Robert E. (Bob) Hope is a veteran of the public relations and event marketing business. He is co-owner and president of Hope-Beckham, an independent agency based in Atlanta. Hope and longtime friend Paul Beckham started Hope-Beckham 25 years ago. Clients have included Chick-fil-A Foundation, Turner Broadcasting, Belk, The Coca-Cola Company, Southern Company, Home Depot, Comcast and a variety of sports teams and leagues as well as non-profit organizations. He is author of two books – “We Could Have Finished Last Without You” about his early days with the Braves, and “Greater Late than Never” about people who achieved their life's success after age 50. Will Rogers once said there are two kinds of people on earth – those who march in the parade and those who sit on the curb and watch. If you march, you have only one view your entire life. However, if you sit on the right curb, you see marvelous things. Bob Hope has spent his life on a marvelous curb observing remarkable people and events. He started working for the Atlanta Braves while in college and became the team's director of public relations and promotions at age 24. He managed the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at age 25. And he was with Hank Aaron during the chase to break the all-time home run record of Babe Ruth. When Ted Turner bought the team, he was promoted to vice president at age 29 and worked not only for the Braves but also the Turner-owned Atlanta Hawks and for Turner's TV station, handling marketing for the Braves and the TV station. He left Turner to work on sports, particularly the Olympics, for The Coca-Cola Company and then decided to go into the public relations agency business so he could work for both Coke and Turner, which led to a career in New York in a top job of the world's largest public relations firm. Along the way, he has been involved in many Olympics, including Atlanta. He helped several cities with their campaigns to land major league sports franchises – Charlotte in the NBA, Miami, Denver and Washington in Major League Baseball, Ottawa in hockey, and Atlanta in the WNBA. He also attempted to open the doors to girls and women as baseball players, creating the Colorado Silver Bullets professional baseball team of elite women athletes, which traveled the world for four years playing against men's amateur, college and minor league professional teams. The team was managed by former Braves star pitcher Phil Niekro. His involvement with the Silver Bullets led to a 14-year stint on the board of Billie Jean King's Women's Sports Foundation and six years as the only male on its executive committee. The WSF is the chief lobbying organization in favor of equal education opportunities, including sports, for women in colleges and universities.

12-26-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this show talking about the predicament New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen is. Players and Agents are taking his contract offers to other teams to match. John asks how much money would it have taken to get Yoshinobu Yamamato to come to the Mets? $350 million? 400 million? 434 million? And if he gave him that number, the press would have been critical. Ultimately, the pitcher went to the team he wanted to sign with, something he probably was conscious of all along. John then discusses the National Football League's Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the latter led by Baker Mayfield. John believes both teams will be dangerous in the NFC postseason and is keeping receipts. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John spends some time talking about Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns, and the former becoming the first African American to win the World Heavyweight Championship, and then a little bit about Babe Ruth, some NFL and AFL Champions, Chuck Noll, Carlton Fisk, Ozzie Smith, NHL Hall of Famer Defenseman Doug Harvey, Allie Reynolds, Reggie White, and Phil Niekro.

Collin McDonnell and Ava Kemper from Henhouse Brewing Co. are also in today. Listen to their conversation with Herlinda and Steve Jaxon on this separate podcast episode, right here. Lauren Schwing from Alliance Medical Center is also staying in the studio, to talk about their Giving Tuesday initiatives associated with Henhouse and Homerun Pizza, after telling us about that also in the previous segment of The Drive. Homerun Pizza has been around for 20 years and Cynthia Caughie has owned it for the last five years. She was a server there for 13 years and then had the opportunity to take ownership. That happened after the Tubbs fire. Her mantra is “Community supporting community.” Check out the Homerun Pizza website and socials to see Cynthia tell all about it. They make their pizza dough and their sauce from scratch daily. Their signature dish is the Knuckle Ball. It is like a small round calzone, pizza crust stuffed with mozzarella cheese and either peperoni or bacon. Steve Jaxon gives the authentic Napoletano pronunciation “muzzarell” for mozzarella.* You can tell he heard the dialect around his home as a child, as many Italian Americans once did. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Homerun Pizza had a party in March and will have another party before the end of the year, to celebrate their 20th year in the community. Baseball Names They have a menu full of items that are named after something or someone in baseball, such as the Ty Cobb Salad. On December 5, they will experiment with a bingo night. In honor Ava Kemper and her Hello Hello Hello beer, they will have a full keg of it there that night. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Cynthia tells about how Homerun Pizza is going to celebrate its 20th anniversary with Giving Tuesday, by doing it every third Tuesday of the month. It is a way for them to show their gratitude to the community that supported them through the pandemic. Lauren Schwing from Alliance Medical Center says it's a good day when she can hang out around Homerun Pizza. They will have other community partners with raffle prizes on the Homerun Pizza Giving Tuesdays. It's a great opportunity to get a great pizza and some presents all in the name of charity. Phil Niekro, Hoyt Wilhelm and Charlie Hough never thought of this! Homerun Pizza also offer frozen Knuckle Balls. If you purchase an order of frozen Knuckle Balls they will make a $5 donation to Alliance Medical Center. They make their pasta sauce from scratch. “It's like my nonny's,” says Cynthia. They have an extensive menu of wraps, salads, burgers and more. And if you like Ranch dressing, put some on a Knuckle Ball. Yum! * The name of mozzarella cheese comes from the Italian verb ‘mozzare' which means to cut a piece off of a larger piece of something. In this case, the cheesemakers have their hands in some very hot water, pulling and kneading a large ball of cheese. They will pull off a piece big enough to fit in the hand, knead it into a ball, and set it aside. The action of detaching the piece gives the name to the cheese. -C. DiMatteo, The Drive Italian translator and etymologist.

The Knuckleball… a pitch that is turbulent, unpredictable, and rarely mastered. One player who did was Phil Niekro. With 318 career victories he currently sits 16th on the All-time Winners list, the highest of any knuckleball pitcher. Of course the knuckelball is a fickle mistress. Niekro may have had three 20-win seasons, but he also had two 20-loss seasons as well; and to top it all off he is the sole MLB pitcher to pick up 20 wins and 20 losses in a single season, throwing 21-20 for the Atlanta Braves in 1979. With 24 seasons under his belt, there's a lot games to choose from. For today's classic, we're heading back to 1967, as the Braves visit the Houston Astros.Phil Niekro is on the mound, facing a pitching duel with the Astro's Don Wilson Behind the microphone are Gene Elston, Loel Passe, and Harry Kalas to take you through the game. August 19th, 1917 While Coaching at third base for Detroit in a 1-1 tie against The Senators, Ty Cobb shoves base runner George Burns as he pulled up at third on a long hit. Burns headed home scoring the winning run. Senators Manager and future Hall of Famer Clark Griffith protested and American League President Ban Johnson upheld the protest, as the rule bans coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed and Washington wins 2-0. On August 19th, 1921 Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits singling off Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers at the age of 34.The New York Giants Board of Directors votes 9-1 in favor of moving the team to San Francisco on August 19th, 1957. August 19th, 1982 - Scheduled to pitch against the Expos at home, Braves rookie Pascual Perez misses his scheduled start when he can't find his way to the ballpark. Perez circled the stadium on the interstate several times but was lost. He will be given a Braves jacket with the new number I-85 on it. Phil Niekro steps in and wins, 5-4, running his record to 11and 3. August 19th, 1987, Paul Molitor leads the Brewers, collecting four hits in a 13–4 drubbing of Cleveland. This was Felipe Alou's 521st career win as manager of the Montreal Expos, most in franchise history. Hermanson was clearly Alou's good luck charm as he was also the starting and winning pitcher in Alou's 400th, 450th, and 500th win. August 19th, 2000 Jeff Bagwell hits two home runs and drives home five runs in the Astros 10-8 victory over the Brewers. Bagwell is the first Astro to reach 300 homers in his career.

Players like Ernie Banks and Ron Santo contributed solid performances, but the team's overall lack of depth was apparent.Contrastingly, the Braves had a more successful year, finishing 7th in the NL with a 77-85 record. So, today's home run chain is the man who is now halfway to the total of 46 homers that he needs this season to tie Howard Johnson for fourth on the Mets' all-time list with 192.* Pete Alonso hit his first home run off Drew Steckenrider, 4/1/19* Drew Steckenrider gave up his first home run to Wilmer Flores, 8/19/17* Wilmer Flores hit his first home run off Heath Bell, 8/11/13* Heath Bell gave up his first home run to Damion Easley, 8/30/04* Damion Easley hit his first home run off Rick Aguilera, 9/20/92* Rick Aguilera gave up his first home run to Andre Dawson, 6/16/85* Andre Dawson hit his first home run off Buzz Capra, 5/18/77* Buzz Capra gave up his first home run to Nate Colbert, 4/25/72* Nate Colbert hit his first home run of Jack Billingham, 4/24/69That was the first home run Jack Billingham allowed in his career, having tossed 71.1 innings as a Dodgers rookie the year before being picked by the Expos in the expansion draft. Just before the Expos started their maiden season, Billingham got shipped to Houston to complete the Rusty Staub trade, as Donn Clendenon had refused to report to the Astros. After playing that tangential role to the story of the 1969 Mets, Billingham featured in 1973 as the losing pitcher of the decisive Game 5 in the NLCS at Shea Stadium. He's best known, of course, for continuing with Cincinnati and winning two rings as part of the Big Red Machine, including two scoreless innings in Game 7 of the 1975 World Series.Colbert's chain-starting homer was a tiebreaking three-run shot at the Astrodome in the sixth win (and 16th game) in San Diego Padres history. Tony Gonzalez doubled after Billingham had gotten the first two batters he faced out, then the Astros intentionally walked Ollie Brown to bring up Colbert, who had gone 0-for-7 as a Rule 5 pick with the 1966 Astros, 8-for-53 for Houston in 1968, and then went to San Diego in the expansion draft.Colbert had gotten off to a 5-for-21 start with the Padres when he faced Billingham in what was his 86th major league plate appearance. The next day, the Padres returned home and Colbert homered off Jim Maloney. Then the next day, too, another go-ahead three-run shot in the eighth, this time off Jim Merritt. Colbert didn't homer in a doubleheader on April 27, but did take Claude Osteen of the Dodgers deep on the 28th, then went back east and blasted one off Phil Niekro in Atlanta.Colbert wound up with 24 homers in his breakout season, then hit 38, 27, 38, 22, and 14 as a three-time All-Star, establishing the Padres' franchise record at 163 home runs before he was traded to the Tigers in November 1974 for Ed Brinkman, Dick Sharon, and Bob Strampe. The Padres' current franchise leader in home runs? Still Nate Colbert at 163. The single-season mark of 38 stood until Ken Caminiti hit 40 homers in 1996, followed by Greg Vaughn hitting 50 two years later. The Padres have since had 40-homer seasons by Phil Nevin (41 in 2001), Adrián González (40 in 2009), and Fernando Tatis Jr. (42 in 2021).González got up to 161 before he left San Diego, where Nevin is third on the team's dinger list at 156, followed by Dave Winfield (154), Tony Gwynn (135), Wil Myers (134), Ryan Klesko (133), Caminiti (121), and Manny Machado (116).Those are the only nine players to hit 100 home runs for the Padres. Tatis is at 96, so he'll get there soon, and either he or Machado should eclipse Colbert's total over the next couple of seasons. Then again, who would've thought that Colbert would still be San Diego's home run king today? This is a public episode. Pat Jordan grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut where, in the mid-1950s, he became a highly pursued pro baseball prospect as a young pitching phenom in local Little League and as a high school ace at Fairfield Prep.   On July 9, 1959, after being pursued by more than a dozen Major League Baseball organizations (MLB's first amateur draft didn't start until 1965), Jordan signed a then-record $36,000 "bonus baby" bounty to join the National League's Milwaukee Braves - where he reported to the McCook Braves of the Class D Nebraska State League, playing alongside future big leaguers Phil Niekro and Joe Torre.   Despite being one of the minors' hardest-throwing pitchers at the time, Jordan floundered through three seasons across obscure Braves posts such as Waycross (GA), Davenport (IA), Eau Claire (WI) and Palatka (FL), and by the end of 1961, was out of the game for good - a victim of injury, hubris and the realities of adulthood.   Baseball's loss was ultimately sports journalism's gain, as Jordan pivoted hard into a prolific, long-form, non-fiction writing career that began in earnest with the publishing of 1975's clear-eyed memoir "A False Spring" - which Time magazine called “one of the best and truest books about baseball, and about coming to maturity in America,” and Sports Illustrated has consistently listed as one of the best sports books of all time.   Like his brusque, straight-ahead writing style, Jordan holds back nothing in this wide-ranging conversation - featuring a multitude of stories featuring some of modern-day sports' most fascinating characters such as softballer Joan Joyce, Tom Seaver ("Tom Seaver and Me"), pro volleyballer/hoopster Mary Jo Peppler ("Broken Patterns"), Wilt Chamberlain, Renee Richards, and even the 56-year-old version of himself attempting a comeback with the the independent Northeast League's Waterbury Spirit in 1997 ("A Nice Tuesday: A Memoir").

Also included in this episode are new “Mask Mania” and “Fauci Focus” segments, as well as a discussion of three industries that the pandemic’s damage will have long-lasting effects on. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for September 18, 2021 is: vignette • vin-YET • noun A vignette is a short written description or a brief scene in a movie or play. // The play's program features a brief vignette about each member of the cast. // The documentary is a series of vignettes showing the lives of three families under quarantine during the pandemic. See the entry > Examples: "Additional pregame and in-game presentations will feature tributes and vignettes honoring [Phil] Niekro as one of baseball's greatest knuckleball pitchers." — The Albany (Georgia) Herald, 9 Aug. 2021 Did you know? Vignette comes from the Middle French noun vigne, meaning "vine." In English, the word was first used in the early 17th century for a design or illustration that ran along the blank border of a page, or one that marked the beginning or end of a chapter. Such designs got their name because they often looked like little vines. It wasn't until the late 19th century that vignette began being used for a brief literary sketch or narrative.
