sports to promote unity, diplomacy and peace.   Plus, a conversation with former collegiate basketball star and NBA player, Len Elmore, who also believes in the uniting power of sports, but wishes its pro athletes would speak up MORE often on social justice and peace issues. Carol Boss and Paul Ingles host.
