Eight best-selling Mac products that don't exist–yet. Original text by David Pogue, Macworld April 1996. More on the history of DiskDoubler. John V. Holder's TakeABreak has recently been uncovered from the depths of archive.org. A hybrid of the imaginary Concatenator Pro and PocketBoot might be Startup Doubler, which gloms together all your extensions (internally, not on the filesystem) to accelerate startup. Apple sort of tried to make extensions management easier by including Ricardo Batista's Extensions Manager with System 7.5 and later. I've lost track of the number of Uninstaller-type software that's been produced for the Mac since this article was written, not that I would ever touch any of them. MacBreakZ is an awful lot like the imaginary Carpal Diem. From ~2010-2014, I always thought of NexTag as a real-world PriceDex. It's a shame it disappeared. CamelCamelCamel fills the void for those who haven't yet separated themselves from Amazon. Nobody ever went so far as to produce an INIT magazine but Symbionts will give you more technical insight into your System Folder. My all-time favourite feature: a file-by-file breakdown of how much memory is allocated by each INIT and cdev. Things I don't miss about the old days: holding my breath while capturing analog video, and waiting for machines with mechanical HDDs to boot. The PocketBoot would nearly useless today anyhow–not because of SSDs, but because Apple is actively striving to make it impossible to boot from external media. Thanks, Tim Cook! Super useful, good job. All because SECURITY. …except in the UK and everywhere else, shortly. Mmmkay, how about you let us boot from external devices again while you're at it? Better yet, throw out the current version of Mac OS, fork Snow Leopard, and start things over from there, kthxbai Scott Joplin “Maple Leaf Rag” clip courtesy of ConcertWare. PPG Wave 2.3 demo courtesy of RetroSound. More about CANYON.MID, composer George Stone, and how his work ended up shipping with most copies of Windows from 1991-1996. Composed on a Mac running Passport Designs' Master Tracks Pro. Live performance of CANYON.MID…? The canyon.mid Simulator and hard rock cover (pun not intended).
Ted's winning run in game 3. I contend if Ted didn't score that run in the 11th inning, the Mets would have won the World Series 4 games to 1. The Andrews affair and how that affected the A's in the 3 games in NY The Mets lock down pitching in NY Seaver 12ks and 2 earned runs Matlack NO earned runs Koosman NO earned runs How the A's felt when they were down 3 games to 2 heading home to Oakland The decision by Yogi Berra to start Seaver on 3 days rest in game 6 The decision by Berra to not give a start to the #4 starter George Stone. Gene Tenace told me last year that the A's were sitting in the dugout in games 6 and 7 saying why aren't they pitching Stone. We can't hit him. Stone had appeared in just a couple of innings in the series. The decision by Berra to bench Mays after game 2. In the book I have a chapter about game 2 titled, “The last heroics and hiccup of Willie Mays.” Mays made some great plays, including the hit that won the game in the 12th inning for the Mets, but also had some poor plays in the field and stumbled 3 times Mays also dropped to his knees and pleaded when the umpire ruled Bud Harrelson out in the 10th inning with what would've been the go ahead run. That photo of Willie on his knees is in my opinion one of the greatest photos in baseball history The decision by Berra to not have Willie Mays pinch hit for Wayne Garrett on what turned out to be the final out of the series. In a similar situation on July 17, Berra had brought Mays in to pinch hit for Garrett and Mays slammed the winning hit. Bud Harrelson's legacy – Bud passed away last year and he doesn't get enough credit. In 1973, Harrelson was injured in the middle of the year. In games he started the Mets were 59 – 43. In games he didn't start they were 23 – 36. I would love to hear Ted's insights after watching him in the field during the 1973 World Series.
Len Ferman's new book, The 1973 Mets - You've Got to Believe, is a day to day saga about a Mets team that that rallied from last place with a 61-71 record on August 31 to win the National League East with an 82-79 record. The Eastern Division race that year saw five teams still in the hunt for the title in the season's final week. In the end, the Mets won the title outright on the season's final day with just 5 games separating the champs from the fifth place Chicago Cubs. The Mets shocked the 99-win Cincinnati Reds in the five-game NL Championship series then stretched the Oakland A's, the defending World Series champs, to seven games before coming up short. The team featured the great Willie Mays in his final season and future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, the 1973 NL Cy Young Award winner. Len Ferman's The Sports Time TravelerTM website has links to his Substack, podcast, where to buy the book and other resources.thesportstimetraveler.comErrata: The Atlanta Braves finished the 1973 season against the Houston Astros for a two-game series in Atlanta. Henry Aaron hit home run No. 713 against Houston's Jerry Reuss in the series opener, but did not homer in the season's final game the next day against Houston's Dave Roberts and Don Wilson. Atlanta's manager in 1973 and for much of 1974 was Aaron's former Atlanta teammate and former Houston Astro, Eddie Matthews. The Pirates lost the final game of the 1973 season to the San Diego Padres 5-3You can support Hooks & Runs by purchasing books, including books featured in this episode, through our store at Bookshop.org. A Modest But Crucial Hero shows that human nature has not changed since George Stone's days with its slavery, epidemics, quarantines, international conflict, and religious dialogue and debate. He said, "Christianity will have no walk-on in Arabia, but what is the fun of playing an easy team?" Heroes come in many shapes and sizes because they choose to serve others knowing it is not always an easy walk-on. Join Rev. Whether we realize it or not, we are always telling stories. On a first date or job interview, at a sales presentation or therapy appointment, with family or friends, we are constantly narrating events and interpreting emotions and actions. In this compelling book, storyteller extraordinaire Matthew Dicks presents wonderfully straightforward and engaging tips and techniques for constructing, telling, and polishing stories that will hold the attention of your audience (no matter how big or small). He shows that anyone can learn to be an appealing storyteller, that everyone has something “storyworthy” to express, and, perhaps most important, that the act of creating and telling a tale is a powerful way of understanding and enhancing your own life.Dave's Affiliate Link - Support our show by clicking the link belowUS Audible LinkCanadian Audible LinkUK Audible LinkSupport the show!...
Late in Arizona Iced Tea Cans In A Microwave, I realized that we were recording on the ides of March, so I brought up the subject of favorite baseball Caesars… or Césars, as there's never been a Caesar in MLB… and while my mind went right to César Izturis – always love a guy who winds up on nine teams in 13 seasons – I feel guilty for having neglected to mention César Cedeño.This was a galling (Gauling?) omission, so let's dig into a rabbit hole with the four-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove outfielder, shall we?Use the code WCPIO for 10% off in our shop! And fuck Ron DeSantis!Although Cedeńo played for the Reds in the early 1980s, cementing him alongside Dave Concepción and Tony Pérez and others in my mind as a Cincinnati guy because of the prevalence of 1983-85 Topps in my foundational baseball years, it was Houston where Cedeño had his best years. What happens in my brain is that I, born and raised in the 1980s, meld together Cedeño (72-year-old Dominican who won Gold Gloves with a non-coastal NL West team in the 1970s) and César Gerónimo (75-year-old Dominincan who won Gold Gloves, four of them, with a non-coastal NL West team in the 1970s).Gerónimo played for the Reds from 1972-80, arriving in Cincinnati from the Astros as part of the Joe Morgan trade (Morgan, Gerónimo, Ed Armbrister, Jack Billingham, and Denis Menke for Tommy Helms, Lee May, and Jimmy Stewart. Two months before I was born, Gerónimo was traded to the Royals for Germán Barranca and, in his final season of 1983, entered three games against the Yankees in the late innings… but none of them was the Pine Tar Game.Cedeño debuted with the Astros in 1970, getting the start on June 20 in Atlanta and collecting his first career hit against George Stone, later of the 1973 Mets. Gerónimo did not get an at-bat in the game, but did replace Tommy Davis for defense in Houston's 9-6 victory. So, they even played two years together, with Cedeño remaining in Houston through the 1981 season. The Reds, having gone a full season without anyone named César, and posted the NL West's best record at 66-42 but missed the playoffs because they were second in each half of the strike-split season, traded Ray Knight to Houston to get Cedeño.A thing I didn't realize until now, in 2023, is that the 1981 Reds were managed by John McNamara, who of course managed the 1986 Red Sox in the World Series where Knight was the MVP. That 1981 Cincinnati team also included George Foster, who was released by the 1986 Mets, Bruce Berenyi, who didn't pitch for the 1986 Mets after July, and a two-time ex-Met named (checks notes) Tom Seaver, who was on the 1986 Red Sox but didn't pitch in the playoffs.Cedeño didn't play much for McNamara, though, because the Reds canned him in July. Like Gerónimo, when Cedeño left Cincinnati, he wound up in Missouri. In 1985, Cedeño was traded to the Cardinals for minor league outfielder Mark Jackson at the then-extant August trade deadline, and all he did there was hit .434/.463/.750 with six homers in 28 games to help St. Louis win the East over the Mets by three games. Fat lot of good it did in the playoffs, where Cedeño was a combined 4-for-27 between the NLCS and World Series, and the Cardinals lost to the Royals in the Fall Classic. In 1986, Cedeño wrapped up his career as a member of the Dodgers, with his last game coming on June 2 at Veterans Stadium. He went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, and a run scored in a 13-2 Los Angeles loss.Just to get it straight once and for all, here are the National League Gold Glove outfielders in the 1970s.1972: Cedeño, Roberto Clemente, Willie Davis1973: Bobby Bonds, Cedeño, Davis1974: Bonds, Cedeño, Gerónimo1975: Cedeño, Gerónimo, Garry Maddox1976: Cedeño, Gerónimo, Maddox1977: Gerónimo, Maddox, Dave ParkerThat's half the outfield Gold Gloves in the league, over a six-year span, to two Dominicans named César, both of whom started in Houston and then went on to Cincinnati and played almost entirely before I was born. I'm gonna forgive myself for mixing them up in my mind. It's hard enough out here dealing with all the contemporary Wills Smith: Will Smith and Will Smith, neither of whom is even the most famous Will Smith, nor even the most famous Will Smith in baseball – if you include the proposed name of Penn's baseball field in a quote that Quakers right fielder Kevin McCabe gave to Willets Pen musicologist Ryan Kelly back in 2000 in The Daily Pennsylvanian when the new Penn field opened under a radio station billboard featuring the Fresh Prince.I actually felt they should have named the field Will Smith Field at Q102 Stadium. We need to get a Penn baseball sign up there or something like that. I was joking around with the guys, saying, “If you ever lose focus, look at the smiling Will Smith and you can't be upset.”No word on if Chris Rock is to be awarded an honorary degree by Princeton in light of this information. With the series tied at a game apiece, we now move to Shea Stadium in Queens for the rest of the NLCS. Despite winning only 82 games to the Reds' 99, the Mets will have a chance to host three games in this short series. And with the series even, that could turn out to be a huge advantage for this scrappy team. Pete Rose has been the spark so far for the Cincinnati, homering off of Tom Seaver late in Game 1. Future Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench won that game with a walk-off homer. Rusty Staub and Cleon Jones played hero for New York in Game 2, and will look to bolster up an otherwise anemic offense. Games 3 and 4 will be matchups between left-handers: Jerry Koosman (14 - 15 2.84 ERA 263 IP) then George Stone (12 - 3 2.80 ERA 148 IP) for the Mets versus Ross Grimsley (13 - 10 3.23 ERA 242 IP) then Fred Norman (12 - 8 3.30 ERA 166 IP) for the Reds. If they split those games, then Game 5 will be a rematch for the right-handed aces: Tom Seaver (19 - 10 2.08 ERA 290 IP) and Jack Billingham (19 - 10 3.04 ERA 293 IP). Whoever wins this best two out of three will have a date in the World Series. The other will be looking at a long off-season. Audio clips from Classic Baseball on the Radio Youtube channel. We are back after a bit of a hiatus, covering the exciting 1973 postseason. First up is a National League matchup between the Cincinnati Reds (99 - 63) and the New York Mets (82 - 79). Although their respective records might not indicate it, both of these teams had to overcome 10+ game deficits to take their divisions, and neither of them had led their divisions heading into September. Talk about catching fire to end the season. The Big Red Machine captured its fourth consecutive NL West crown behind an MVP season from Pete Rose (.338/.401/.437 5 HR 64 RBI), as well as outstanding performances from Hall-of-Famers Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench, and Tony Perez. The Mets eked out in the East thanks in large part to otherworldly pitching from Cy Young winner Tom Seaver and young lefties Jon Matlack, Jerry Koosman, and George Stone. Right-fielder Rusty Staub was their best hitter (.279/.361/.421 15 HR 76 RBI), and one of only three Mets play above average offensively. The first two games would be played at Riverfront Stadium in Cincy, with the final three to be played at Shea Stadium. The pitching matchups were as follows Righties Tom Seaver (19 - 10 2.08 ERA 290 IP) vs. Jack Billingham (19 - 10 3.04 ERA 293 IP) Young Lefties Jon Matlack (14 - 16 3.20 ERA 242 IP) vs. Don Gullet (18 - 8 3.51 ERA 228 IP) The Mets had a slight edge in pitching, though the Reds were the more complete team. Who would take advantage early? Tune in to hear these great games. Audio Clips for Game 1 from Youtube. Game 2 from Classic Baseball on the Radio Youtube. Today we're talking about one of early PC computing's most iconic songs, "Trip Through the Grand Canyon" also known as "CANYON.MID" with none other than the composer himself, George Stone! We take a trip down memory lane and discuss how the song was written, how it ended up on millions of PCs around the world starting with Windows 3.0, and its status as a song that remains beloved to this day. George Stone is a multi-talented jazz musician who has been active for over 35 years; he's a performer, composer, arranger, and long-time professor at Cuesta College (Music, Recording Arts, Jazz performance/arrangement/composition). In addition to teaching and live performance, George recently did orchestration and arrangement for the 2022 film Amsterdam. After our interview, George was kind enough to send us a number of gifts that bring us joy: a signed PDF copy of CANYON.MID for Bryan and Gene to cherish (yes really), an unreleased MIDI from 1991 which we included in the show, the above charming side-by-side photo of George 30 years apart (1991 to 2021) as well as a screenshot showing some of the original musical cues he worked on way back when! We checked our facts and sorry George, we forgot to credit you specifically in our talk at the Library of Congress, continuing the unfortunate trend (whoops). Hopefully this episode serves as a decent apology and as always, we hope our listeners enjoy the story and the music as much as we do! Welcome to UnforMETable, an Amazin' Avenue Audio show that looks back on less heralded, more obscure Mets players from the team past. George Stone was a two-sport star in college, ultimately choosing baseball over basketball. A promising young left-handed pitcher, he made his MLB debut at the age of 21 with Atlanta, and was a key cog in the rotation of the 1969 Braves, who would fall to the Mets in the inaugural National League Championship Series that year. Stone would struggle with arm problems before getting traded to the Mets in the 1972 offseason with Felix Millan. Seen by many as a throw-in with the All-Star second baseman, Stone had an incredible 1973 for the Mets, going 12-3 and winning 4 games in their amazin' September run to the pennant. Slated to start Game 6 of the World Series with the Mets up 3 games to 2 on the mighty A's, Stone was bypassed for Tom Seaver and Jon Matlack on three days' rest each—a fateful “What If” in Mets' history. As always, you can listen or subscribe to this and all of our wonderful Amazin' Avenue Audio podcasts through Apple Podcasts, where we encourage you to leave a review if you enjoy the show. It really helps! And you can find us on the Stitcher app, or listen wherever you get podcasts. If you've got an idea for a player to be featured on UnforMETable, let us know in the comments. Make sure to follow Rob on Twitter (@WolffRR), and you can now follow the show, too (@unformetable). Tune in next week for another tale from the Mets' past. Learn more about your ad choices. Cam the Provocateur and Agent Scott from SpyHards podcast return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Cam's choice The Untouchables. The Untouchables is the 1987 Brian De Palma's Prohibition-era gangster film, loosely based on the activities of Al Capone and ‘The Untouchables' - an enforcement group led by Eliot Ness who helped bring down Capone. It stars Robert De Niro as Al Capone, Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness, Andy García as George Stone, Charles Martin Smith as Oscar Wallace and Sean Connery (in an Oscar-winning role) as Jim Malone. Pretty violent for its day - it opens with a child being blown up and there is the notorious baseball bat scene it also plays fast and loose with the real historical moments from the 1930s. But this is De Palma and The Untouchables makes up for historical inaccuracy with spectacular set pieces, for example, Battleship Potemkin homage of the Odessa Steps sequence. The Untouchables is also notable for Connery's “Irish” accent, voted by Empire Magazine as the worst accent on film, however, Connery steals every scene he is in and the accent is just about forgivable. [supsystic-tables id=240] First-time watcher Scott was dubious going in but gave it a full five (a six if he could!) for recommendability - same as Cam, Helen and Kobi giving it full marks for that category. The Untouchables scores highly across all Flixwatcher categories to score an impressive 4.20 overall. What do you guys think? Have you seen The Untouchables? What did you think? A music manager of the famous Louisville rapper EST G, or George Stone, has been arrested by the FBI, WAVE 3 News Troubleshooters have learned.Eric Mosley was taken into custody Thursday afternoon. He is charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person after the FBI said he was found with guns and drugs. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum penalty of life in prison.According to the FBI, their Safe Streets Task Force caught up with Mosley at a Louisville hotel and served a warrant. They said Mosley had a kilogram of cocaine, $100,000 cash, an AK-47-style pistol and a stolen handgun.During a WAVE 3 News Troubleshooters investigation, it was discovered that Mosley was also one of the people behind a $300,000 full-cash bond for the person accused of killing 3-year-old Trinity Randolph and her father, Brandon Waddles, in August 2020.Kevon Lawless, 24 is now facing the death penalty in relation to their deaths. Once the bond was paid, Lawless was released on home incarceration. He would later be brought back into jail for a separate parole violation.Lawless' release sparked outrage among the community and the families of the victims. Randolph's family discovered Lawless was out of jail through social media videos Lawless posted, bragging about being out. The Randolph family said the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections had incorrectly insisted Lawless was still in custody days after his release.WAVE 3 News obtained a copy of the checks that added up to the $300,000 for Lawless' bond. It was discovered $135,000 was paid for Mosley and Stone's business called Everybody Shine Together, LLC.According to the Kentucky Secretary of State, both Stone and Mosley are members of the LLC, which abbreviated is EST, part of Stone's stage name.Stone has worked with music big-hitters like Jay-Z and Yo Gotti. Gotti filmed a music video with Stone in Louisville shortly after signing him.Stone was named Hip-Hop Rookie of the Month in July by Billboard. He's appeared on national shows such as Jimmy Kimmel and performed on other nationally syndicated stages. In a song released by Stone on July 21, 2021 called Sky Dweller, he raps about bailing Lawless, or Lil' Kada, out of jail. Lawless was originally given a $1 million bond at his arraignment.“They want one mil' for Lil' Kada, know I'm comin' to get you, baby,” Stone raps. “Know my heart might get me killed, but it got me here, so risks, I'm takin'”Lawless has pleaded not guilty to the killings.Mosley made his first appearance in federal court on Friday afternoon. The FBI said Mosley's arrest was fruit from Project Safe Neighborhoods or PSN, which aims to focus on the most violent offenders. PSN is an effort by the Department of Justice to reduce violent crime. The Safe Streets Task Force, which investigated the case, includes FBI special agents and investigators from the Louisville Metro Police Department, Nelson County Sheriff's Office, Bullitt County Sheriff's Office, and Homeland Security investigations.Copyright 2021 WAVE 3 News. October 6, 1969 In what would be his last-ever postseason appearance, Hank Aaron put the Braves up 2–0 in the first inning with a two-run home run, his third of the series, off of Gary Gentry. Once again, the downfall of the Braves was their inability to stave off the hot Met hitters. Tommie Agee homered in the third, and Ken Boswell hit a two-run home run in the fourth to put the Mets on top 3–2 off of starter Pat Jarvis. Orlando Cepeda gave Braves fans a glimmer of hope by hitting a two-run home run off Nolan Ryan in the fifth after a two-out walk to put the Braves back on top, 4–3. But, in the bottom of the inning Ryan singled with one out and Wayne Garrett then homered to give the Mets a 5–4 lead, which they would not lose. Cleon Jones's double knocked Jarvis out of the game. Boswell added an RBI single off of George Stone, and next inning, Jerry Grote hit a leadoff double off of Stone and Agee singled him home off of Cecil Upshaw. Ryan pitched seven innings in relief of Gentry for the win as the Mets advanced to their first World Series.
